tl:dr; The food is awesome and filling. The service sucks.
The food. I tend to order my usual number 188 for dine in; (can't you tell I been here before), curry beef flank on rice. You can also order this with chow mein noodle even though it is not in menu. Very generous portion size plate (My mouth is watering as I'm typing this). My second favorite is the beef chow fun with bean spout (pickup), I like to order this during lunch and after a late afternoon on the road. The chow fun is not too salty or oily. Good meat to bean spout to noodle ratio. Both dished are very filling, leaving me hard to breathe and had to unbutton my pants in my vehicle.
The service. It sucks. The waiter and waitress are rude. They overcharge me for my no. 188 several times. Price in menu is 6.95 with final total is 7.40(gave or take a few cents) and the waiter/waitress charged me 8.50. But I gave them a 10 dollar bill and leave (they were probably thinking 'sweet tip for my excellent service skills' wrong). Because have you ever notice they take forever to gave back change and even though you put out your palm to receive the change they all and alway leave put the change on the counter. Don't even get me started when you try and order for pickup.
All in all, I keep going back for their filling homecook no. 188. Keep in mind never show any kind of frustration with the waiter/waitress because you know...go watch 'Waiting'
Thanks for reading, i didn't expect myself to write this much
I have heard the restaurant has new owners. Food more consistently good and servings are larger at a reasonable price. Very fast service.
My friends suggested coming to the Garden Bakery for a bite to eat after some clubbing, and I reluctantly agreed. I'm always a bit hesitant to go out to restaurants extremely late at night, cause you always hear about gang shootings and stuff at, well, restaurants extremely late at night! And I hate to play into stereotypes, but I think this is a valid concern! Anyway, there was nothing to worry about that night.
They serve a mix of Chinese and Vietnamese food here. I wasn't too hungry so I just ordered the spring rolls. They were alright, a bit too greasy though, even if spring rolls are usually greasy anyway. We were able to find a large table for the eight of us, which is always nice, and service was really quick. The lights were pretty bright there, and the decor is kind of tacky and lacking overall, but somehow it doesn't really seem to matter. I think people are just happy there's places like this where they can have a hot meal at late hours.
The Garden Bakery is a treat. The upstairs restaurant might look a bit like a cafeteria--the lights are very bright in there--but I don't think this place is trying to go for a romantic ambiance. They served me water is a pink plastic cup--it brought me back to my kindergarten days. Still, the cup was functional and cute, so there's nothing wrong with that.
The food was really good, and the servings were plentiful. I had the usually Szechuan-type food, like ginger beef, spring rolls, wonton soup--it was all very tasty, and the prices were definitely reasonable.
But the Garden Bakery experience isn't over once dinner is finished. After dinner, I headed downstairs, where there is an attached bakery. There are so many yummy treats like cakes, cookies, biscuits--they all make the perfect dessert.
Garden Bakery is a huge Asian bakery in Chinatown. The large main area features a variety of buns, cookies, cakes, and other treats, many of which are uniquely Asian items like buns stuffed with taro root, or cakes made with various kinds of beans. Customers take a pair of tongs and a tray and pick out what they want, then pay for everything at the front. There is also a restaurant upstairs serving a variety of Chinese foods.
I mostly come here for the bakery, however. I end up leaving with a decent selection of treats for well under ten dollars.
