Review from Simon K.
You don't get many options of organic food products in Richmond, in terms of spices, and cooking ingredients, so where do you go, here of course. I was sent out on a mission from my partner to get some chili powder, cayenne pepper powder, and I forgot the third ingredient for her very first attempt at making a home made chili. I still remember the first time I brought her here, the eyes just lit up, as from her mouth even said, "I can do a lot of damage here". You may not know it if you live in Richmond, as she does, and now it is a constant shopping place for her.
I too, on the search for quality goods, will come here, as you know what the saying goes at times, "you are what you eat". The isles are set up nicely, with the right hand wall filled with packets of powders, spices, you name it. You may think it daunting to look for yourself on something you maybe looking for, no worries, the day I was there, a lady was working on refilling some items, and I asked her to give me a hand, and she did that, and they knew exactly where things were, and as there is an assortment of any certain items, do ask them their take on which one they would use, as that was what I needed to do on this day.
I like where this store is located, off of that busy stretch, cause if it was on No. 3, it would be just nuts to get there. The store is big, as it is like a warehouse when you enter, the simplicity is nice, and the prices reflect that, so your not paying prices for an uber stylish store! The staff is helpful and friendly, and the product here is top notch, what else can I say.Listed in: My Grocery Shopping Lists.

This is totally a baker's toy store.
I was here looking for almond flour and anise seeds for my colleague (a baking fanatic) who specifically requested me to get these items from Galloway's. Before I picked up these two items I happened to be around the Kingsway area so I dropped by the Gourmet Warehouse to take a look at the prices. I found the prices to be ridiculously high so I ended up going to Galloway, which I was supposed to be anyway. 200g of almond flour, the Gourmet Warehouse was selling for around $8.00. Galloway's was $8.19 for 500g. Anise seed was $3.99 at GW versus Galloway which sells for $1.99.
I've been to Galloway's once with my partner and I really like how the store is set up as a warehouse. Things are easy to find and organized. The atmosphere reminds me of a spacious library. They carry anything from different bread flour, cake flour, pastas, grains, condiments (olive oil, vinegars, spreads, preserves etc), European snacks (biscuits, candies, fruit juices), and they even have a section for health/skin care.
How about picking up some impulse items at the check out counters? Saffron and gold flakes, anyone?Listed in: Grocery…

* Cock flavoured soup mix?!?!?!?! WTF?!?!?!?! *
This feels very much like a warehouse. Probably because it is!
This is a great place to find the missing ingredient for your snazzy dazzy fancy fussy recipe. Or your random imported product that you just "need" to have.
They have a very large selection of spices, herbs, flours, dried "things" and pre-packaged "things". I use the term "things" because it encompasses all of the variety they have.
Need some sevruga czaviar (vegetarian low-fat fake caviar - WTF??!?!) from Canada? Check.
Need some canned truffles from France? Check.
Need some Armenian Ak Mak Cracker Bread? Check.
Need some oil of rosemary from Tunisia? Check.
Need some cock flavoured soup mix from Jamaica? Check.
Prices are not the best, but if you have a hard to find ingredient this is a good place to check out.
I still lean towards Famous Foods (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) a bit more because of price and the inclusion of fresh produce, although Galloways definitely has a lot going for it in the dried/pre-packaged end of things!
And if you happen to need cock flavoured soup mix you know where you can find it!Listed in: Best Vancouver food sources

When I was a little girl, I would spend hours at the mall, looking at all of the pretty dresses and shoes -- fantasizing about all of places I could go, all dressed up.
Now, all grown up, when I go to Galloway's, I can spend the better part of an afternoon, just browsing through bags of grains, getting giddy over dried fruits, nuts and oh, those yogurt covered almonds... they're addictive.
My heart flutters and my mind races over the endless recipe possibilities. Quinoa everything, wild rices, oils, vinegars, sauce mixes... the list is really endless.
And the best part, the price tag. Ca-ching, that's cheap!
For the love of hunting down obscure ingredients (like borscht paste) Galloway's can't be beat. But my search for canned passion fruit still eludes me. One day passion fruit Pavlova, one day... -

The moment I walked into Galloway's I said to myself,
"Wow, my Dad would love this place".
Not because it is dorky or old... more that it is a true one of a kind.
So many random products reminded me of epic camping trips growing up in the Yukon.
Where else can you get Buttermilk powder, chunky cane sugar, Callebaut Chocolate by the kilo, and at least 10 different kinds of rice?
Definitely a glimpse back to the past. Do yourself a favour and check it out.Listed in: Organic is the way to go

Review from Larry L.
My father used to take me to places like this before "Green" was in.
Back in the hippy days it seems we did our sprouts from seeds and bought stuff in bulk. Lots of beans and seed and exotic goodness. It can stil be found here today at Galloway's.
I like to buy my sprout seeds from here for my sandwiches and in the process, get beans, pasta's all kinds of rice and wholesome grains.Listed in: Diabetic Friendly

I'd definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for dried fruits/bulk items and spices. Your odds are good if you're looking for some random ingredient in a recipe that doesn't seem to be at a regular grocery store! We were having a heck of a time finding some ingredients this past month and decided to stop in here... Galloway's had everything we needed!
Prices are reasonable for spices/pastas/bulk items but I'd skip the packaged products like olive oil, etc... which can be found for less elsewhere. I was in a bit of sticker shock when I looked at the prices for some of their snacks - I don't know, I can't imagine feeding kids granola bars that are $1 each! I'm all for healthy eating, but some of the aisles here were a bit too rich for my blood.
Overall a great store. Customer service was just average when we were there. -

WOAH. This place is huge!
One would never guess based on the exterior. It's in a strip mall, for heaven's sake. My jaw dropped when I walked in! It looks like a warehouse. Very high ceilings, super-wide aisles, huge stacks of big bags of bulk everything. And I mean everything.
Tons of Callebaut chocolate, cocoa powder, sugars, flours, other baking ingredients like almond paste and icings, beans, lentils, rice, pasta, dried fruit and nuts, candied fruit of all sorts, cake decorating supplies like candied violets and rose petals and sparkling sugar and colouring paste, flower waters, spices, herbs, dried flowers and plants, jams and preserves, sauces, condiments, canned and tinned foods, cookies and crackers and candy! Soup mixes, curry mixes, hot cocoa mixes, sauce mixes!
I picked up a truly gigantic bag of unsweetened Callebaut chocolate, several bags of Bensdorp dutch-process cocoa, and some little Italian cream wafers.
This is a good place to go if you're looking for dried goods and difficult to find ethnic ingredients. They have a fantastic selection of canned Mexican ingredients, and they also have all sorts of lovely Indian foods - masalas, pastes, chutneys, and also frozen breads and paneer. In their refrigerators they carry cheeses, ghee, lots and lots of halvah, fresh eggs, anchovies, etc. My search for chestnut flour ended here, finally! Yipee! And I was excited to see some very unique fruit preserves, juices, and pastes - guava paste was new to me!
At they front of the store they carry a very wide range of natural health products. That really isn't my thing but if it's yours I suggest you have a look.
I love the super-wide aisles. You don't have to slither past someone, hoping you won't knock over a display of mugs. You just comfortably browse the aisles, gleefully dumping massive bags of coconut and enormous blocks of white chocolate into your cart.
And if all of this wasn't enough, they also carry a pretty good supply of SOAP making ingredients! Shea butter, all kinds of oils, dried roses, etc., and they offer soap-making classes.
This place is great for buying bulk, but it's just as wonderful for buying little exotic treasures and weird, esoteric ingredients and gifts, too.
I live downtown, so for now Galloway's will be a special little treat for me when I find myself in Richmond. I suggest you go and check it out!
