Contrary to Luisa's review below, Atsui is open to the public during specific shows. I went to the open 10x10 show this afternoon and left after adding a red dot to a Jennifer Mawby piece :) My lil' sis is gonna love that one.
This place is tiny, the gallery area probably only 200 square feet or so. I met Todd Nickel, on of the curators, who was very nice and walked me through each of the artists being showcased.
BTW - the 10x10 is a great show! Local artists have produced pieces on 10" by 10" panels, each of which is only $100. Quite a steal if you ask me, and a great way to support local original art.
Randomly tucked away on East Hastings at Princess, Atsui is a bit hard to see: it's one door East of the corner on Hastings & Princess, South side of the street, with a few steps leading up to an unassuming door.

Run by Sasha Yamashita, Alex Grewal and Todd Nickel, these three artists just opened their doors. Frustrated with how closed the art world can be, they turned an old restaurant-makeshift-casino-and-maybe-brothel into a platform to showcase the art they want. They currently do not accept artist submission; rather, they ask for curatorial proposals. With a progressively conceptual vision and a dedication to emerging artists, this gallery promises to stay unique amongst others of its kind with their cookie-cutter perspectives.
