Richmond Dim Sum is usually pretty good. I haven't had very many negative experiences with the food. So, I will focus on the unique positive points of this place.

This is a very expansive feeling restaurant with all the decorations and frills you might imagine. The staff is very friendly and can seat you immediately almost every time. They take your order sheet and your food is normally out in less than 10 minutes. This is why I like it here. There isn't a wait, the service is quick, and everyone is friendly. The menu has all the traditional items. This is why we will continue to come back.

Dim Sum is easily the Asian brunch activity of choice in Richmond, a culinary staple of which no other city in North America can come remotely close; it's simply the best in the land. Gala is somewhere on the lower end of the Dim Sum totem pole, with more misses than hits throughout it's vast scale of offerings.

As it is becoming more commonplace in the city, this is no old school Dim Sum cart joint, but of the a la carte variety. This is definitely more of a local charm here, nothing fancy in terms of decor, no gringo scene in sight, and an abundance of Chinese senior citizens who are most likely locals to the joint and/or spotted the half priced Dim Sum ad in the Chinese newspaper.

Gala is no small banquet hall by any means, as there were plenty of group friendly dining tables available. But by available, I really mean empty, which unfortunately magnifies the lack of patronage and overall ambiance. Service was spotty, many orders were forgotten or simply needed to be reminded, waters and teas weren't filled often enough, and judging from nearby tables, it seemed we weren't the only ones in this predicament.

The food is the real judge and most of the items at Gala were more mediocre than not. My favorite egg tarts (dan tat) were a dry mess, steamed beef and fish balls (ngau yuk yuen, lang yu kau) were a tad salty (without having added the Worcestershire sauce!), fried turnip cakes (lo bak go) were just bland, beef / shrimp crepes (ngau yuk / ha cheurng) looked super unappetizing and turnip pastries (lau lien so) were severely lacking in flavor.

There were some solid additions, the shrimp dumplings (har gau) held together well, glutinous pork rice wrap (lo mai gai) was tasty, fried taro dumplings (wu gok) were crispy with a nice bite, surprisingly the yellow custard bun (lau sa bao) did not disappoint.

With the morning deal ($1.00-$1.50 dishes) in place, I think Gala could bear a repeat visit. The bright side is there is never a wait and there is plenty of seating for all parties. Given the lack of gusto in the food, it may also be a good spot for the budget conscious (and possibly hungover) Dim Sum seeker.

After a failed attempt at Istanbul Topkapi Food (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) had to divert and try something else in Richmond.  Had heard good things about Gala and decided to venture in for the dim sum.

I'm mourning the temporary closure of Shun Feng (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) as this place just didn't even come close.

    Tried the following:

    - The deep fried chicken "nickles" (sic) were overly greasy and too heavily breaded.  They did have a pleasant and interesting 5 spice marinade inside.  But overall the dish lost something in the translation from knuckle to nickle.

    - Hargow - wrapper was mushy and over steamed.  The shrimp were juicy and crunchy.  Overall the wrapper really killed some good filling.

    - Shrimp cheong fun had an incredibly mushy wrapper that dissolved upon trying to pick it up.  Way over steamed.  The shrimp were once again fresh, although on the smaller side.

    - Scallop dumpling had a better wrapper, and was probably the best dish.  It was basically an open wrapped hargow with half a scallop on top.  The scallop was bordering on being overcooked.  But it was flavourful overall.

    - The veggies with oyster sauce were cooked nicely, but the oyster sauce was somehow not quite right.  It was much saltier than it would normally be, and didn't have that rich flavour it should.  I'm sensing really cheapo bottled sauce that maybe doesn't have all the proper ingredients!

    - The chicken steamed bun had a really pleasant filling that had a hint of ginger, along with a few shrimp added in for flavour.  The bun itself was a bit mushy though, as if it had been in the steamer too long.  (Are you sensing a theme here?)

    - Baked tapioca was not one of the better versions I've had.

    - Sponge cake was a generous portion, but there was a bit too much artificial vanilla flavour.  Do they make this from a Betty Crocker mix ya think?  For that type of cake, it was decent.

Service was piss poor though - the majority of servers did not seem to like their job at all.  The food was also really REALLY slow to come out of the kitchen (about 5-10 minutes per dish even though they were all pre-ordered!) - which may explain all of the over-steaming?

Please, oh please, would Shun Feng just re-open?  Please!

Reunion with my great uncle.... haven't seen him in about 10 years. I remember back in the day when I helped them with their paper route.
They picked this dim sum place because they go there approx 3 times a week.

The food was decent. Some dishes seemed larger than others in comparison to the same dish at other dim sum joints. I don't know if that's how they make it or if it's a consistency issue. watch out for the people carrying the food on the trays. they could be the same dish on the order sheet... but because they are bringing it out, they charge a mark up.

We orered some vermicelli noodle dish.... it was really good. The place was super busy and good thing they accept reservations or you might as well go somewhere else on a Saturday lunch rush.

This is place in Richmond fast affordable Dim Sum and no line ups - count me in!

It's kinda 80's dated now, but a big place to accommodate many friends and family. No push carts here - order off the menu. There are a few servers carrying things like egg tarts and deep fried spring rolls around from time to time.

    Our picks:

I liked the shredded chicken the best. The crisp won ton skins with jelly fish - mmmm!
The fried spicy tofu, and the pan fried radish cake with bean sprouts and egg are all ways good choices.
My wife luvs the steamed spareribs in black bean sauce with the squash garnish.
Forget the egg tarts and try the baked tapioca dessert -- mmmm good!

Just writing this review I decided we will go this weekend -- see you there!
