I'm gonna try it, no matter what the reviews say... I'll get back to ya  !
OK, now I'm ready to dish the dirt...
Actually, the food, as such, was really nice. I had a specialty omelette, that I changed up a little, to meld with my favorite omelette. I had the "Bacon & Cheese" omelette, with green onions and mushrooms added. When the omelette came, I was a little disappointed, because I didn't know, or pay attention to the menu, and recongnize or notice, that the cheese in this omelette wasn't cheddar. It was something like velveeta. All in all the omelette was really tasty, and the quality was some of the highest I've had. But, a proper omelette needs cheddar cheese... PERIOD. So I'll take credit for making a mistake when I ordered. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that like the velveeta type cheese in their omelettes (probably most of them are Texans).
Instead of the norm (home fries, which I really don't like) I tried the "Spanish Rice". It turned out to be a little bland, but it was cooked well, and the salsa that they provided was pretty tasty, and had a nice amount of zing.
The real topper to the breakfast was the biscuit that I selected, instead of toast. I LOVE biscuits, and was eager to see how theirs was. I didn't remember that they had shown the biscuits on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, so I was blown away when my breakfast arrived. The biscuit was the size of a large grapefruit, and was absolutely PERFECT !!! The best biscuit that I've ever had. I was only able to eat about 2/3 of it, and the only down side was that there wasn't enough butter to deal with it's monsterous size, but it was delicious even without butter (I'm not a "sweets" person, so I rarely ruin my toast or biscuits with preserves or jam).
I'm guessing the person who waited on me was the owner, and he was just wonderful (sorry for all the fluffy language, I am a real man, except sometimes I use fluffy language, and am quite secure doing so).
The restaurant was one of the nicest I've been to. It was sparkling clean, it was well decorated with vintage photos from San Pedro's past and it was very large and open. I appreciate having the extra elbow room, and not having someone's knees in my back or vise-versa.
The bottom line is that the restaurant is high quality, the staff/owner is great and the food is first rate. But, I need to make my menu selections more carefully, to ensure I'm not just satisfied, but palet pleased as well.

You won't get the warm and fuzzies from the owner/hostess (at least she was performing hostess duties when I was there.  Maybe someone was sick?)  But with good solid food being served, sometimes you gotta give a sister a pass.

I ordered the Menudo.  I can't find good menudo in Long Beach so I lucked out here.  Their menudo is REALLY good.  Almost better then my Aunt Tilly's.  Dang, if she heard me say that, she beat me.

Nevertheless, I found a new menudo place and best of all, it's within a decent distance where I can take the motorcycle.

(Our server was wonderful and attentive and very nice.)

When I first walked up to this restaurant they wanted you to know they were featured in the show "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" which was on the food network. I didn't watch that show if at all so I didn't know what sort of hype was behind that. My friend that lives really close to here suggested this place. I really wanted dim sum instead but hey it was in walking distance so I can't really complain about parking, LoL. The interior is something else because it's so simple.. nothing fancy about this place at all.. It would take a lot to make it fancy but let's hope they put all the fanciness in their food.

I got a Ortega Burger + a side of fries which tasted okay but nothing off the wall. Friend got the Big One.. that person didn't have any issues gobbling down that sucker but this is my review.

If I come back here again I'll try something different but I'll probably just end up eating Dim Sum next time !!

Note: The utensils were dirty and the restroom has another story in itself.

It's been awhile since I've came here and my last review, and let me tell you. This place NEVER fails!! This time, I took it simple, just some pancakes, bacon n eggs. Husband got the breakfast burrito and a side of fries. "OMG" does NOT explain at how huge those pancakes were. I ate half of one and was full. They were soooo good. And their burrito, OMG as well. HUGE - breakfast here defeated us. Can't wait to come back again!!!

Fiance and I stopped in here for breakfast on the way out of town. After a long wknd in Long Beach checking out the area and going to Grand Prix, we tried stopping into Busy Bee by recommendation to grab a sandwich but they were closed so after a lil bit of googling, I suggested we try to find this diner. It was cool upon entering to find out that Guy Fieri had visited this place. Good Sign. I ordered the French Kiss with Sausage. Fiance ordered waffles with sausage and bacon. We both had Fresh Squeezed OJ. Plenty of food, good service for only having a few on staff tackling the Sunday morning customers. Yummy Food and plenty of it!

We came here on a sunday morning, there were 5 of us so i expected a long wait. We were seated within 20 minutes - NOT bad at all! :) The menu has a lot to offer. We decided to give this place a try since it was on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Guy never steers us wrong.... the food was great and they have very LARGE portions. The homemade salsa is really great too. Needless to say, we enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Totally like a small town diner where everyone knows everyone. Its not super close to our house, so not sure when we will be back again.

My family and I stopped in for lunch before visiting the Fort MacArthur Museum. Very unassuming little place, but very nice and clean. Our server was very friendly and quite attentive to our needs, we started with the biscuits and gravy and a side of sauteed mushrooms. The biscuits and gravy were just great so fresh and hot, we all loved it! My kids both ordered Cheeseburgers with sauteed mushrooms and onions, and we ordered the Chicken fried steak with mash and green beans. When the orders came up the cheeseburgers were HUGE and so was our chicken fried steak. Needless to say we were all too full for any kind of desert. Everything was so delicious everyone agreed. We can't wait to make it back to this great little diner and try more of their delicious food!

My boyfriend and I have added a new line to our bucket list: eating at all "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" restaurants. We saw Gaffey Street Diner on it and thought it would be great to try a local diner that Guy Fieri raved about. Also, the food featured on the show made us drool.

When we got there, the parking was horrible. The lot was really small and it was not paved well (sort of a dirt and gravel concoction). The staff seemed pretty nice at first and told us to sit anywhere we'd like. Then, we ordered. We both had fresh squeezed orange juice which was delicious. My boyfriend chose the John Wayne special while I ordered the eggs benedict. It took a while for the meals to get to our tables and when they did, we were disappointed. Now the portions were exceptional, but they came sloppily prepared and were not that tasty. I definitely could have made better food at home. When it was time to pay, the waitress was very rude and made me want to leave that much sooner.

If you want a large amount of ok tasting food for dirt cheap in San Pedro, go here. Otherwise, Pacific Diner, and the Omelette and Waffle Shop are better choices for breakfast.

Love this place for breakfast. Service is always consistently good & friendly. I am hooked on their delicious omelettes along with their homemade salsa. We will skip weekends to avoid waiting. Great local place & the type of diner you simply won't find in OC. Happy to be in the South Bay to enjoy all the great diners we have, especially Gaffey Street.

Heard about this place on DDD and I was up from Fullerton dropping my niece and nephew off for their cruise, brought my friend with my so we could stop in for lunch.  Great little diner. Very low key. I had Pumpkin pancakes with 2 egg and got 4 bacon stripp's instead of 2 and my friend got the John Wayne plate which she said was just   amazing.

Great staff and very kid friendly.

I cant believe how "down hill" this place has become. Being a San Pedro local I have gone the extra mile to overlook some indiscretions I have experienced here in the past but I have to, at this point, refrain.

I just had breakfast there with my brother, sister and nephew. My brother and nephew were plated first. "John Waynes" for both (a GSD staple). My sisters plate did not come............... for another five minutes. Then mine followed.................. about five minutes after that.

My sister had the biscuits and gravy. There was a long hair in her food. I had polish sausage and eggs and asked repeatedly for my eggs to be "over medium". I seriously could not have emphasized this enough. looking the waiter straight in the eye and saying "over medium" twice.  (If you don't know what this means then you have no business cooking ANYTHING in a restaurant) My eggs arrived over easy. The "Polish Sausage" was about a step above a butterflied Farmer John dinner frank in both flavor and size. It was "lame".

In my opinion, it seems as though the Gaffey Street Diner has simply become far to complacent with there reputation. The service is ALWAYS friendly but this does not sustain a breakfast spot reputation. I will not return and am saddened by the idea that, once again, a great breakfast spot has gone down the tubes. Perhaps they thought that the novelty of the "John Wayne" is enough......its not for me.

Gaffey street special = awesome sauce! Oh my! I can't wait to go back for breakfast. The dish my husband got was so freaking good! I got a basic breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes. Bacon = heaven, not too crispy but cooked just right.

The place was busy but we went on a weekend morning. Wait time was about 15-20 minutes and there was parking in the lot too!

Friendly service, no frills place. Check it out if you are in the area.

OK, so I heard all the good things about the Gaffey Street Diner and we finally had a chance to try it out.  Definitely a diner atmosphere with a diverse crowd.  Cool photos of the port on the walls.

For a Saturday morning, we got seated quickly.  The wait was only about 5 minutes.  We started with the usual coffee and ordered a Denver Omelette and Corned Beef Hash and Eggs.

Food came out quickly.   I had ordered mine with the biscuits and gravy which appears to be one of their signature items.  It was huge and could be a meal in itself.

The good:  The potatoes were seasoned and cooked to perfection.  They toasted sourdough was delicious and tasted like the bread you get in San Francisco.

The OK:  The biscuit was huge, but with the gravy, it was nothing to write home about.  It tasted the same as anywhere else.  The Denver Omelette was overloaded stuffing and was runny.  It tasted like it was just slopped together and undercooked.

The bad: The Corned Beef Hash.  They said it was home made, and I believe them.  It was gross.  It tasted like they mixed Cream of Mushroom soap in the hash and potatoes.  Stay away.

Will we try it again.  Maybe, but with all the competition out there, this one isn't quite up to par.

My wife and I were in the mood for a steak and eggs-breakfast so we figured we'd try this place.
My wife had the country-fried steak with with eggs and potatoes and I had the sirloin steak with eggs and potatoes.
Aside from the fact that my steak came more well-done than I had requested, our order came as we wanted,( my wife orders her toast dry and the steak with gravy on the side, it's amazing how many places can't get that right).
The servings were big. I had expected a Denny's-sized steak but no this was way bigger. My wife commented that we could have ordered just one plate and split it.
    Service was prompt and courteous.
The food wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. Average is how I'd put it.
We'll go back again and try something else, I'm sure.

If your breakfast goal is simply to stuff yourself silly with food, then Gaffey Street Diner deserves five stars.  If you actually *care* about what you'll be digesting, you should look elsewhere.  Just because cops eat here and it looks delightfully greasy-spoonish on the outside doesn't mean it's some hidden gem that you'll include prominently in this year's Christmas letter.

As someone who awarded five stars to Martha's 22nd Street Bistro (which probably won't survive the next earthquake), I probably have no business critiquing a restaurant's atmosphere.  No problem in this case, as there is none.  It's all the whitewash and linoleum you can stomach, plus some vinyl booths for that divey breakfast charm.  The only visual stimulus worth mentioning is a seal-of-approval poster (with autograph!) from Guy Fieri, better known as the only male left in America who sports frosted hair non-ironically.  And who also shills for TGI Friday's, which is a restaurant not unlike French Laundry, except they sell frozen dinners at Von's.

The offerings at Gaffey Street are standard AM standbies, with a halfhearted attempt at Mexican flair.  This isn't to say that pancakes with syrup and butter isn't a satisfying breakfast, or even that the pancakes are "bad."  It's just...dull.  Nothing I've had on the menu stood out as being terribly unique or even exceptionally good.  Note, though, that the ace in the hole here is the portion size, which is immense.  You don't come here to taste, you come here to eat.  And that's the faintest praise I can muster.

I wish I could give this well known establishment a higher grade, but honestly, I felt like I was eating inside a Soup Kitchen. The decor is somewhat drab (besides the cool enlarged San Pedro photos), and the lighting bad. Some of the flourescent bulbs kept fluttering, which works for a rave, not a sit-down restaurant. The ceilings are low, and with the combination of the flourescent lights, I felt like I was inside a corporate office.

The food tasted good, not great. The portions were huge, which explains the higher price tag (vs. Omelette and Waffle Shop, Rex's Cafe, Pacific Diner). We were a bit disappointed when the scramble eggs were undercooked and somewhat raw. But the wait staff was courteous to cook it more "well." Also, the coffee was watered down and extremely light (without cream).

What is going for the diner is the awesome service of the wait staff. Excellent service all around. They were all very courteous and accomodating. I loved how there is a table that allows the customer to grab any extra napkins, utensils, and to-go boxes.

We were excited to try the Gaffey Street Diner after recently moving to the area and seeing it listed on the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives list.

It's unassuming from the outside, and parking is a little difficult as there are only a few spots in an actual paved lot, the rest are street side or in a grassy, gravel lot. We saw the local fire department there, so we had high hopes.

We walked into an almost empty-diner on a Saturday morning, just after 9am, which was surprising.

The coffee was beyond bad--very bitter and weak.

    The waitress was friendly, though.

Kid's meal 6.50 at a diner? For just an egg, toast, bacon and potatoes? Crazy!

I ended up sharing the French Kiss (french toast, 2 eggs, and 4 strips of bacon) with my 3 year old because I was not about the pay 6.50 for a kid's meal! The french toast was thick, but it was very eggy and not very crisp. The syrup was just standard bottled syrup on the table, not even warmed. Bacon was crisp, but eggs were not quite as I ordered them. My kiddo liked everything though.

My husband ordered the Eggs Florentine. Egg portion was a little small, too much spinach overall (though I will give them credit for using fresh spinach) and there wasn't much bacon. Hollandaise was delicious and you could tell it was made from scratch. Too many of the home fry potatoes, which weren't anything to write home about, though they weren't bad.

The table behind us mentioned that they had been coming for awhile and wanted to know if it was the same owners and management (yes, to both) as the potatoes had changed and a lot of their usual orders weren't quite the same.

There was also a sizable hole in the ceiling (think 10'x6') that was covered with a tarp and duct tape.

Not a bad breakfast, not a great one either. We've had better, and probably could have had similar, if not better food at a local pancake chain, which is too bad because we really wanted to like Gaffey Street!

My mom and I had some time to kill one morning, and since we know the harbor area fairly well and had never tried Gaffey Street Diner, we decided to head here.

I thought the inside was a little weird, one big room where I felt like everything echoed. This is not a really big factor, but the food wasn't up to par either. The coffee was not memorable. I ordered the spanish omelette and it was, as the Yelp star rating puts it, meh.

Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day, and I would not drive over the St. Thomas Bridge to eat breakfast here. I'd chose other breakfast spots in the Harbor Area any day.

On my first visit here about a year and a half ago the food was great, the waitress was nice and friendly, and the service was fast.

I came here the other day excited to try their food again and I was disappointed. I came on a Thursday around 12:30 and the place was filled. We were seated at a table towards the middle of the restaurant but no one bothered to give us a menu. I went to the restroom to wash my hands and came back still with no menu. My BF had to grab a menu himself after he washed his hands. I noticed that the other servers paid more attention to their "regular" customers, chit-chatting a storm but barely paid attention to other tables. I understand relationships with loyal customers are important, but please consider building them with potential future customers as well.

My bf and I split a Gaffey Street Special (I think that's what it's called sorry I forgot). It had chorizo mixed with egg and cheese which was topped with a heap of guacamole. Homestyle potatoes were on the side. I forgot that I ordered this the last time I came here, but this time everything was so bland. I was very disappointed with the service and food quality here. Not sure if I would come back again.

Deliberations ensue and we decide that we want to have the french toast supreme in the center of the table and each order something additonal as our main course.

My friends decide on both ordering the biscuits and gravy with a side of Brobdingnagian Polish sausage - I didn't know sausage came in that size.  I love chorizo, therefore, I order the chorizo scramble.

After a 10 minute wait, our server takes our order and informs us that the french toast supreme is a seasonal item.  WHAT????  We specifically came here for THOSE supreme toasts.

If you are in the mood for the pictured french toast supreme, call ahead to confirm availabillity.  Don't end up like us - shit out of luck.

Nonetheless, I order a chorizo scramble without cheese, as I read in previous reviews that the scramble is salty and that the cheese is processed and that the probability of it coming out of a can is highly likely.  I avoid it like leprosy.  The scramble is incredibly light and fluffy.  I surmise that the eggs are probably whipped and them scrambled with the chorizo.

The biscuits and gravy are good - rich and creamy.  Too much for one individual.  The Polish sausage is delicious but it's excessively sebaceous.

The home fries are savory, lightly crispy and enjoyable.

The coffee is not great, but I had two cups nevertheless.

The pumpkin pancakes were scrumptious. There was a nice balance between denseness and fluffiness.

The service was great, our male server was much nicer than our female server.

We were animated and effervescent because we were so excited to finally feast upon breakfast excellence, but the female server was not entertained nor amused.  : /

    Cheers

I've been coming here for years and way before the DDD show came around. I drive here from Orange County whenever I want my french toast fix. This is one of those diners you tell people they HAVE to try. The food is amazing, fresh, and you can feel the love in it. I've tried their french toast and it was amazingly good. Not too sweet and it hit the spot. I've tried so many things on the menu that it's hard to tell you what the best is. The chorizo is really good and after I saw them on DDD, I saw that they make that and just about everything by hand!

I'll always take the 20 min drive out here for some good and homey food.

Food: We've been there a few times for breakfast and weren't impressed. The food is okay, but there are a lot of better options out there for breakfast.

Service: A little brusque, but efficient.

Ambiance: Kind of a dive-y diner.

Massive portions! One plate is enough to feed 2, but I say, dont stop at ordering one plate, order what your heart desires because everything we ordered was sooooo good!

This was the first time I've ever had biscuits and gravy and I must say, add me onto the fan list! I ordered the gaffey special which consisted of a chorizo omelette, guacamole, tomatoes, breakfast potatoes, and tortillas.... I loved every bite of it... My mind kept telling me to finish it but my stomach was pleading no! lol. My bf ordered the Eggs Benedict with ham and this is the largest benedict ever! The english muffin was soft and crisp on the edges, even with all that hollandaise sauce drenched on it! Freshly squeezed orange juice was sweet and tart and oh so refreshing...

Have I mentioned that EVERYTHING IS MADE FROM SCRATCH??? And also, EVERYTHING IS MADE TO ORDER! That's why you have to wait about 30 mins on a busy day to get your food, but it's worth it! Everything was simply perfection!  Next time, I definitely want to try the french toast with the layers and layers of fruits on it, I hate myself for not ordering it this time around, but there WILL BE a next time, and this plate WILL BE in my order!

Lastly, the servers are absolutely wonderful! They're so friendly and accommodating here! Love love love loved it!

OVER-HYPED: I've been here four separate times wanting to like it but ending up not. Don't expect anything more than meals prepared by a self taught line-cook, not a chef. As long as you know this you won't be disappointed. The coffee is thin and weak. If a diner can't make this right it should send off alarms immediately for you. The food overall has the same textural featurelessness from one dish to another, something similar to mush. It may be your kind of place and bring back fond childhood memories if you grew up with parents that didn't know how to cook. The interior is bland but clean and has only two windows with a view of Gaffey Street's busy off-the-freeway ramp traffic. Not hip or fun place, more for the geriatric or entrenched crowd.

If you're willing to make the trek, a better place is "Eat At Joe's" in Redondo Beach. The food is tastier, with large portions too; they have free wi-fi, wider age cross section, plenty of windows overlooking PCH. It's a fun vibrant place to hang out with a serving staff that's friendly and nice to look at.

Big portions. A Diners, drive ins & dives featured joint. Website sucks but the food was great. We did the John Wayne and the Biscuits and Gravy. Had to get a to-go box because the portions were huge.

    Another winner for sure.

Is it too strong to say this place sucks? 3 walking blocks from my house and you'd have to force me a gunpoint to ever go back here. Cold food that takes forever to get to your table and likely as not is not properly cooked. Horrible, rude staff that seems to think they are doing you a favor. I once had a sever follow me out and demand I leave her a larger tip. There is nothing to recommend this place in my view, keep driving, go past Omelete and Waffle House and go to Pacific or the Lighthouse. If you want nasty and ill prepared just go to the Dennys' up on Wester.

A serious contender for most awesome breakfast burrito in the South Bay emerges...

Nice little cafe-style restaurant at the North tip of San Pedro near the 47 & 110 FWY's. I had never been, and was always wondering what it might be like inside. Finally, on a somewhat eponymous afternoon, I decided to sate my curiosity.

Non-descriptive rectangle building leads you into a timewarp. It could have been any decade from 1969 up (except for the flat screen TV). I liked it. I saw what nearby diners were having and was amazed at the portions size! Have I passed my expiration date, and gone to egg heaven?? Waaay too many delectable-sounding choices, so I opted for my familiar standard BB. This wonderful item was placed before me, and brought a smile to my lips. A thing of beauty I tell you...

No disappointments here my friends, just nice service, and great looking, tasty comfort food! High marks for genuine down-to-earth customer service.

Will DEFINITELY COME BACK AGAIN...  :)
