One would think that a 'big box' electronics retail establishment such as Future Shop would be fairly predictable and fairly consistent across the board, and I would venture to say that one would be wrong in thinking so, for all was not well at the Future Shop on Sweden Way, Richmond, and I can attribute my lacklustre retail experience to one especially surly salesman named Alfredo.
While salespeople can be effortlessly cool, effortlessly knowledgeable, or effortlessly fresh, Alfredo was simply effortless. He patrolled the environs with a certain smugness about, and only approached us after we had been perusing the Apple iPads for about 10 minutes.
I had asked him what I thought to be a fair question about whether the device supported iOS 4, to which he responded with a shrug and a remark about iTunes. I sensed he was reaching. I ended up borrowing one of their demo notebooks to Google an answer myself (no iOS 4 support yet, for those curious).
We wandered about for another 10 minutes, looking at the accessories available, when Alfredo returned simply to snap at us for having not left our bags at the front of the store.
Dismayed at the effortless lack of tact and glaring absence of any warmth or courtesy, we were prepared to leave the store out of spite to award our sales commissions to another, more deserving sales representative. However, the urgent craving for the Cupertino-designed gadgetry got the better of us and we returned to seal the deal.
After requesting the device, Alfredo kept us waiting another five awkward minutes, where he stood about, kept checking his watch, all with neither a word nor a smile, yet the air was thick with impatience and disinterest.
It was at the cashier's counter that our choice sales representative made the most effort of the evening - pointing out to the girl at the cash desk to make sure his name was logged properly on the system so he would get his cut, upon which he promptly walked away, without a word of thanks.
Am I being too harsh on this one outlet for the mis-servicing of one sales representative? I could have taken my business to any number of other retailers that evening, and I think such a lacklustre lack of service needs to be acknowledged. Plus, this is still the first review for this particular location, so if I'm mistaken, I'm sure other Yelpers will step up and speak out! I, for one, will be looking at other Future Shop locations (or other sales representatives) for my future gadget cravings. -

Taking customer service to new lows...even for Future Shop. How does this store stay in business for heaven's sake?
