Most of the work I do is on my laptop, my laptop is like the blood and soul of my existence! Imagine my grief when the mother board of my computer decided to travel to laptop heaven?
Now I did a lot of searching and comparison shopping for weeks: Best Buy, Dell website, Computer Trends. I decided finally on Future Shop in the Northland Mall. There wasn't much difference in the end in prices between Best Buy and Future Shop; both carried the same lines, inventory and guarantees.
But what I was most impressed was the salesperson I dealt with. A young man name Chris who approached me immediately when I entered his department area. I was automatically flung into a world of laptop options and selections. He gave me basic information in a language I could understand about the pros and cons of each item.
I ended up with the HP computer that I now have and bought the complete software and virus protection etc with his assistance. Chris was there through the whole process.
After purchasing my computer not only did Chris give me the number to call in his department he also gave me his private cell phone to be sure that I was happy with my purchase.
I have called him twice since with questions about programs and things not even related to my well functioning laptop and he has always been graciously helpful in all aspects.
I don't know if this is the normal attention each client gets when going to Future Shop Northland but all I know is that I will now return there for all my computer quirks and needs. -

A few quick facts:
1) Future Shop and Best Buy are owned by the same company.
2) Future Shop sales people are paid on commission.
3) Both offer comparable price match guarantees.
So although very similar, I do not enjoy being in Future Shop. Sure, the prices and selection are about the same, but the atmosphere and level of service are subpar at best at Future Shop.
Now, this specific Future Shop isn't too bad. Based on my experiences, this is exclusively due to the service. They are not too aggressive and seem to care a bit more than anywhere else. But this may be due to the Best Buy no more than 100 feet away.
I still find it hard to justify shopping at Future Shop. Especially when a Best Buy is so close. But Future Shop does have some items that Best Buy doesn't, so that may explain the appeal. But beyond that, I'm not sure. -

I was impressed with this place because of their price-beating policy. The product I was buying was $10 cheaper at Best Buy across the hall, but the girl at Future Shop beat the price by 10 per cent. That's a deal at any price.
So, I saved some money and that's what it's all about....That aside, I've always been pleased with my shopping experience at Future Shop. They have quality merchandise and some fine days you can even obtain some of it on sale at cheaper prices.
And keep that price-beating thing in mind the next time you're looking at a big purchase. They will beat a competitor's price by 10 per cent. And that could add up...... -

I have never been a big supporter of big box stores. Yes, they combine TV, gaming, appliances, computer stuff into a single store. But the staff who help you are not really knowledgeable about the product they are selling. If you're an average joe, you might get some useful information, or might be convinced into buying something that is not actually good. An expert in a particular product category can usually detect BS from a salesman (ie. Monster cables for A/V equipment). The fact that they make commission on a lot of things is more incentive for them to spew out BS about products.
The other complaint is that there are some products not worth buying from big box stores because of their price. A/V accessories (cables, adapters), computer parts (video cards, RAM, cables) to name a few. They are marked so high here. Monster cables that go for $50-200 at Future Shop will go for under $10 at a place like Memory Express or http://monoprice.com. The cheaper ones might be generic brand, but cables are all the same if its a digital connection. It either works or it doesn't. For computer parts, you're better off going to Memory Express or http://ncix.com.
There are still certain things worth buying here, mainly things that aren't marked up much and don't have a big profit margin. DVDs, video games, and Apple products will be the same at FS and anywhere else that sell them because they can't be discounted much.
Their price matching policy is also fair. Depending if the employee is in a good mood, they sometimes match online stores.
In summary, there are better (and cheaper) sources than FS for many things. Just do your research about a particular electronic if you plan on talking to a FS rep. I hate it when people get swindled into buying something they don't need.
