Review from Mel M.
After trekking through Toronto seeking out the perfect Butter Tart I came upon the Future Bakery located inside the St. Lawrence Market. At first I was overwhelmed by the large selection of various flavored tarts. I wanted to try them all. However, I thought to myself "stick with your mission, pace yourself, get the Butter Tart". But after one bite of their Butter Tart it had me wishing I could go back in time and reverse that mistake. The center left a horrible after taste in my mouth and the crust is barely worth mentioning. It was just bad. If I could do it over again I would have gone with the Custard Tart or one of their many other tarts.
Despite my bad experience with the Butter Tart I would still come back to try one of their other baked goods afterall something has to be good here, right? -

This review is only for the Florentines since this was the only thing I tried. I typically love florentines ... but I am not a fan of the ones from Futures.
The chocolate on the chocolate florentine is waxy and tastes cheap. The vanilla florentine is slightly better but the icing is pretty sweet and can get sickening. The cookie itself was little soggy and soft instead of crisp like I like it. The cookie also seemed to have absorbed all the smells from the St. Lawrence Market. This is not a good thing for a cookie.
So disappointed :( -

Located in the St. Lawrence Market within the Esplanade community.
Not my favorite future's bakery. Parking cost and limited hours means low product turn over. The food is not fresh and frankly is a wee bit overpriced. Coffee is below average for the Front street area. The decor and fresh bread makes it a 3 star. -

You really understand how unenchanting futures is when it is not a student haunt and just a stand in the St. Lawrence. While it still has it's proper functions- being a bakery and all, it has ZERO charm sans Annex-location.
Yes it sells more stuff than the Annex spot -various breads and tarts that aren't available at the other location. But why oh WHY would you buy it from Futures when you could go to the downstairls carousol bakery in the market and practicallly salivate a river for the delicious breads and pastries down there?
Yesh.. go elsewhere- there is plenty of selection elsewhere that I would define as more "artisan" than futures within the st. lawrence market. -

I have very few rituals in my life, but one of them takes place every time I go to St. Lawrence Market. When I'm there I have to get a butter tart from Future Bakery. I can't say that they have the best butter tarts I've ever had, but they are always good and they always have delicious variations. There was a time when I was a butter tart purist when I was insulted by even the though of a raisin or pecan sullying my delicious tart, but Future opened my eyes and now I go crazy. My personal favorite at the moment is their chocolate butter tart, yes you read that correctly. The crust is chocolate and there is a chocolate drizzle and if you can avoid the almost inevitable heart attack it is worth the calories. I would recommend Future Bakery to everyone who goes to St. Lawrence market looking for an in shopping pick me up.

Solid selection of cookies and baked goods. The coffee seemed popular as well. Reasonable butter tart and carrot cake. Not mind- blowing. Good value and location.

Situated smack dab in the middle of the main floor of the St. Lawrence Market is this bakery which offers slices as well as full cakes and other dessert and breakfast items. I thought it was OK but definitely not on the Dufflet level. I'd stick with that as my first choice.
