Review from Marc D.
Vancouver, BC
* Old Chinatown vs. New Chinatown egg tart showdown *
As my quest for the perfect egg tart (http://www.yelp.ca/lis...) continues this was the latest stop.
I was intrigued when I walked in and saw what looked like a machine where they were keeping the egg tarts warm. But then realized it wasn't. It was just a lighted box. Hm......Odd.
The tart itself was actually pretty good though. It had a fairly flaky and crispy crust. The custard was also pleasant with a nice eggy flavour.
This is among the better ones I've found in the Vancouver area so far, but I still have to give the lead to New Town in Chinatown: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
I am partial to those that are still fresh from the oven I guess!
I must say it is ironic that an old school HK style bakery in the old Chinatown is called "New Town." I guess it was new back when they opened originally? But overall I suppose the old Chinatown in Vancouver still has an egg tart leg up on the newer Chinatown in Richmond. Go figure!
Maybe when someone opens up "New New Town" in Richmond it will be the egg tart leader?!?!?!?! -
Review from Laura P.
Hmm. I found their prices cheaper than Mega Bakery but figure that Furama Bakery must use inferior ingredients. The winter melon cake we got was not as flaky as I'm used to, but my husband was happy with it because it didn't make a mess. Our little girl ate the whole winter melon cake, minus a few bites for her mom and dad. I thought it was just ok but I can get over the smell of this bakery. Not so appetizing but I thought that I'd give them a go.
