I've had the opportunity to eat at many of Charlestons best restaurants and I have to say that this one is up at the top. The ambiance of this place is great; has the feeling of an old world Italian restaurant that screams great food and it didn't disappoint.
Started out with the olive plate which had a nice diversity of olives that went well with my sparkling wine. I skipped an appetizer but only because I had to make sure I could eat both the bolognese and the espresso rubbed filet that I had ordered. The bolognese was perfection served over tagliatelle and there was not a remnant left on anyones plate. As to the filet it was fantastic, equal to any steak that I have had at the Oak or Halls Chop House. Desert was an orange creme cheese cake and was not too big and not too smal.
All in all, I would highly recommend that anyone visiting Charleston put Fulton Five on their list of dining destinations -

It's funny... the very evening after dining at Fulton Five and learning that it has been voted the most romantic restaurant in Charleston 13 years in a row, we had dinner with a couple who got engaged there. They spoke of the table they sat at and how wonderful the waiter and food was that evening. Fifteen years after their engagement, the restaurant has not changed.
Tucked away in the Historic District on Fulton Street is another one of Charleston's hidden gems for dining, Fulton Five. It seats about 40+ people which includes seating at the bar, which was full. We were joined for dinner by our friends Dennis and Ginger owners of Carolina Coastal Properties (http://ccpsc.net). We were warmly greeted by the hostess and quickly seated at a banquette table.
Our waiter, David was personable, knowledgeable and a delight. He reviewed the specials, took our drink order and was back in a flash. The menu is interesting and inviting. It was almost difficult to decide
on what to order since there were so many enticing options.
We started with the Insalata di Romaine (Romaine, croutons, cucumbers and a Parmesan Vinaigrette), the Antipasto Spoleto. The Soleto is an interesting little number consisting of prosciutto and mozzarella wrapped in a romaine leaf and then grilled! Seasoned with a balsamic vinaigrette.
The appetizer special of the evening - a ravioli (stuffed with a delightful short rib filling with a veal au jus), was something that sounded too good to miss so we ordered that as well.
The appetizers did not disappoint. The Spoleto was very tasty and a combination that was new to us. Where else do you see grilled romaine leaves???
Dinner also proved to be outstanding. The evening's dinner special was a grilled pork belly nestled in a nice veal reduction and paired with colorful sweet potato hash. This was one of our table's selections and it was enjoyed to the fullest.
The Veal Osso Bucco cooked slowly in a veal stock was served over risotto with a small bone as a garnish. Accompanying this was a tiny fork that could be used to get the flavorful marrow out of the bone -what a treat! The Filet d'Espresso (Chocolate Espresso Rubbed Filet served over Whipped Potatoes, Asparagus and a Balsamic-Veal Jus) was cooked perfectly. Although the flavors of chocolate or espresso did not come through, it was still enjoyable.
The evening's entrée special was a local Grouper served over a lobster and shrimp risotto. The fish was so tender that it fell apart at the approach of a fork. The risotto was perfect - hot and so flavorful.
The entire meal was wonderful. David continued to be a terrific addition to the meal. Although he was busy with many tables, he and his assistant made sure that we did not want for anything during our stay.
With its intimate setting and cozy atmosphere it's easy to see why it's been crowned the "Most Romantic" restaurant in Charleston. But come for the food and the service, you will not be disappointed. -

We asked around for a good restaraunt.... Fulton 5 was said to be one of the best in charleston... "if we could get in"
We had just finished up a night walking tour and it was late, we called Fulton 5 and just got an answering machine telling us to leave a message if we wanted to make a reservation
We decided to walk over and see if we could get in. We were seated at about 930 pm.
The restaraunt is small and dimly lit, our waitress was friendly. I ordered a gin and tonic and my husband a whiskey sour. My drink was fine, he said his was a bit weak.
We were served bread and olive oil with our drinks and we ordered the seafood salad appetizer. I ordered the lamb and my husband ordered the mahi mahi and we had a half order of the mushroom ravioli.
The seafood salad was good, fresh and light but a small portion atop a bed of cabbage $12. The mushroom ravioli was clearly hand made and was delicious but was only 3 raviolis... (it was a half order but i found myself surprised at the portion for $9. My husband liked his mahi mahi (he eats just about anything) I asked for my lamb on the rare side and It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It came on a bed of risoto and I found it had a starchy flavor - almost like boxed foods taste. The Demi glace was very rich- as it should have been but it overpowered the flavor of the meat.
I liked the meal but did not find that it rated the reviews we had been hearing from the locals. -

This fabulous hidden away restaurant use to be my backyard for a couple years. Very romantic spot, only 15 tables. When the weather isn't scorching hot, you can sit outside on their upstairs terrace. Great food, friendly service and did I mention ROMANTIC! Great wine list and very knowledgable.
Reservations are essential since it's so small. -

i was unable to get a table and that's a good sign. we ate at the bar which was even better. great conversation, great wine, the olive oil was the best i'd ever had, and the food was great. it wasn't like my grandmother's but it was delicious. the atmosphere was perfect as well. it seems like a hidden gem.

Stumbled upon this quaint little Italian restaurant. I didn't know a thing about it, but we were at the right place at the right time! It was just before the dinner rush so we were able to be seated! Lucky us! My 2 girls and I enjoyed a delicious dinner of salad and pastas. We will be back!

Almost minus a star for the NOISE! How this can be considered romantic, I know not!!! David was our fabulous server. They were able to fit in two more on a reservation for four on a busy evening. Two of the six had picky requests and were accomodated with a smile. They were happy with their veal and grouper, fixed to their specs. The seafood appetizer looked like an ice cream sundae and was even richer than one! The mushroom/spinich salad came warm and with extra asiago. The ravioli, the pasta special, the shrimp fettucine...all delicious (especially the creamy shrimp dish). Totally satisfying evening!

For every Foodie, many of our food fancies, start and end with cravings for Italian. The Greeks may have fathered civilization, but the Italians ran with it all, and Greeks simply don't have all of those wines. Italian food is rustic, basic, plentiful, flavorful, soulful, and also sophisticated. It has elements of the commoner, and the ricco. And, I won't be the first to make the association, but the mere phrase, "home cooking" or "good home cooked meal," brings to mind "Mama," and the "home", so in some sense, the mention of Italian cuisine, evokes a pleasure in people, unlike others. For the Foodie, its like the architect hearing of the arch or aqueduct, it harks of where Foodie ideals were first erected. Which is always how Fulton Five has struck me inside of the Foodie world. Not to mention, where my palate first came alive to the music of truly great wine. Fulton Five is perfectly named, in the sense that its address, 5 Fulton St, is a destination, but also boasts of its confidence as a permanent Foodie edifice inside of one of America's most beautiful historic cities. Albeit, their building is probably an old carriage house or slave quarter, predating the restaurant, they have built something great here and the location might as well have been built just for them. They have certainly made it "home" for many area and visiting Foodies. The word intimate and warm comes to mind when I think of Fulton Five. And right off of the bustling shopping district of King Street, most notably near Saks 5th Avenue, one wouldn't come to expect such calm and relaxation. But a part of Fulton Five's appeal for certain Foodies, is that its just enough removed from other vestiges of night life and other restaurants, that when the nearby antique shops & other boutiques close, Fulton Five is just coming to life. So even more to the home idea in the sense that its like someone has left the light on for you there and they're cooking something great inside. But they're cooking for those with mature tastes and attitudes, and for those that dress the part here, you'll feel a tad more at home. No snobbery from the staff or kitchen, and is a relaxing, fun environ, but wouldn't describe the main dining area as one for letting loose or as laid back as possibly a trattoria. Their out door dining area, a little more casual, FYI. Like many Foodies, in a former lifetime I was an olive grove & olive oil magnate, so naturally I like to start out with their antipasta "spiced olives." You'll find your typical yellow, black & red cerignolas, along with baresanes and probably one or two you've not tried. Because Charleston is cousin to Italy's Spoleto Festival, and holds its own world class, art & music festival every Spring, you'll be hard pressed, especially if a prosciutto, mozzerella & balsamic, "tifo," not to try their Antipasto Spoleto. Its the stuff of Foodie sins. Speaking of which, I've sold my soul to risotto more than once in my life, and their Primi w/roasted red & yellow tomatoes, zuchini, squash, capers and vincotto, prompted all 9000 of my tastebuds to break into a chorus of "Figaro!" And for a Secondi of surprise, I recently went for their pan seared crabcakes w/sauteed corn, fava beans and red onions finished with tomato basil butter and it was done to perfection. We Foodies are crabcake snobs after all and theirs were a hit! In place of commenting to all of the wonderful seafood, lamb, veal, filet or their stunning tiramisu and other desserts, I want to speak wine. Their wine selection is of local legend, and the food, almost an excuse just to consume. Fulton Five has all of the great cordials too, but if you must have great Italian wines, it would be hard to point you to another spot in Charleston with as much pride for pursuit of keeping it interesting. I will press you to their website for the menu that is as varied in price, as it is, represented by region. They also have fairly up to date dinner & dessert menus. A part of the trick of Fulton Five, is knowing when to go, so yes, reservations are ideal, but if hoping on the fly to make it, go before 7pm, less Spoleto Season which is a little harder, but not impossible. It also doesn't hurt to seek out "David" as your waiter, as other than the chef, has earned a rep as the keystone of the dining experience in so far as Foodie advisement. Finally, Fulton Five's "Specials" are truly that, and I often travel here just to see what they'll touch my soul with next. To Fulton Five I say, "Vivi a lungo!"

Fulton Five is our designated special date night. My husband and I have celebrated birthdays, new jobs, and our engagement there. We even had our rehearsal dinner there and I arranged my company's holiday party at Fulton Five. The service is impeccable, the food is indescribable and the feeling you have when you leave is perfection. My husband is now deployed and the wait staff demands that I come in on a regular basis while he is gone. They treat me like royalty every time I walk in, all simply because they are loyal to their diners and strive for 100% satisfaction for everyone they serve. You will not be disappointed when you go!

Being an Italian from the north, I expected a lot. My appetizer was a cheese & prosciutto wrapped lettuce leaf which was a mistake. The prosciutto was stringy however, my wife's mussels were perfect. The main courses were overall good. The only negative which ruined the experience was that they added a 20% gratuity to the full taxed amount where they should have done it pre-tax. The food warranted a good tip and they got that. What they got in addition was a customer who will never return.
