    YUM, YUM, YUM!!!!!

I just grabbed Fujiyama take out and it was fantastic. The sushi was fresh and delicious, the service was quick and courteous, the price was excellent. I've been to the restuarant for sit down lunch but I've never had their take-out before. I can't wait for the chance to go back again.

I really had high hopes for this place, but was let down on my first lunch-time visit.

It was a friend's birthday, and she wanted sushi, so I suggested we try the highly recommended Fujiyama over our usual spot. The place has character, there's no mistaking that.  Down some stairs, up some more, around a corner, and down a hall; getting to the dining area is a bit of a maze challenge.

Our party of two was tucked away into a little alcove.  While it was private, and probably well-suited for a first date couple, we felt a little isolated, even more so when wait staff often blew past us despite us calling out after them for service.

It took at least ten minutes before our order was taken, and then at least another 30 minutes before our food arrived.  I understand the concept of fresh sushi, made to order, but when you're pressed for time over the lunch hour and the restaurant isn't even half full, the wait was a little surprising.  What was even more disappointing was the fact that my order arrived completely wrong.  I ordered one lunch special, and got something completely different.  Our waitress was gone the second the plates touched the table, so I had to flag down a bus boy to ask for the right order.  By the time the right food arrived at the table, some 20 minutes later, my friend had already finished her lunch and we were running late coming back to the office.  What I managed to scarf down was good, but definitely wasn't worth the 50 minute wait.

I might be convinced to give it another try, because for the price, the food was decent.  I liked the shrimp roll and the chicken teriyaki was good.  But if I ever do go back, it definitely won't be while I have a time constraint, and I won't want to sit in that alcove again.

Fujiyama hasn't quite stolen the crown of my favourite sushi place from Sushi Nami, but it comes in a very, very close second and has the potential to overtake. I don't eat fish, so when I go for sushi, it's all about the vegetarian options. The reason I hesitated coming here is because it didn't look like there were many choices for a non-seafood eater. And there aren't, but the stuff they have is fan-frigging tastic.

The vegetarian combo comes with a whole ton of rolls, plus salad and miso soup for like, $13! Holy value, batman. Especially considering the variety on the plate and how tasty everything was. My table-mates (who were all fish eaters, save one) were all smiles and happily nomming rolls off each others' plates.

Sushi Nami has more of an upscale feel and atmosphere (I think Fujiyama could stand to get some new chairs and tables) but the quality is just as good, and the price can't be beat. The service was good and low-key. It must be a challenge in a space with so many cavernous rooms to keep tabs on everyone, especially considering we were a large group.

    I will be back.

Delicious sushi in the old La Cave location! I love this place and was happy to see that another resto had taken up shop there....I know, I know.....where have I been that I've not noticed a new tenant in this space?? Anyway, I digress.....the food was yum, yum, yummy...soup starters, tempura, veggie rolls, dragon rolls, hot & spicy and a small plate of sashimi - heavenly!! Dessert, unfortunately was a disappointment....we should have left it at just enjoying an awesome meal and gone elsewhere for dessert & coffee because deep fried banana and cheesecake just isn't my thing.....should have opted for the green tea ice cream, which I know would have been a much better choice than the other 2! Oh well, live & learn and no dessert @ Fujiyama in the future, but I sure will be back to enjoy their lunch specials and/or take-out!!

    Oh Fujiyama, I heart thee.

This is hands down my favourite sushi joint in the city. I crave their sushi. My favourite roll is the crispy spicy salmon roll. Deep fried spicy salmon roll with spicy mayo and honey wasabi? It is the stuff sushi dreams are made of. It's decadent and so delicious. The spicy sweet potato roll is a close second. The spicy scallop roll with green onion and tempura bits rounds out my top 3. I have yet to try a roll I didn't enjoy here.

I've also very much enjoyed the edamame, sweet potato tempura, shrimp tempura and mixed tempura (clearly I love me some tempura).

I have fond memories of the old LaCave, so this place holds a bit of nostalgia for me. Fujiyama has used the space well. You can find nooks and crannies for an intimate dinner date, but there are larger spaces for group dining as well.

I've never had a problem with service here - it's always been friendly, timely and efficient.

I could really go for some sushi and Sapporo right now... mmm.

Okay, this is based on only one lunch visit - but that visit was pretty good.

It was neat to be back in the old La Cave space and the sushi was tasty. They had a good lunch deal (about $9 for two different kids of rolls plus soup) and the sushi was tasty. Granted, I'm no sushi connoisseur (I've only recently become more adventurous with my sushi). I totally dug my spicy tuna roll and avocado roll. My only lunch regret? I should have gone for the slightly pricier lunch special (three different kinds of rolls), because I was still a little hungry afterwards.

The service was okay, but not stellar. Not nearly as bad as what others here have experienced, but I wouldn't write home about it. One of the people I was dining with had trouble getting the server's attention so she could get a fork for her salad. In the end, she just got up and asked for one.

Oh Fujiyama, once an office ritual for lunch on Fridays. The lunch specials are great, but also make me a little sad when I end up paying twice as much for the same meal at supper.

Prepare to spend roughly an hour for lunch on a normal day, but the wait can be a little longer if it's busy. That being said, the sushi is delicious and your patience will be rewarded. Just order a green tea or Sapporo to pass the time.

    So. I've been wow-ed. I didn't see it coming but I was.

I'm a bit of a sushi slut, in all fairness. I loves me a certain roll at a place over here, I loves me the takeout at a place over there, frankly...as long as there was tempura sweet potato involved, I've been pretty easy to please. But now? Oh how the game has changed.

First off, this classic Halifax venue finally seems to have landed a restaurant who can maintain a hold on its cavernous tunnels and eating nooks. It's worth checking out just for that alone.

Second, the servers are hip, friendly, and attentive. I considered docking a star because he got a little frazzled attempting to clear us all out after the lunchtime rush, but it seemed rather harsh. Overall, he was great!

Third, the house salad is among the best I've ever had. The ginger dressing was divine, definitely made fresh, and plentiful over the bright, crunchy veggies. I love the salad as much as I love the sushi when I go out for this sort of meal, so trust that I'm not messing around here.

And lastly, well, the rolls were fantastic. Definitely the best I've had in the city. Flavourful, perfectly contained, and served at a much better price than you can get elsewhere - surprising since the place has an upscale feel to it that most others don't. For the lunchtime special, I was able to name a spicy avocado roll, a tempura sweet potato roll, a vegetable roll (didn't looove this one), and the aforementioned salad for $12.99. Typically I'd be at $15.00 for just the first two rolls, no salad.

Well done, Fujiyama. I'll be back more often than you'd think possible.

I would love to give this place 5 stars. In fact, the sushi is so effing delicious that it alone could win the 5 stars.... Alas....... The service?
    Horrible.....

I've eaten here twice, and I have the say, the quality, value and deliciousness of the sushi alone would keep me coming back. However!
Went in last night with a friend around 7:30pm, were told to sit at a dirty table that stayed that way for about 10min. After it was eventually cleared, we had to ask to have it wiped, and for menus. We weren't given the option of drinks.... We finally had or order taken about 30min after we arrived. Food was slow to arrive, expected as they were fairly busy with take-out and dining room orders. The unexpected part? When the sushi-chef/maker guy caught my eye and gestured to my plate sitting on the counter for me to come get it and serve myself! That's cool- I get that the staff was busy and he was only trying to make sure I got my dinner before I grabbed the poor lone gold-fish from his tank beside my table and ate it instead...

Our server seemed like a nice enough guy, but he didn't apologize once for the wait, the shoddy service or our empty glasses of both water and beer...

Fujiyama- I love your sushi! It is amazing! But I fear I cannot come back until you hire more servers or get your shiz together.....

Over the last few months Fujiyama has become one of my favourite lunchtime destinations.  The atmosphere is very cozy and unique and i'm actually able to relax a little during my lunch break.

The lunch specials are delicious and reasonably priced and the service is great.

I typically order the three roll combo that comes with their house salad.  I can eat sushi like it's my job so two rolls just won't do.  Their ginger dressing is some of the very best I've had in the city.  Their sweet potato tempura roll is also to die for.  Granted, I don't think I have ever had anything bad to say about a sweet potato tempura roll but theirs is definitely special.  Add the spicy sauce and call it a party!  I would also recommend their Alaska and Dynamite rolls.  I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

I would recommend Fujiyama to anyone and will continue to go back.

    ********Drumroll Please*********

Here it is, Delicious Sushi In Halifax!!
    Yay!!

Given my negative experiences in the past with other Halifax sushi joints, I was absolutely delighted to find this gem. These chefs could teach all other Halifax sushi chefs a thing or two about what they do best.

We were greeted and seated promptly be our friendly waitress, right by the fish tank and sushi bar. Upon exploring the packed dining area on a quest for the washrooms, I decided that next time I would make reservations in the beautiful main section, with its stunning winding rooms and passageways and natural brick and mortar.

Our first dish, agedashi tofu, came not extremely quickly, but as slow as might be expected as busy as it was. The tofu was worth the wait however, since it was possibly the best I've ever had. It was not too soft, not too hard, and clearly freshly made.

I also had the vegetable roll and inari nigiri. I was very happy to see that the vegetable maki had neither carrots nor lettuce, but did have avocado. Then again that's just my personal taste. The Inari was very tasty, just right and not stuffed too the brim with rice.

If you're thinking, "but what about the meat?!" then I have to tell you about boyfriend's dish. He ordered the chicken and veggie teriyaki, which he enjoyed very much. According to his taste buds, the chicken tasted char grilled, like it was done over a bbq, perfectly seasoned, with just the right ratio of meat to veggies.

The only thing that surprised me negatively was the tea - not complimentary in a Japanese restaurant? Did I accidentally step into an alternate dimension where this is normal and giraffes rule the earth? Then again, maybe it's a Halifax thing.

Oh Fujiyama, how I heart thee.
This has been my favourite lunch spot for awhile now.

First of all, the price: The lunch specials just can't be beat. Just $8.99 for 2 rolls and miso soup or salad! The price for the same thing at dinner would be closer to $17 anywhere else.

Second, the choice: You would think for a cheaper price your choices would be limited to the "cheaper" rolls. Au contraire - there's a variety of choices from the average California or avocado rolls to dynamite roll, spicy scallop (personal fav) and Alaska rolls.

Third, the service: Last week I had lunch with a friend and ordered an extra roll with the intention of having something ready for a quick dinner. I asked for my left-over's to go and when the server came back to the table she passed me a plastic bag with a takeout container inside. When I got back to my office I went to put the takeout container into the fridge and discovered the server included napkins, chop sticks and even a small container of soya sauce in the bag! I was pretty impressed to say the least.

Last, but certainly not least: The taste! As a sushi lover, every time I eat sushi I think to myself, awesome! This is good stuff. However, it's not until I eat Fujiyama sushi that I realize how great their sushi really is. When I place each piece of their delicious rolls into my mouth I'm like this is some DAMN good sushi!

Long story short - I love Fujiyama.
Great price, choices, service and taste. What more would you ask for?

THE TOOK THE CROWN FROM DORAKU

I went to Fujiyama just after they opened and to be honest I wasn't very impressed. A co-worker finally convinced me to go back last week however and I have been back two more times since then.

The Nigiri is fantastic, always fresh (only complaint: you have to ask for them to include wasabi on the rice)

The rolls are really stunning. Even a simple Spicy Salmon roll is amped up with crispy tempura bits and just the right amount of rice.

Negatives: Their Miso is meh and their salad is just a glop of ginger dressing on some iceberg lettuce. Doraku still has the soup/udon/salad crown.

My favorite Japanese restaurant in Halifax! It's nice to see a spot finally settle into the cave like space. The menu here is extensive, with lots of options for fish lovers, meat eaters and vegetarians alike. I'm a big fan of their lunch menu options, lots of choices at really reasonable prices.

My favorite is the veggie tempua lunch. For $6.95 I get a miso soup, rice, and a big portion of fried vegetables, including broccoli, eggplant, zucchini, squash and sweet potato, yum yum! I also love their veg maki rolls, and I find the chicken teriyaki combos are a really good deal as well. I also find  their edamame has the right amount of salt on them. There is a small wine and beer selection including Sapporo. I've tried the Tempua Cheesecake, which is basically a fozen piece of cheesecake, battered in tempura batter and deep fried. It's very rich and best to split between 2 or more people, but the flavour is good and it's a nice combo of hot and cold.

Delicious! Definitely my favorite sushi spot in the city.

I've been to fujiyama quite a bit and am never disappointed. The atmopshere is quite charming with the various sections and litle nooks. I was lucky enough to get a private nook one evening and it provided my date and I with the the perfect private dining experience.

My all time favorites are the spicy tuna and scallop (can't choose which I like best) and the hawaii roll.

I find the prices very fair for the quality of food you receive. Although the service we experienced the other night was not 100% up to par, once the food hit the table, the wait was worth it.

They also have amazing lunch specials - $8.99 for two maki rolls and your choice of either salad or miso soup.

    I highly recommend this spot!

Love Fujiyama's sushi. Hate their service.

Fujiyama seems to prepare their sushi differently from other local restaurants; instead of one piece of fish in the center of a roll (or on top) they somehow blend their ingredients for a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth effect. Might sound strange but worth a try.

Crispy spicy tuna is recommended for something a little different from the typical sushi.

Service is atrocious. On a Saturday night expect about a 20 minute wait before your order is taken. I would love to give Fujiyama a five-star rating for their great location, atmosphere and quality of food but their service is so bad that I think it warrants losing two stars.

    Sushi for everyone!

Seriously - sushi for everyone! Whether you like traditional sushi, "North american sushi," fusion sushi or you don't like sushi at all, I think everyone will be happy here.

I can only speak first-hand about the vegetarian sushi but my omnivore friends seem to enjoy the wider menu as much as I enjoy the veg one!

Let's start with selection: HUGE! And not just for the omnivores; lots of veg options as well. The sweet potato rolls? Amazing. The best sushi roll I've ever had.

You may have to wait a bit for your order (a small kitchen and they ensure everyone at your table is served simultaneously), so I recommend ordering an appetizer as soon as sit down. But it's well worth the wait.

If you're hesitant to try something, share with a friend. Serving sizes are just right for an individual or you divvy it up.

For dessert, I do recommend the cheesecake. Which has been flash-fried in tempura. It's not the perfect dessert: sometimes it's still a bit cold in the middle (but they don't want to over cook it either) and the drizzle is ... not what you'd expect. But it all comes together to be a great treat!

If you're going on a weekend night, call ahead and make a reservation.

I have been hearing a lot of buzz around Fujiyama, some from Yelp users and by word-of-mouth which is why I am a tad bit disapointed.

The atmosphere was great, kinda dark but very cozy.

Prices were moderate, and service was alright.

My friend and I had a seaweed salad to start, very tasty. We followed our salad with 5 rolls to share: Hamachi, Salmon Skin, Dynamite, Spicy Tuna and an Alaska roll. The fish was fresh and tasted very good. One issue I have is the lack of rice on the rolls-a very, very thin layer of rice. Also, almost every roll fell apart before I could get them to my mouth. This was disapointing, I hate when this happens.

I'll probably be back, but it will not be my first choice for sushi downtown

So I am not an expert on sushi-mainly as I am allergic to seafood. But I HAVE been to most of the places in town and I know what I like. And what I like is this place. Tonight was my first time in.

    1. It's in the old La Cave spot, so it's super cozy and cool inside.

    2. My standard order of avocado rolls were tasty and cheaper than most places ($4 for 6).

    3. I got the spicy sweet potato roll and holy F__K it was sooooooo good. And also priced really well-they are larger than normal maki and there were 5 for $4.95.

    4. My friends ordered the avocado tempura and were nice enough to share. I am all about tempura and this was soooo creamy and smooth I thought I had gone to heaven.

The"alrights" were the chicken kebab thing we got from the appetizers section(I don't remember the specific name). Not bad, just not anything special. And the tempura banana for dessert. I had always wanted to try this somewhere and convinced my boyfriend we needed it. He didn't like it at all (I am starting to think he hates tempura) and I was so-so on it. I'm sure if you have had it before and liked it that this would be the same, it just wasn't my thing, I suppose.

Overall? This is my new fav sushi spot based on the price AND those sweet potatoe rolls. I wish I had more right now....mmmmmMMMMMmmm.....

Very cozy intimate atmosphere with wonderful warm lighting.  Background music was a radio station though... I'd personally play something more suiting to the japanese decor (this would have given it a 5 star).
The food was amazing.  Fresh sushi and great rice bowls.  Good beverage selection with some favorites from Japan.
The staff are super friendly and willing to help with menu selection.  I LOVE it when the staff knows what they are serving.

Fujiyama is a spot I came across purely by referral. It was a birthday celebration with some besties, and we'd opted for a cosy evening of drinks and take-out sushi. For me, it was lands of the unknown... I have my top-spots on mental file. Alas...  how could I refuse such rave reviews from the people I care about? I could not.  And with an oversized order to share amongst friends, this sushi experience was to become a clear sample sesh. Oh ya.

I am a fan! Delicious, hearty, and top notch bites. Veggie, salmon, shrimp, and sweet potato heaven-- and hearts go out to the divine seaweed salad. I've heard great things about the actual resto as well... such cave-like descriptions fare well with me! (Atmospheric effect, my friends.)

Glad to have broadened my horizons with this Bloor Street bizz. Clustered exteriors make it easy to pass by, but give this guy another look-- its a menu worth exploring.

Great sushi, friendly service and a wonderful cave-like, cozy atmosphere. I have only been here once however I cannot wait to return. Eat here for lunch and they have specials, including 2 rolls for $8 and 3 for $11!, both specials come with miso soup or salad.  I was pleasently surprized by the quality of the sushi since the lunch prices were so low compared to other places I've been to in Halifax.
