I've found some imported Japanese soda's and bottled teas that have no sugar.
Be sure to read the labels carefully. Japanese foods have lots of sugars in them.
Try to come here on December 31'st and you'll see the mayhem that strikes when everyone is trying to get their stuff for the traditional Japanese New Years Day Meals.
Unlike other stores that sell Japanese goods, Fujiya has a few of their own imports that make this unique over the rest.Listed in: Healthier Food options, Japanese Food. What it Means…

Fujiya is my go to Japanese grocery store. They have dry foods, pre-made foods, fish and small vegetable items.
When I'm not in the mood to cook dinner, I know I'll be able to find something quick. They have pre-made sushi and bento boxes all ready to go. If I want to be able to cook dinner in under 15 minutes, I just grab some of their marinated black cod. The parking lot has never been full when I go so I'm in and out in 10 minutes tops.
*One thing to keep in mind. If you're purchasing sushi near the end of the night, the rice might be hard depending how long that sushi roll has been sitting there. -
Review from Kathy W.
Japanese market with tons of packaged sushi perfect for lunch. The sushi rolls are made fresh everyday prior to the lunch rush. The sushi isn't super good but it's decent for the price and the convenience. Also sell hot food and Japanese snacks. For those visiting from the States they also take USD but it's at a bad rate. There is some seating available at the front of the store.
Downside is mainly the parking. Tight spaces and just lots of traffic since it's located near an industrial part of town.
Overall, great place for those nearby to grab lunch without having to pay too much or waiting in line. The workers also seem sanitary and friendly. -
Review from Ramon V.
I love having days off. It means that I can cruise around and visit all my favourite spots for lunch, groceries, and other food-related errands.
Fujiya is a great spot for several reasons. Their packages of sushi make for a great lunch, or a to go order. I can't believe how cheap it is.
A 9-piece california roll is only 2.95. The rest of the rolls are all large and very well priced, and cover a wide variety. Try the cajun dynamite rolls. I love stopping in for a 2-pack of tuna cones for a to-go treat.
Their fresh seafood and Japanese salad deli counter is hard to beat.
Miso marinated black cod, ling cod, fresh salmon, sunomono, sesame green beans, octopus, sushi grade tuna, tofu, pork cutlets (which they'll deep fry for you), and lots of others . Put a few things together and you've got yourself an incredible dinner at a fraction of the price of a restaurant. This is also a great place to buy Japanese snacks such as seaweed, edamame and Pocky. Free parking and service with a smile comes standard.Listed in: Yelp's 30-day Challenge

Great sushi for a grocery store. I have shopped here many times for sushi and like the convenience at the price.

Review from Dru C.
A typical Japanese grocery store, but not up to my standards for food variety and quality. I do enjoy that they have a small section for Food take out and eat in area, and it is at a better price than most places, but the place is kinda in the middle of no where, so I wouldn't come here unless I am driving towards downtown, or in that area...
I can say their quantity of food is just too much for me to handle. I can be filled up with one order of California Rolls already, or maybe their Yam Tampura rolls. It was just TOO MUCH. The only bad thing about this store that it is so Americanized for those who don't realize it... The size of their food portions are huge and the saucing on each bento box is just too much. It is a grocery store, but fewer here and there would give them just an addition plus for me.
I can say I will come here if I just need food on the go and at one of the cheapest price as well. Fresh, delicious and fast. -

Backstory: My totally awesome sister introduced my family to Fujiya when I was in the fifth grade, around 1996. To our generation, Japanese pop culture at that time was a burgeoning goliath, with the popularity of Sailor Moon, Sanrio characters, and maximum Kawaii-ness climbing steadily. In her search for cool stuff, Mia tracked down Fujiya and our dad drove us all there to blow our allowances on renting VHS tapes of Sailor Stars (the next installment of Sailor Moon stuff...it gets complicated!) that were all in Japanese. We didn't understand what they were saying, but that was never important.
Today, it is 14 or so years later, Fujiya is still going strong, I now work at a place within reasonable walking distance, and am now getting into the routine of hopping off the bus early, grabbing some sushi, gyoza or donburi, and scampering the remainder of the way to the restaurant, while eating.
Forget allowances, my paycheque is for playing with yuzu, ponzu, and Pocari Sweat now, to feel like a kid in a candy store all over again. This is where I go to pick up wasabi paste, soba noodles, ramen, cartoon candies, and selected produce (napa cabbage and daikon radish for making kimchi). In addition to all of this, their sushi, take-out food, and meat/seafood counter (deep-frying services available until 6 PM!), you can also find housewares, Japanese cookbooks, bread, cakes, rental DVDs, and a large shelf of Pocky.
My workplace had a staff party with sushi not too long ago, and I showed up with a bag full of hilarious treats, which made a random and most-enjoyed bowl of "party mix". The Cream Collon was a hit.

Note that the prepared food/sushi section gets busy during lunch, as their sushi is inexpensive and of good quality (Fujiya is the home of a generous $2.95 California roll!), and the curry (beef, carrots, onion, potato, on sushi rice, probably made with Glico) is goooood. I ran in on Tuesday around 2:45, hoping to snag some curry, and they were out, so turned to the Cali rolls, and a fellow hungry shopper had just snatched up the last three trays. If only I had some major Astro-Boy powers...the hair is a start.
Prices are affordable, and the staff are friendly. The opportunity to giggle at Engrish packaging and cartoon characters decorating the checkout tills are a bonus. I'm very lucky to have a man-friend who also thinks that things are automatically cooler if they come from Japan. Sugoi!!Listed in: East Van, Yo!, House of Flying Daggers

I don't shop here for grocery items often, but it's reassuring to know that if I was ever whipping up a Japanese feast and missing that one essential ingredient, I would know where to go. I can't complain about the location because it's only a short bus ride away for me : )
Otherwise, Fujiya is a great stop for a quick, comprehensive, grab and go lunch. Sushi, bento boxes, deli items like seaweed salad and fish cakes, snacks, and beverages are all plentiful. Quality is good and prices are reasonable.Listed in: Cheap and Cheerful

Though they don't have the grocery selection of T&T or H-mart, they are the best place in town to pick up reasonably priced, premade bento boxes. For $5.95 you get a full meal - protein (anything from marinated black cod to tonkatsu to breaded hamburger), rice, and sides (sometimes potato salad, sometimes pasta salad, tea egg, veggies, or cabbage and fishcake salad). I usually don't get the sushi because all premade sushi seems to suffer from a decline in the rice quality. The hand rolls are probably the best choice out of the sushi cooler. The seaweed is separated from the rice and fish and you roll it yourself just before you eat it so the seaweed doesn't go soggy from the moisture in the filling. I also tend to treat myself to something unusual from their deli section, most recently a dish of Japanese pumpkin that my son really enjoyed.

As everyone else has mentioned this place is a great small Japanese grocery store. I prefer it over H Mart and it has way better pre-made food.
One thing no one has mentioned is they have a simple, tasty, and ultra cheap japanese beef curry. It's literally more food than I can eat for $4.50 and it's HOT and ready to go. Unlike their other packaged food the curry is kept fresh and toasty hot all day. Make sure to ask someone behind the sushi counter as it's not clearly advertised. -

I love their black cod in miso ! You have to try it :D
Go to their foods section, and ask them to wrap a piece of two up for you - take it home & broil in your oven - ah perfection!
They have nice selection of sushi/bentos that are so much more fresh than typical grocery/take out places ... As with all Japanese products, they are tad bit pricey but the black cod is just worth every penny
It is kind of in a random place.. and you can tell that the insides have not been renovated in a while ... and it is kind of small
Would've given it 3 stars if it weren't for the black cod in miso! :) -

For pre-made take out sushi this place is great. It's convenient and their prices are really good as well. They make all the sushi fresh daily and it's pretty steady throughout the day so the food doesn't sit there long. It's always pretty busy after work (especially Friday).

I wish they will put a Fujiya up at SFU mountain....god knows we need one there! Fujiya's food is so yummy and best of all affordable! They have a larger selection of sushi, bento boxes, and miscellaneous grab-n-go snacks too. They also sell a lot of imported Japanese goods. Fujiya is usually the first place I run to when I have that urge to make traditional Japanese dishes. I believe this is their largest store...the one in Richmond is quite small. Every one who works at Fujiya, for the most part, are really friendly :)
Hope you like them too! -

This is a great place to shop for Japanese items. I really like their sushi plates which are reasonably priced and make for a decent meal at home. They also sell marinated fish (miso glazed Black cod was my favorite) Another item I really enjoyed was the takoyaki. They do carry a good variety of Japanese items and in my opinion they have a much wider variety than T&T. Good place to get those hard to find Japanese items.

I love this place even though it is possibly in the WORST location ever.
I hat the highway-esque feel of this area right beside the most walkable area- the Drive- but I brave the street to find those awesome Japanese treats and sushi items @ cost.
You can probably get all this stuff at your regular grocer now that Japanese items are so popular and- heck there's even an "asian" aisle now in most grocery stores.
But there's something nice about coming to stores like Fujiya and walking around the aisles to read the ridiculous savoury treats that they call dessert. {you know what I'm talkin' about if you're asian}
Great for everyday shopping or a snack if you're in the neighbourhood. by no means go out of your way for this place though. -

If I'm in the area and want some quick sushi or a pre-made teriyaki meal, I stop here. Have also made the long trek out when I'm in need of some Japanese flavours (miso, for instance, of which they have a large variety.) One can also spend an inordinate amount of time in the snack food/sweets section, Japan makes some really tasty sweets.
It's small, but does its focus quite well. This is the place to visit for everything Japanese. -

A bigger sunomono salad than I have ever seen at a restaurant and a shrimp california roll filled me up for lunch while I decided upon a smorgasbord of udon, soba and ramen noodles for my cupboards and freezer... yes freezer, they have fresh frozen soba noodles!
Love that there's parking in the back and just how much stuff they have. I think I could use a translator to help me navigate through the many different types of products without English descriptions. At least Pocky is Pocky no matter where you are! Three stars because there's no organic tofu and that, I just can't live without! -

I do a fair amount of Japanese cooking and this is pretty much the go-to place for ingredients that you mightn't otherwise find in even some of the larger Asian supermarkets: konbu, yamaimo, rice sprinkles, koji, mirin, daikon, natto, shiso leaf, tsukemono, nori, mochi, niboshi, frozen takoyaki, honkin-big Japanese style negi .. you get the idea.
They also have a good selection of Japanese snacks and condiments, miso and tofu and a 'deli' section with gomae and assorted salads, fish cakes and croquettes.
In my opinion - this is about as good a selection as you are going to get in this city, probably the country..
As far as the sushi - great value, great selection - super tasty and prepared daily.. of course, sushi's best when it's done fresh - so depending on when that day they made YOUR sushi, results may vary - but for prepared sushi, Fujiya's best.. much better than the T&T. -

Quickest way to have a party on Friday night for 25 people? Order sushi trays to go! best part was being able to order online and have someone else pick it up for me (they just need the order #) as it was already paid for. $17 or so for a veggie sushi tray that was STUFFED with rolls - and was really tasty! I think we'll be having another sushi party again!

If I had to think of a place that I could get fixings for a quick, delicious dinner Fujiya Japanese Foods instantly comes to mind. From the 'deli' section you can get everything you need. They have reliably fresh fish either plain or marinated, pre-made salads, fish cakes, and tempura. Basically a selection of items you can simply bring home and heat up as the prep work is all done for you. I must say I love their black cod marinated or not. Sometimes I hit the other side of the counter and pick up some reasonably priced sushi, maki rolls, miso, salad or curry.
Although the prices for fresh food have gone up a little over the years I figure they have also gone up everywhere else. The only difference is that the quality and portion size has remained the same. As for the packaged food goods they are a little more expensive than a larger store like T&T, so I just buy what I need. As the frozen veggie gyoza's they sell are the best I have ever had I consider these a need.
It also doesn't hurt that they have free parking. Happy Shopping! -
Review from Roanna Z.
My cousin told us about Fujiya when we moved to the east side. She squealed the name out with delight and since then I always meant to get in there. Today was finally the day!
They sent me in with 20 dollars and said to get what ever I thought would be enough for the few of us.
This is a Japanese grocery store mostly but with a lot of take out sushi options and a few seats in the front.
I filled a bag and spent every generous cent on California rolls and Nigari. Rice noodle salad with vegetables too. It was tasty and fresh. Man, I love Nigari.
We had a picnic in the living room at my aunts with the fireplace on while the rain came down outside.
I know that I'll be returning to Fujiya regularly now that I have broken the ice. -

Not sure how I avoided reviewing Fujiya in all this time - the Fujiya on Clark & Venables is the main store for the outfit which specializes in Japanese food and products.
The main draw of this place is the inexpensive, fresh and tasty premade takeout nigiri/sushi - as low as $2.95 for a California roll and there's more 'exotic' items like spider (soft-shell crab) rolls and cajun chicken rolls. The selection is huge. The large Bento boxes (takeout lunch kits) are only ~$6. This place has the best pre-made takeout sushi and is often larger and better than takeout from your typical sushi joint in Vancouver. There's a small seating area in the front if you choose to eat cafeteria-style. They also offer catering.
There's also a tiny section for Japanese VHS rentals (really? VHS?!?) and magazines. But the other draw is the grocery store and the small butcher counter which pretty much has every Japanese ingredient you desire. This is where your wallet can suffer some serious damage. Some items are very reasonably priced (i.e. $2 for items like candies, drinks and seaweed), but you'll end up hating yourself for dropping $4.50 on a small bottle of imported Japanese milk coffee that are about $1.50 each in Japan or $7 on a bottle of okonomiyaki sauce. Oh well, it's expensive to import stuff and they definitely don't move the units like a large supermarket chain does.
There's few other places to go for hard-to-find Japanese items. It's a contrast of bargain takeout sushi/bento boxes and pricey Japanese imports in the grocery section.Listed in: East Van Eateries

Japanese grocery store with sushi, made fresh everyday. Perfect for parties or take out.
I always feel like a kid in a candy store when I go to Fujiya. Their products are inspiring and there is always something new or cute in store.
Their sushi is probably one of the best take-outs in town, highly recommended from a dedicated sushi fan. -

Fresh sushi grocery store style.
If I still rode my bike to work, i'd ride my little butt down the Adanac hill and grab myself a number of the delicious pre-made sushi packs and then sit and eat at their little tables by the door, or take it back up the hill with me *huff puff* and chill in my office enjoying delicious inexpensive sushi EVERYDAY for lunch.Listed in: Sushi Yum

Whenever we're in East Van, stopping in at Fujiya is pretty much a must. My husband has become addicted to the shrimp tempura rolls and a bottle of CC Lemon pop, while I am all about a spicy chicken karaage bowl and peach Calpis. (hehehe.) The sushi is great - it comes in all varieties, but I like mine simple and authentic, fish on rice with wasabi, no fancy California rolls or suchlike. Fujiya uses good fish, and they aren't skimpy with it.
The take-out is only half the story. This Fujiya has everything needed to put together an authentic Japanese meal at home (including cookbooks), including fish and special produce, like daikon. It's mostly imported, but all items have an English label on them. If you can't read the instructions on the package, you can at least identify what it is. The prices are very good too. Even on my craziest stocking up trips to Fujiya for wasabi, soba, kimchi, and instant yakisoba, plus impulse snacks (mmm nori crackers), I can usually get out of there for under $60. -

One day I will buy Fujiya and do what Shig Hirai hasn't done and grow it beyond what it is.
Chelsea S. mentions the quality - the quality is as good or better than 90% of the sushi places in Van. Vancouver has become littered with so many mediocre sushi places, that now everyone thinks they're some sort of expert critic. Fujiya quality is just fine.
The prices sure have gone up a bit. And usually I stick to what I stick to. I think they can make more everyday, and at a certain time before closing mark everything down. That is how it's done in Japan, and I think it would fly well here too.
The pre-prepared food around the corner from the bentos is awesome. It's what I grew up with as a kid with a Japanese mom. Great mackerel with ginger, kinpira gobo, etc. I love it all.
PLUS they sell fresh made katsu. You can buy it raw, or have them deep fry it for you on the spot. It'll take 10 minutes but it's worth it. Combine it with their $4.50 curry and you have instant katsu curry.
The market is a little on the expensive side for things, but that stuff is all about volume. If they had some larger stores it would be cheaper - obviously.
I still think there is substantial room for Fujiya to grow in this market - even with T & T around. Uwajimaya has done well south of the line with larger locations. -

I think one of the largest J market in town. Used to go to the old Powell St store in Jtown back in the days. This place is way way bigger and offers a large selection of bento lunches and sushi. Katsudon box for $6' ish - lots o lots of rice... small piece of pork with a pack of sauce, potato salad, and yummy preserved veggies - a venti frap probably costs that much.
Market also sells loads of other stuff including fresh veggies, sashimi-grade fishies, and other stuff like green tea, matcha, Pocky, curry, blah blah blah
Store parking lot in the back - picked up Bento boxes today around 1030 hr... avoided the rush -

The Main Fujiya on Clark is one of my regular spots for specialist groceries. If you need Japanese ingredients, it's generally cheaper than most other Asian supermarkets and probably the best selection.
Weekends are very busy and if you go later on in the day, they may be out of fresh items like daikon and other fresh produce. So get there early for the best selection.
The highlight is the take out sushi and lunch items - Excellent price and made throughout the day. The negitoro sushi and karaage chicken are my favourites. There is also a deli counter where I discovered the satsuma-age, a tasty Japanese version of the kefilta fish. It's a fairly economical way to try out something new if you're not familiar with Japanese dishes (less risky than the restaurant). -

Overrated because it's basically the only J-grocery store in town. It's in a pain-in-the-butt area to get to, if you live downtown. It's overpriced and nothing like, say, a Tokyu or Odakyu OX supermarket in Japan. Not that I expect that here but I'd sooner go to T&T or H-Mart even also overpriced Konbiniya.
I guess if you can't find what you want at the aforementioned three plces, sure go to Fujiya but I wouldn't go out of my way to shop there. -

The miso soup is surprisingly good with egg skin.. and I'm picky about my miso soup.
Also tried the hot curry, and the beef leaves a lot to be desired. Great taste but too chewy. Their daily sushi selection still fills my happy belly.1 Previous Review:

I don't buy too many Japanese groceries (soy sauce, rice and occasionally miso), so I don't have much to say as far as the "market" part of Fujiya. My comments are about the food to-go.
I work nearby, so I've probably had Fujiya sushi (etc.) 50 times or so in the last two years. I used to like it more than I do now. Admittedly, probably part of the problem is that I've had it too much.
But, also -
1) Most of the prices have gone up. I understand that there are some significant costs associated with the packaging, etc. but it's no longer a really great deal to have sushi from here. The sushi was never "great", but at least it used to be cheap.
2) The quality is pretty mediocre. Yep, it seems to be quite fresh, and yep, there is pretty good selection...but I will take good value and good quality over large selection any day of the week.
Things I still like: the miso soup is decent, and I still think the chicken karaage is the second best "snack" in the neighborhood (samosas from Sweet Cherubim taking the top spot). -

Sushi is good, not awesome but ... very good.
Lots of other stuff too including meats and other traditional super market items (for Japan I guess.. :)

Great prices on take out stuff
$2 to $4 range for most sushi rolls or other bento box items -

When your kids are having a birthday party and you need to order a whack of sushi this is the best deal in town! Their party platters are really good value and everything is fresh. If you order in time through their catering line they'll deliver free if over $100. You can also arrange your pickup at their downtown location if it's more convenient for you. They're website is super easy to order from. Kampai!

There are a few Fujiya stores in the Vancouver area, but this is the main location. In addition to being a great place to pick up sushi and bento boxes, Fujiya is also a good place for Japanese groceries. They've got lots of snack items, seasonings, a good supply of frozen fish and fresh produce like diakon. With Uprising Breads and La Casa Gelato just down the road from Fujiya, I want to move into the neighbourhood!

Why have I never thought of doing this I dunno? Today I stopped in after work and initial intention was just to browse for some Japanese snacks but I found stuff to make dinner with...picked up 3 pieces of miso marinated fresh sablefish (they call it gindara) and it was sooo good, 3 pieces came to only $12 and with a side of sesame green beans, my dinner for 2 plus one lunch for tomorrow came to $15 and it was sablefish dammit, the kind you'd pay $20 a piece at say Coast or Glowbal. The sablefish turned out buttery soft and the nice lady behind the counter gave me a tip to wipe off excess miso before baking or they'll burn and great tip, thanks little lady behind the counter. I wish I took a picture of the end product but we ate it up before they announced who got eliminated off American Idol. Highly recommended and oh yah, they have all these cooked bento boxes or rice bowls for takeout and nothing over $8, craziness or wut?!

small cozy place. super market + small food stand. I can't really put a label on it. Food is great. everything is fresh. you can eat the food right there, although more tables could make the place better. there is always a queue, maybe an indication of how good the place is.
