I've only been here once and a ridiculously cold day (not an Edmonton native so feel free to mock me, but -30 C is just crazy).

Friends and Neighbors Cafe has homey feeling menu offering which made me laugh.  I was handed a menu with some fairly traditional North American breakfast fare, with witty names and a second menu that was a combination of items from a variety of Asian cuisines.   Interesting.

I ended up with a breakfast plate called the French Concoction (get it?  - see "witty" reference above).  I thought it tasted great.  Fresh french bread and eggs cooked just right over a decent tasting piece of ham.  One thing I noted was that the eggs were a little pale colored and not quite as flavorful as I expected.  May have just been a lame batch though.

To top it off, I had a pretty good latte.

You can also catch some of the latest Vietnamese soap-operas from the kitchen if you sit near the back... ...I mean, if you like Viet soap-operas.

Over the course of our four years living near Whyte Ave, my wife and I have probably spent more of our income here than any other eatery in the area. Is it the food the best we've come across? No. Is the service unparalleled? Not necessarily. Is it the cheapest breakfast/meal you can get? Not quite.

It's the little things that make Friends and Neighbours worth visiting on multiple occasions. If the kitschy, campy decor, the lime green vinyl booths, the never-ending and consistently good coffee, the local, family-owned feel, and the delicious asparagus and Swiss cheese omelette aren't a draw for you, then you may want to look elsewhere for your Saturday morning fare. The price is very reasonable, the food (particularly the breakfast menu) is definitely above-par, and the wait staff are kind, courteous and always nearby with a refill.

I had brunch here for the first time yesterday after pondering on going to this place for a long time. The exterior is kind of cluttered and sketchy looking and once you get inside it smells a little unappetizing -- two things that prevented me from going here for a while.

The first thing I had to do when I got inside was go to the bathroom... man, the bathrooms are cramped! But they're cramped in a cozy kind of way, and remind me of some old farmhouse or something. The bathrooms also smell better than the rest of the place, which is odd.

Being a picky eater, I definitely appreciated the menu. Or menus, I should say. They had several, and the list of options was extensive. The food ended up being pretty good. Actually, better than most of the other breakfast/brunch places on that end of Whyte Ave. Still akin to stuff I could make at home, but at least they did a good job and weren't too expensive.

With a group I'd definitely go back, but by myself I might opt for staying home and making my own breakfast, mainly for cost reasons.

I am a pretty loyal fan of Friends and Neighbors because I feel that this place could have so much potential, considering the all-day breakfast option, friendly staff, and cozy atmosphere. My mom and I would go in here for our routine "dinner out" and I have to admit, sometimes the food just wasn't doing it for me. There's a large variety of food to choose from, but the breakfast menu is usally the best choice (oh and the Vietnamese iced coffee is really good...). There was a time when my mom and I didn't feel like going into Friends and Neighbors but decided to after a few months. The owner was there and she was so happy to see us. It's nice to be recognized as being a regular customer for sure..and she gave my mom a half of a pomegranate when she paid for some reason lol.

So I would technically rate the food 3/5, but the service is definently 5/5.

I've got to add, to my original review that this place reminds me a bit of the kind of place where Seinfeld and the gang would hang out and discuss the day's no-stories.

I was also a tad disappointed with the brown bread they used.  It was really very ordinary!  Am I too spoilt?  Perhaps.  But all in all, I still love to go here for a meal every now and then.

Vintage charm (i.e., the somewhat garish hues of the late '70s) and small town feel characterize Friends & Neighbours Cafe. Excellent omelettes and some of the best cinnamon buns in the city. It isn't gourmet or inventive, but the food is hearty and honest. Makes me want to find my stirrup pants and listen to some Journey.

Yup, this is one of the places for brunch on Whyte Avenue.  I remember when it was Uncle Albert's on 104 or no where, but that location is long lost to fire.

Friends and Neighbours is exactly that.  A good place to get together with Fs and Ns.  I go for breakfast on weekends and you get exactly what you order, a big breakfast from a flat top at a good price.  It's not overdone like a Denny's.  It's solid diner food with strong coffee.  More than that, it's independent and an old neighbourhood joint.

It's not big, so expect to wait if you come prime time.  It's a particularly great if all you feel like is to pull on some sweats and get a full tummy.

The place is very comfortable for a lazy Saturday morning brunch.

The coffee cups get refilled regularly. Bison sausage is a bit dry but the other sausages are quite nice. Eggs benedict is also pretty good. Salmon and eggs is decent but I could have used a bit more goat cheese.

The eggs are not fried in butter for anyone with milk allergies.

Friends & Neighbors cafe is a comfortable place that a friend took me to on a Sunday morning. It was really great after a night out. The grease was needed.

I had the regular eggs & bacon and coffee. It wasn't the best but it hit the spot. The whole place has an old school feel to it and it was actually pretty cozy. We ended up dragging out our break fast for a few hours and just hashing out the events from the night before.

The service was good, fast and patient. They didn't mind us sitting around just chatting for hours. It was a good experience.

They don't have dive diners in E-town like they do in Toronto or Montreal. This is as close to a greasy spoon as I can find here, aside from Route 99. Friends & Neighbours serves up a cheap, fast eggs, bacon and toast with bottomless cups of coffee, so you can slowly but surely embrace the day after a night of excess. They have small, plastic booths here, like a '70s-style diner. And there's a fish tank in the back that is a bit pitiful to look at, and even more unappetizing while you're eating. The servers are very attentive, but they don't make you feel rushed. In fact, this is the kinda place that's great for extended conversations on a lazy Sunday afternoon, if it's too cold out on Whyte to stroll or to hit a patio. I wish this place was in my neighbourhood.
