This is a rare case where I actually agree with most of the reviewers. It's overpriced for sure, and the service can be spotty. I actually found my waiters very nice, but I was trying to stay and do some work so I wasn't in a rush. But they let me stay during a pretty busy time.

Gluten free sandwiches on bread that looks and smells so much like real bread I had to ask the waiter to make sure. Before I even finished asking he had answered me. They must get that a lot. They also have a gluten free Spanish beer called Daura Estrella Dam which I had never heard of before and is now my favorite GF beer.

The four stars are for the prices. I get the extra 2.50 for the gluten free bread, but to add that to an already 11 dollar sandwich that doesn't include fries is what keeps me from coming here more often. I think if I weren't gluten free, I would give this place three stars.

Service was just alright, relatively slow and not super nice. Location's quite small, like the other stalls at the market.

Food was just okay - i got matzoh ball soup and my friends got the fish tacos and burgers. Wasn't anything out of the ordinary, a bit pricey for the type of food. Would try something more unique.

The other day it was raining like crazy, so we decided to go shopping in the closest "mall" that we know of in Manhattan. The Chelsea Market is a cool place, but on the weekends it's busting at the seems with foreign tourists. So, if you don't enjoy your personal space & you love having people shove you without even acknowledging your existence, it's perfect for you.

But if you're hungry, theres tons of different eateries to try. On this day, I was super excited to try Friedman's because they can do gluten free substitutions.
We got to the restaurant at 2:40pm on Sunday and they told us they'd be switching to the lunch menu. But they didn't tell us this in a nice way, it was way more bitchy. I understand that they're tired of dealing with the constant tourists, but they chose their location, they should be nice.

They suggested we get takeout if we wanted to have brunch. So we did.

I got the chicken and cheese waffles (gluten-free). They were very good, but extremely greasy. My friend got the cheese grits & potato pancake.

The reason I gave them 3 stars was the attitude of the cashier and the greasiness of the food.

I just had a thoroughly enjoyable meal at Friedman's. There is a communal table at the front for solo diners, which is always a plus. (I'm one of those strange people who loves to eat out with a book). The jazz music in the background and general ambiance are inviting.

The menu finds a satisfying balance between comfort food (reubens, etc.) and options for more gourmet-leaning tastebuds. I was not in an adventurous mood, so I ordered a Chicken Adobo Salad, which was fresh, crispy, crunchy with a hint of spice.

Friedman's is also a good choice for happy hour. I enjoyed a delicious beer on tap for $4.

The service is friendly, efficient and professional.

I will definitely be back for happy hour/appetizers and weekend brunch.

Brunch with the boy before grocery shopping in Chelsea market.  I told you I'm semi domestic, regardless if someone else is doing the cooking.

It's small and can get sort of crowded and the service can be slow at times.  However, I think when you're craving comfort food, Friedman's hits the spot.  I usually get the mac & cheese which is creamy and rich or the grilled cheese with fries, I obviously love cheese.  Hey I need my diary to prevent osteoporosis when I get old.  The boy usually gets the burger which he likes.

Stop in if you live in the hood but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here.

While visiting the historic Chelsea Market, i decided to give this place a try. Am glad I did!! I was in and out for a quick meal. Ordered the House-made Veggie burger and it was delicious.

With spicy tomato fennel jam, avocado, alfalfa sprouts and herbed french fries The vegetable patty was super tasty. Loved the flavors in the burger. They were kind enough to substitute the bun with a whole wheat bread. I did not like the pickle too much. Not pickled enough. The french fries was hot and really crispy.

What i found really delicious was their tomato ketchup. It was not the regular branded ketchup. Was by Sir Kensington's Gourmet scooping ketchup! Great flavor. Had a slight tang to it. I paid $12+tip for the veggie burger. But it was great portion side with french fries and a pickle.

I'd love to go back and try a few other things on the menu.

Working inside Chelsea Market, Friedman's Lunch is a pretty decent option for lunch. Considering how much some of the salads cost, however, it's a little difficult to make this place a regular habit.

I really like their grilled salmon salad, which has a Greek flair served with gigante beans, olives, and cucumbers with a creamy dill dressing. But for $15, it's not quite that amazing. Same goes for the Asian chopped salad, which is essentially a pretty average Asian chicken salad with a very flavorful hoisin sesame dressing - that also costs a whopping $15.

I'd like to switch up my lunch routine with Friedman's more often... however I find that I am just as happy with a salad from Amy's or The Lobster Place for much less green.

With Celiac disease, it's not always easy to find something truly Gluten Free to eat. Upon reading the reviews, I was so thrilled that Friedman's Lunch offered so many GF options. When I got there and read their menu, I was tempted by their gluten free burger because I don't know any other place(s) that offer them.

Their GF burger an outstanding bun (when I first saw it, I wondered whether they had messed up my order and gave me a regular one!). It's thick and "fluffy" as a bun you are going to get for not using Gluten. The quality of the meat was excellent. Overall, this hit the spot as something to eat before a 3.5 hour train ride -- but didn't leave me feeling bloated of full (yay!). The reason for the 4 starts vs. the 5 was the 15 minute wait, but one must expect that with quality.

The dots next to the entries on the menu indicate which can be made gluten-free.  We got the chicken soup, the cobb salad and the brown rice bowl.  The chicken soup was pretty underwhelming, but the cobb salad was big and hearty and the brown rice bowl very satisfying, as long as you like eggplant.

The food is really atrocious.  You'd think being in the headquarters of the food network it might have some sort of standard, but nope; it was really, really bad.  One of the girls that actually works inside Chelsea Market described it as diner food, and that's spot on.  It's overpriced diner food (not the good kind).  I ordered the burger (of course) and it wasn't cooked properly, it definitely wasn't seasoned, and it was so tiny.  If you're going to charge $13 for a burger, you can make it slightly substantial.  Even the fries that came with my burger were totally depressing.  There is absolutely no quality control in terms of what's served.

I'm a big fan of Chelsea Market and the restaurants within.  Came here for brunch for a table of 4.  We had to wait about 30mins but the nice part of it all is that you can put your name down and walk around and get your grocery done.

4 stars for the Cheddar Grits, House Made Chicken Sausage and...BERRY PANCAKES!  The pancakes were just as good as Clinton St. Bakery.

Despite the fact that my waitress was a complete Airhead.... I asked for a club soda 3 times... which as we all know is water with bubbles that comes out of a machine not brain surgery lady... my dinner here the other night was good.

Friedman's specializes in comfort food. I'd had quite the stressful end to my week so comfort food was just what the doctor ordered. We didn't have to wait for a table, so that was an added bonus. Between FFF and I we split a lot of things. I really liked the spinach salad (apples, candid walnuts, gorgonzola cheese). The pork belly lettuce wraps I wanted to like... but the cut of pork belly was a little too thick for my liking. We also split short ribs and the fried chicken. The short ribs were good, but I've certainly had better. The chicken was OK, but pretty greasy. My favorite things on the menu were the mac and cheese that came with the chicken and the rosemary seasoned fries.

The place is cute and right in the heart of Chelsea Market. I'm not sure I'd come back again just for fattening sides and a salad, but the price wasn't bad so maybe if I happened to be walking through the market and not in the mood for sweets at Amy's Bread...

I never did get that club soda.

The fried chicken and cheddar waffles are one the best gluten free foods I have ever had!!! They were insane!! The pancakes were excellent too, but did not compare to the chicken and waffles.  The wait can be long and they don't take reservations for brunch.  But, they ARE worth the wait!!

Brought my BFF VQL to the highline to check out the park everyone is envying in all the guidebooks.  Grabbed lunch at Friedman's Lunch...NOT the same as Freemans as in the Ally!  But every bit as good.  WE both got slamming take out lunch.  VQL had an amazing bacon grilled cheese and a cup o tomato soup...i had the fish tacos (made with turbot that day) and also a cup o tomato soup.  The grilled cheese was crispy and dense with flavor from the cheese, bacon and butter it was grilled with.  The soup was like a "stoup" as rachel ray would say...thick enough that you could stick a fork in it and it would remain upright...slightly sweet and bursting w/ tons of tomato taste...perfect on that sunny but blustry day all those meters above the chelsea chaos below.  My fish tacos, while spicy, totally hit the spot...dare i say better than La Esquina or Dorado?  yes, Maaaaybe!  while it took a bit of time to get the food, it was totally fresh and worth it!  at highline and hungry, take a tirip...skip the lobsters at lobster place...you know what that'll taste like...if not put a rubber band in your mouth and chew.

I guess I just ordered the wrong dish but I would like to believe if it is truly a great restaurant, everything on the menu has to stand out. Unfortunately, the brown rice bowl did not.

You could say I am spoiled when it comes to inexpensive Asian food. The rice bowl is $11 and to add any sort of protein, you have to pay a significant extra. I paid $3 for grilled tofu. The bowl came with some edamame, spring sprouts, carrots, and mushroom. It seems quite healthy and the sauteed vegetable isn't bad. It is just bad I cannot justify a bowl of brown rice and sauteed vegetable costs me $11. It is also kind of bland I had to steal Lobster Place's Hot Sauce to make my food from next door a little more appealing.

I guess I should have tried their fried chicken or sandwiches.

Eat more Brunch!  That is my new years resolution. The menu is awesome so you will have a hard time narrowing down your choice, but good thing the wait is long ;). We started off with mimosas, sides of white cheddar grits and a potato pancake. I choose the short rib hash which was off the hook!  It was poached eggs over a hash of sweet potatoes, caramelized onions, and short ribs....mmmmmmmm!  My fiancé had the breakfast pizza which was awesome as well!

Make it a trip to come check out Chelsea Market and stop for brunch or any meal!

Friedman's SHOULD NOT CLAIM TO BE GLUTEN FREE! Celiac's, don't trust them!

I don't even know where to begin. Friedman's used to be such an amazing place for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. It pains me to see what has happened to it since it has come under new management. They have sent me the wrong order countless times (I specified gluten free and they have sent me plates filled with gluten). To make matters worse, the staff there is incredibly rude. The many times they have messed up my order, they have never apologized until it gets to the manager level.

If you are a celiac, you know how hard it is to find gluten free food. Don't get your hopes up with this place. I'd rather take my chances somewhere that i have to explain my disease, rather than put my trust in these people only to have them serve me gluten time and time again.

I went to Friedman's Lunch for lunch with a friend, a large instrument and an infant. Not usually a winning combination for Chelsea market... We were greeted with a smile and they had a table that was almost made for us - phew. Our most accommodating waiter was super helpful - even pulling out the stroller when one of us needed to get up and making winning suggestions for the food. The BLAT w/chicken on sourdough was good (not fabulous), but the quinoa side was fabulous, the fries well done and tasty, the pickles perfectly half sour and the grilled cheese and tomato soup combo a total hit.
I too had a Guilt City buy one get one free and the waiter was helpful in making sure we got everything we wanted. Even offering stuff to go when we didn't want it in house. Overall, food was tasty and service was great!

The food there is actually legit, however, if your experience of the food is ruined by everything around you, it is not actually worth it.

The staff could not be more obnoxious, especially at the takeout counter. The food is insanely overpriced for what it is, and you have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for it.

So, if you are completely oblivious to human interaction, and have money and time, this is the place for you! But if you're not those things, I would go anywhere in or near the market and enjoy all New York city has to offer, including impeccable service.

I've been here a few times.  The food is pretty good and it's a go-to spot whenever I visit Chelsea Market with gluten-free eaters.  It's nice, but I always leave feeling like it's not as good as I remember from the last time.

The biscuit here is great and the pastrami ruben is pretty delicious.  Once I got the fried green tomatoes, which were turning red (I don't know if it changed the taste at all, they seemed fine but not amazing).  The eggs and potato pancake taste good, but you can tell how bad you're going to feel later when you start eating them.

True to form, every time I've eaten here I start feeling it about 2/3 of the way through the meal.  By the end I feel full, but up in my chest rather than in my stomach.  It's pretty strange, and I only get it here.

The food is pretty good, but this feeling dampens my interest.  Plus the service is always somewhat slow even though they're always busy for brunch and have people waiting in line to get in.  I don' t know if there are options nearby I'd like better, I keep forgetting about that heartburn-esque situation and agree to go back.  Maybe next time I'll try something else to compare it to.

The first experience at Friedman's Lunch was great especially since the Chelsea Market is immaculately curated.  I had the Matzoh Ball soup which was perfect for the cold outside and an uninspiring rice bowl. Not a big fan of ordering and getting something you can probably whip up at home (kitchen sink in a bowl). The hamburger was good and the lettuce wrap even better.

I'll make my complaint sweet and short. Went in, waiter pushed us to order and eat - waiter breathing down our necks to basically eat, pay and get the f*ck out. In a perfect world... we would have eaten, prayed, and loved.... but not at Friedmans Lunch.

Friedman's is just one more awesome reason why "I heart brunch."

I was very, very tempted to order the chicken and waffles - but I don't really eat things fried so instead ordered the Southern Breakfast.  OMG - although the chicken and waffles that walked by looked oh so good - my taste buds were so happy with my order.  It's actually a relatively simple plate - two eggs any style, a biscuit, fried green tomatoes (yes, I know, I don't eat fried foods), and cheddar grits.  The cheddar grits stole the stage and I have difficulty not craving them all the time!  The best thing about Friedman's is the quality of everything that came to our table.

Looking forward to going back :).

I stopped in for lunch and had a salad. I wanna like this place but the salad I ordered was wrong and the service was a little slow.

I ordered the Adobo Chicken salad, It sounds good on paper but how it was served to me was strange.

They break the salad into sections:

    Black bean section
    Cheese section
    Bacon section
    Chicken section
    with greens in the middle

Lotsa bacon and cheese, all clumped together? I felt off after lunch..

I would give this 4 stars if it wasn't for the crazy prices on the menu.  I totally get that it's one of the nicer sit down places in Chelsea Market, but I have no business spending 14.50 on a salad, even if said salad is f***ing amazing.

    Absolutely amazing.

The wait was the only downside. We arrived around 1pm and my party  of 5 wasn't seated until about 1:50pm. However, it was completely worth the wait!

My mother and I eat gluten-free, so we tried the fried chicken and cheddar waffles AND the gluten free pancakes. You can pass on the pancakes, but the chick and waffles were AMAZING. Absolutely perfect. Crispy skin and moist chicken with waffles that were just a hint cheddar-y.

The cheesy grits you can pass on, but the eggs Benedict and smoked salmon plate were pretty large and also extremely amazing. We didn't have those in the gluten free option, so I'm not sure how great their bagels are.

Also a hint-- they use Udi's gluten free bread-- not homemade. So I'd definitely suggest the waffles!

The food is great but I warn you about the delivery. It takes FOREVER- way longer than they say it will. It has happened to me twice now where I haven't received my order (over 30 mins passed the time I was told) and then they can't find the order and give random times when it should arrive. I was even hung up on when I called. So be prepared if you are ordering a delivery.

I'm a fan of the one hardest things to cook in the world...turkey burgers.  Most turkey burgers taste like sawdust, except for Friedman's Southwest Turkey Burger.  That is, until recently.  I haven't had a TB in a month or two so I stopped by Friedman's today and had my favorite local lunch item...and it was JUST ANOTHER TURKEY BURGER!  Dry, only taste was the spices, mealy texture...ick.

New chef?  New recipe?  Off day?  I'm not sure...so I will go back try again.

I visited Friedman's for lunch on Election Day, since I got the day off and wanted to see the most recent addition to the High Line nearby.

The place was hoppin' and pretty crowded, so I opted for takeout.  My order was taken with courtesy and care and my food was ready promptly.

I had the housemade veggie burger and fries.  Now, this was a pretty tasty veggie burger and definitely not your typical frozen patty thrown on the grill.  The burger was juicy, flavorful, and BIG.  I have a pretty hearty appetite and this thing was filling.  I like that it had avocado on it.  The garlicky rosemary potatoes were  scrumptious.

All in all a very nice experience food-wise and eating in the common area at Chelsea Market provided for interesting people watching as well.  Thumbs up!

My goodness this place is a clusterfuck during weekday lunch. I have been here twice. The food has been decent and service has been s-l-o-w.

Each time I have been here, I thought it would be a better idea to do a sit down lunch. My first time I was able to snag a two-top table all to myself, which was great for people watching. My second time I grabbed a seat at the long table towards the front of the restaurant. Let's just say when you come by yourself and you are at a long table, you feel a.) like the biggest loser ever and b.) like a creeper that is forced to eavesdrop on conversations. Needless to say, if you are by yourself, don't sit at the long table. Trust me, it's AWKWARD. Sort of feels like a scene from Mean Girls when they are in the high school cafeteria.

    Onto the food:
+ Grilled Cheese Sandwich: This sandwich is ok. Nothing spectacular. Gruyere and white cheddar with caramelized onions and bacon on ciabatta.
+ Brown Rice Bowl: This dish is much better than the grilled cheese. Also healthier. Edamame studded brown rice w/Japanese eggplant, bok choy, carrots, bean sprouts & sesame lime dressing. I ordered mine with tofu and  the quality of the tofu was not bad. Grilled?

    Onto the service:
+ You literally have to flag down the server to order your food and pay for the bill. Annoying.
+ Don't come here if you are in a rush.

    GLUTEN FREE DINERS:

I absolutely freaked out and wanted to dance an Irish jig in happiness over the gluten free chicken and waffles. Not only is this a cute brunch place in Chelsea Market, but they have such an extensive gluten free menu full of yummy things I miss. The fried chicken was incredibly moist and PERFECTLY seasoned. The cheddar waffle had a wonderful consistency and I actually had to double check with the waiter to make sure it was gluten free, because the waffle didn't have a gritty consistency that I'm used to with gluten free waffles! The spicy honey dipping sauce really sealed the deal, and now I crave spicy honey whenever I think of chicken...*mouth is watering*

'"Oops. This is Freidman's, not Freeman's." A friend recommended this place to me, mistakenly thinking it was the satellite location of the latter. We decided to try it anyway, prior to a walk on the Highline. People seem to love it, but I thought it was just okay. Some things to keep in mind:
    - The wait is long (likely because it's one of the few places where you can sit down and be served at Chelsea Market) and the servers are a bit crazed.
    - Not the place to count calories. I ordered the vegetable sandwich, which was decent, but I was still hungry and ended up drooling over the chicken and waffles at the table next to us. My boyfriend, on the other hand, loved his burger with caramelized onions and thick cut fries.
    - Try the seasonal beer (yes, even for brunch). It will go well with your meal and take a little edge off--much needed after maneuvering through the weekend crowds at CM.

Yea, I'm on a diet, but whatever.  As a New Yorker who wishes she was a Southern cook I just couldn't turn down the Southern breakfast and I'm SO glad I didn't.  For $11.50 you get 2 eggs, cheddar grits, fried green tomatoes, and a biscuit.  Southern breakfast was better than sex (well, not make-up sex).  I would recommend adding a side of sausage or bacon, I did not because of that whole "diet" thing but you definitely should).

Another reason I give Friedman's 5 stars is that our waitress was super nice.  My dad is what some would call "difficult" when it comes to ordering at restaurants - very sweet but very inquisitive.  He can't have butter, cream, salt, etc. because of his heart surgery and our waitress was very helpful in recommending what he could have and making sure that no extra salt was added.  He also likes to ask A LOT of questions about the menu and she was very patient.

I would definitely go back to Friedman's...and get the Southern Breakfast with sausage this time!

Their bowls are pretty good, a heaping piece of delicious salmon with brown rice and edamame. The service is kinda iffy though. Still keep going back though, convincing myself that those brown rice bowls are healthy, although they are probably loaded with butter!

Wow, can't believe the diversity of reviews here. From downright terrible to happy and content. After walking around the Chelsea Market late Sunday we dropped in here to have a late lunch / early dinner and our experience was a pleasant meal and time here. In fact, it was kinda terrific.

Only had to wait about five minutes for a table, and the overall service was very attentive and friendly. I did not have any of the bad waiter experiences others have reviewed here, and we were more then satisfied with our food choices.

I had a cup of the two bean turkey chili which was chunky and tasty, and the pulled pork sandwich which was slathered in papaya bbq sauce and pickled red onions on a brioche bun. Holy Oink! This was awesome. The pork was super moist and that bbq sauce was divine. The bun was soft and buttery. The sandwich was fat and did not skimp out. Just a perfect size for my appetite. Very tasty. Stacey ordered the Asian chopped salad - Napa cabbage, romaine, red peppers, carrots, scallions, cilantro, snowpeas, shredded chicken and wonton crisps with a hoisin peanut sauce. I kept eating off her plate as the dressing was terrific and the whole salad was very fresh. I was rewarded with bruised fingers from her stabbing me with her fork to keep out of her food! Two flavorful iced teas rounded out the meal.

Prices are not that bad here. In the low - moderate range. I also like that it has a cozy and homey type feel to it. Like a country kitchen type of place that serves up fresh comfort style food. Also has gluten free options. Will definitely stop in again to have lunch or brunch if in the area.

Got the southern breakfast and the fried chicken and waffle.
The food was definitely good and deserving four stars - the reason I'm only giving it three is the service and portion size.
We got two tiny pieces of chicken - a small wing and another nondescript piece of chicken, definitely not meriting the price of the dish (for comparison, red rooster's fried chicken is clearly superior, has pieces more than twice the size and only costs a dollar or two more).
When we commented on this to the waiter (when we could actually find one) we got a dismissive, discourteous reply. Eventually I think it was the cook that came by with another tiny wing as compensation.
I have seen people get that dish there with better results so it's possible this is a hit-and-miss dish.
As I've said before, the food itself is excellent - the grits in the southern breakfast were delicious, as well as the fried green tomatoes.

I would definitely consider going there again, even though Chelsea market is filled with other options, hopefully I'll have better luck next time.

This was my favorite restaurant while visiting New York. I loved that it was farm to table and my pastrami hash was one of the best things I've eaten in a while. I would order it every time. My friend had the chicken and waffles. The syrup had a bit of a kick. Was not expecting that when I tried a bite! It was a nice change to the normal chicken and waffles though.

If only they had a Friedman's Lunch on the west coast!

It was pretty busy though, even for a late lunch. It took 45 minutes to be seated and I could tell the hostess was a bit of a stress case.

3.5--everything is quite tasty but the price isn't right. I've had most of the soups, the burger, and the standard grilled chicken salad. That salad is comprised of nice, fresh ingredients I like, but 12.50 just seems a bit steep. I know it's all organic/Chelsea Market, but one can walk down to Ronnybrook for cheaper fare. I've never been to sit down, though, so I guess that distinguishes the experience from most others in the market.

P.E.I. mussels and flat bread with prosciutto and arugula, YUM.
    Happy hour prices, YEAH!
    Veggie burger, meh.

In summation, happy hour inside this warm enclave inside Chelsea's Market was superb. Half off appetizers - share with friends! But I've had better veggie burgers. It was a little too dry and bland despite the generous topping of avocado. That's the only reason why I can't hand out a fifth star.
