In my meandering adventures through downtown Vancouver I have run into the Fresh Local Wild food cart on several occasions. I'm always in a hurry, have missed them, or they are already closed for the day. After seeing their teaser on Diners, Drive In's, and Dives, I was in trouble. Like all of you I started to develop a twitch and serious craving for some Seafood Chowder poutine among other delicacies. Well today my friends! I was there in time to snag a Chicken Fried Oyster 'Po-Boy', but alas the poutine was sold out. (Take note : This stuff is so good they sell right out of it) So in the name of good research, I will have to hit them up again just for the poutine. Multiple times apparently, because I am a mushroom FANATIC and these guys have a Chanterelle Mushroom Poutine too.

Now if you're reading this post and thinking, "ew, Oysters!". Please put aside all of your negative memories brought on by previous oyster pitfalls. These are not the "salad bar in vegas" oysters, nor the "left out too long and have just sent your digestive tract to a very bad place" oysters. These are the oysters to be put on a pedestal of how to cook an oyster. Think fresh fresh fresh, just hauled out of the water for your culinary enjoyment.

My Sandwich arrived with a HEAPING mountain of fresh cut, flash fried, crispy as hell fries. The only thing missing was the chowda! Even without being doused in vinegar, salt or ketchup, these fries were pretty phenomenal. Super fresh and skin on.

My Po-Boy was a sight to behold. Oozing with fresh made tartar sauce that topped the Sawmill Bay Jumbo Oyster. Now I will admit, that like many people, I haven't had a great relationship with oysters. But this sandwich is a game changer. Battered on the outside leaving the edges crispy and delicious while leaving the inside moist and fresh. There is no unpleasant fishy taste, just simply the delightful Oyster flavor combined with the snappy tartar sauce and fresh lettuce. The oyster manages to contain its moisture while the edges (my favorite part) were crispy, like oyster calamari if you will.

Now completely aside from the food offered up by Chef Josh Wolfe, Fresh Local Wild stands apart from many of the food carts of our fine city. Their cart is a one of a kind. Custom designed to offer their clientele a shelter from our rain forest weather. A covered table and benches that could easily seat 4-6 people cozy and warm with a view of the kitchen. They also use a completely unique source of power. Their description pulled straight off their website says it best...

"Mobile power generation is never easy but it can be Green. Fresh Local Wild has accomplished an industry first by creating a power system that runs off 100% VEG oil. This means that when we have used the oil in the deep fryers to it's capacity we can pour it straight into the tank and fuel our generator. That's why we say 'Powered by Fish N' Chips"! An onboard intake and custom filtering system allow us to use oil from any fryer, anywhere! "

So really, the brilliant design of their cart keeps the hippies happy while the unique menu appeals to the gourmet foodies of our fine city. What a perfect balance for Vancouver.

Decided to give this food cart a go after seeing it featured on DDD.

I tried the oyster burger, as well as the clam chowder fries and the oyster burger.  The oyster burger was unique.  The oysters were firm and tasty.  The fries were a bit on the greasy side, but tasted decent.

The clam chowder fries poutine is their claim to fame, and is a unique twist on your typical fries and gravy.  The chowder does go well with the fries, but this dish is really messy to eat.  I would suggest a fork instead of your hands.

The only thing I must say though is that this is one of the pricier food carts, with no items under $8.50.  The burger was $11 or so and was a bit on the small size, though it included fries.

If you get lucky, I suggest eating at the cute little table at the back.  Scratch one off my bucket list.

This was another Diners, Drive-ins & Dives find and we were excited to track down this food truck and try their food out. We were lucky enough to be there when no one was in line, so we were able to grab the table in the back of the truck...love that feature!

I had the beef kabob burger and my partner had the seafood poutine. We both agreed that the food was good, but it wasn't something that we felt we'd put at the top of our list to eat again.

The truck was clean and the cook was great, he chatted with us a bit while he was cooking. I love the concept of the food, but I think that the burger itself left a bit to be desired. If I liked seafood, this would be the place to go.

Guy Fierri hit another home run with this one on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. TERRIFIC! Loved the Oyster Poor Boy, really great and i have family in NOLA and have eaten at every place in NOLA. Josh, Adam and Simon are food apostles. I highly recommend this place to eat and i loved the little redwood booth in the caboose. How about the Poutine too! Tres magnificent! Can't wait to try the seared Tuna Salad. Yummy!

Killer fish shwarma...  The pita was chewy and just the right size, hummus was as if it was flown in overnight straight from the middle east and, the salad was crisp, tangy and fresh as can be and the fish was cooked perfectly with just the right spice combo.  Only someone like chef josh could come up with something that is so obviously simple, unique and kick ass.

The only thing fresher than the seafood here would be if I went down to the waterfront and scooped it up myself.  Chef Wolfe brings his talents that kept bringing me back to COAST to the food cart industry and he does not disappointment.

I've had the tuna melt sandwhich and it was far superior to anything I could ever make at home.  It tasted fresh and the choice of cheese was a nice compliment to the tuna.

Find Fresh Local Wild at the southeast corner of W. Hastings and Burrard, serving up some fresh ingredients sourced locally. If you're into knowing where your food comes from, this is one food truck to support. If you're about keeping your carbon footprint as low as possible, this is one food truck to support. More on that later.

If you're into delicious, delicious food, well, you'll have to let your tastebuds be the judge on that one. The chicken fried oyster sandwich !!! If you love oysters, get it. The next day, we tried the seared tuna melt. Now THAT is the way to make a tuna melt.

We visited Vancouver for four days and ate here twice. The first time, we were able to enjoy the mobile dining patio that Chef Josh Wolfe built with his own hands. It's attached to the back of the truck, and you are basically eating ON the food truck itself. On the second day, we were back around lunchtime, and they were BUSY. The table was full, but it looks like you can make reservations via email!

Re: carbon footprint - Fresh Local Wild is powered by 100% vegetable oil, essentially using up what was JUST cooking up the fish and chips.

Would definitely visit again if I'm ever so lucky to be in Vancouver again. What a beautiful city. :)

We had lunch there today. It is the best food cart in the city.

    Order:

Fish and chips. Lightest batter you ever tasted. I could eat the batter alone it is really THAT good. The portion seemed a bit small, but maybe that's because were fighting over the best fried fish that I could EVER remember eating. (Normally, I don't yell on my reviews, but this needs to be heard!)

Chips could win an award for the best in the city. I don't even like chips; I'm not kidding--they are that good. But be careful or you will eat so many that you will feel sick afterwards. :)

Price: $12 bucks or so. Drink extra. Tip-worth it!

Tuna Melt-also totally awesome but not quite as good as fish and chips.

Even the chicken sandwich looked good, and next time I'd order a salad. I was so caught up with the chips that I didn't notice the salads.

We were able to sit on the truck without a reservation with another couple who had made a reservation. It was so nice, but a bit chilly down by the water on what seems to be the normal cloudy summer day this year.

The place was packed but fast and efficient.

Proprietor and chef Josh Wolfe was the talented chef at Coast and boy, does his talent shine!

Apparently, he also owns the cute little "authentic" smoked hot dog cart around the corner. We will go there next time.

He was a bit rushed, but everyone was so friendly, and to get our food that quickly at noon on a weekday was amazing.

I am still satisfied three hours later.  I seriously challenge you to find a better, cuter, nicer or tastier truck in the city!

***Note*** Later, the consensus was that we both did feel a bit ill, but I don't think it was the fault of the place. Next time, I think I might skip the fries. They were really good, but all of that fried food...not so much. So that's why I'm staying at five stars. Let me know what you think!

That's five stars for cart food, not a five star dining experience! LOL

    But for eight bucks......

I had an Albacore Tuna "tuna melt", with the tuna seared rare, tasting amazing, on a great multi grain bread, with cheese and just a great taste.

I enjoyed it for a full five minutes - every bite!

They're poised at Hastings and Burrard from 11 am -3 pm, M-F.

If you're downtown and want a great lunch, that you'll REMEMBER - well worth checking out

I know that I'll be back!

I am from San Francisco, I love food trucks, we have lots of them - and I can say, without a second thought that this was the best food truck experience I have ever had.

The food was incredible - I had the seared ahi tuna melt w/havarti, and seafood chowder and their fries.

Everything was absolutely wonderful - well prepared, subtle, extremely fresh tasting and made with care and love. The guys that run the truck are such great guys that seem to take a lot of pride in what they do and know a lot about what they are serving and where it came from, and the little heated dining section in the back is an awesome touch...I would eat here once a week at least if I lived in Vancouver.

So I came to a conference at the Vancouver Convention Centre and had heard about this food truck from Diners Drive-ins and Dives. I went on a Saturday, but sadly the truck wasn't there =( But, I persisted and found them again on a Monday. I tried the chicken fried oyster sandwich. Very tender, crispy, juicy and incredibly flavorful. I saw Chef Josh Wolfe and he was super nice to talk to. The next day, on my last day in Vancouver, I chose to go back to the truck to try the seafood chowder poutine. Man, those were some good fries. Who knew that fries, cod, mussels, veggies, and chowder could be such an amazing combo. It's like a bread bowl soup, but with fries. Very nice and tasty comfort food. When I got there that Tuesday, two of the items on the menu were already gone by 1:00 pm. So get there fast! The prices on the menu were a little pricey for a food truck, but I walked away very happy.

Came here for lunch today with a friend. I had heard a lot of hype about how amazing this place is, and was pretty excited to try it... however it just didn't really live up.

I got the tuna melt sandwich, which sounded amazing... but I was disappointed. The tuna itself was delicious, but the bread? It was regular old brown bread and mine was toasted preeetty dark- just on the verge of being burnt, but not completely blackened. The bread tasted of burnt oil which overpowered the tuna. And you know when your grilled cheese is too grilled, and it cuts up the roof of your mouth? It was like that. Not fun to eat.

The food took awhile, which is completely understandable, given that we came at peak lunch hours and there were heaps of people getting their food there.  Props to the guys who run that place- they are cheerful and funny and very friendly- I could tell they were swamped but they still had some fun with it.

My pal got the chicken club and it was tasty but there was nothing redeeming or special about it.. pretty run of the mill chicken club.  He works right by there and I don't think he'll be back.

The fries were good and greasy. Nothing to complain about there.

We were both kind of disappointed about lunch. My friend said to me, "well it's street truck food, what do you expect?" But I do expect more than that. I'm totally down for local, wild and sustainable eats and happy to pay a higher price for them too- but this experiece just wasn't satisfying at all.

It was a sunny friday lunchtime that I visited- probably the busiest they are all week, so I'll cut them some slack. And I'm still down to give Fresh Local Wild another try, because the fish n chips looked really yummy.

lots of things sounded yummy here but i went with the halibut fish and chips.  now, i dont usually order fish and chips because im not usually very excited by it.  why did i then you ask?  because i heard it was good, i was in vancouver and i thought it seemed like an appropriate time to get it.

and i was pretty happy i did. the fish was tasty and crunchy and so were the fries.  i like a crispy fry.

plus they had a cute little bench attached to the end to eat at!
