I have been here many times before, usually with my Grandfather and Dad, on multi-generational lunch dates. Recently popped in again, this time with bf. We ordered our meals to go. I got a 1 pc fish and chips and was convinced to try poutine. DELISH.
Fact: If the size of the fish is smaller than avg in your order, they will give you a second piece free of charge. I ended up with a 2pc for the price of one, and bf got 4pc for the price of 3. That brings him giddy, child-like joy!
The fish is wonderful. Not TOO battered, but golden and crispy and the fish is perfectly cooked. The fries are good, the poutine was fabulous.
The tartar sauce is packaged, but that's not really a big deal.
The service really makes this place a stand-out. The ladies I have dealt with here are just wonderful. They are always up for a chin-wag and are super friendly. I felt like I wanted to give them a hug before I left. I didnt, but maybe next time! :) -

I Love Soups and Chowders!! So, when I walked into Fredie's for the first time and heard they had seafood chowder, I had to get it.
The thing that struck me right away was the extremely friendly staff and the time they took to introduce themselves to you.
Lynn took my order and asked my name, wrote it in on top of the order, then asked for my order. It was a small thing, but being called by name immediately makes you feel at home.
The Chowder was loaded with fresh lobster, scallops, haddock bits, potatoes, onions and more... the best chowder I've had in a long time. Just a pinch of dill would make it all the better.
5 Stars for the Seafood Chowder family recipe! -

If I have a craving for fish and chips, Freddie's is, quite simply, this only place I will go.
The do have a good number of items on the menu, but I have never strayed from the standard two piece fish and chips, and I probably never will.
The service is great, the fish is fresh, and the flavour is spot on. -

I sort of feel like the proverbial East German Judge here given everyone else has given it 5 stars! I love fish & chips and is often a safe order where ever you go. Few do it exceptionally, but few do it bad either. Fredies to me falls into the latter, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't exceptional.
My love affair with fish & chips goes way back. Coming from a fishing village on the Bay of Fundy we had fish a lot, but we also only had one restaurant and I think all the years I only ever had fish & chips there. There are two stories that revolve around my first word, my Grandmother said it was Pepsi, my great uncle claims he took me to said restaurant as a toddler and I blurted out TARTAR sauce. What can I say, even as a kid I had exceptional taste and knew what was important!
I wish some fish & chip place would mix it up with the fish selection. I grew up eating flounder in my fish & chips and it is my favorite. Almost all the fish & chip places do haddock and while haddock is a fine fish, a little variety would be nice!
Back to Fredies, I went in and found the lay out very awkward. I have no problem with small locations, but it was hard to get up to order as people who had already ordered were hanging around waiting for their take out. I decided to go for the 2 piece fish & chips and for $9.18 with tax you can't go wrong.
I decided to eat in as I am of the option deep fried food never holds up well to take out. I grabbed a stool at the window and my dinner was brought to me. Right away my reaction was it was just an okay serving size and the fish didn't look all that crispy.
I was impressed with the malt vinegar being right there and not having to ask for it. Why anyone would use regular vinegar when you have the option of malt is beyond me. They had packages of kraft tartar sauce available as well and also offered costumers a lemon wedge if they wanted one. I did not get offered one, but I didn't want one so I didn't mind so much. But after hearing everyone else get asked, it stood out.
My feelings on tartar sauces are mixed. I admire when place make things from scratch and generally feel it is better. But lets face it what passes as homemade tartar sauce in most places is just a store bought mayo, store bought mustard and a store bought relish of some sort, and most of them are so lackluster I can live with the kraft packages.
I took a bite of the fish and was left with the feeling that it was under seasoned, the fish over cooked and the batter under cooked. The hard ship of par cooking something like fish. I get form a timing perspective it is almost necessary for a place doing quick turn around.
The fries looked good, I like mine on the slightly crispier side. I also thought they were undercooked as the inside still had a bite. Perhaps this was by design, but I am a fan of the crispy outside and tender inside. This is when par cooking does help.
With lots of tartar sauce and malt vinegar the food was good but to me you could get just as good fish & chips just about anywhere with a better set up if you want to stay and enjoy it. The price is good, but given the paper plates and plastic forks and knives, one would expect a good price.
Give it a try, I feel like I might be being picky given how much everyone else seems to love it, but I found it no better then any other fish and chips you could get from any restaurant or pub. -

Hiding just off Chain Lake Dr. this little gem serves up some of the best haddock around. Generous portions and fresh fish! Don't be fooled by the little store front. It is worth looking for. I prefer a little more pep in the sauce but the yam fries were a nice change from the usual.

Urgh....as far as fish and chips go.....this is the spot. I had a 3 pc fish and chips a few mins ago. It was so very good....so good in fact I ate every bit...now I feel like I'm gonna barf....but in a good way. It was that good ill probably eat my barf if it dares come up.
Any time I'm in the mood for fish and chips this is where my money goes.
I'd advise take-out. It's rather small and it might be hard to find seating for a few people together . -

Proof that Yelp has an impact!
Tammy, who own's Fredie's, just joined Yelp and sent me a thank you note for the review. And she pointed out something I was wrong about! They do indeed have malt vinegar, but not in take out packages! If you ask for it, though, they'll put it in a cup for you. Tammy actually agrees with my opinion that F&C without malt vinegar is just plain wrong.
Was back today for another fantastic lunch. Keep up the good work, guys.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Five Starfish out of Five!
Fredies Fantastic Fishhouse isn't just a fun, clever name. They do have the best Fish and Chips in the Halifax area and beyond. I say beyond because twenty minutes or so outside of Halifax, in a beautiful area called St. Margaret's Bay, is where their second location is. And that location is definitely just as good.
The staff are great no matter what location you are at! They are kind, as fast as can be and definitely deserve big tips. So don't skip on the tip or Karma will find you. Is that how Karma works? Probably not. Either way, tip big and smile back because these people work hard.
You can easily mess up Fish and chips in my mind. If you let the batter bake too long causing it to be hard to bite into is just one of the ways. Many places skimp on the fish and put more batter than fish in there meals. Not at Fredies Fantastic Fishhouse. They don't skimp on anything. And if you don't get full from the portions they give you, you seriously have a problem because I can't get through any of their meals. And I have a never ending appetite.
I'm really happy a place like Fredies exists. Its almost impossible to find a place that uses batter to put quality into their food as well. So this is a refreshing change of pace and one I indulge in at least once a month. -

Fish is excellent and the service is very friendly. It's a tiny location with a few bar stools and outdoor tables in the summer but service is usually very speedy and you can usually find a seat. If you work in the area, you can always call in your order and they can have it ready in 5 minutes for pick-up!
I've tried their 2 pc fish and chips and their fish burger on numerous occasions. The fish is lightly battered and consistently cooked perfectly - not overcooked. The chips are pretty good as well as the sweet potato fries. It's a small menu but that's a good thing cause they stick to what they do well.
This is definitely a good find especially considering the chain/ roadhouse type restaurants in the Bayer's Lake area. Wish there was more to choose from in this area but glad there is at least one decent place to eat for now. -

I have to give an update to my review. Tonight we went out for supper. Fish and Chips were on the brain.
This particular location is both Fish and Chips with Pizza (Big Reds) on the menu as well.
The place was not overly packed which was nice. We ordered, it took a while to get the food, but well worth the wait. Piping hot , fresh fish, sizzling home made fries, brought to our table.
Lemon was offered as well as drinks. The place started to get busy, so we were happy we went when we did. The owner comes out from behind the counter and goes around to each table to ask , "How is everything, is there anything else we can get you". This is exceptional customer service.
As usual the order was so large , we had to get part of it to take home. The pieces of fish are a large portion.
But, as it happens, we also had to take some pizza back home for the hungry mouths, who are not big fish and chip fans. We ordered two medium pizza's. The deal here is buy one get the second for 1/2 price.
Not bad , and the pizza was welcomed as we came home. Now I am not a big fan of the Big Red's Pizza at all. It is ok, but would not go out of my way for it.
My five star is for the Fish and Chips and customer service.Listed in: The Best Fish & Chips
