Review from Jeff P.
Eastern Passage, NS
Every sweet-tooth candy junkie like myself knows about the Freak Lunchbox. Or at least they should.
But my review isn't to brag how great the candy is. Instead, I'm writing how great the staff is.
I drove away from a place on Spring Garden, off of Barrington and the time was 8:57pm. And I knew that Freak Lunchbox closes at 9:00pm. I didn't think I was going to make it, but I had to try. I just had a craving for that damn Whatchamacallit bar.
I squealed my tires to a halt, parked right in front of Freak Lunchbox. I check the time -- it's exactly 9:00pm on the dashboard clock. Will they let me in?
OF COURSE! They are the Freak Lunchbox! I open the door and just say out loud to anyone - "Did I make it?!?"
The 2 girls working "Oh yeah! -- Come on in!" Big smiles.
I love you, Freak Lunchbox. Thanks again! -

I'm trying to come up with some sort of kid in a candy store joke, but it's falling flat. Here's the deal - it's way better to be an adult in a candy store because you can buy whatever you want! This shop is just pure fun. It offers everything from gag gifts to bulk candy to specialty chocolate bars you can't find in most stores, and so much more.
Be forewarned - it's a popular spot and often jammed with other patrons. But the tunes they have blaring, the colourful surroundings, the smiling faces behind the counter, and the fact that you're buying delicious treats will make it all okay.
But my favourite thing about Freak Lunchbox? The milkshakes. These glorious weapons of mass destruction for the lactose-intolerant are so good - thick, creamy, and tasty. The list of flavours is long, but my choice is almost always Nutella.Listed in: Dairylicious, May Day!

Being both a freak and a closet candy junkie, to me this place is like St Catherine's street (Montreal) to a crack head. -drool-
Counter staff are always friendly, quirky and humourous. They are my dealer of choice for my candy addiction. Sure I can get it cheaper at the bulk barn sometimes, but this place is locally owned and has a great atmosphere. And the selection seems endless. Best thing, is you can put it all in one bag because they all cost the same.
I wonder if I brought my own lunch box if they would fill it with delicious candy for me? -

If you love sugar or just have a craving for it then this is a place for you. Ranging from vintage, gourmet and common goodies to weird and wacky toys, etc. Freak Lunchbox is a fun place to visit if you haven't before or even if you have.
I went there the first time the other day with big expectations, and although I was struck with some nostalgia seeing candies I haven't seen since I was a wee one, I was a little disappointed in how small the size of the store was because of how crowded it was.
I could hardly enjoy browsing all the products, because there was almost always someone trying to get through the tight quarters. For how popular the store is you'd think they would expand to a bigger place, but I guess that could be easier said than done.
Great place for candy if you don't mind small crowded areas. -

Freak lunchbox is a must visit for candy lovers of all ages. The shop is colourful, spunky and one of a kind. If your looking for a particular (hard to find) type of candy, chances are you'll run into it here and even if you don't find what you intended to, you'll most likely leave with something better.
They don't just sell candy either. They expanded their stock to quirky/fun items too. For example, gamer themed candy and novelty items can be found here too.
I loved my visit. It's a small shop but they use they space extremely well. A must go! -
Review from Tarah F.
Although the prices are a bit steep compared to the Bulk Barn, it is the experience that makes it worth it. The look on my boyfriends 5 year old daughter as we entered this place was priceless. We let her pick out a few things, and she opted for the slush puppy liquid candy, and a few select candies from the back section. I also opted for a few candies and was quite happy with my choices. The music was loud and entertaining, and the staff were happily dancing a long. It is a small space so be prepared to squeeze by other customers. Overall, this place is definitely worth and you should check it out too if you are looking for a more exciting option than Bulk Barn.

If you don't love the Freak Lunchbox you must not love candy...and then I'm not sure if I can love you.

I'm here to get ma freak onnnn. Missy Elliot style.
No seriously, who on the planet doesn't love freak lunchbox? If we're
talking about a source that is your one stop shop for everything
candy, then freak lunchbox is where its at. It is totally ghetto and
includes candy from your childhood that you aren't going to find
anywhere else.
My favorite part about the whole joint is that you get a bag and fill
it up with whatever you want and then get it weighed at the front. Mix
and match baby, furthering the ghetto.
It is the best place to take your grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins,
anything that isn't actually your child and get them super sugar
highed. Gummy worms the width of my arm? Chhhh-yea. -

I have a confession to make. I'm a candy freak. So I'm embarrassingly at home in the colourful explosion of teeth-rotting goodness that is the Freak Lunchbox.
Every now and then, I'll stop in on the way home from work and load myself up a big bag of goodness. (Predominantly sours, heavy on that mythical flavour known as blue raspberry.) I don't even pretend it's for anyone but me.
The staff are fantastic. I rarely leave without having had a giggle at either something someone said, or something I overheard them saying to each other. When I had a Mad Men-themed birthday party, a staffer helped me comb the store for retro candies and chocolate bars.
Back in the day, I was the employee of a candy store myself. Which, likely started me on the road to my blue raspberry problem.
Note to the staff: Be grateful you do your candy by weight. Back in my day (shakes cane) we had to count out penny candies for eight year olds. I swear they got sick pleasure out of making me count out 500 Swedish fish. -

You know when you have a day from hell and you just can't take it anymore? Some people grab a beer, I grab a piece (or perhaps several pieces) of chocolate.
Luckily enough I work perhaps 30 steps (or if I take small steps - 40) from this store and I inevitably wander there once a week (i mean once in a while). The selection is enormous, the staff are fun and upbeat and although I have not tried the milkshakes I understand they are awesome!
I have purchased bars that I have not enjoyed since I was young (er). Although on a side note - I am lusting after Rowntree Maple Buds.
Back to my review. Store is clean, and the bins are well stocked. I have taken my nieces and nephew there and their eyes bulge!
Go, and take in the fun of this place. Enjoy a pop shoppe pop or a jones. Indulge in some candy or a quirky pez dispenser. You know you want to! -

Oh. My. God. Seriously. I could basically just repeat that for this entire review, and that sums up how I feel about Freak Lunchbox. It is the Best. Place. Ever. EVER. This is probably getting irritating, so I'll stop, but for realz, it's awesomesauce.
Thing one: British chocolate. YES! That stuff is so much better than our chocolate (and don't get me wrong, I like our chocolate), but the Brits do it really really right. And having it available in my own backyard (and only steps from work - a bit dangereux, I will say) means that I don't have to embarrass myself by buying $60 worth of chocolate every time I go through Heathrow airport. People start to look at you funny.
Thing two: Jelly Bellies! Oh man, I love those things. I typically end every date Boyfriend and I go on by demanding to go to Freak Lunchbox, drunkenly buying $10 worth of pina colada Jelly Bellies, and collapsing at home in a sugar coma. Clearly, I'm the best date ever.
Thing three: Candy by weight! And hilarious candy! They once had tiny gummy puffins. PUFFINS! Just super unique options and all at your finger tips. Kudos, Freak Lunchbox, kudos.
The ONLY and I mean ONLY thing I could ever complain about is that once in a while, the sales staff are a smidge overenthusiastic. And at the end of the day, enthusiasm is preferable to apathy, so it's not much of a complaint. But I have bad nerves and being yelled at (even when it's just saying hello) is a bit off-putting.
But everyone should go here on a regular basis, I'm pretty sure it'd make the world a better place.Listed in: 30 Days of Yelp

This is a beautiful, bright cheery spot on Barrington street. It always makes me smile walking by.
The staff are friendly, but the real draw is the candy. They have all your classic retro favorites, British imports and more. The prices can be a little high especially for the imports, but as a once in a while treat they are awesome. Love the Wonka Bars.
My favourite though are the bins of candy, it's by weight so you can mix and match as many candies as you like (though be careful the price can climb quickly). My 5th star is awarded to them because they have a bin of candy bananas, like the kind you find in a box of runts! These are my favourite, and I love that I don't have to get stuck with the lame lime and orange flavors to get my banana fix.
Haven't tried their milkshakes yet, but I hear they are delicious!Listed in: The Sweet Spot

The Freak Lunchbox might be one of my favorite spots in the city. Following in my fathers chocolate monster footsteps, I find myself running up over my lunch break at least one a month for a sweet snack.
Things I love about the Freak Lunchbox:
(1) The amazingly friendly staff members who are always smiling and engaging from the second you walk in the door
(2) The bulk candy that you can mix and match into one bag for the same overall price... brilliant!
(3) The amazing assortment of old school candy that takes you back to elementary school. Helllo pez dispensers!! I also continue to look for bubble gum toothpaste when I go in - I used to love that junk!
(4) The overall atmosphere is so up-beat and high energy that even when you go in on a gross rainy day, which, let's be honest, is about 50% of the time in Halifax, you are instantly in a better mood.
Delicious! -
Review from Joe H.
I'm pretty sure any place that sells candy ranks at the top of any list. While walking around Halifax, this place was definitely the most inviting. I mean, they sell candy!
I'm a big fan of snacking while walking/eating so this place was a pleasant surprise on my Halifax exploration day. It's actually quite amazing the amount of sugary gifts that they stock. Everything from self serve buckets, to candy from england to lunch boxes. I could probably spend all day in here (and then probably gain 10 pounds instantly).
The only thing I can say about this place is that I wish it was bigger. But if we're in the wishing mood, I guess I also wish Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory was real and I lived there with the oompa loompas. The snozzberries taste like snozzberies! -
Review from Ben B.
Okay okay okay...There isn't much more that I can say about this candy castle. Yep, you can make a mixed bag of all your favourite chocolates, gummies and jellybeans. Sure, you can find vintage candy throwbacks and bobblehead Jesus.
But what you may not have known is that this is my go-to destination for the best milkshakes in the city. Oh yes, my friends. Their milkshakes bring this boy to the yard. And I'm like, it's better than yours.
B-line for the cash and their super friendly and fun staff will hook you up, not just with a cold, thick, creamy concoction, but probably also a laugh or two. You can mix your milkshake flavours to create your own personal masterpiece, although you'd be a damn fool to not go with my specialty: vanilla, peanut butter and butterscotch. A DAMN FOOL, I SAY.
It's not exactly cheap but it's definitely far more than one mere mortal can handle on his or her own. The solution? Date it up! Pop in and grab some sweets with your sweet, and stroll around the summer city with a fistful of awesome. Besides, calories don't count when you're in motion, right?Listed in: Bringing Barrington Back!, Ice Cream Chillin', Sugar Rush.

I forgot to add about their milkshakes!
Freak Lunchbox's flavours include: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butterscotch, peanut butter, banana, nutella, and several others. There is usually a new flavour that is out for a limited time (cherry right now.) Today I finally tried one just for you, gentle readers, and can I say: best, milkshake. in. the. city. yet.
Maybe it was the best because it was banana/nutella flavoured, but also it was wonderfully thick and smooth (not the soupy mess so often found elsewhere.)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Chocolate mint milkshakes. Need I say more?
Maybe I should... Freak Lunchbox has the best milkshakes I have ever tried they also cater to the most interesting of tastes, letting you choose a mixture of any flavour they have. There is no limit to what can be done.
On another note: I was very impressed at the lunchbox collection they have... I mean, Joe Ledbetter designs? Hello!
Anyway, Freak Lunchbox is a candy store, there's plenty of jelly beans, penny candy, and old timey candy bars to look at. I mean after watching Half Baked I didn't even think Abba-Zabas really existed... Oh Thurgood Jenkins, you are fit for a fairy tale. -
Review from Sue A.
With a carnival atmosphere, " the Freak" is both a dentist's dream and easily one of the most fun candy stores you will ever visit. The experience is as fun as the candy is delicious.
The bulk bins feature hundreds of candies, ju jubes, smarties, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered gummie bears, mojos, and double salted liquorices just to name a few. Bulk candy is sold by weight so grab a plastic bag and fill'er up with the best selection in Halifax. If you don't see what you're looking for, ask the friendly staff and they'll look out back.
The Freak also has a large selection of what I would call vintage candy--Freshen up gum, Michael Jackson trivia cards, Thrills, Pez dispensers--all the good stuff from my childhood. The wide array of campy pop culture items such as glow in the dark nuns, wax mustaches and novelty clocks make perfect gifts for occasions ranging from office parties to Secret Santa to bachlorette parties. Lots of fun without breaking the bank.
If you're feeling thirsty, grab yourself a Pop Shop pop, or better yet, order one of their delicious milkshakes. With a list of about 15 flavours you can combine up to three flavours. My favourite is chocolate nutella.
The minute you leave the store, you'll be planning your return and your next dentist's appointment. -
Review from Judy C.
Unique candy store with amusing décor. As their window claimed, they do have a "ferocious" selection of candy with the basics (gummy bears, chocolate-covered raisins, jelly beans) and candy with charming names like "I Heart York" for York patties, "Chocolate Rox" for M&M-like chocolates that looked like rocks.
Even if you don't go there to buy sweets, then at least go there to be amused with the many quirks inside the store.Listed in: A tourist's sample of Nova…

I defy you to be able to walk past this candy and specialty store without popping in.
'Freak Lunchbox' not only carries 5¢ candy which you can pop into bags or Chinese takeout boxes, but also a wealth of hard to find candy like Altoid spearmint and retro Pez containers.
This candy shop also has the best selection of jelly bellies in the city. Be sure to check them out, especially if you're looking for some specialty gift ideas. -
Review from Laura P.
Destination sugar high! This little candy shop holds the key to all things TREAT. Whether its sweet, salty, sour or beyond, Freak Lunchbox accommodates the cravings of all your most mouthwatering desires.
It plays on the whole 'Willy Wonka' aesthetic with vibrant colours and an excessive stocking of goodies. Chocolate addicts and candy freaks alike can scour the selection and come away with a fix. And might I add, they DO host the best of the best-- gummies, swedish berries, peaches, sour jubes, skor bar, oh henry bits, peanut butter brittle.... I could go on and on. Packaged goods and bars are also an option!
Holding 3 walls of assorted treats in bulk, simply grab a bag and add whatever you like! They'll weigh your collection at the cash, so your price depends on your appetite. This may also be an opportunity to explore fun gift ideas, with offerings of retro candies and the sort. I always seem to find something to give me a giggle or two!
Its the spot to go if you've got a sugar craving. Fun, fairly priced and bountiful selection will satisfy any sweet tooth. -

Lets start with the good. Their selection is amazing! Especially for the size of the store. They have managed to cram just about every candy I enjoyed as a kid along with the new ones today's young wipper-snapper's enjoy. Customer service is quick and knowledgeable. One downside is the unenthusiastic expression on the Customer Service Representatives. Admittedly I might have been going on the wrong days and met the wrong ones working there. But I'm a stickler for good Customer Service and its so easy for someone to smile. In fact, years ago, McDonald's even gave them away free! Although I'm sure they charge for that now.
All-in-all, its a great place to get your "candy-on." -

I don't really have the world's biggest sweet tooth. I like candy, but I'm not constantly craving it...unless of course I'm walking by the Freak Lunchbox. When down on this end of Barrington, all bets are off.
What I like most about this place is that they carry my brand of cigarettes...Popeye Cigarettes! I used to love sucking on these sugar sticks as a child (Hook 'em when they're young) and now I can relive the experience all over again. The Freak Lunchbox definitely excels in the field of nostalgic candy. They carry many candies that I had assumed were long out of production, which can lead to a lot of "oh wow, I haven't had one of these in ages!"
There are a few things I don't like about the lunchbox, most notably its zany colors. I guess kids might love it, but I can't say I'm a fan. Secondly, I don't understand why, with so much good candy to sell, they would have a section where you can get jellybeans that taste like boogers and other nasty tasting delights. Again, I guess kids might love tormenting they're friends with a dirt flavored jelly bean, but trust me kids, that joke's going to get old. How about instead we stock up on more Wonka Bars!? Wouldn't that be more fun?
I think so.
Also, one final note, if you don't take it from me that the Lunchbox is a great candy store, take it from Alice Cooper, who claims to stop in every time he rolls through Halifax, which is shockingly often. I guess that's why he's the original shock rocker (rim shot!).
But seriously, check out the Freak Lunchbox and have the best sugar high of your life. -
Review from Lacey H.
Candy, CANDY! Sweetness, SWEETNESS! This is the place where dreams come true. A world where gummies and chocolates, gum and suckers, bars and nougat, collide creating a psychedelic colorful candy experience.
When I go into the Freak Lunchbox, I like to get two bags: one for chocolates and one for gummies. My mind goes blank as I scoop sourpatch kids, gummy-worms, sour soothers, Swedish berries, fuzzy peaches AND THEN kisses, tiny crispy-crunch bars, m&ms, chocolate covered almonds, rieces pieces - until my wrist is sore and I couldn't possibly lift another morsel of candy.
Go to this palace of sugary-sweetness. Wear your elasticated pants and indulge your sweet tooth. BEWARE: Those bulk-bags can get expensive when you go too crazy. Pay attention, stay focused and have fun.Listed in: Random Fun

The Freak Lunchbox is every child's dream candy store, on acid. On the street you are greeted by colorful signs featuring a cartoon Willy Wonka and window art with sayings like "Lucy Lu buys here fuzzy peaches here". The interior of the store is just as saliva inducing sweet, with rows of bulk candy and shelves of novelty items and treats that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in this city.
Some of my favorite purchases at The Freak Lunchbox have been; a vintage looking batman piggy bank for my boyfriend, Ricky Martin trading cards with song lyrics written on the backs, and edible lingerie that I got for my friend as a gag gift.
The candy bulk candy here is pretty standard, your usual Swedish berries, chocolate covered nuts and hot cherry lips. The magnitude of bulk candy can mean that it sometimes isn't the freshest (pieces sticking together, chewy candy is a little too hard, etc.) but you get what you pay for at this store. Prices start pretty low for the basic bulk candy, so I like to get a little of everything. This is the only spot in town where I can find my all time favorite 5 cent candy; coke bottles.
The assortment of gourmet Jelly Beans at this location is awesome, specially if you find yourself getting int the Easter spirit (as I am). Freak Lunchbox is a cool store and great if you are looking for cheap, fun candy. If you are looking for better quality chocolate or fancier gifts than edible undergarments, you wont them here.
Hot Hint: Like the staff shirts? You can buy Freak Lunchbox merchandise at the counter. T-shirts go for fifteen dollars. -

I am the proverbial kid in the candy store, especially when I'm in this particular candy store. I don't know - walls of candy just get me excited. All colourful and sweet. If I had my 'druthers, I'd buy some of everything, but as with most of the good things in life, restraint is in order when selecting which candy to buy at Freak Lunchbox. Sometimes I hate being an adult. Lots of fun things to choose from, in bulk bins so you can get just as many as you want.
This is also a great shop for fun gift-shopping, with lots of clever novelties and, well, freaky lunchboxes that make great secret-santa gifts for your office Christmas party. -

Freak Lunchbox is like Disneyland for your stomach. Cross the threshold and enter the amusement park of candy.
Freak Lunchbox crams into it's tiny shop an overwhelming array of candy. Here, you'll find both new adventures and old favourites, including Pez dispensers of every imaginable character.
I love to visit Freak Lunchbox when it's time to fill Christmas stockings. One year, I dropped $50 here just on candy! Since then, I've become much more reasonable in my selections, but I won't say that the urge to go hog wild isn't always at the back of my mind.
If you've never been to Freak Lunchbox (where have you been living, exactly?) you are in for an amazing experience. I wish they would open a sister store somewhere besides downtown, as parking can be brutal. -

The Freak Lunchbox is one of the few spots that I'm"m aware of that you can go and buy Jelly Belly jelly beans by individual flavour (e.g. A&W Root Beer, Bubblegum, Strawberry Daiquiri, etc.). The candy store is famous for selling all of the hard to find candies that you can't find anywhere else in NS or even Canada. Personal favorites there are the Popeye Candy Cigarettes, and the American Heath chocolate bar.
The setup inside is awesome and the staff are very knowledgeable. While the prices are steep - the unique experience and great selection more than make up for it. -

The outside of this place looks like something from a carnival; the inside smells like a candy factory; and there is so much stuff packed into this store it's almost distracting to the eye.
Before I was even able to browse around I was happily greeted by the two people working the cashier. They were both so positive and upbeat and really seemed to like their jobs. I can only assume they were on some kind of sugar high from working in this candy store!
The first thing that caught my eye in here was a Pez set of all the Wizard of Oz characters. As a child, I would have LOVED to have this collection. As an adult I would still LOVE to have this collection. They also had a set of Disney Princess Pez dispensers, which is cute for the little Disney girls out there.
Not only is this place full of all different kinds of candies and chocolates, but it also has some great novelty gifts. There are cake toppers of reluctant bride and grooms, a 'Grow up to be Gay' kit, which contained a magnetic hairdryer, brush, lipstick, etc.
If I ever have a gigantic sweet tooth, or just need something funny and silly to give as a gift, Freak Lunchbox is starting to crawl its way to the top of my list. -

Downtown would not be complete without a trip to the Freak Lunchbox. Maybe it was the sunny beautiful day out that attracted so many people here today. Or maybe it was just the fact that if you can't find it here, then you will be out of luck on that hunt for that special candy.
We were on the hunt for Rock Candy, we were at other shops but no one carried them. Freak Lunchbox does, they also carry the Chocolate Charleston Bar. You just have to love this spot, jammed to the roof with goodies, something for everyone. I especially loved the little Chinese takeout boxes you can use to put your mixed candy in.
You can always walk out of here with a smile on your face.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Every time my wife and I visit Halifax, a stop by the Freak Lunchbox is absolutely mandatory. With candy galore and all kinds of goofy and hilarious gift ideas, it would be incredibly easy to spend an obscene amount of time (and money!) going over the store inventory. The staff have always been in a helpful mood every time we've visited and I honestly don't think we've ever left empty handed.

"Me want candy," I say to myself whenever I pass by this store. If candy is on your mind too, Freak Lunchbox has got you covered. The real deal is the bulk section in the back where you'll find such beauties as root beer gummies, chocolate covered jujubes, Swedish fish, and the enticingly named unicorn poop. Shovel as much or as little of each as you want out of the bins and into your bag and you're set to go. Just try not to eat it all before you get home. Side bonus here is that you get that wonderful candy-on-candy effect that happens when you bag different treats in the same receptacle. Sour dust wipes off on chocolate raisins; gummy worms gain that exotic crunchy coating as they pick up random bits dropped by other pieces...
The front of the store is filled with pre-packaged candy and novelties. I was pulled in by the display of Wii controller-shaped mint tins, but disappointed to learn there weren't any old school consoles represented. (Apparently this was my fault for shopping too close to Christmas.) -

This store brings me back to the days of my child hood! I love this store, it's great! The store itself is quite small but full of vibrant colour. The entire store is one big candy! The ceiling is decorated with candy boxes and there is a life size Uumpa Lumpa outside the store. You can go around and pick which candy you would like to buy by putting it into a takeout box. It is a bit costly and it is easy to spend a few dollars there. They have candy that you would never be able to buy in a 'normal' store which is what makes this store so unique. For example, I remember as a kid being able to buy the sugar sticks. Well, they sell them at the Freak Lunch Box. Great store!

I dare you to walk past this store with its lil piggy and Martian gatekeepers and not be compelled to stop in to... "just look around." Young and old will lose their cognitive abilities and find themselves inside, oogling and oohing, zoning out and subsequently waking up to find they're drooling and cradling packages of Necco wafers. There's selections of contemporary candies and some blasts from the past like Fruit Stripe gum. Harder to find confections litter the shelves like bars of nougat and strawberry flavoured Cow Tails and an entire fridge of curious energy beverages and soda. In the back is the ultimate by-the-KG free for all, just grab a plastic baggie and have at it. If you've a fan of anything gummi, then this will make your day. Personal favorites include cubes of turkish delight, spearmint gummi's, and candy covered gummi bears. Various random tsotskes are at every turn to amuse you and the friendly staff is there to help to lift your haul onto the scale to figure out the damage you owe.

What can be said of this place as it is indescribable. Maybe it could be called a little piece of Willy Wonka's factory made real. Somehow they have just brought the candyshop of your childhood dreams into our reality. As a kid I went into many candy stores with high hopes and generally found my candy stores that might have been designed by an elderly aunt. Not this one. What is amazing is that the same people have a store in Bedford that is totally lacking in energy and pizazz. Without exaggeration, this location might possibly be the best candy store in the world.
