This was hands down one of the most unique Italian food experiences I've had in New York. Caveat, since it was my first time here, I wasn't very adventurous when I came to ordering and just went with what was "popular." That being said, all hail the sweet potato and sage ravioli in parmesan broth!
The skin of the dumpling was thin but supple and chewy. The filling was a perfect balance of flavor. The natural sweetness of sweet potato paired amazingly well with the light and savory parmesan broth...In other words, I've never tasted pasta that contained so much personality.
Plus, the service was great. My friend and I were waiting for the third member of our party when our server came by and told us politely and apologetically that since there were other people waiting, we had to leave the table--which was fine by us, since most of us were ready to leave anyway--but the fact that she said it in sincerity vs. snobbery made all the difference. And why would we delay another group of diners from enjoying the exquisiteness of Frankies 17? Exactly. -
Review from John L.
FYI -- F 17 has re-opened and retooled into Francesca's, a tapas concept with the former chef Ryan Bartlow (who is Basque?) at Frankie's 570 in the WV. The new concept was a surprise when we visited this week... and allowances were high since it's only be reopened for a single week.
But... our dinner that perfectly disappointing combination of not good and relatively expensive. Misses on nearly every cooked dish we tried, especially the awful octopus salad; the cheeses & salumi were solid/great, but of course they were (weak presentations though, and getting bread to the table was a constant battle). The Rioja potatoes were solid, the tuna-stuffed piquillo peppers totally unmemorable, but the bacalao was nice. The cocktail menu has just 4 options (1 was 86'd our night) and all of which include a lot of sherry and vermouth. Huh? You probably want the #4.
With a management team like the Frank's in charge surely this place will be getting better... but there is a lot of ground to make up to be anywhere near worth the price or fond memories of the Frankies menu. -

Loved their sweet potato ravioli, and can't go wrong with cheese plate and crostinis (mmmm mushroom). Also, I love to end with the red wine prunes and marscapone.
However, they aren't Frankies anymore and have MORPHED into Francesca's. A Basque restaurant. My roommate and I are not pleased about this change in direction, hence the 3-stars.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO GO TO BROOKLYN TO EAT MARSCAPONE? -

So sad this place has closed!
After putting it off for months, I made a point to get here before they closed. They're reopening into a Tapas place, but at least there is still Supper.
The service is great. I went on a Thursday night hoping that I wouldn't have to wait long for a table, and I didn't. Waited about 15 minutes and we were seated. The menu is small. Not a whole lot of choices, but that means whatever is on the menu, is that much better. We started with a warm mozarella that was melted to a point that it was spreadable. It sounds weird, but it was so good. The bread was nice and cripsy and the mozarella, nice and cheesy.
I had the cavatelli with sausage and the boyfriend had the polenta with sausage and peppers. His was amazing! I loved his dish so much. The sauce was so good and extremely flavorful. I wasn't a huge fan of my dish. It was lacking flavor, but I did dip my cavatelli (for homemade pasta, it was pretty good) into his sauce and it made it so good. The sausage in my dish was good, but the pasta itself just didn't have the flavor burst I was looking for.
We skipped dessert, but the service was great. They're a little slow, but not because they're just slow, but because they're relaxed. It's a very "chill" place, so they don't rush you out and they take their time to go around. If you ask for something, they're more than happy to serve you.
Even though I wasn't a huge fan of my dish, I would have definitely gone back to try some of their other dishes. So sad to see them go, but super excited to try the new food! -

Went for a later weekday dinner - probably around 9:30?
Lovely chill atmosphere, a little rugged, one of my fav LES streets.
SLOWEST. SERVICE. EVER. Honestly almost walked out, and I NEVER do that.
Food was good - maybe my expectations were too high because I was so annoyed.
Would consider going back, but not at the top of my list. -

So after my tearjerking experience at Le Cirque, I sort of lost faith in the whole restaurant week thing (though I know you'll see me doing it again)... I had cancelled reservations to Apiary, and came to Frankie's instead.
We got the two dishes that stood out to us like sore thumbs. The house-made cavatelli with faiccos hot sausage and browned sage butter ($18), and the house-made pappardelle with lamb ragu and tarragon ($19). The cavatelli tasted almost like gnocchi; the ones dusted with Parmesan cheese were especially palatable (more cheese would've been better). Good thing there were the sausages to pick up the flavor. The pappardelle was also cooked al dente, and my golly, the lamb was off the hook. Lamb is unfortunately often served tough, dry, and chewy, but Frankie's made an example for them all; their lamb is moist, soft, and tender, like it was braised and fell off the bone and into the plate. It also didn't taste gamey at all.
Oh yeah, our appetizers: the avocado and pesto crostini turned out to be smaller than I had expected for $4. The hot pine nut polenta was tasteful; perhaps it's again the Parmesan sprinkled on top that made me feel better about eating concentrated corn products.
Overall, it was a delicious meal at a candle-lit restaurant, where we entered at 7pm on a weeknight and did not have to wait. -

Frankie's is one of those solid players that comes off the bench and puts up a surprising number of points. The two times that I've been here have been off rebounds from nearby restaurants, and Frankie's never failed to impress. Their simplified menu is clean and straight to the point. One visit that stands out is a recent Saturday brunch; I ordered a breakfast plate with fresh, thickly cut bacon, home fries, eggs, and toast. The fries were decent but the bacon was standout... there was a perfect mix of fatty sizzle and lean strips. The eggs were sunny side up, just as I ordered.
My other impression was from their BLT sandwich, composed of the aforementioned bacon, crisp lettuce, and thick tomato slices. The real memorable aspect of the sandwich is the pizza bianca bread that they get from the Grandaisy bakery, which is the perfect fit. Lightly toasted, thin, and buttered... Delicious!
My other experience at Frankie's wasn't as memorable, but it was decent and some time has passed since then, which accounts for one less star. However, this doesn't change my new opinion that Frankie's should be considered a starter on my list of LES brunch spots: dependable, affordable, and hits the spot. -

So I've only been here for brunch, but based on my most recent visit, I won't be going back.
The service was really bad last time, the menu has changed (and the waiter didn't tell us, but that goes back to the lack of service), and it's uncomfortably warm in the winter while cramped next to either a wall or other diners.
I hear their West Vill location is roomier and has a different menu, so I might not rule it out completely, but I def won't be back to the Clinton St location. -

This is my pick for a date night, showing visitors great simple italian cuisine in NYC or whenever I feel like a nice meal out. I love this place so much that I've even got their cookbook! Every lover of Frankies should own a copy!
The menu is seasonal, but there are some items that seem to stay on the menu, namely the meatballs, gnocchi and the sides. When they have the brussel sprouts salad, it's always a great salad to start.
Their homemade pastas are also fabulous. Fresh, solid and doused in delicious homey sauces. I definitely feel like an italian mama is cooking for me whenever I eat here. I ALWAYS order the House-made cavatello with hot sausage and butter sage. Currently they have the House-made Pappardelle with Lamb Ragu & Tarragon on the menu - this is rustic and delicious! I want to venture and try other things on the menu but the homemade pastas get me every time! It's like calling out to me "pick me pick me! I'm so delicious!"
The wine list is also quite good. I quite fancy their house red or a cheaper bottle of the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Goes well with the fine cuisine at Frankies.
If I ever have room for dessert, I go for the chocolate pie. Its only a small slice, but just enough where you aren't dying from too much chocolate.
The only downside is the wait! There's always a wait because people love this place! Thankfully, there's a great bar (culturefix) a few doors down where you can wait till you get the best phone call of the night. -

This restaurant was recommended by a server at Terroir ( another place which we loved ).
Was seated right away late Sunday night. Our server recommended a great wine so we were off to a good start!
I had the braised octopus/dandelion salad and my boyfriend had the celery rood/fennel salad. Both were amazing!
Lamb Ragu with homemade Pappardelle and Meatballs is what we had for our entree. Both so yummy!
Definitely no room for dessert but with definitely go back here when we are in NYC -

I have been to this Frankie's and the Carroll Gardens location countless times. I make all my friends and out-of-town visitors come with me, and it never disappoints.
It does get very busy some nights, but it's worth the wait.
The food is consistently excellent. Try the Braised Octopus with Dandelion Greens! -

I picked Frankie's 17 for my small birthday dinner because of their
great prices, and everyone for the most part like Italian food. We sat
in the side room, which is not as loud as the first room. You can
actually have a conversation with your friends. Everyone was happy
with their food. Since I'm a vegetarian, I ordered the roasted vegetable
sandwich, which was fine. A bit odd with whole mushrooms on a
sandwich, but not bad. Still, I wished I had order something a little more exciting, such as the house-made gnocchi or sweet potato ravioli. I did try the
Cavatelli and the fennel salad, which were both delicious. The red wine
prunes with mascarpone is a must order dessert if you like prunes.
I definitely would like to go back. My only complaint is that they don't
take reservations. We were a party of 7 and had to wait an hour on a
Saturday night at 6:30. With our extra time we got a drink at the Salt
Bar which is about 3 stores down from Frankies. They have an
interesting drink menu with a great ambiance. -

Love this place. Solid pasta, great environment, and sweet garden. It is a wait, but they have amazing dishes: ravioli in sage broth, roasted red pepper polenta, spicy sausage cavatelli, and a more than drinkable house wine in a carafe for cheap. You will wait 2 hours on a Saturday, but that just means they are doing something right.

Love their salmon! Frankies executes it just right, where the outside is seasoned and blackened while the inside was a medium rare and silky. My sister and I split this dish but regretted doing so since we were craving for more.
We also split a prosciutto pizza, which was delightful and our appetizer of bread with olive oil & balsamic vinegar was a great starter dish. I also like how you can order wine by the 1/4 of a bottle. My sister and I weren't sure how much wine we were going to drink and it was more affordable to go by the 1/4 as opposed to a glass.
Frankie's is a great place to dine at to catch up with a friend or if you're on a date. -
Review from Ranu R.
Stopped in here with 2 friends on a Tuesday night. At 8 PM, there was no wait which was nice. I live down the street from Frankie's 17 and have been wanting to try it for awhile so I was looking forward to the meal. The atmosphere here is very romantic--dark, candles, I liked it a lot.
My friends and I split a bottle of wine, the antipasto platter, and then two of us got the sweet potato-sage ravioli while another friend got the lamb ragu paperdelle. Everything was delicious and well-portioned, you didn't walk out clutching your stomach in pain from overeating.
That being said, the service was slightly slow or the kitchen was backed up because our pasta took awhile to come out. I didn't mind because my friends and I were having good conversation but it was slow enough to be noticeable. Our server was very nice though, and I enjoyed our meal here overall. I will definitely come back, but it's not a super cheap meal, so more like a splurge once in awhile vs. a weekly spot for me. -

I had dinner here last night and was pleasantly surprised. The food was great, the atmosphere was romantic. My friends and I were seated right away and our waiter was friendly, attentive but not overbearing.
We split the Shaved Brussels Sprouts with Lemon & Castelrosso, Hot Pine Nut Polenta, and some cheese. Everything was great. I had the Mozzarella, Tomato & Red Peppers Sandwich. It was great. I really enjoyed the bread. My friends loved the House-made Pappardelle with Lamb Ragu & Tarragon and the House-made Cavatelli with Faiccos Hot Sausage & Browned Sage Butter.
This place is solid with no frills. I'll definitely keep this place in mind next time i'm dining in LES. -

Great place to go with your date. Definitely romantic...
We ordered sweet sausage, roasted red pepper, onion over creamy polenta & pappardelle with lamb ragu & terragon. They were delicious! Fantastic! Full of flavor! The portion were great! Not too much or too little...
The service was great! Friendly & polite staff...
Highly recommended...
We'll definitely go back... -

So, as an Italian girl I am quite picky and not very into going our for Italian food. The particular evening I let my date take me here I was in the mood for it, which barely ever happens because no one's Italian food is as good as my grandmother's.
When I walked in I was immediately charmed by the atmosphere. It was cute, dimly lit and a bit romantic. It's small and intimate and reminded me of how a real Italian restaurant should be. The waiter was so pleasant and friendly. I really enjoyed his service.
As for the food, the bread was amazing and the olive oil for dipping was a perfect touch. We shared the pine nut polenta as an appetizer. It was creamy, addictive, and delicious! I had the sweet potato ravioli in Parmesan sauce and let me tell you, this is probably the BEST dish I have had ever. My date had the Blue Crab linguine, which I tried some of. It was not too saucy and made just right.
This place is certainly a must go-to. You'll see me back here, not a doubt. -

I was in NYC last week with a friend. After looking at numerous Italian restaurants for a casual birthday dinner, I chose Frankie's 17. I was looking for something with more variety than typical 'red sauce' Italian, & Frankie's did not disappoint.
We had an outstanding dinner at Frankie's after a matinee show. Because we arrived ~6pm on a Wed. evening, there were only 3-4 tables occupied. We wanted to work our way from appetizers to dessert without being overwhelmed & our waitress gave us perfect advice re: which items to split to avoid too much food. (we each had a crostini & dessert but split a salad and entree.)
The mushroom/truffle oil crostini, beet & avocado salad & lamb ragu w/ home-made pasta were excellent. I had the wine-stewed plums for dessert & it was probably one of the best restaurant desserts I've ever had. The house red wine is a nice medium red Italian, and we loved that we could get 1/2 L. carafe at a very reasonable price. (As a Californian used to getting great wine cheap, I often involuntarily twitch a bit at restaurant wine prices.) Our waitress & all of the staff were friendly & attentive. If I lived in Manhattan, this would be a regular stop for me.
A note to those from outside the area. The restaurant is small and easy to walk by. It helped that I was in the LES earlier in the week & located the restaurant during the day. I think the Delancy St. subway station is the more convenient walk. -

Very nice place for brunch. As a vegetarian, I did not have much to choose from. My brunch date told me the place is known for its bacon. She was eating a BLT while I had granola with fresh fruit and yogurt.
Come early to beat the crowd. I believe they open at 9AM. Friendly staff. -

My friend and i were in the mood for italian... and yelped a few places and decided on frankie's 17. It was a little bit of a walk, esp. since i've hurt my left foot a week ago. But that's a small price to pay... it was worth it!
I kind of already had an idea of what i wanted to have and that was the homemade cavatelli w/ sausages! And my friend ordered the sweet potato & sage ravioli... They were both YUM... and the serving was just right = not too much and not too little... it was perfect! We weren't bloated when we got out of there!
All in all, it was lovely. It's a really cute spot. GREAT FOOD + SERVICE!
I will be back... and that's a promise! :) -

Purpose of the visit: Saturday night dinner with friends. We managed to be seated after a bit of wait. Table was nice and cozy and the restaurant had a nice buzz to it. Definitely felt like a warm lively place. We ordered a number of appetizers, favorites included the mozzarella and arugula and thelentil soup. Entree was the homemade papparadelle lamb ragu. Really nice flavor. The lamb was extremely tasty with a slight pepper flavor. The papparadelle was fresh. Fun atmosphere would definitely come back.

The food is delicious. The wine was perfect. The service was more than accommodating. The kitchen even made me a pasta aglio e olio e peperoncino (i'm vegan and was with omnivores.) No attitude whatsoever (at least not to my face) about it. Just go and enjoy some delicious food. Three of us ate very very well (2 appetizers, 3 entrees, 2 bottles of wine, dessert and espresso) for less than $200. Including tip.

This place is tiny and on a saturday night we had to wait quite a while for a table. We sipped lambrussco and ate crostini with the creamiest ricotta while we waited. I had the squash ravioli in parmesan broth which was so tasty. My friend had the gnocchi with ricotta. I don't usually like gnocchi because they are dense and starchy but these were light and doughy. The stewed prunes with marscapone were amazing! Soft, fragrant prunes cut by the creaminess of the cheese. A must get.

Took myself to lunch here Friday after a particularly scarring waxing (too much time lapsed between this one and the last one i got...TMI sorry:))
Anyways, once I survived that, I figured I needed a treat. So I walked to Frankie's 17 and oh man was it SO worth it.
Got the prosciutto and pecorino sandwich with an iced americano. First off, amen to the fact that they use stumptown here YUM!. Andt the sandwich - holy moly. So good. Just the right amount of prosciutto balanced with a thin layer of pecorino romano and a dab of mayo. And the bread was thin and crusty yet still substantial...and had salt on it. OMG love love love.
My waitress was pretty attentive, but I felt pretty bad for her as she was the only one working the floor.
All that for about 17. Really not bad considering.
AND, the bathroom always smells good, is well decorated and consistently spotless. -

Had dinner here on a Friday night and really enjoyed it. Starting with three stars because while I have no complaints, I reserve 4 stars for either amazing first time experiences or repeat successes. So please don't be deterred by my 3 star rating because I really enjoyed it.
Service was brisk and attentive. We had everything we needed.
We split a gorgonzola to start and it came with a few slices of raisin walnut bread, really good. Also they brought out some regular bread too. I love how Italians aren't afraid of carbs.
I had the gnocchi with marinara and ricotta. It was super simple but just what I wanted and really good. My friend had a couple crostini and a salad. The crostini are $3.50 for one piece which seems steep but the heaping of toppings on the crostini are generous. Peronis for both of us.
All in all a really good meal. My only complaint was the restaurant wasn't even half full and it was so loud. Might have been the table of 10 next to us drunk and screaming, but hard wood floors and walls makes for bad acoustics. -

I went last Sunday for brunch and was not disappointed. The service was pretty good and there was no wait. I had the Farmers Breakfast and opted for a biscuit instead of toast. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the potatoes were full of flavor and the bacon was THE BEST!! The biscuit was pretty good just a bit dry but the fruit spread/jam they have is amazingly awesome.
My sister had the french toast and it was equally great! You can tell they take pride in their food. The coffee was pretty good and strong as well.
The atmosphere was great and you can have a conversation with people at your table without being disturbed by your dining counterparts and feeling like people are listening to your conversation. I definitely would go again but want to try Frankies 570 in the West Side for a little change up. -

Nice ambiance, pleasant staff, a cute restaurant in general, but I'd say if you're looking for really flavorful food go elsewhere (like Bianca, in the East Village). I don't recommend the pappardelle with lamb ragu, gnocchi, or the ricotta cheesecake. But their antipasto plate was nice.

What a lovely restaurant. I've been living a block away from it for the last 4 years, yet I never think of going there. Silly me. I went 3 times this past month, each experience was terrific. The food is always incredibly satisfying, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. This is definitely one of the best, if not the best, dining option within a 10 block radius.

Get off the fence and into this amazing restaurant.
I'm now starting to write my Yelp reviews FOR the iPhone users of NYC who are pulling out their phones to try to figure out where to eat. Well, my friend, THIS is the place!!
This restaurant has it all; delicious food, amazing ambience, a great staff, and decent prices. I mean, what more do you want?
We went for my sisters' birthday tonight. She did some internet leg work earlier in the day to try to figure out where she wanted to go and stumbled upon the website for Frankies 17. The menu looked delicious and so we made it our destination. We're so happy we did.
We rolled in on this beautiful fall Monday night at eight and were seated immediately. The vibe is low-lit and comfortable. Perfect for a friendly dinner or a date. The restaurant and the gorgeous fall night seemed to be working together in perfect concert.
Our waiter was kind and knowledgeable and the food was sublime.
Rustic, no frills, totally delicious Italian fare served up piping hot and absolutely delicious. The fresh house-made pastas were all perfectly cooked al dente and bathed in the most amazing and tasty sauces that made not just completely inhaling our food a real challenge. Oh, and I should mention that the antipasto plate was substantial and very, very good. I have never in my life, before tonight, enjoyed cauliflower. Never. It was part of the antipasto plate tonight. And it was rad.
Finally, we finished up with the, wait for it, stewed prunes with mascarpone cheese. Heavenly. Coupled with a Stumptown cappuccino, it was just awesome.
So, yes, my friend, you have found your restaurant. Go on in, relax, and enjoy your dinner. -

Cute place for breakfast. Small and simple but those are the kind of places that NY-ers hunt for when they just want something delish!
I had french toast. Now honestly, it wasnt the best french toast that I have had in my lifetime but it was fluffy and cooked golden.
Its a good backup if you dont want to wait in line for the Clinton st baking company. -

There is nothing like a fantastic fresh Italian meal, served by a happy waitress, with a carafe of Montepulciano. Except when that meal is also organically made of the highest quality ingredients AND there's no wait at the door.
Maybe we just came at the right time, but at 10pm on a Wednesday night we walked right in, sat at one of the empty tables, and ordered everything that looked good.
I had the avocado and pesto crostini. It was fan-tastic. We shared one of the goat cheeses and it was perfection. And then of course there's the bread and olive oil. Of course.
For entrees I had the sweet potato ravioli and pretty much licked the bowl. I think the gnocci is slightly more my taste, but I have nothing bad to say at all about the ravioli. M had the meatball sub, which he swallowed like he hadn't eaten in a month. I got some of the bread dregs and... yum.
And then all this comes to $55? Crazy. We walked away happy and stuffed. My only wish was that there was a location near us, or at least near a convenient subway to us, but I guess if there was, there would be an even longer wait and the tourists would find out about it.Listed in: veg out!

This place is one of many cute looking places down clinton. Came here with friends and we were all pretty happy with what we got. I had the spicy sausage, i was glad it actually did have a little kick to it. A friend had the pork chop which was done very well, I just don't like ordering pork chop at a restaurant personally.

The staff was very friendly, greeting me when I came in. Afterall, I was there only customer at 6pm on a Thursday. The food was good and I loved the breezy atmosphere.
What I didnt love is was the infrequent attention of the waiter ( I was the only customer sheesh), the music via singer/songwriter at a renaissance fair, and 8 oz sodas at $3 a pop. I dont care how cute those lil coke bottles are, totally not worth it guys. -

10. as a trust fund baby.
11. the wine list was concise and crafted with purpose: bottle, carafe, or glass?
12. our bearded barkeep led us to the perfect Pinot
13. cheers, ole
14. we also enjoyed the braised octopus salad** with dandelion greens - simple, nourishing, earthy
15. the staff was gracious and hospitable, genuine, sincere
16. we concluded with the tiramisu notably served in a ceramic bowl the circumference of a cantaloupe
17. and though trend may be tired, exposed brick, dim lighting, and edison bulbs always does the trick.
