Review from Edward L.
Came here for a wedding banquet.
There are just 2 entrances: from the street (Cambie), and from a tiny doorway inside the Oakridge parking lot. The restaurant is actually separate from the rest of the mall.
Appetizer platter - jellyfish was a bit mushy but tasted okay. Smoked salmon slices were a welcome change to the pig's feet. Everything tasted okay overall.
Crab claw shrimp ball - the biggest I have ever had at any banquet. Very fresh, beautiful crispy batter on the outside.
Melon and fat choy with dried scallop - melon was a bit bland. Scallop was also quite dry, but maybe this is the intention was the dish. Flavour was okay though.
Crab + shark's fin soup - flavourful but a bit lacking on the shark's fin. There were small bits. But the soup tasted good.
Steamed rock cod - probably the best dish of the night. This dish was PERFECT. They even de-bone it for you! The meat held together, yet flaked off where needed. Beautiful.
Pigeon - a bit dry, but very crispy skins. Not too salty which is another plus.
Mushroom and abalone with steamed vegetables - too much vegetable, not enough topping. We finished the top and left a pile of veggies behind. So did every other table.
Lobster with cream sauce - chopped up nicely, so it was easy to get to the pieces that had huge chunks of meat. No complaints.
Honeymoon rice - rice was a bit on the hard side, strangely enough. The sauces were well done though, espeically the red side
Tapioca pudding (dessert) - not too sweet (good), fresh and hot
So why only 4 stars? 2 reasons.
1) The mens room had an awkward layout. You can't really use the 2nd urinal as there's a pillar in the way. Go in there and you'll see what I mean.
2) The audio/video layout is horrendous. I am sure this places does many banquets, but when the speakers are saturated (distorting everything) but still too quiet to be heard from the ends of the restaurant (we were only the 3rd table from the head table), there's a problem. We couldn't hear a damn thing. Oh, and the TV screens can only be seen by 2/3 of the restaurant.
However, the service here is VERY prompt. It's not 100% professional, but they got the job done. Mind you, this was a wedding, and I am sure those things can get stressful for the staff, with everyone running around like crazy. The restaurant was a war zone. Props to them. -

The other Oakridge Chinese Restaurant, and also attached to Oakridge Centre, I have had some pretty good dim sum consistently over the last couple of weeks. I work around the area, so this is a good getaway for lunch for me. Always packed, probably due to the fact it is in the mall, but also the fact that there is parking, that is also in the mall parking lot. The restaurant entrance is either on the front side of Cambie street, or from the parking lot. From the outside, you cannot really tell how big this place is, but it is a fair size, and if your not here by 12, you will be waiting for a table.
The service here is good, to the point when you plate gets to a mediocre point of spotty with some chicken's feet bones, or some rib bones, your plate will disappear, and be replaced by a clean one. They are pretty good at also refilling your tea pot with hot water at a timely manner.
On to the main portion of what is really important, the food, and from the multiple dishes I have had, from the sticky rice wraps, the snow pea dumplings, chickens feet, har gow, multiple congees that are offered on the menu, to the fried soy sauce rice wraps, the quality must have either gotten real good, or they brought in some high end Hong Kong chef. This is not your $2.75 dim sum, and the quality shows in each different dish on the menu. This is an ordering sheet system, the one thing with their sheet is, they have a separate Chinese and English one, no karts, and no pictures for you to look at.
They also provide some real good chili sauce at the table, do not know where they get this from, but it is tasty, and goes well with everything dim sum related. -

I've come here several times with my family and the most recent experience was not that great in terms of food. But let's cover the other details first.
Service: usually pretty fast here, no complaints. They are pretty good about refilling your teapots and changing your dirty plates.
Ambiance: Standard Chinese restaurant feel, bathrooms are pretty clean
Food: In the past I remember their food to be much more flavourful, but the most recent time it was just kind of bland. The shrimp balls didn't taste like much of anything, nor did the fried rice. The choy sum and enoki mushrooms in gravy sauce were quite tasty, however, as was the soy sauce chicken. I also liked that the shark fin soup had a sizeable piece of shark fin in it.
Overall Fortune restaurant isn't awful, but I remember it being a little better in the past. -

The food was great, but the service left a bad taste in my mouth. Given the price, I expected better service.
We arrived after 8PM on a Sunday evening and we were seated instantly. It was not terribly busy and there were plenty of waiters. Our food came quickly, however, no one bothered to ask if we wanted the glasses of water on our table refilled at any time. The waiters were also slow to clear our table and we had to chase one of the many waiters down for the cheque. Like I said, great food - but the service left a bad taste in my mouth. 2 stars... because I have experienced better service. -

My Chinese-Canadian friend brought me here for lunch. My first impression is that this restaurant is huge. And to be honest, I think all their customers are Chinese at that time, which is a good sign that they love this restaurant. Since my friend is fluent in Mandarin, he just ordered from their dim sum sheet (where you choose from a check list).
What stood out from our order is the congee with lobster and jellyfish (yup, I dare you, I will try to eat anything). No complaints, everything is good. -

While visiting Vancouver, my family met up with local relatives and friends at this restaurant for dinner (to be clear, we have no relationship with the owners). The atmosphere was lively, with a wedding reception in one half of the restaurant, and the other half packed with patrons. We were treated to a dinner of many courses, mostly typical of fancy Chinese cuisine. In particular I remember fondly the fried rice and lobster w/ noodles. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Chinese.

A decent place for some dim sum. It's conviently located inside Oakridge Centre, so parking shouldn't be a problem. If you're a regular in the world of dim sum, nothing really stands out here - they make all of your favourite dim sum classics - and the quality is better than average. Seating space is very roomy and if you want more privacy, they have private rooms too. Service is slow. Prices are high for the quality you're getting. Oh well, it's the price you pay for a restaurant inside a West Side mall.

I'm usually quite loyal to my Richmond restaurants for dim sum. But a shopping day at Oakridge with my Moms lead me to this establishment for lunch. I have been to this restaurant in the past... but no memorable experiences. This should have been a warning to me before deciding on this place for dim sum.
We arrived shortly before noon and the restaurant was not even half full. After standing at the door for what seemed an eternity... we were finally led to our table. Being that the restaurant was not full, I thought it was odd that we were seated at a table cramped beside the work station. I asked to switch tables and was obliged.
In addition to the regular dim sum fare, they had a special menu sheet. There was a special whereby you can get a "clay pot rice bowl" with choice of dim sum for $8.80. Sweet! When the pot of rice arrived at our table we realized that our elation was premature. This 'clay pot rice" was not the standard size (for those who are familiar with this dish). It was so small that we barely got 2 tiny bowls out it - hardly enough for 2 people to share. $8.80 a deal? I think NOT.
Other than the rice dish, the other dishes came out luke warm. We ended up ordering a "Malaysian Style Sponge Cake" afterwards and it took 25 mins for them to serve it to us. (yes, I timed them... haha)
Not impressed with the food or service. Reserve this restaurant choice only if you are STUCK at Oakridge and you don't want to eat at the food court or White Spot.
And even then I would consider leaving the confines of the mall to venture elsewhere. -

Fortune Restaurant has been in Oakridge Centre for as long as I can remember. It has been newly renovated so I thought I must check it out. The restaurant is very spacious with lots of elbow room to order dim sum. The waiters are fast and efficient. The place had all the normal dim sum stuff that you want. A noted different thing is that, this is one of the few places I know where you can order a whole peking duck not just at dinner, but breakfast an lunch too. The only downside if the long wait during busy hours.

BOO to Shark's Fin Soup! Don't go to restaurants that serve Shark's Fin Soup!
