Review from Katey S.
The Fort Garry is a beautiful hotel, inside and out. The lobby and the bar/lounge area are both striking rooms.
Sure, as some of the reviews said, the wallpaper isn't perfect, but the bathroom tile was pretty, the shower pressure was AWESOME, and the room was as clean as expected. Having computers in the lobby available for customer use was a nice touch, too.
The valet was very accomodating when I left something in my car, and Autumn at the front desk was extremely helpful and polite.
The pillows were way too soft for my liking, and I wish I had known the pool area was under construction and unavailable.
The price of the room was a little off-putting, but after seeing so many sketchy looking hotels in the area, paying more for a nicer place just made sense. -

The Fort Garry Hotel is a historic Grand Railway Hotel in Downtown Winnipeg, and only a block from Union Station. It was built in 1913 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, and was the tallest structure in the city when it was completed.
I haven't actually stayed here, but the last time I was here I walked through, hung out, and otherwise tried to soak up the luxurious history of this place. That hits you right at the beginning as I climbed the grand exterior staircase and entered the huge main lobby through those cool doors. Also take a look at the brass mailbox beside the elevators. It is original to the hotel, as are the mail chutes on each floor into which guests could drop their letters. It is also rumoured that a ghost sometimes inhabits Room 202 or might otherwise be seen floating down a hallway. -

Best Sunday brunch in town! You'll need a reservation for sure, but even calling on Friday should be fine. If you go once, you will go again and bring your friends...(assuming you had no friends the first time).

I stayed Tuesday night at the Fort Garry.
It's a lovely old hotel ... almost 100 years old. Apparently there are ghosts but I didn't see/hear any.
I had a cute pink room with a very comfy feather bed with five pillows (and two more in closet).
There are big heavy robes in the closet, wrapped in plastic to ensure their cleanliness.
The shower was great ... lots of pressure (surprising for such an old building) and a rainfall showerhead.
Breakfast was included in my room rate ($129). I was expecting cereal and muffins, which there were. But there was also an omelet bar . Yesterday's "Omelet of the Day" was seafood. I had a couple fried eggs ... I've never seen such yellow yolks. The chef and I had a great conversation about food as he was getting them ready. On the side I had peameal bacon and hashbrowns. Yum!
If you park your car yourself in the back, it's $12 a night. For $5 more, you can have it valet parked (which I did) which I thought was reasonable. Considering how cold it was yesterday when I was ready to go, it was nice to have my car brought around and toasty warm when I got inside.
The Forks Market (shopping and restaurants right on the river) is a five minute walk away.
My only complaint is the Internet. Most hotels these days have free WIFI or charge your room. Here you have to buy it from a third party provider and it's not very fast. -

This hotel is AMAZING and fairly reasonably-priced by US standards.
For my cousin's wedding, my family stayed in a huge suite for the weekend. It included two bedrooms, a dining room, a living room, etc. Apparently Robin Williams had "lived" in this same suite for a couple of months while filming a movie!
The wedding was held in the huge upstairs ballrooms and was gorgeous. The food was also phenomenal both at the wedding and at brunch in their restaurant the next day.
Even the hotel gym was perfect! The only thing I could possibly complain about is that you could hear loud noises such as loud music in our room. However, this usually wasn't much of a problem as our family was producing most of the noise anyways... -

for me, fort garry is quite a bit overpriced for what they are.. for this review, i'll just list the goods and bads that i saw significant.. we had the standard room with a king size bed
good
- clean
- awesome bathroom, real tiles, real tub, the shebang.. they spared no expense on it
- included breakfast buffet is above average
- ac works well
- free morning coffee was prompt delivering in the mornings
- free vouchers to the gym (located in the apt building adjacent to the hotel)
bad
- no free internet (should be standard)
- outdated decor (carpet, walls, tv especially)
- no safe (should be standard)
- no minifridge (should be standard)
the amenities listed above outside of the decor, i believe should be standard.. even a microwave.. i've been to a lot of hotels all over the world and i was a bit shocked to not even see a safe for how much is being spent at this hotel -

i only yelp when i am seriously impressed, and this morning i had to share.
i've spent more than 10 months living in hotels over the last five years all over canada, europe and asia, and this is the only hotel i have ever visited that delivers your choice of coffee or tea as a wake up call, free of charge.
i know this isnt a big thing, all hotels have coffee makers these days, but when you get in at 1am and wake up at 6am to find a silver tray (with doily!) outside your door with a beautiful spread of hot coffee and biscotti - well, it just made me so happy. all i had to do was clip a little order sheet to the door before 3am with my selection and there it was.
the hotel itself - while creepily haunted (i heard the hauntings occur on the third floor, where my elevator mysteriously stopped and NO ONE WAS THERE) - is beautiful and historic. every detail is like you stepped into another era, from the wallpaper and furniture, right down to the bathroom fixtures and tiling. after four weeks of deltas and marriotts, it was a charming change.
i won't likely be back, because, well, how often are you in winnipeg - but fort garry hotel, thank you for making this morning less awful. -

Classic architecture and old world charm abound here. If you like historic hotels, this place delivers. The hotel is centrally located and walking distance from the Forks and the rail station. The hotel is being renovated so there were some area that were off limits but it didn't detract from the stay. As a business traveler, the room amenities were a bit thin, however. My room had minimal electrical outlets and the WiFi was a bit pricey but the room rate was extremely reasonable. Overall, the room was comfortable. I highly recommend the featherbed mattress.
