Review from Paula K.
Located in the basement of the International Buddhist Progress Society, Fo Guang is the downtown core's lunchtime secret. Anyone who enjoys delicious vegetarian Asian cuisine should head here.
When you enter, you pay five dollars to the person at the door, who then hands you a ticket. Then, you go downstairs to the bright, large, and plain dining area, where one of the several volunteers will seat you. Your ticket entitles you to order one of the 20 or so dishes on the menu. Tea is provided at no extra cost. There was even an amuse bouche of crunchy, sweet pieces of tofu and sesame.
I had the veggie ham noodles, which was a reasonably sized bowl of soup with thick noodles, bok choy and other vegetables, and lots of pieces of "ham" made from soy.
Most of the items on the menu have tofu or imitation meats and are served with rice or noodles. At only five dollars, this is probably one of the best deals you will find for a quick, healthy lunch. All of the food is prepared and served by volunteers. The place is also extremely clean.
Lunch is served from Tuesdays to Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
