I recently booked flights to Japan (a few days before the earthquake) and got an awesome deal! The staff were friendly and helpful and although the woman I dealt with was brand new, she gave great service and wasn't afraid to ask her more senior co-worker for advice on how to find the best deal possible. Since I'm also buying a rail pass, I asked about options via email and she was prompt in her response.
My flights are "non-refundable" but considering all that is currently happening in Japan, I asked what my options were and again received quick and helpful responses. I won't be cancelling my trip but it's reassuring to know that if anything worse happens, I'll have recourse.
