As a die-hard foodie, I had to make the trek out to Lunenburg (about an hour out of Halifax) to eat at the only resto in Nova Scotia that was named one of the 10 best new restos in Canada by En Route (I believe it made it on the list in 2005).

Definitely worth the trip - combine this with the charm of Lunenburg and visiting the historic Bluenose, it's definitely worth your while!

Service is friendly but professional and the menu is lovely with an emphasis on local ingredients.  We came with some old friends and had a lovely dinner - my cold olive soup was beautifully presented with the right amount of zip and flavor.  The mixed green salad was average for the hubby but very fresh.  Bread service is excellent - the rosemary and onion buns were my favorite in the basket!  Nice melon sorbet as a palate cleanser.

The mains were so hard to choose from - scallops, lobster, halibut, beef and lamb - mmmmm.  It felt wrong for this Alberta-gal to eat non-Alberta beef in Canada, so I let hubby order that and sample it... was plesantly surprised by the taste and texture of the Nova Scotian beef!  I had the lamb trio with orzo - amazing.

We were all stuffed so we passed on dessert, but they left us with some mini gingersnaps, chocolate chip cookies and meringues to finish off the meal.

Prices are moderately high but reasonable for the quality (appys are $12-20, mains are about $30-38, desserts are $12).

I would definitely recommend wrapping up a day trip to Lunenburg at Fleur de Sel!

The food and service quality is excellent. The only problem is that the food portions are minuscule. I had a three course meal and I would equate the amount akin to splitting a lean cuisine between two or three people.
After the meal I had to go to a different restaurant because I was hungrier than when I had first entered the establishment.
The hors d'oeuvres sized main courses were perfectly harmonious in flavor though and the ambience was pleasant.

The clean air of Lunenburg is enough to invoke inner tranquility, and Fleur De Sel is the icing on the cake. Soft, homey interiors are all about detail and keeping things rich. Gone are the inhibitions of self-conscious design schemes-- this place lets a natural breeze flow within its decadence.

French inspired cuisine, there are lots of luxury meats and infused plates to swoon over. This is a treat of a time, as every touch is something to cherish. Poached pear sorbet? This was merely a serving to cleanse our palates before the entrees. For $16, I ordered the smoked salmon, which consisted of the resto's own house smoked salmon, radish and gherkin salad, pickled red onion, capers, deviled egg, fresh lemonand homemade Irish soda bread. Yes... all of that. Glorious to the tongue, and well worth the asking price.

Many of the menu options intrigued me, and I could not resist the rhubarb tart for dessert. Amen. If you are headed out this way, take your Lunenburg experience to its peak with this accent to serene. The energy plays off of the locale's peaceful surroundings, and its truly a dip into refreshment.

Outstanding gastronomical experience.  OK - it was a splurge on our last night in Nova Scotia, but the menu was hard to resist.

The setting was romantic and had many nice touches.  Service was first class, but totally unpretentious.

We began with a glass of champagne.  After an amuse bouche, I had a tasty house smoked salmon starter, and my wife had one of the most unusual and surprising salads I've ever seen; a watermelon carpaccio - which had super thin slices of watermelon mixed with feta, black olives, tomatoes, greens and a vinaigrette.  It may sound bizarre - but it was SUCH a great and inspired combination of flavors and top notch ingredients.

After a spearmint sorbet for a palate cleanser, we had the same entrees: butter poached lobster, served with basil, tomato and saffron aolis for dipping, and a smoked paprika potato salad.  Wow.  Nice spin on a relatively common entree for this part of the world.

For dessert: A blueberry caramel creme brulee with vanilla ice cream, and a rhubarb lemon tart with grappa scented creme anglais and a buttermilk ice cream like nothing I've ever tasted.

And all of this before the little dish of housemade lemon "gumdrops," strawberries, and banana bread, compliments of the house.

    We left full, but happy.

Without doubt, the finest restaurant in Nova Scotia! Set in picturesque Lunenburg, Fleur de Sel is a farm-to-table homage to French cooking, using local, sustainable produce. Husband and wife team of Martin & Sylvie Salvador run this seasonal seaside restaurant & inn with tremendous care and appointment. The menu changes regularly, depending on what ingredients are in season. You can usually find a foie gras dish which should never be missed! The service in this converted row house is always detailed without being omnipresent. Martin has won numerous awards for his culinary prowess. If you find yourself on the southern shore of Nova Scotia, then Fleur de Sel is a must!
