This place is great for experienced runners and novice (like me) runners alike. My 2nd visit to a Fleet Feet store and both times have been great experiences. Definitely worth the extra money to talk to trained and highly knowledgeable staff.

It's been about 4 years since I bought running shoes, and I still wear my worn out shoes for runs. With a few 5k's and summer coming up, I figure it's time to gear up.

Like most people, I usually go with style over comfort/running specs. I'll order a pair of Nike Frees cuz they look cool, or get a pair of Nike's cuz they match my shorts.

However, if you are serious about getting into a running habit, Fleet Feet will get you on a treadmill (only for about 20 seconds, don't worry) and watch your running style. They'll pull up your video on a nifty computer/ipad and split screen with what a healthy running style should look like. They'll show you your bad habits and point out your pronation in your running style. With this, they'll help you pick out the best shoe to fix this and relieve any pains this may be causing. Amazing.

My fitter was Christina. She was pretty amazing and really nice. Not to mention, she as very knowledgeable and didn't make me feel pressured into buying any shoe. She genuinely wanted the best for me. I tried on about 3 different styles of shoes and she was very patient.

I told her about some of the soreness and pain I have had and she gave me great recommendation from stretches to socks to shorts that may help. It wasn't just buying shoes, it was a learning experience.

This place is great and although a little expensive, it is good to at least check out and get evaluated so you know what shoes fit your running style best and why you're getting those pains/shin splints.

Only downside is they don't have a lot of colors of their great running shoes, but I'm now a firm believer in functionality over style.

Pretty bummed picking up my race packet for this weekend's Soldier Field Run. The second star is only because the guy who answered the phone was really nice.

The event staff was unfriendly and was rushing us even though there wasn't even a crowd. I showed my bib number to a lady who shoved a bunch of things into a booklet. When she didn't hand me a shirt, I asked about it and she pointed down a hallway. I went to that station to pick up the shirt & got the same treatment with just a finger (not THE finger! but may as well have been ;) to direct across the way to exchange my shirt size. At least this girl mustered a faint smile upon provocation!

I think what hit it home was that - upon heading for the exit - a random runner approached me and said, "do you know where we drop our raffle ticket?" I didn't even realize a raffle ticket was one of the items jammed into the booklet in the beginning.

"Have a good race!" I have to tell myself that because not a soul on the event staff did.

Maybe I have expectations, but I don't think a little positivity & friendliness is too much to ask.

The service here is what makes it such a fantastic place. You are going to plunk down a LOT of moolah for new running shoes, but when you do it you will feel confident that they did everything they could to find your best fit, so it's worth it!

The shoe consultants (I don't know what they call themselves, so that's the best I can come up with) talk to you about what you're looking for, test out your gait on a treadmill, tell you what your gait looks like and what kind of shoe would be best for it, and then you try on pairs that they pick out on the treadmill to determine which one you like best! I loved the special attention and the ability to talk to someone and get my needs met. Made me feel like a star! I walked away with amazing running shoes that I love and am already running into the ground :)

They also host a bunch of events - fun runs several times a week along the lakeshore, seminars, etc. that I definitely want to check out!

I really love Fleet Feet, and it is my favorite running store in Chicago.  It is probably because unlike others, it is purely for runners, and not multisport.  I do, however, wish that there were more of a selection of clothing and gear, as I feel this store is for a basic runner as opposed to a trail or an ultrarunner.  The staff is for the most part knowledgable, though I feel like there is a lot of turnover because it always seems like I am asking for advice from someone who needs to ask someone with more experience.  Things are clean, prices are fair.

As a new runner I have had trouble finding the right shoes for a while on my own. This is a daunting task by itself and can cost more than it should and with all the errors you make while searching and returning used shoes which is not always possible.

I was amazed when the sales guy told me I have 30 days to try the shoes and return with no questions asked. I was blown away as all shoe buying should be this good.

Not that its new running shoes but I have now run almost 20 miles since I bought it and the shoes is living up to the demand. I am no longer experiencing lower leg pain and its a pleasure to run and run more often.

The staff is very knowledgable, friendly and extremely helpful.

This place is wonderful! The staff is very informative. Pretty good inventory, the price is worth getting the right shoe. This location is primarily a running shoe store not as much a multi-sport shop. Endorse your local running store. Shop at Fleet Feet!

I went to fleet feet this weekend. Finding shoes was fine, the guy helping me was nice, but I have to say ....I spent 100 bucks on a pair of shoes then had to pay ten bucks for parking because they only validate for up to one hr. I waited an hour in line to get a shoe person to help. They did not mention this in the store otherwise I would have left or figured out a different place to park. I called them to make sure the garage person was right and the guy just said yeah too bad that's the way it is.
They should find a way to accomodate clients who make purchases at at least.  Ten dollars to park after spending 110 dollars @ their store is senseless.

I love Fleet Feet.  The staff here is very helpful, and knows their stuff.  The products that they sell are on the pricey side, but the quality is also high.  If you buy something at Fleet Feet, it will hold up for a long while.  I also appreciate Fleet Feet's support of the running community in Chicago between fun runs, clinics, "fashion shows", and chicago-land races throughout the year.

I'm writing this review after getting yelled at for spending way too much money. But you know what? When you're going into a specialty store and purchasing a specialty item from a specially trained employee who knows special things, you're going to pay a premium.

I started running a little over 1 year ago and Fleet Feet is my running store of choice. I've been to other ones but I've got this strage loyalty going on - probably because of their fabulous loyalty program that gives me a nice little perk like $15 credits when I spent over a certain amount. Some of the employees know me by name, which is only moderately embarrassing, and a few know my preferred items. Nice!

They sponsor amazing runs throughout the year and their free clinics and fun runs are worth checking out too. Over the summer they offer free hydration stations out on the lakefront path which is INCREDIBLE.

    Need I say more?

I absolutely love Fleet Feet!  I was long overdue for a new pair of running shoes and I was so excited to browse through the running shoe section.  I've been going to this Fleet Feet for the past few years now and it is always a great experience.  The staff is always friendly and willing to help.  The best thing I could have done for my feet and knees is having someone evaluate my running form and determine which shoe works best--it has worked every time.  This time around they hubby and I had the pleasure to work with Jason B. He was very friendly, energetic and knowledgeable.  What I really appreciate about customer service is when the associate comes across as genuine and has a positive attitude.  I think I drove him nuts trying to figure out what shoe i wanted to buy-- but the whole time Jason laughed at my "jokes" and was very patient.

Further, when I finalized the purchase, the person at the register couldn't be any friendlier and actually took the time to search my reward points (I know they are supposed to that but I have encountered other stores where I actually have to remind them).  I totally scored a discount...I always enjoy my visits to Fleet Feet!

OH Fleet Feet, you are my go to running store. Which says a lot since I am a bare bones, but not barefoot runner... too much pronation for that haha! I don't wear and fancy belts with bottles, or use any cool accessories. But you had me from my first pair of running shoes!

I've been going to Fleet Feet since 2005. I'd been running much longer but never had real running shoes before. I originally got fitted at the Lincoln Square store, but have tried different shoes at this location and found the staff here equally helpful. The shoes made such a difference in my enjoyment of running that I went from casual exerciser to having 3 half marathons and countless 5k's under my belt. I LOVE to run!

Slowly over the years I've upgraded my gear and always been pleased with the quality to price ratio. If you really are going to be bothered by not having a cute running outfit while being sweaty, they do have the neatest most stylish selection of running and casual athletic apparel, hands down. Wide variety of gels, blocks, bars, and drink mixes for those that need it.

The rewards program, is a good deal. I feel like it takes forever to rack up the discount, but then again I'm a minimalist and not constantly buying gear.

I've run in a few of their events and it's always well organized and fun. Haven't run any of their fun runs, but update forthcoming when I finally overcome my lone wolf ways.

I am a girl. Girls love shoes. It's science. But I bet you weren't fully aware that finding the proper running shoe really is a science. I could prattle on about how they film you running and review your stride and make appropriate suggestions and encourage you ro run outdoors with your selection of shoes. I could gush about the owner (who assisted me) Dave Zimmer and his wealth of knowledge concerning all things running and his desire to educate the average shoe buyer who looks at the pretty colored shoes. Or I could sing the praises of Fleet Feet and their philanthropic endeavors such as building a school and buying a handicapped accessible bus for albino and blind children in Africa and that a percentage of their sock sales fund this school. I could do all of the above, at great length. Or you could just go there yourself, buy the best pair of shoes you'll ever run in and help some kids in Africa. Who wouldn't want to do that?

I've been in Fleet Feet just a couple of times. The first time I went for the Turkey Trot packet pickup, and I decided to stay and peruse. I needed some new socks and a new headband that would cover my ears to keep them warm. I don't remember the woman's name who helped me, but she was great. She had all the answers to my questions and showed me several different options for what I was looking for. I never felt pressured or uncomfortable at all, and she was really friendly.

The second time I went was just last night for their Good Form Running Clinic, and it was *awesome.* Led by Trish and Jason(?), I learned so much about proper running form, and even a little bit about shoes. Plus, they taped us running in the hall and then evaluated us to help us understand what we could improve to make us better runners. The tips and tricks were so eye opening; I'm not sure I took enough notes! Luckily, Trish gave us each a reference card with the slide on it she was teaching from. And there were all different levels of runners there. So even though I was definitely the newbie of the group, I was also comforted by the fact that even the most experienced runners need some advice and insight at times. I'm going to go out and practice what they taught us and then go to another session so I can see my new video to see if I've gotten any better. I highly recommend this class to everyone, and it's free!

Fleet Feet also has a loyalty program, and I can't remember all the deets, but I do remember it's worth joining if you will be buying pretty much anything.

I've been running for almost 10 years, and sadly, I've been guilty of buying shoes based on price alone. Namely, if they're on sale, I buy them.

I've since learned the error of my way - while painful shin splints and sore feet were a dead giveaway - my visit to Fleet Feet finally set me straight.

I was lucky to be helped by Michelle, who was friendly and extremely knowledgeable in helping me figure out what issues needed to be addressed with my shoes, and then helping me find a pair that would ensure a healthy run. She took the time to find out what I was looking for, test out a few types of shoes to understand what worked best, all the while explaining the whats, hows and whys of buying a shoe fit for my needs. I couldn't have asked for better service.

Fleet Feet has a lot of running gear, and while the clothes are pricey, they do offer quality products - and when it comes to running shoes, quality is a necessity.

I attended Fleet Feet's Girl's Night Out a few Tuesdays ago and I cannot wait until they have another. This was one of the best events I've ever attended in Chicago and it was not even because of the free delicious cupcakes....it was because of the guest speaker.

Dina Bair, a WGN reporter, gave the best speech I've ever heard and I walked home from the event feeling invigorated in many ways. I don't want to give away the context of her speech, but if you ever have a chance to see her, don't miss out. As I listened to her talk, I had an epiphany of a 10 year goal I want to accomplish. And she spurred me to sign up for my first 5K (which is next weekend).

I go to "fancy" events where I get all pretty and dressed up, but at Girl's Night Out, I was in my Nike gear, sweaty from a workout and my hair in a ponytail and I enjoyed this event more than any ball. I cannot wait for Fleet Feet's next event.

I was VERY impressed with fleet feet.

A friend of mine got me into running recently and I thought I better get some serious running shoes given my past foot problems.

The staff here was SO helpful.  I think they had me try on about 9 different pairs of shoes and watched me run in each of them.  I almost felt bad for them having to help me for so long, but they assured me they didn't mind and they wanted to be sure I got the perfect shoe.

They also were able to recommend some running gear to get me started.

I left the store feeling great about all my purchases and excited to start running.

I've been running in my new shoes for several months and absolutely love them.  I don't have those aches and pains I used to get before with the 'fake' running shoes I had before.

They are serious about asking for shoes in a certain color though.  I mentioned that I hated the color of my shoes and I got directed to the sign stating don't ask for shoes in a certain color.

I am not a runner. I am a running joke. Let it be known that the only reason why I run is to burn off calories, and keep this sexy ass body of mine on the curb. I keep the running light and manageable. I won't run more then 8 miles a day, and my body seems to appreciate that.
I'll admit that nothing feels quite as good as the "runners high". :)

Anyways, if I do decide to get some new running gear, look no further then Fleet Feet Sports. The Bergdorf Goodman of Running Apparel and Accessories. This place has everything you could possibly want.

    1. Running Shoes of course

    2. Jackets, bottles, supplements, accessories, pants, shorts, socks, hats, detergent to wash your running clothes in (?)

    3. Anything and everything...I mean everything you could ever want in regards to RUNNING. and ONLY RUNNING!

The list goes on and on!

It also has some other cool things, like indoor treadmills so the experts at Fleet Feet can watch you run like a little hamster, and analyze your heel strikes and running method. Like the bionic man! The Sales Reps are also very knowledgable and know what they are talking about.  They said I looked the the Million Dollar Man on the treadmill! I think they were flirting with me! Steve Austin style baby (total lie)

You can also attend one of their many free class/seminars,and if you're a total loser who doesn't have any friends, the people of fleet feet will even go on a run with you! You can talk about why you don't have any friends on your run!  That's right! They have Fleet Feet Running groups!

I actually attended a free COLD WEATHER running seminar the other day. (insert snicker here)  I can sum up the class for you. Dress warm. End of seminar. :)

Some things I wish they had:

I wish they had Patagonia and more Nike Apparel.  A secret plus? They didn't have too much Under Armour gear.

I had to return my Brooks (after using them for a week, even on the street) and ended up going with the new Asics GT2160. Excellent shoes (probably the best I've ever worn) and once again... EXCELLENT service. Another fitting session of at least 6 different pair, and still, the guarantee remains.

I went to Fleet Feet about a year ago after hearing great things about it from others.  I went in during the day on a Tuesday, and found that it was still somewhat busy for being the middle of the work day.  I don't remember the name of the girl who helped me, but i just remember that she was a little annoyed with me and all my questions.  I didn't run on a treadmill, instead, she had me run in the store and determined I needed a neutral running shoe.  I bought the shoes and some socks and proceeded on with my life.

I ended up going to a podiatrist due to some foot issues and he immediately stated that I over pronate.  On top of that, my friend Nate (who worked at a shoe store) and my personal trainer both remarked that I pronate, and the shoes I was using (from Fleet Feet) probably weren't doing anything to help me.  At my trainer's suggestion, I bought a pair of Nike Volmeros, which I love!

Fleet Feet is hit or miss...  I personally will not be returning.

Just bought a new pair of running shoes at Fleet Feet. My shoe salesman had knowledgeable answers to my questions about arch support, durability, and running styles.

Overall a very pleasant experience, and I would recommend Fleet Feet for your running gear.

I did have just a few nits to pick. One, they ask you to take a number for shoe service during busy periods, but it isn't well-enough advertised in the store. I would have had no idea if I hadn't seen it first on Yelp. Two, I thought the merchandise prices were not prominent enough. This goes with their philosophy of fit first, but bugged me just a bit.

    I hate my feet.
Thanks to my Sasquatch parents I have long, bit, fat, wide feet. OK, maybe not as bad as I make it sound but still....I am longing for small and fragile-looking 'foundations' that would fit in snugly, fancy, expensive stilettos.
    Yup. Not gonna happen.
    Oh well.

    I love my feet.
They might not be very 'princess-like' but I can still get a pedicure et cute shoes.
And most of all - they make me run. They help me to get fast, strong, in shape and competitive. They will run a half-marathon in exactly 10 days. They push hard on the pedals of my bike, and kick hard in the water of the pool. Lake. Ocean.

So I decided to pamper them and take them for a nice fitting session at Fleet. They deserve the best.
    I gave it to them.

Chuck took care of me, and I was impressed by how thorough the whole process was. It took a solid 50 minutes and I left with the best sneakers for my little boats.
    Adidas Supernova Adapt.
    Sounds like a cool name.
    They are. Cool.

I loved my experience: questioning, fitting, trying on shoes and being recorded on camera to analyze my running. Top notch. I found gear that won't help me break records but still....love 'em.

    I also bought Body Glide.
    For chafing, you creeps.

Wish me luck for the 12th, and go to Fleet for all your feet needs!
(They should totally hire me as a marketing manager...just sayin'...)

Fleet Feet is awesome.  What can I say. I love the fact that you have runners working there that can relate to any of your questions or concerns.

Darren fitted my husband and I on two different shopping sessions.  He was extremely knowledgeable and personable.  Much like everyone else's reviews I got the normal treatment, he asked questions, watched me run and brought out a couple of pairs for me to choose from.  I had a really hard time getting over the fact that running shoes won't be the most stylish shoes.  I just wished they had a larger selection of color choices in the particular brand/style.  I say this as after I bought the shoes, I went online and found a few other color choices :(

The clothing can be quite expensive, but they are really the only running store in the area that carries running specific items like, GU, running visors, glide (anti-chafe) and other necessary race gear.

They are also a huge sponsor of many of the races in town.  They have many running clubs and events, however, with kids it makes it hard to attend any of those events :(  I really did like the post-race engraving that they did for the Rock N' Roll half marathon.

Everyone in my family has been to Fleet Feet, including my parents who don't even live in Chicago.  There's not much to add to what other people have said:
    -The staff is incredibly nice
-The selection of shoes are great
-They actually analyze how you run and help you choose an appropriate shoe at no additional cost
-The additional equipment they sell is all of great quality
    -The location is easily accessible
-The only downside IMO is in general things here are pricy.  This however is a function of the quality of the products and staff assistance.  Well worth the additional cost

Will definitely keep coming back :).

Every once in a while the best value isn't the best price.

I'll admit that I'm a bargain shopper; I am diligent about finding the best price after I've identified what I need. I'll also admit that when I walked into Fleet Feet, I had a strong idea of what shoe I needed and knew exactly where to find it cheaper. I fully intended to quickly try them on and buy my shoes from the online retailer, but things didn't exactly work out that way.

I was fortunate to have a short wait for a shoe person; if you're used to walking into a store, buying a running shoe because it's cute, cool or brand new, this is not that kind of a store. Being properly fit for a shoe, especially one you'll be using for high impact activities, is immensely important; the wrong shoes can be the source of a lot of needless pain and discomfort.

When my number was called, I explained that I had been fit at FF before, but since my original fitting I started wearing prescription orthotics, which was why my podiatrist was recommending a neutral shoe. The guy I worked with was great; we discussed my running routine and he brought me the shoes my podiatrist recommended along with a few other neutral shoes to compare them against. He examined the fit, noting that he disagreed with the size I said I needed (he was right - I had told him a 1/2 size too small), and had me run in each pair on the treadmill to see what fit best. I ended up liking the pair recommended by my doctor, but was glad I tested out other options.

When I was done he asked if I had interest in having a a female associate fit me for a sports bra. I was glad I decided to get fit; the associate that helped me was very knowledgeable. I told her what sports bra features I liked and didn't; she measured me, noted which bras ran big and small, which ones were best for high impact activities, the ones best suited for my body type, and what to look for in terms of correct fit. This was definitely the most informed sports bra purchase I've made.

I may have been able to get both of my purchases a bit cheaper elsewhere, but I felt the time, attention and expertise I received was the best value for my money.

TIP: The store has a points program and gives a discount to CARA members.

TIP: If you're happy with you current shoes, they keep the data stored in their computer so you don't have to wait in line when it's time for a new pair of shoes. If you're unhappy with the fit of your shoes, they have a 30 day return policy (provided the shoes are still in good condition).

Oh Fleet Feet, where would I be with out you! Fleet Feet offers the best apparel but what keeps me coming back is the awesome staff and great events. I tried out their Chick's Night run (Tuesday's at 6:30 *Plug*) and have been going for a year and a half now. They offer soooo many free events and the staff is always super helpful with everything from race advice, shoe fittings and safety tips.
Definitely a must if you run in Chicago!

This time is different. It's not about the number on the scale. It's not about whether or not designer jeans will ever fit me. I. Don't. Care.

What I do care about is how I feel and god help me going into a new careers, as a school counselor, with this low energy, extra weight, heavy heart dragging me down. Ain't no way. Ain't no how.

I have a LOT of runners in my family. Specifically, my in-laws. My husband has run the Chicago Marathon four times (right, honey?), all of which were with his dad, who has MS.

Can you feel the inspiration coming on? So you see, when I said, "I want to do a 5K" the heavens opened up and down came the GU. If you're a runner, you know that that schnast is.

Before embarking, I needed the right equipment, as my worn out New Balance were wonderfully pink they were also horribly treadbare.

Off to Fleet Feet. This location is closest to us, so we zipped in, quickly figured out we needed a number, sat down with charming gent (Brent, Brian, David, Devin? Sigh) who upon hearing my couch-to-5K tale treated me with as much respect as anyone avid. I was an elephant among gazelles from the exterior, but I fell in quite nicely with this pack thanks to the kind and careful service.

It could have gone an entirely different direction, and I don't doubt some have left in tears, but instead I left even more empowered. Chug-a, chug-a, chug-a goes this 5K freight train!

After my last not so great experience at Fleet Feet Sports, I corresponded with the owner, Dave Zimmer, who was very interested in hearing my feedback.

So I went back a few months later for new shoes, and had an entirely different experience. The staff was absolutely fantastic. I got my shoes, and was introduced to a new very cool line of running clothes. I usually cannot spend too much time in Fleet Feet, or it will drain my bank account. For any running enthusiast, this is like a toy store.

I will be back this summer as I restock on running essentials!

I went to Fleet Feet looking for a specific pair of shoes I was fitted for a few months back at another shoe shop.  The girl took one look at my feet and asked me if I was sure those were the shoes I wanted.  I am, I told her and she said she'd sell me the shoes if I really wanted them but suggested that I try on some other shoes that might fit me better.

Five minutes later, I walked off in a better fitting shoe at half the cost of what I was prepared to spend.

Great service + Great bargain = 5 stars.

I had a good run today, and I thought "I should write that review for Fleet Feet..."

Rewind a few pant sizes ago and there I was deciding that I wanted to start running, but my Chucks just wouldn't cut it. I was put into a pair of motion control shoes by another running store for the horrible overpronation of my feet, and those worked out for awhile and kept me from injuring myself. They worked so much that I bought two pairs!

Fast forward to a couple months ago and aforementioned pant-size-droppage, I had worn out the first pair and started wearing the second, but my runs ended in more pain than ever.

After hearing good things about Fleet Feet I decided to stop in to see if they could recommend anything better than what I was working with. I'll admit it's a little intimidating when you walk in, especially if it's busy and you have to take a number to be fitted for shoes. But I was greeted, got a number, and while waiting looked around the store at all the shiny running stuff they had, oh my! I'm pretty sure if I was rich I'd come out of here with shopping bags like the ladies on Rodeo Drive.

I came in here late on a busy Friday night, and my shoe fit specialist was Alison. She was great. I probably tried on 8-9 pairs of shoes, and she recorded my feet on the treadmill in each. One of the last pairs I tried were the stability New Balance 940's--supportive but super cushion-y and light, perfect for me.

Agreed that most of their stuff is kinda expensive (I spent almost $120 for the shoes), but I'm running pain free. Thanks Fleet Feet!

I can't believe how easy this shopping experience was!

I was recommended to Fleet Feet by my physical therapist after a torn ligament and just effed up feet in general-I was told I needed better running shoes and Nike Shox were sh*t.

My salesperson, Malachi (Children of the Corn! I know, right!) was so nice, he measured my stinky feet (without sneering) and filmed a gait analysis and then brought out three pairs for me to try. He gave me his opinion on all three (and I checked the prices while he wasn't looking and he totally wasn't pushing the most expensive pair!). I ended up with a new pair of running shoes that fit so nicely! Who knew I needed a bigger toe-box! (huh huh huh, toe-box) and though the colors are absolutely hideous and I feel a little bit like the blue Power Ranger, I have to admit they feel great!

PS, they validate for the Pipers Alley garage.

Fleet Feet - Piper's Alley is an amazing running store.  Not only do they have every running shoe you would ever want to try, but they have the largest selection of running clothes and accessories I have ever seen in one store.

You can really get everything you need here from compression socks to sports beans.  And they also have organized runs from the store.  I took part in one of the runs when I was visiting, and it was a lot of fun.

If you're a runner in the Chicagoland area, you have to check this place out!

From a customer service standpoint they're pretty good. I've mostly had positive experiences here and find most of the sales staff knowledgeable.

I went in today looking for new running shoes (I'm an avid runner logging 35-45 miles per week) and they didn't have a size 7.5 in Mens. The sale Associate, who was very friendly and helpful, stated that because it's an "uncommon" size, they don't keep it in stock.

I was disappointed!!! Where else do you go for running gear, no matter the size, than a SPECIALTY running store?!?!?! Why can I find these sizes at Nordstrom, Hanigs, etc etc... but not at Fleet Feet?!?!!!

The sale associate did offer me a comparable women's shoe which would have been fine save for the color so I elected to go home and buy them on http://zappos.com.

In all, I suppose if you have "normal" sized feet, or you need other running gear (except for smalls... I didn't notice a lot of men's small clothing either) then this is your place to go, but if you truly are a "special" size, then I suggest searching online or elsewhere. Fleet Feet is not a neighborhood, do-what's-right, take care of all customer's store. They're a HUGE chain of small stores, that like all others cater to what sells the most and moves the fastest, and clearly that's NOT Men's size 7.5 shoes!

A Negative-Positive Experience In Two Parts

I had never been professionally fit for shoes before, but have a big event coming up that necessitated that I go here.  I worked with a fantastic guy named Jamie.  We decided on a pair that seemed to work best for me, and I took them home and "test drove" them about 8 miles, and ended up with the WORST deep-tissue slug-like blisters I have ever had in my life.
So I took them back and worked with another guy, and we decided on another pair.  I am a bit weary (and tender) to give these another shot.  But more so, I really appreciate how this is the type of store that CARES about you as an individual and your needs, and, not to mention will take back essentially "used shoes".
Work with them - great advice and a huge selection.  I can't say you won't go wrong, because I certainly did, but it isn't something that won't be corrected.

    UPDATE 6/20
I have about 100 miles on my new sneaks and all is well!

Think of it as http://Match.com or eHarmony- for your feet.  All these years of going through the wrong pairs of shoes... leaving you tired, hopeless, in need of some TLC.  Face it.  You're in desperate need of a shoe that fits you, compliments you, and will commit to you.  Want to end your misery?  Meet Fleet Feet.

    How does the process work?
Well, you know what you're looking for and the employees know what you need.  How do they know this?  Well, they watch you run with your current pair of gym shoes.  Ok, so you might look weird running in a store, but take comfort in knowing that your sole-mate (oh yah, clever am I) is just about 15 minutes away.  After a quick run, they'll give you a brief run-down (Oh yah, AGAIN!) of your running gait and offer a couple shoe recommendations.  They'll then make you run again with your potential matches, observe, and then ask you how they feel.  Like one?  Claim it as yours.  Like them all?  Hey, we're talking shoes here... go ahead and indulge.

Just remember you need a new pair every 300-500 miles.

One more thing.  Those of you shallow types who only go for the best-looking... they don't allow any of that nonsense here.

One last thing.  They engrave your marathon medal for free.

I had bought my last pair of shoes at a similar store back in Detroit, but Fleet Feet were a LOT better.  I am not a "runner" but I am working at becoming more of one.  I was finding I was getting shin splints still with my previously recommended Nike pair.  Not to mention the air pockets were starting to squeak each time I stepped.  Well, I went into FF and was very happy.  The salesman was really nice and not only asked me about my shoe habits but got more information on my life to help with the process.  Even though they were crowded (Tuesday night Women's Fun Run), he took the time to explain everything to me and really got me into a good pair of NB.  My next run after putting on the new shoes was completely pain free!

A good side note was that the kid next to me was explaining what he was mostly doing with his shoes.  The clerk determined that the type of shoe he needed was not one they carried.  However, the clerk took the time to explain to his mom what to look for and how to find them.  Even while she took notes.  Knowing that they weren't buying shoes that day from them, FF took the time to make sure they were happy period!  I don't know about that kid and his mom, but I am going to be going back to FF a lot in the future!

eh, the quality of the shoes was good, as was the fit.  They did that whole thing where I run on a treadmill and play it back for me and talk about my gait and pick the shoe accordingly.  I had a fitting done at Universal Sole last year, so it was no big deal.

The staff was sort of snide and rude, and acted as if my questions were very stupid.  You should never ever find yourself in a position of buying a product and having sales associates roll their eyes at you.  I was on the receiving end of a total of three eyerolls from two different sales associates during my trip to Fleet Feet.

I'm surprised at all the good reviews for customer service Fleet Feet has, since two of the other runners in my group felt the same way about the service.  But the other runners in my group rave about Fleet Feet and thought the service was great, so I guess it depends on the salesperson.

Crappy service really can make the difference in your buying experience, especially when you're going to a small store.  When you drop a chunk of cash on something, you should feel excited about this new, shiny, pretty thing you have.  Rude service just makes you feel like your wallet was raped, and that's how I felt when I left Fleet Feet, even though I spent the same amount of money as I did at Universal Sole.

I am relatively new to the running game, so I came into this specialty running store wearing my current pair of Adidas running shoes to see if should go ahead and upgrade to a nicer fancy pair, as well as buy a Nike+ Apple accessory, a Nike+ pouch for my Adidas shoes, some GU energy gel packs, and maybe some nice running shorts or Dri-Fit shirts.  Now mind you, I intentionally arrived at the store on a Tuesday afternoon at around 230 or 3pm, when the store was relatively quiet, so I could hopefully get some good service and attention without feeling rushed.

To my dismay, I was completely ignored while browsing the store for quite some time, and then when I saw a sales guy approach some ladies who had not even taken a number yet, I decided to go up to the front register to ask for some sales assistance in fitting a shoe for me.  They told me to hold on, and grab a number, and when a sales guy finally came to me to "help," he knew nothing about the Nike+ Apple accessory, and he and another salesman actually seemed completely apathetic and indifferent toward me.

When I told them I needed to get the shoes and stuff to train for a very important physical fitness exam coming up (and that I needed to achieve a 7-8 minute mile ASAP), they practically scoffed at my lack of running knowledge and seemed entirely disinterested in selling me any shoes at all, let alone accessories or apparel.  I tried to persist in asking more questions like, "How long will it take to fit me for a shoe?" or "Do you think it would be helpful to replace my current pair of adidas shoes that I randomly bought super-cheap online without doing any research?" to see if either of the two salesmen would even feign to suggest I try out their specialized fitting process there.  Instead, they just shrugged their shoulders and said it's up to you if you feel your current shoes are uncomfortable, because "you're NOT going to be running long-distance marathons in those shoes anyway."

Funny, because I came in wearing my running shorts underneath my jeans thinking I was going to try on a pair or two of nice running shoes and be suckered into thinking they improve my performance.  Instead I ran into two snooty salesmen who dismissively just motioned toward where the GU energy packets are, even though I had questions about those also.  Suffice it to say, I was somewhat appalled and furious at the lack of sincerity or guidance coming from these guys, but I hid my emotions pretty well as I walked over to check out the GU packs.

An elderly, more professional-looking salesman did come right over to ask if I needed any assistance with the GU packs, and he explained the differences between the competing kinds for me for a good 5-10 minutes at least, so that was the one positive I got out of the entire experience.  In the end, I was sorely disillusioned by the quality of customer service (or complete lack thereof) that I put the Nike+ accessory back on the shelf and just bought the small $10 pouch for it, and 7 packs of GU at $1.25 each, and jetted over to Best Buy near my house to buy the Nike+ Apple accessory over there instead.  The Best Buy salespeople might not know jack about their products, but at least they're trying to sell you something there.

Maybe it had something to do with my appearance - I was wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt, with a backpack on, along with my running shoes.  I guess that doesn't qualify as running gear or I don't look like a serious runner to them (maybe I just look like a punk kid off the street).  Or maybe it has something to do with the more upscale neighborhood (Old Town) the store is located in, where rich & wealthy of Gold Coast and Lincoln Park tend to frequently shop.  I guess I have to come fully decked out in my running gear (complete with headband) or in a nice suave-looking button-down and blazer to shop here and get any attention.

In summary, I felt so insulted and frustrated coming out of there 20 minutes after I arrived, and it seemed that I was wasting the salespeople's time and they could not wait to push me out of their "happy, beautiful" little store as quickly as possible.  Good riddance, never again!

EDIT:  I cracked and went back to this store, for reasons undisclosed...  twice!  Each time, I was fitted for damn nice running shoes by the same Asian dude (I forgot his name, but I think his name was Dan), and my knee tendinitis/IT band syndrome pain is gone and I swear by "SuperFeet" insoles and foam rollers, even though they're hella pricey.  Check out this Old Town location, fo' sure, because the other location I visited was mad small.

This store is a must for any runner!  Their running clothes are very overpriced so I prefer to get mine at the Nike outlet, but I always buy my running shoes here. The staff is so helpful and they really know their stuff. They fit you for a shoe that is right for your foot and watch to run to make sure it's perfect.  It is also a great source of information for runners to find out about upcoming races and training clinics.

Edit 11/17/2006: I've always loved Fleet Feet (4 star rating), but am adding an extra star after my experience today.  I went in looking for some shoes for my kickboxing classes because my running shoes were getting a bit too heavy.  The service as usual was amazing. My sales associate was Brandon and I was blown away by his knowledge and helpfulness. I can't imagine going anywhere else to buy sneakers.
