Probably the best burgers in the north west! there i said it!! and let me tell you why..

    1. Simple
    2. they hand make their own patties (that's gangster right there!!)
    3. Simple
    4. Choose your own toppings (no charge) Grilled onions, mushrooms, mustard, mayo, ketchup, A1 sauce, hot sauce, pickles, Jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, ... the list goes on..
    5. simple
    6. two kinds of fries, 5 guys regular or Cajun. mmm
    7. Free peanuts while you wait. (self serve)
    8. simple
    9. free refills on sodas
    10. SIMPLE!!

There's no doubt about it., 5 guys burgers have made something so "simple" to be so incredibly tasty!

I ordered the regular bacon cheeseburger which comes with 2 decent size patties and a warm toasted bun. The cool part is that the toppings are free of charge and as many as i want. so me being a simple guy i got: mayo, ketchup, grilled onion and mushrooms. and let me tell you when i took my first bite i thought to myself how can something so "simple" and straight forward pack such a flavor punch in my mouth!?!?!?! (notice how i said the word "simple 8 times?!) My mind is still blown away.. there's no secret sauce or anything. just plain condiments that work well with the patty that they make!!... there u go! it must be the patty!...hmmm... its gotta be the patty... Damn u life's mysteries!! ..

If your ever in the West Vancouver area, and you have an hankering for  some sexy hamburgers., give these guys a try! you'll probably be scratching your head like i am still... :/

Cafeteria style burger joint.  AYCE peanuts.  If you order the "regular" burger, get a lot of napkins, it will be messy.  They are double patties, unless you order the "junior" version.

    Was it good?  Yes

    Was it great? No

For burger places like these (Vera's included) I have to put a perspective on it.  That perspective is that it is there to fill a need, and that need is hunger.  Does it fill that need? Yes, by all means.

Was it a true "dining experience"? Not even close.

Like I said before.  This place serves a purpose and it does it well.

Guess what Vera? Your meat really can be beat!

For people that know and crave the In-n-out burger like I do, Five Guys is a decent alternative. They have a simple burger centric, no nonsense menu that cuts to the chase - burger, burger and more burgers. Sure there are a few other things on the menu but Five Guys seem to abide by the rule, do one thing, and do that one thing very well.

Five Guys is a fast-ish food burger joint. They don't win awards for their decor but they are affective where it counts. All the toppings are free and fresh, crispy lettuce, fresh tomato and onions, hand made patties.

The one nice surprise is their fries, delicious! For these fries I had to add an exception to my "no french fry eating in 2011" rule, it was a well worth it. If you are eating with someone usually one regular fries will be enough, they load the cup in the bag full, then dump a huge amount of fries in the bag on top, just the right amount for two people.

For the In-n-out fans out there, these guys come very close but I find In-n-out to have the edge on the burgers (and they way they are packaged) while Five Guys is a clear winner with fries.

While 5 Guys can get away with it in Canada or back east, I can't imagine that most people from California don't find it to be a total knock off of In-n-out.  Now, it tastes absolutely nothing like In-n-out, but the decor and simple menu is the same.  And while I can't really come down on an establishment for having a simple menu of burgers and fries, I can for them very obviously copying the signature in-n-out look.  They lost one star for that alone (should lose more really).

I went there for the first time today and my stomach still hurts!  The fries are decent and the burgers just so so.  But they are majorly overpriced!!!  $20 for two people at a "simple burger joint?"  I think not.  Part of their gimmick is that all the toppings are free.  Um, FREE? haha.  Okay.  You're paying for the toppings in the price of everything else.  These simply aren't fast food prices.

One thing to note is that the mushrooms are extremely slimy.

The lady taking the order was very friendly though.  I'm pretty sure she called me every endearing term in the book during my order.  E.g., "love, dear, sweetie, etc.."   There is also a british gentlemen there who was very friendly.  But the rest of them were a bunch of teenage boys with attitude.

So not overly impressed.  I'd much rather go pretty much anywhere else.  I'm giving them 2 stars because the fries were decent, but WAY overpriced!

It also never fails to amaze me that in BC (the green province) that places can be so wasteful.  Regardless of whether you're eating there or taking it to go, you're getting a large bag.

I never factor in kids into my reviews, but I'll say this probably isn't a place for kids.  Not because they aren't welcome, but I saw 3 families and all the children looked pretty unhappy.  The fries are probably a bit much for them and the burgers are as well.  I just don't see this as kid friendly food.  One of the kids was even eating a thing of yogurt instead.

This is an odd choice of location as well and I have to say, I don't see it staying there for long after the newness runs it's course and everybody has given it a try.  It might do okay somewhere else, like near a college/university, where boys can order "the works" to feel like a "man."

They do a decent job with their burgers and fries here.  Just a caveat that the regular burger is two patties and the Small burger is the one with a single patty.

I ordered the single with all of the free toppings that were included and the service was fast.  They cook the burger when ordered so it takes a bit.

The fries were crispy and not too greasy, but a little too salty for my taste.

All in all this is a decent option in West Vancouver for burgers.  Still think Vera's is slightly better.

Pretty darn good burger for a reasonable price.  I'm a fan!

I was in the 'hood and decided to try this place after my man friend's raving review.  Unlike Vera's who charges for their extra toppings, this place lets you pile it on as much or as little (for the purists) as you please.  I like toppings, so added the fried mushrooms, fried onions and some tomatoes and lettuce to my "little" bacon cheese burger.  It was delightful.  And not overly greasy.

I split the Cajun fries with my cousin, which came as a huge portion, so good thing we shared.  The spice was pretty kickin', and there may have been a bit too much seasoning for my taste, but overall, pretty good.  I didn't find them soggy, as others have.

The service was friendly, but the decor is a little eye-jarring.  I would have appreciated reusable containers when eating in, as well.  There's no need to stick it all in a paper bag with a paper drink cup if you aren't getting the order to go.

Whoa - I was completely blown away.

But first, let's get this out of the way: fries are tasty, a myriad of toppings available for your burger free of charge, peanuts while you wait for your bespoke burger, peculiar décor, blah blah blah.

    On to the burger.

Two patties is standard procedure at Five Guys; a 'little burger' is one patty.  You're not really only getting one, are you?

The patties are incredible.  They are always piping hot, maintain a perfect balance of texture that just verges on crumbling but always stays together.  I love that.  Seasoning is minimal (if my suspicions prove correct, there is probably no seasoning in the patty, just sirloin).  The taste and texture are near perfect, barely a half-step behind Moderne Burger for quality.  If you have a soul, you will order two patties.  Your soul will sing to the heavens in praise and thanks for not merely ordering the single.

Bun is delightful.  Soft, delicious, covered in sesame seeds, and the perfect size.  Keeps the juices in and does not get soggy (see note below).  One of the better bun recipes I've tasted.  Complements the beef perfectly.

Five Guys have clearly put a lot of thought into the process and spent a lot of time refining and perfecting the burger.  The result and success speaks for itself.  Superb stuff.

    END OF REVIEW

    **************************************************

Finally, a rant: too often Yelpers waddle into a burger joint, order a hamburger and add ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, chipotle, hot sauce, barbecue sauce, Sriracha, cheddar, mozzarella, gouda, swiss, lettuce, tomato, green pepper, red pepper, mushrooms, pickles, raw onion, fried onion, black olive, green olive, bok choy, celery, carrots, egg, bacon, extra pepper, extra salt, and foie gras and then proceed to complain, "it was too messy and I couldn't taste the burger!"  Please, keep your burger simple and it will be easier to enjoy.

When trying for the first time, I always get the same ingredients (as little sugar as possible, so the taste of the bun and patty aren't distorted; very few condiments so mess is kept to a minimum).  Always: lettuce, tomato, raw onion, mustard, mayo.  That's it.  Try it one day.  If you like it and want to go back, ruin it with a turducken on top or whatever.  But if you want an accurate representation of what the burger tastes like, keep it simple.

    Okay, I'm done.

My friends from Seattle have always gushed Five Guys to me, but I never had a chance to try it out.  Fortunately, they now have this location in Park Royal for those of us unable to make the 3h trek down to the Space Needle.

The actual place was a bit tricky to find, as it is not actually IN the mall, but in a satellite building in the middle of the parking lot, in the S half of the mall.

The inside was covered in red and white tiles.  The furniture consists of wood and metal chairs, and red tables.  There's a pile of peanuts, which you are free to load up on.  Great to have while waiting for your friends to show up.

There are only 2 types of burgers.  Hey, it's simple, and it works.  In-N-Out in California comes to mind.

Their fries are deadly awesome.  They're not dry, but you can actually taste the potato inside.  I read somewhere that they fry the fries twice to lock in the flavour, but couldn't verify directly.

The combo is served in paper bags, and the burger comes wrapped in foil.

My only complaint: the price.  You can easily get close to $15 if you get a burger, fries, and drinks.  If the same combo was some $8, I'd be back all the time.  As a result, I have only eaten here once.  The drive is another issue.

I definitely look forward to the day they open a more central location in Vancouver or Richmond.

You'll never get me to say anything is better than In-N-Out. But we finally have a contender for "close" when it comes to quality service, fresh ingredients and value. I'm just glad this place is located in West Van where I can't get to it with ease.

Five Guys has awesome burgers. I ordered the cheeseburger that came with two patties and it was certainly filling. I didn't order the fries but my buddy did and they were nothing to rave about. Kind of soggy but at least a generous amount was given. Two things that really stood out for me and I want a number of local burger places to read this.

    1) ALL TOPPINGS WERE FREE! I was not charged for grilled onions or mushrooms or extra sauce. It was all free of charge. It's not hard to do. If you're charging extra for anything other than bacon or cheese you suck.

    2) FREE REFILLS!!! Three extra cents of sugar water consumed did not cost me a dime. Pop should always be refillable and once again if you're a business that charges for it you suck.

I really really enjoyed my burger. It was fantastic and made more enjoyable because I wasn't nickled and dimed to death. I will be back and look forward to it. My only thing might be to ease up on the reviews posted on every square inch of the place. We get it.  People like you. You had me at free toppings anyways...................

Loved it. Move over, Vera - you've got competition. In fact, I haven't been back to Vera's since I discovered 5 Guys; it's that good. Juicy, delicious, huge selection of FREE toppings, a Coca-Cola joint (believe me, this matters) .. just be careful when ordering. Don't get trapped into thinking you need a large fries; the small fries will feed an army. They're really good, though. You just couldn't possibly eat them all yourself.

Also: the name of the place is hilarious. I'm having 5 Guys for dinner!

Great traditional burgers. They are grilled to order with whatever you want on them. Portions can be normal or huge.

Normal portion is the 'little' hamburger. The regular burger is two patties and way too much food for me.

Also 1 large fries is good for about 2-3 people.

These are the best burgers on the North Shore for sure.

Okay so I heard a lot about this place... being a possible In-n-out destroyer. I will say this. The burgers were good. Damn Good! But can it beat a double double animal style? Nope! Not even close!!!  But don't take this as a complaint, I really did enjoy the burger I had.

It was a regular burger with the normal topings, Lettuce, Tomato, Cheese, Raw Onions, Pickles and Mustard. I had a hard time for some reason getting my order taken down properly. It was as if the guy at the cashier was deaf or something but being open minded, i just ignored it. I don't come to places like this for the service (although nice service is a plus).

Many of my friends warned me of the fries. If you go there, order the small. As you may have already read below, after filling the cup with the fries, they add more into your bag after. Some may think it's sloppy, I however find it cheeky cool.

And yes the burger was quite good. MUCH MUCH better than that overrated place I can't stand to look at, Fatburger. I wish the prices were cheaper at Five Guys but over all, for what I got, I can't complain.

Try em out, you won't be disappointed!

Definitely happy I checked out this Canadian version of the gimmicky US burger chain.  With something as simple as burger and fries you need to take certain steps to stand out from the crowd.

Decided to go for the smaller "one patty" burger, the patties were pretty thin so if you're looking for meat, best to go for the double burger (that seemed to be what most people were getting).

I got "the works"...which actually isn't the works but it's all of the common toppings.  It seemed to be a good starting point for me, and I added some jalapenos which made my burger pretty much close to perfect (a "Mike" burger if i was at Harveys...which i also like....).

While you wait you can grab some free peanuts.  The large fries were enough to feed me, my wife, and probably another person....

I think my favourite part of the meal were the abundance of toppings.  I also like the free pop re-fills.  It was nice to not be nickel and dimed for a few extras, just building it in to the upfront price was a refreshing change for a fast food place.

The fries were good, but not the best I've had.  I had high expectations with the bags of potatos stacked all around these restaurant (I figured if they were showing off the potato, they must make THE BEST fries....)

Anyways i will return to Five Guys if I'm on the North Shore and am in the mood for a burger.

Quickly becoming a burger aficionado, this place lived up to the expectations I had.

Greasy spoon/hamburger joint.  A lot a great options for the burger and a couple of sizes.  Staff were really friendly and helpful.  I would definitely go back, but will have to plan the trek to Park Royal.  Not the closest place and you do want to avoid Lions Gate traffic.

Not as cheap as In and Out Burger, but still pretty tasty and I will be back!

    * Lost in translation *

I've heard from people down in the States that Five Guys was the be all and end all of burgers.  So I had to check it out.

I think something was lost in translation as it crossed the border.

    Some things translated just fine:

    - Yes, there are the free peanuts.

    - Yes, they have many free toppings.

    - Yes, there are unlimited drink refills.

    - Yes, they give very large portions.

    Some things didn't:

    - They have several signs touting the "best $5 burger", etc., etc.  But a regular burger is $7.  Huh?!?!?!  Oh - the $5 is US pricing at US stores.  I understand currency fluctuations and local sourcing can create different prices - but don't rub our face in it and put up the quotes from the States about the lovely $5 burger.  (For $5 here you only get the "little" - unlike in the U.S. locations.)

    - The fries were plentiful, but soggy.  And perhaps a good expression to explain them would be, "Would you like some fries with your salt?"  Wow.  I have never had such salty fries in my entire life!

    - People don't throw the peanut shells on the floor in Canada - somehow it just doesn't give the same feel when you have to carefully shell the nuts and keep things "Canadianly" clean.

    - And perhaps the biggest let down - the burger itself.  It was a bit overcooked.  Really wasn't juicy at all.  Boo!

Perhaps I caught them on a bad day.  But somehow I think they may be expanding too quickly and not keeping the same standards as in the original locations - something is getting lost in translation!

    So, whats the hype?!
I have never heard of this place until my good friend started raving about it and had to try it out.
i normally stay away from red meat, but a good burger should be a very justifiable reason to forget the rule.
there were some real good..but also some bad...

presentation was definitely 5 yelp stars.  it looked GOOD.  it was piled high with all the toppings i wanted! I chose to go with the bacon burger stacked with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, green peppers and mustard.  SUPER cool that all toppings are free!!

my friend ended up getting the bacon cheeseburger with ALL the toppings..(for those who have gone here, yes, he got both the top and bottom lines! yikes!)

we shared a large cup of cajun fries..spicy goodness..no need for ketchup! another 5 yelp stars for this!

    the bad?
the bun wasn't toasted so it turned out being quite soggy with all the fixin's in the burger.
the burger itself..was good-but i would have to say i have had better ones at other places...mmm, im remembering a very yummy one i had at cactus club....

So where do I decide to eat my last HST-free meal in Vancouver?  Well, perfect day to trek out across the bridge to Five Guys!

This place has been on my places to go list since it opened here - I love Canada (Happy Canada Day!) but I secretly love a lot of American things.

Not as good as my In-N-Out burgers, but these are now my favorite burgers in Vancouver that won't break the bank!  Totally customizable burger with an amazing selection of toppings:
    - mushrooms - check
    - jalapenos - check
    - onions - well, you can get grilled or raw - check!

The "little" burgers with one patty are plenty for me, but hubby went with the regular 2 patty burgers.  Nicely grilled sesame bun and fries are HUGE.  Seriously trust the reviews - we shared a large and still had a ton of leftovers!  Fries could be a bit crispier but I like the thick-cut.

Unlimited pop refills, complimentary peanuts, and little details like numbering your burgers and putting them in the foil so they come out top first when they're unwrapped - priceless!  Solid 5 stars.

What does this place have that the Costco Food Court doesn't have? Oh, right. Very, very high prices. Other than that, what's the attraction?

The burgers are "home made"? Oh, please. I make home made burgers. They taste great. 5 Guys? They're OK. Anything produced for a franchised burger chain is ersatz, not home-made. It's like fibreglass stone cladding for your '60s bungalow. They're not worth the cost.

The fries, because they leave the bags of potatoes stacked all over the place? Umm, no. You can select the additional condiments, for no "additional" cost? Harvey's, which used to be a strong Canadian brand, with a much, much better design sense for a burger joint, has been doing that for over 30 years.

So, seriously, what's the attraction? I think that people feel "special" because the place looks like a car wash. Honestly, I would rather have a burger at Costco than spend that kind of money. At least I understand why Costco "decorates" the way that they do.

The burger I had at Five Guys was the freshest tasting hamburger I have ever had.  It does take longer to get your food as it is cook from raw but once your number is called this tasty food is memorable. The french fries are cooked in peanut oil and the beef is from Alberta - the friendly  person behind the counter told me that its never frozen.

The only con was that it is a little expensive- but worth it!  Is In-n-out better?  Looking forward to trying them when I visit California.

Free toppings is great! I hate paying a lot for a burger and then being nickeled and dimed for the toppings. Yesterday I was craving a burger and had no idea where in the Ambleside area I could get one....so I checked Yelp! Duh.
Five Guys is just down the road in Park Royal so off I went. I'm impressed. I got the "everything" option and my bacon cheesebburger was juicey, messy and darned good. The fries were fresh and even with the Cajun seasoning were not too salty.

The bottom line: I will go back!!

A little taste of America in our own backyard! I fell in love with this place when I went to school in the Northeast (the restaurant originated near Washington DC) and I can't remember the last time I was so happy to see an American franchise expand into our city.

The burgers here are quick, cheap, and delicious, with free toppings to boot: mushrooms, onions, lettuce, ketchup, hot sauce, A1 sauce... you name it, they got it. Free refills on drinks, crispy fries served in big brown paper bags, and endless/complimentary peanuts? Other than Vera's, this might be the only legitimate burger joint in the city... here's to hoping they open more restaurants in Vancouver!

I knew nothing of this American franchise until I happened to come across it going to the mall one evening. The atmosphere is instantly striking with how bright and open the restaurant is.

This is, by far, one of the best burgers that I have ever had. It is difficult to go to this place and then ever consider getting a burger from a drive through in the future. I do recommend if you are with a friend to only order one fries as they give you an awful lot.

I was very, very impressed with the staff of the restaurant as well. It made it a very pleasant experience overall.

Finally, one of the American burger joints that we keep getting taunted with makes its way across the border! We can't have In-and-Out, but Five Guys Burgers & Fries does the trick.

From the minute you walk in, you are inundated with large signs with testimonials declaring Five Guys as THE place to be. You have a choice of ordering the usual suspects: Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Bacon Burger, Bacon Cheeseburger. Unless you're really hungry, I'd recommend getting the "little" version as it's just one patty instead of two.

After that, you can order any toppings you want as it's all free! It's a huge list, including grilled onions, mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, and green peppers as some of the standouts. Don't make the same mistake I did and put too many toppings on your burger. It makes for a big sloppy mess that got a little too soggy for my tastes.

For sides, you can order a large or regular fries. We ordered the large fries and it was enough to feed 4-5 people let alone the two of us. Phewww. All soft drinks have free refills too. I noticed that they also offer free peanuts, but with all this food I couldn't squeeze it in.

I'm definitely going back and next time I'll order a burger with more simple toppings. Nom!

I had such high hopes for this place. Sure it has free toppings but most of these "free" toppings are what would come in any other normal burger, such as, mayo, onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard... not exactly anything to brag about. The only extra they offer is the grilled mushrooms and (raw) jalepeno peppers. I really didn't like the fact that the buns weren't toasted or heated up. It was such a messy burger I was spilling it all over the place, each bite was something like bobbing for apples. Napkins, napkins, napkins! The fries weren't memorable and the prices were not vibing well with me. Free refills and free peanuts, yeah that's cool. Let me know when you're able to do something else to impress me.

For the money 5 Guys gives my Vancity area burger fav Vera's a run.

It costs a little less - because it's a little less extravagant (I love the Cantor and poutine at Vera's which is about $17), but at 5 Guys if you get a double and fries it's plenty, and plenty good. And an order of fries? Not the best fries I've had, but I am a big eater and one order is good enough for two of me (although that's taking into account the fact that I'm trying to "cut" down on my carbs for whatever unearthly reason).

I found it a GREAT burger. The biggest drawback was that the bun was too small. But the meat was great and juicy, the topping were dripping out and making things messy.

It's a burger, nothing fancy. No fried salami you can put on, no guac plus pineapple, no super duper thousand toppings you can put on. It's a straight up burger that kicks the teeth in of the Fat Burger straight up burger.

Do I reference other competitors too much in my reviews? I've been crapped on for it a few times, but it gives a great point of reference I think.

Good burger, got the double cheese and bacon with mushrooms and tomatoes.

Good Cajun spiced fries as well.

Mushrooms were a tad cold, so they weren't fresh grilled, a bit of a disappointment.

My American friends were excited that there was a Five Guys close to us, so we trekked out across the bridge. I was impressed by the wide variety of toppings for a fast food chain, but it wasn't any different from what I could make at home -- I put mushrooms on my homemade burgers all the time.

The fries were good, and I greatly enjoyed that they had malt vinegar sitting out by the ketchup so I didn't have to ask.

Great burger (loved the bun) fries were a little under cooked for my liking all served in a  paper lunch sack., lots of free toppings, free soft drink refills, free shelled peanuts, quick, friendly service.

The BEST burger I've had is at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel the "Grilled Prime Rib Beef Burger" is out of this world!

I read online that Five Guys Burgers and Fries had opened up at Park Royal and it was the new best burger in the lower mainland.

I love burgers and to try something new I went there for lunch one day.  I have to say that I was disappointed in the experience and the food.

The burger was "okay."  The fries were over-seasoned and although there were a ton of them for the price of both together I really don't think it's worth paying for.

The service was not overly friendly and the fluorescent-lit cafeteria style interior is not really the experience I would look for when paying that much.  Not to mention the fact that it seemed like their ventilation wasn't working due to the fact that the inside of the place was full of smoke.

I would much rather sit at Fat Burger and enjoy being served by someone with music and a quiet(er) atmosphere than pay slightly more to serve myself and feel like I'm sitting  in a food court.

Think - a cross between a White Spot Legendary burger and a BK Whopper Jr.

A decent burger. The bun was nice and moist (I know...not a word used to describe burger buns often, but the only word I can think of).

Warning - for all your small-appetite types, the Little Burger is not that little! It was a very decent size and with all the toppings, is actually pretty satisfying, with room to stuff your face with the nicely seasoned Cajun fries...I'm not a 'spice' fan, but those Cajun fries were hard to resist!

Comparable to In-N-Out, as many others are saying? I wasn't sold on that idea (and neither was my wallet)...but it's definitely worth the trek to West Van to try it out for yourself!

It's just ok. Liked the burger, except the bun as the type used got soggy easily. And the fries were undercooked and soggy as well. I prefer A&W over this place.

Not a huge fan of five guys. The burger falls apart, juices flowing everywhere, just super messy to eat. Fries are homemade but I always get soggy not crispy ones. I appreciate that they use quality fresh  ingredients, but this place is not for people that don't like messy meals.

Burgers are just like any other burger, but choosing the toppings yourself is a nice touch. Fries are good. Place needs a poutine or a side of gravy on the menu.

Easily the best burger joint in town now.  There may be better lesser known places but this is the best of the big names.

Burger tastes fresh and moist, unlike Vera's, and you still get the choice of a ton of toppings (including fresh _and_ cooked onions), and the burgers are huge.  Delicious chewy bun as well.

We got a small order of fries to share between two of us and it was still too much.  On top of all this the food is reasonable priced and the service is very (maybe sometimes too) friendly.

It's good to have some burger competition now, I think a lot of the local places could learn from the way these guys cook.

Horribly overrated. They make a burger you could have at any random Joe Shmoe burger place.
