I have to agree with the previous posters, as I too, have a love hate relationship with this place.  The food is okay here and there, the service is not bad if you're the only few in the place.

There are times where you don't even get a tea or water re-fill with out asking a few times..*sigh*

It was a cold and stormy day, me and my guy burst into the cold and were seated in a haze of being happy to just be inside.  Slowly things started to become clearer, and I realized as I unzipped my layers that it was far too cold inside to think of taking off my jacket.  I looked around to a flurry of disorganized servers and top 40's techno started to register their grating auto-tuned warblings and pulsing beats on my eardrums.
We got our food, and it was passable, the rice was a little swollen, and the fish was tough.

If you think eating a sub-standard lunch to top 40's techno music in your winter jacket is an awesome time, then you should definitely go to Fish on Rice.

To be honest, I really didn't expect much when coming here, because the previous sushi place at this location (Osaka sushi?) wasn't very good at all.  But this place is now on my radar.  Credit should be given where it is due.

Parking is pretty ample on weekends (especially on Sunday).  The location is tucked up on the 2F of a building.  They have a nice sandwich board on the sidewalk pointing to the main entrance.

The place looked deserted when we came in, but actually there were quite a few customers.  Just couldn't see them initially as the walls were a bit too high.

Several features distinguish this establishment from the competition:
    - pop is free.  Yes, free.  For those who drink it, this will save you a few bucks.
    - their beef skewer is very good.  They use plenty of pepper, which gives it a really nice kick.  Oh, and it's oozing with juices + oil.  Best I've had at ayce sushi.
    - sashimi (salmon and tuna) is available, up to 6 pieces per person.
    - they had several sushi items I haven't seen anywhere else for ayce lunch.  Saba sushi and beef meatball (both quite good) are 2 examples.
    - deep fried chicken skins.  Oh baby.  My friend recommended this dish, and I definitely thank him for my decreased life expectancy.

They missed a couple of items we ordered, but this was fixed promptly when mentioned.  Better than other places which only bring 6 pieces when you order 10.  Oh, and the staff actually noticed my pop was running low and promptly refilled it without me asking.

I guess the only thing that's "bad" is that the interior is definitely on the ghetto side if you care about such things.  Oh, and the lunch is a bit pricier, at $16 after tax + tip.

One last thing to mention: they had a TV showing some kind of dance-off.  That kept us entertained the whole time as the dancers were good.

Fish on Rice is definitely a nice alternative to Tomokazu.  Will definitely be back.

I have a love-hate relationship with this particular location. I love it because it's half a block from where I live, hate it because the service is inconsistent.

We've resorted to the a la carte menu for take out so we don't have to deal with the service. Even ordering over the phone can be an ordeal some times and begs the question: why don't you just number your menu items if you can't understand what I'm saying? Don't get me wrong, I'm an immigrant and I get that not everyone can pick up English quickly, but having a Chinese person take orders over the phone for a Japanese restaurant = facepalm.

Getting back to the food, venue and service, it's clear that they only focus on pushing out the food and not much on improving the decor. I think the only decent area is right by the sushi bar where the tv's are. I also think that they've changed some of their staffing because there used to be a real douchy manager who had little social grace and played a game of "how fast can I cash out this person?" The new manager is much nicer but some of the waitresses leave much to be desired. I haven't had AYCE here in a long time and from reading the reviews, I'm glad of that. The a la carte items are a bit pricey for the area but is always fresh and good in quality, including the sashimi. You get what you pay for?

3 stars for having good quality food on the a la cart menu. -.5 each for AYCE, service, decor, price.

Sad. that's all i can describe this place.

We went in with a party of 4 for all you can eat sushi for lunch. The place didn't seem to fill up quickly as shabusen. They wouldn't let us sit near the windows even though there was no one else there...weird. They never refilled our drinks or tea. And even though its supposed to be all you can eat, I had the feeling that they hoped we misread that part or didn't expect us to eat much at all.

the good thing is that the sashimi was fresh. But they count the pieces like chinese communists count grains of rice, and made sure we were only allowed a certain amount. The first serving of sashimi was rather cut small. The second time it came out it was the size i'm used to normally at these types of places. Makes me think why would they bother holding out on us like this? Also just random things we ordered was good, but portion size was really meager.

overall he food was fresh but the amount they gave us and the service sucked. The waitresses would come by our table: never. And when they finally did make an appearance they shoved the food on our table while facing the direction they came from like they didn't want to be around us for a second longer. This place is obviously chinese owned, and it made me appreciate korean sushi establishments so much more than I did before. Which is just crazy/sad because I would have never thought that way until I came here. hahaha

All You Can Eat? With prices at 11.95 (Lunch), $13.95 (Happy Hour 4.30-6.30pm) and $20.95/$21.95 (Dinner/Weekends), why not. We chose to go during Happy Hour which had a decent selection in between the lunch and dinner menu.

Sadly, it's the worse AYCE Japanese I've tried so far. Definitely no attention in preparing and serving the food. They dump it on a small plate and onto your table.

While I won't expect much for quality sushi rice at this type of restaurant, at least serve a fresh batch the one made that day. The ones I've had were dry. The fried items were too oily. No time to let it sit and drain for a minute or two?

Oh, did you want lemon or radish to help alleviate the bland tasting food? That will cost you extra. Thank God soy sauce and wasabi are still free at this restaurant.

And finally the service was both good and bad. The older staff was friendly, while the younger one just was on a mission to provide a negative aura.

The only thing good were the characteristic Japanese-style booths, but which were dilapidating as well.

At this location that could be prime, it's time for a make-over. Fish On Rice, your time is up. Go back to the water as you're drying up.

My friends and I wound up here last weekend after our first choice was closed. We were still waiting for one person to arrive, so we just sat with our tea and perused our menus.

Our waitress came by EVERY MINUTE, pacing past the table and looking at us and asking if we were ready to order. It was nice that she was attentive, but oh my gosh - just give us a minute! She was really nice, but it was a little annoying.

The food was pretty good - definitely nothing remarkable but it was fine. The sushi rolls are huuuuuge! It was decently cheap so I'd go back, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

I had heard decent things about Fish on Rice, so I was really disappointed when I finally ate there. It might be good quality for All-You-Can-Eat, but we were ordering off the menu, and it was nothing to write home about. The sashimi was pretty flavourless, and my yardstick roll - negitoro maki - certainly did not melt in my mouth the way it's supposed to. The fish just didn't seem particularly good, or fresh.

I was also shocked to see that a couple of the specialty vegetarian rolls cost 9.50 a roll! For that kind of money, I expect at least 3 kinds of rare-ish seafood, not just avocado and mushroom... Overall, while I've certainly had worse sushi in Vancouver, I would say it's not hard to get better, or better value.

$15.60 for a sushi all you can eat? I'M DOWN FOR IT!

That's what you're probably thinking when you see this restaurant. Well, its actually 12.95 but I went on the Rememberance Day so they add $1. FML.

Anyway, seems like a good deal, but NO! THIS PLACE IS $#@)($!. Alright I have to be nice since obscene language is improper in this site. Alright you wanna play clean huh punk?

Gave this place a 1* because:
    1. Crap service: waitresses throws your dish on the table and leaves. waitresses do not smile. waitresses rushes all the time.
    2. Crap portions: 20 minute wait for 2 slices of sashimi. Another 20 minute wait for a roll. Another 20 minute wait for a microscopic bowl of rice.
    Ultimately...
    3. Crap food: they taste like ass hair. Sushi's don't taste cold n fresh.

Whole point is: this place is actually un-yelp-worthy and crappy. Savvy? Don't go here unless you got 26 hours a day to spend and wait for food... oh WAIT, you can only order for 2 HOURS. YAY!

After a long day snowboarding and snowshoeing on Cypress mountain we needed a food fix.  We used the GPS to locate a sushi place, but found out it was no longer there, but instead we saw this place.

We had the all-you-can-eat menu and were very satisfied.  The wait staff were nice and prompt.  The quality is above average for most of the items we ordered, and we were glad that the servings (two of us) weren't so big so that we can try more items on the menu, rather than gorging on just a few.

We ate to the point of glut.  There was a 2 hour limit, however I don't think we stayed there quite that long because the food was delivered so quickly, since we sat right next to the kitchen.  Also, the dishes came at perfect frequency so we could pace ourselves too.  I think they were surprised as to how much food we had, and pretty much did not waste anything.

Definitely would come back with friends.

I was really impresses with Fish on RIce. When I walked in, I thought oh no, another cheap Vancouver sushi joint with sub-par sushi. My opinion went even further down when I walked in and was asked if I wanted the all you can eat menu or the menu. Usually the all you can eat places aren't the best.

I chose to order off the menu and had a spicy tuna roll, tuna sashimi and 2 pieces of inari. I know, I am fat. When my roll came, I was pleasantly suprised by how well it was put together, the taste and the fact that it didn't fall apart which happens at many Vancouver sushi restaurants. My sashimi was a little spicy and at times a little cold but all in all it was good. The inari was wonderful, I was really impressed. It was just like my great aunt used to make!

Fish on Rice is a quality sushi joint and worthy of a trip if you are in the mood for sushi.

It's not the best in the city but it's definitely not the worst.
Good service and pretty good menu with lots of options.

This is odd, I like the Fish on Rice on Kingsway in Burnaby, but strongly dislike this location.

The interior is standard sushi restuarant, little booth rooms are cozy. Good selection of food... but for some reason i cannot stand the taste of anything in this location! I'm not sure what it is - bad sushi chef maybe? Some strange water? I don't know what it is but I do my best to steer clear of this fish on rice location.

Aside of the food the staff is exceptionally lovely and helpful and that is the redeeming quality for this review.

Wow, this place really does have mixed reviews! I've been coming here regularly (well, as regular as you can do AYCE) and we've never been dissapointed. The staff is always super friendly to us, fast service, yummy food, decent price, looks clean? Yes, there is a lot of sushi places near by, and have been to all, but we still think this is the best AYCE sushi in the fairview/granville area.

There is so much competition for all-you-can-eat sushi in Vancouver and it is difficult for one place to set itself apart from the next. What Fish On Rice has going for it is a good location along West Broadway, a clean second-level restaurant, friendly staff and dependable dishes.

I went for lunch and did the all-you-can-eat thing, since it's such a great deal ($11.95 and free pop!). There is a wide variety on the A-Y-C-E menu and the staff does not try to ignore your requests for second and third orders. So it's easy to order round one and consider if, when, and what you would like for round two. They offer seven types of Nigiri Sushi but only tuna or salmon sashimi (those two have a six-piece limit per person).

The sushi was better than some other A-Y-C-E fish I've tried and the tempura was crispy and hot. I wouldn't go for the Motoyaki again because it was greasy and too fishy-tasting.

Remember that your whole table has to go either A-Y-C-E or a la carte - no mixin and matchin. There's a two-hour time limit and you can't take home your leftovers.

This place is one of the better AYCE sushi place among all others.
The ingredient tasted fresh enough and sushi rice is not front the previous night.
I love the smaller servings so I don't need to stuff things down my throat to avoid extra charge, lol.
It's a little expensive for dinner but they offer you unlimited prawn tempura and various sashimi.
    Over all, not too bad.
If you are looking for fine Japanese food, this is not the place; but for a place to stuff yourself silly, it'll do just fine.

Fish on, you have become such a disappointment. This used to be my weekend tradition with the boys, decent quality AYCE for a good price, it was tough to beat.....emphasis on the WAS. I have not been frequenting this spot, but have gone back a few weekends this summer, and every time I have been the quality has been steadily decreasing. The last time, was the last straw, NO MORE I SAY! The fish was awful, not sure if it was old, or just a switch to a cheap provider, but its not worth eating. I think they have tried to combat a slowing business by cutting food cost - BIG MISTAKE! Try the opposite, up cost a bit, bring in some quality food and hope to god you can keep the remaining few clients who will frequent this joint - especially now that they won't even open their patio. Fish On - your not the first to hear this from me, but improve, or burn to the ground so someone who cares can use your awesome real estate!

Fish on Rice isn't the best sushi in town, but it is good for an all-you-can-eat place. You do have the option of ordering a la carte too. The lunch price is $11.95 and the dinner price is $20.95. From 4:30-6:30pm you can enjoy the happy meal price of $13.95. A word of warning. Some people take the all you can eat thing a little too far and order way more than they can eat. It's kind of gross watching all that food go to waste or some poor guy trying to eat all the food he ordered as a result of his eyes being bigger than his stomach. Go slow! You can always order more!

Good sushi but not the greatest.  I like that there's no limit to sashimi like most places.  The cost for all-you-can-eat dinner is the standard $20.95; although a $17.95 option is available (less sushi choices).  If you go on a game night, tvs are available for you to take part in the entertainment.  It's not a busy place but the people are friendly and the service is efficient.

Do I have to give it a whole star.  When we arrived the hostess asked if it was for all you can eat and didn't even look at us once.  She sat us at the table and we ordered.  The selection wasn't to bad and the price was reasonable for dinner.  When we ordered our food we barely saw any servers, they would drop off the food and pick up the used trays but didn't seem to acknowledge us very much.  My Sunomono was between cool and warm, the shrimp in it did not feel cold, not good for a soup that is supposed to be cold.  The deep fried Gyoza was good.  I was finishing my last few bites of my last dish and, we thought t was sort of funny, before I could dip my last bit gyoza the girl was trying to take my plate.  I of course stopped her so I could use my dip.  When we were leaving we only left like less than a dollar tip because we didn't feel that the service we got was overly tip worthy.  The guy came over and picked up our cash and looked at the bill and said "You know the tip is not included in the bill right?" we told him we were aware and started to leave.  He asked if there was a problem and we said no.  We then were on the way out the door and he then asked if we wanted to leave a tip for our server.  My boyfriend quickly just gave him a Toonie and we left.  I couldn't believe the guy begging for a tip, I also couldn't believe that my boyfriend gave him a tip, I will not go back to this place.  I wasn't going to go back because the food and service was not worth the price, which for good sushi is reasonable, but not for this quality but my decision was more than solidified as we tried to leave without being to rude and were poked and prodded into a tip.

I finally tried this place after my usual, Shin Ju, stopped doing all you can eat lunch. I was a little leery based on the reviews on this site (but I correct for the inevitable negative bias you'll get), first time was OK, service was fine, food was decent (not as good as Shin Ju, but more variety on the all you can eat menu). Second time, though, it was horrendous, tuna sashimi was disgusting and rubbery, everything else was mediocre, and the edamame was inedible (how can you screw up edamame? they were crunchy and stale tasting). Left a nasty metallic taste in my mouth (I think it was the tuna), don't think I'll be going back again. Their cooked food seems better (had more of that first time around), maybe that's the way to go if you do all you can eat.

When Fish on Rice opened, my husband used to go once a week for Sushi. We moved out of the neighborhood 4 months ago and thought since we hadn't been back in awhile we would go for Happy Hour. What a gong show. We were seated and ordered our food. Within 5 minutes we had almost everything on the table that we ordered, which tells me it wasn't fresh and it didn't taste that way either. The waitresses were brutal! the restaurant was virtually empty and they ignored us completely unless we called them over. My husband had to ask for something 3 times before he finally got it. The kicker was when we were paying. I was handed my change and told that the tip wasn't included in the bill. I though that was a strange thing to say so I ignored it. As I'm putting my change in my wallet she asks me if anything was wrong with her meal. Not wanting to get into it I said no and started zipping up my purse. She then told me again that the tip wasn't included with the meal, this time in a much stronger tone. I was so offended by her tone and the fact she was asking that I reminded her that a tip is not required especially when the service and the meal was so terrible. We left right away. I have never been to a restaurant before where a server has pretty much demanded a tip from me. My suggestion is to stay away from the poor service you will receive here.
