I'm an SD native and it has taken me this long to experience lunch at the Fish Market.  WHY?!? I have no idea, but I have been missing out!!!!!!

My mom works downtown so before we did some Christmas shopping damage, we decided to grab a bite to eat and she suggested the sushi bar. The waitress recommended the Jasmine roll  - spicy scallops topped with fresh salmon and very thin slices of lemon and the Chanel roll - spicy hamachi topped with seared albacore. BOTH were so fresh and amazing!!! Highly recommended! If you're more into the mayo, deep-fried type of shit, then this place isn't for you... (btw ew). Fish market sushi bar gives it to you simple & fresh; I LOVE IT. And we couldn't resist a side of uni (sea urchin). It was one of the fattest servings of uni I have ever had... melt-in-your-mouth fresh and honestly to die for. And to top off the great food: the view is impeccable; San Diego is so beautiful and this spot really makes you appreciate it. I just wanted to sit there all day and soak in all the relaxation. Definitely going back for beer/sake/sushi next time I'm down.

Places like this make San Diego so easily loved. THIS IS A MUST TRY.

    3 words: Sucker for sashimi!

I had been looking for a great, reliable sushi spot near the little italy/marina area for a while now. Sick of driving to banker's hill or Liberty Station to get my sashimi fix, I agreed to try Fish Market Sushi Bar when my bf promised it would be good.

We went with two other friends and DEFINITELY ordered way too much food. We had a combo of 6 different rolls, mostly specialty rolls, the small 6 piece sashimi platter, and a cucumber salad. not just a few rolls, but EVERY roll was fantastic. We nearly finished all the food. I mostly ate the sashimi, but it was very fresh.

Best part: we went on a friday night without a reservation at 7:30 pm and there were plenty of seats! Plus, there was a parking lot, and the service could not have been better!

Needless to say, this place will be seeing a LOT of me! omnomnom!

ALL WAS VERY GOOD;  Had ginger prawns, crab cakes, clam bake and spicy tuna roll.  Not disappointed AT ALL.  Get there before 5 to get a table on the water.

Came here on vacation from Seattle and wasn't disappointed. Rolls were good and sashimi was excellent. Favorite thing was the soft shell crab appetizer. That's a must get. The edamame was cold - Not sure if that is a SoCal thing. funny enough they had some pretty great coffee.

Superb sushi, nice setting, friendly and knowledgeable staff/chef.  Good basic rolls as well as some innovative combinations.  They also offer monkfish liver in season-- the fois gras of sushi joints.

This place has great sushi at decent prices.  The fish was fresh and the service was fast and friendly.

The scallops with dynamite sauce was good, the quality of the sushi was good but freshness and taste was very good.  The tempura roll was simply amazing!  Our hostess Maiko was very friendly and attentive even during a very busy night.  She made our dinner special.

This place will be packed by 6:00 PM on Fridays and weekends so get here early around 5:00 to 5:30 at the latest.

There are only two very small complaints that would have made this place 5 star- the edamame was not fresh, it had an old re-heated waxy taste to it and the sushi rice was not packed very well so it fell apart rather easy (the sushi chefs may have been rushed since it was very busy).

Overall this place is great.  The next time we are in San Diego we will be having a dinner here.

Came here for an early lunch, sat at the sushi bar and chatted with the chef while we ate. The sushi was really great, and the chef was funny. When we told him we were from Pennsylvania he started talking to us about Iron Chef(since Morimoto's restaurant is in Philadelphia) and how he watched it in Japan. For the quality, the prices are mostly reasonable. Some items on the menu stood out to me as a little expensive but others were pretty cheap so who knows.

The miso soup was only OK, but they make up for it by giving you a cucumber-seafood salad before you order and an orange splashed with some kind of wine or liqueur  when you're finished. Both were really delicious - they'd be worth ordering if they didn't give them to you for free.

We showed up at 7:30 on a Friday night, and were a bit worried by all the people we saw waiting in the front of the Fish Market, but upon talking to the sushi chef, we realized that most of them were waiting for the main restaurant.  It only took us about 5 to 10 minutes to get 2 spots at the sushi bar, and we saw a party of 4 get a table in the same time frame.

The menu was a nice mix of a good variety of sushi (including several daily specials like kanpachi), cut rolls, special rolls, and some creative sushi dishes.  For example, I had a fresh oyster topped with uni, maguro, quail's egg and ponzu.  My girlfriend had cooked scallops topped with fresh uni.

The sushi tasted quite fresh, and the creative dishes were excellent.  My spicy tuna cut roll was only mediocre (though huge), but I say it serves me right for ordering something boring like that.  When I come back, I'll go for sushi and some of the creative house specials, and avoid the cut rolls.

One thing I liked about this place was that it avoided a problem that a lot of San Diego sushi places have, where your only options besides traditional sushi are a bunch of over-sauced, over-cucumbered, over-avocadoed special rolls.

Only cons for me were the service (the was nobody to take our name or get us a table - we ended up approaching the sushi self ourselves) and the cut rolls (we didn't order a special roll, but we did see some prepared, and they looked over-sauced).  But those are easy to work around (sit at the bar, and don't order a special roll), so I'm not really docking them.

Probably the best sushi place I have tried in SD so far (though I haven't yet been to Sushi Ota).

Sure the Fish Market is located on one of San Diego's most "touristy" locations (Embarcadero) but regardless of this, the restaurant is solid for both casual + formal seafood dining and in my opinion the best hidden sushi bar in Downtown San Diego.

Step inside the Fish Market (usually packed with people) and head immediately right where to your surprise you'll find a humble little sushi bar with seating usually always available. For the best experience sit at the bar and talk it up with the chefs, they'll always recommend the best.

Don't expect to find fruit infused rolls or rolls with names like "Spicy Monkey Tempura Kiwi Roll" none of that here! What you will find is a great selection of traditional rolls (Maki, Hand Rolls, Nigiri, Sashimi) and a great variety of fresh fish with amazing quality. Don't forget that the Fish Market owns their own Fishing boat therefore the Fish Selection here is some of the freshest in town.

There are a few fancier rolls on the menu but nothing ridiculous, this is a Sushi lovers kind of place. Another thing that I like about this bar is that the entire Sushi Bar staff is Japanese and they are very nice people who know their SUSHI very well :-) NAKA (Chef) is dope!

    Enjoy!

This was the most surprising dining experiences we had while in san Diego. We were short on time and though we'd go somewhere a little less expensive.

This place was awesome. Try the spicy tuna appetizer with chile oil and wonton chips. Tasted like we were eating at nobu for a second...

Some of the best sushi I've ever had. We usually get cooked instead of raw, but tried a raw roll this time. It was fantastic. And the baked scallop appetizer was a great find as well.
A great way to enjoy the Fish Market while avoiding the massive crowd.

Just grabbed a quick bite while picking up some items from the retail side. The maguro tuna and raw oysters were both excellent. The real highlight was the fresh, hand caught, Sea of Cortez prawns purchased and cooked at home. They were absolutely fresh and delicious. The Manhatten clam chowder was very good and the chunk of just baked bread that came with it was slathered in butter and devoured before we left the parking lot

Found this place thanks to Yelp and really happy with it. For a touristy location we had a great meal at a really reasonable price. We enjoyed the cucumber seafood salad that was served before the meal. The sushi chef graciously served some pieces of nori (dry seaweed) that my 8 yr old son asked for.  We shared edamame and miso, I had my usual unagi (very tasty), my husband had salmon roe, and tuna, and we shared the soft shell crab roll (YUM).  Plus tea for two and the total was under $40.  The service was good and despite the crowd in the main restaurant lobby, there was no waiting for a spot at the sushi counter. After lunch we enjoyed the fascinating tour of the Midway, which I highly recommend!

The lady at the convention center reccomended this place that it had really fresh fish so I decided to come here the afternoon before my race. It is located on the bay in Tuna Harbor by the greatest Generation Walk where the main attraction was the USS Midway CV-41  Museum ship that was at leat 5000 ft big. so it was a beautiful view to look at as well as tourist boats and pirate ships crossing past.  Plenty of young sailor guys in there white uniforms walking around, and jazz saxaphone players mking music on that walkway for tips. They have outdoor patio seating overlooking the bay. I sat out there since it was sunny and beautiful they had so many different types of fish on the menu you normally could not get at most places not even upscale fish markets up north. Like the Wahoo and albacore tuna ahi,  sea bass ect... It seemded like they were really popular with there spicy tuna rolls and seafood salads and cheesebreads since I noticed many ordering them. I got a Tuna ahi with some type of spicy ginger sauce med rare. it was kinda small came with two sides the au gratin potatoes. I wasnt impressed with it tasted very flourly, the jasmine rice was good though they load you up with a hot bread roll to make you full at the end of the lack of food but I guess when you get fish fresh from the ocean served on your plate it is frugal. Thy had a indoor sushi bar with a oyster bar in it as well made many ways, and across a very large fish market full of many fish and shrimp I never had before they sell it to you to take home and cook. Very big place and they have four types of atmospheres you can chose from where you wasnt to be comfortable at. Patio, Outdoor patio, lounge bar area dining room and a upstairs dining area to overlook the bay. Very successful restaurant. Parking spaces are so timy like everywhere else and you have to pay a meter, I saw the parking meter maids write many tickets for double parked cars so try to take the time to parallel you vehicle in the lines. Tickets suck. But Id defiantly come back. Even though there are plenty more high quality seafood restaurants near by in San Diego Also if you are at the convention center by the restaurant promo area ask for a vip coupon just incase you get there and its packed you can cut the line with it:)

WOW!  What a find!  This place has awesome sushi.  Very simple, authentic and fresh.  There's no imitation crab here, only the real thing.  OK the location is in the middle of a very busy touristy area.  But the food is excellent.  I took my daughter and her friend here for lunch.  They started us out with hot towels, then complimentary cucumber salad (fresh and delicous).  We had the soft shell crab appetizer, miso soups, avocado roll, caterpillar maki, spicy scallop hand roll, sweet shrimp nigiri, saba (mackerel) nigiri.  (Yeah, way too much food for a small woman and two eleven year old girls).  At the end of the meal we were served complimentary sliced, chilled, fresh oranges artfully arranged - there was a splash of Contreau on my orange)  Or some other liquor, please do not quote me on this, but the taste was delicious.  I will come back here again.
