I love First Markham Place!  Not just because I live practically right next to it, but because their asian food court is one of the best in Toronto (voted #1 chinese food court in Toronto area for several years).

Like many food courts, some come and go.  But you can always count on each stall having a huge selection and wide variety of asian food (Cantonese, Vietnamese, Western-Chinese, Thai, Hunan, Taiwanese, etc).  I had a friend who owns 88 Express (postal outlet) and says that rent is pretty expensive there.  Thankfully the price of food there is still cheap to be competitive.  Being an Asian food court, the food stalls are all open till 8 or 9pm every day of the week including Sundays, and closed during a non-peak weekday (usually a Monday or Tuesday).

Oh, and I have boy-cotted the Taiwanese stall because they gave my mom bad soy milk and ripped me off in change many years ago.

There are other snack places on one side of FMP including a relatively new one that has freshly made beef/pork jerky (yummy!).

Comparing to Pacific Mall, I would say there are less stores, but a different selection of food court stalls (no more thai food at Pac Mall for example).

I come here very often.  Has everything I need except for a TD Bank branch (they have China Bank ... LOL!) and a Canada Post outlet (they have these just down the street at Hwy7/Warden).  Note that parking can be a pain sometimes during peak hours (weekends and weekday lunch time).

Although I come here mostly for the food court, there are other notable shops including an official Rogers dealer (AmCall) and Wind Mobile.

To me First Markham Place is a place for :

    cheap food and eye glasses.

How come all these eyeglasses places survive?  because there must be a lot of vision handicapped in the area. lol

How come all these asian food places survive? Because there must be a lot hungry people in the area who eat asian food. :)

Since there is so much competition for these two products, the market prices are fair here and the quality is good.

Check it out if you're looking for cheap food or eyeglasses. :p

When I think about First Markham Place, I think about Food Food Food and more food!! It is like a giant Food Court, anything Asian you can find it here!

Most of the restaurants here are reasonably priced and being in such a competitive environment, all of them have to be excellent and good value if not they won't be in business for long...... the turnover of business here is so fast and frequent!!

Parking can be a hassle on weekend, but this is nothing when compare to Pacific Mall!! I love to come here whenever I have no idea what I am going to have for lunch, and I always find something to eat!!!

It definitely beats Pacific Mall in terms of orderly attire. In fact, I haven't been inside for about 2 years now, it's gotten that terrible there.

My dad owns an optical store inside, one of 11 and counting inside the place. Of course, he's the best one out of them all ;).

As for the food court, Magic Fruit used to be good, but has gone downhill for me. If I want my Pho fix, Pho Lings is good (their spicy beef vermicelli is DELICIOUS). Yan's Cook (they changed the name) has their awesome siu mai and salted fish and chicken fried rice, and their portions are HUGE.

There's also occasional performances in the food court to pass on time when you're eating. Along with tae kwon do and karate classes...it's pretty fun watching them I find.

If Pacific Mall is a slutty teenage Attention Whore[1], then First Markham Place would be its sensible and more demure sister[2]; it's definitely less trashy, more classy. We stopped here while on the Epic Suburb Crawl because we had some time to kill before dinner at Rolling Pot.

This mall is more spacious and less crowded. It does not induce headaches or eye strain. If I lived in the area, I could actually envision myself coming here to sample dried fishy treats at Ding Dong Snack Shop and get a quick bite in the food court. Maybe even pick up some bootleg DVDs[3] from one of the many video stores.

It even has a movie complex with 10 theaters.

Clearly, it's better than its skanky counterpart.

First Markham Place is a lesser-known mall (when compared to THE Pacific Mall -- the shopping mecca I could literally spend days in if time had permitted.) That's not to say FMP doesn't have its own perks. Fewer shoppers meant less time spent waiting in line and a less claustrophobic feel; you get the gist. Most of the stores and types of store found inside PM can also be found in FMP -- give and take some price and layout modifications here and there.

Kiosk owners are extremely friendly and willing to negotiate prices. As a non-business student, if I can get away with some pretty nice deals, you can too. FMP also offers a myriad of dining options (again, paling in comparison to what PM has to offer), but I can guarantee that you'll find at least one place you'll like and pledge loyalty to.

What FMP offers that PM doesn't, however, is the homey feel especially during the major holidays. Crowds were gathering by the food court area to see a group of kids perform Teresa Teng's 'Moon Represent My Heart' when I was there. How's that for a change from the hustle and bustle of PM?

The GTA Chinese community seems to follow a pattern of moving north as they prosper. So I guess it's no surprise there's a newer Chinese type mall almost directly north of the Pacific Mall.

What's nice about First Markham Place is it anchors the eastern end of a big box strip. You can indulge in both occidental and oriental wares. I'm the kind of person who likes to park and walk, even in a vast big box complex, even in winter, so that works for me. There's a Starbucks at the nearby Chapters and there's even a movie theater to cap off a day of shopping.

There appears to be no actual Chinese grocery store anchoring this mall. The shops seem pretty inconsequential, but then I like Pacific Mall for three reasons: 1) Cheap LaCoste accessories 2) Different kinda computer accessories 3) Knock off DVDs. A chinese bakery with egg tarts is also appreciated.

First Markham Place has all those but not as many. All 'n' all not a bad place and parking is a bit better, especially if you don't mind walking.

I love this plaza for its variety. Congee Wong AND a PetSmart? Are you kidding me? Throw in the Chapters, Micheal's Crafts, and arcade and you've pretty much covered all my needs in life.

I had a blind date at the movie theater here that did not end too well.. I mean, the guy pretended he was Spider Man and shot imaginary webs from his wrists and ran around the cinema.. but it makes for a good story, yeah?

I work in Markham, so I come here with my coworkers about once a week. The food court is pretty good, offering some great food at decent prices.

My favourite things to get at the food court:

Tasty House: Mango and coconut milk with tapioca. Heaven!

Shanghai Legend: Spicy beef noodle soup. The noodles and broth are great, and you get a drink with it for about $6. They also have spicy peanut sauce soup (it's dam dam mein in Cantonese, I don't know what it's called in English), which is really hard to find in the city for some reason.

Yan's Wok: DELICIOUS siu mai that I'm pretty sure is made of fish cake. 5 pieces for $2.50 that they give you in half a styrofoam clamshell with a couple of toothpicks. Make sure to put the spicy soy sauce on them.

TianJin Fine Food: It's either this place or the place beside it (hey, give me a break, it's a food court, I'm doing the best I can without being able to read Chinese!) Very good seafood congee with fried donut. I thought the fried donut was a little pricey at $3, but I was really craving it. Unfortunately, it was a family size, maybe 4 sticks. And the grease was soaking through the paper bag they were in. So of course i ate them all. Then I was full of deliciousness and self loathing.

I know this is a short list for someone who goes once a week, but most times I get the beef noodle soup. I am a creature of habit.

The place is also pretty good for shopping if you like fobby fashions, but maybe only half of the stores are open Monday to Friday. It's definitely fun to browse on your lunch break!

This place is a bit better than the well-known Pacific Mall. Its a bit different because its easier not to get lost in the mall, but pacific mall has the worst design for the floor plan on the main floor. Everywhere you turn all the stores look the same its very easy to get lost in pacific mall. Right next to the mall there is a theater to so after a bit of shopping you can go next door to watch a movie.
