Oh Ottawa. Sometimes you fool me. It started out as a warm spring day at 17 degrees in Toronto and then somehow dropped to 4 as we arrived in the nation's capital. Then it started to rain.
Seeking a respite from the cold, damp night we discovered Feleena's. After a short wait (this place is popular) we were seated and enjoyed genuine Mexican food.
The Big K enjoyed the heat of lomo de puerco, pork tenderloin with red and green peppers in a dark chile sauce, while the Little K and I had burritos and enchiladas.
Portion sizes were generous but not over-the-top. Service was charming and the restaurant's rustic and appealing earth toned décor was warming to our slightly rain dampened spirits.
In a city sometimes known for its trickery (we are thinking weather and politics) it was nice to finally experience something genuine. -

I've been going to Feleena's since it opened, and I'm a little saddened by what it's become. We stopped in for a quick lunch, and were served our entrees within 5 min of ordering. The beans weren't seasoned, the rice was dry, and the enchiladas definitely had a reheated texture and tatse (cheese not warmed all the way through, and we won't talk about the ground beef with taco mix seasoning).
The service was excellent, I still love the atmosphere, and the patio is one of the nicest in town (although we were inside).
All that said, two mains that were a shade below mediocre, a beer, and an iced tea for $50 means I won't be back, regardless of how nice the patio is. -

Feleena's used to be my favourite Mexican restaurant in Ottawa until I tried Agave in Westboro.... and then Pancho Villa on Elgin.
So really -- it was good until I actually had some of the other great options in the city. Space is sometimes limited here, especially in the winter or when the patio isn't in use. I've waited quite a while here before only to be seated and then told that we can't actually sit where they were about to seat us so my small group camped out near the bar instead.
Their chimichangas are OK but again, I've had better. I do find that their drinks are quite strong (which... *ahem*... I actually enjoy!).
In the summer they have the best patio in the Glebe and perhaps of anywhere on Bank Street north of the Rideau River.
I tried their chocolate brownie when I went with an amigo the last time and I'm not sure if they always offer it or even if it was made there but it's phenominal. -

Finding good Mexican food in Ottawa is about as easy as finding a moose in Mexico City. I hate to play the naysayer to the glowing reviews but Feelena's food is mediocre and expensive. The patio is nice but the overpriced, poor quality sangria doesn't exactly invite one to want to spend much time on it. Though the place bills itself as a "taste of old Mexico," like most Mexican restaurants around here, it's really "a taste of Tex-Mex," with horrible concoctions like the chimichanga (you know the Texan innovation on the burrito - stick it in a deep-fryer) littering the menu. The only passable Mexican food I've had in Ottawa is Ahora.
And if I needed any further incentives not to want to go back there, their new "electronic menu" displayed on Bank proudly boasts a photograph of Stephen Harper eating there. Ugh. -

Feleena's has one of my favourite patios in the Glebe and their food is 5x better than the bland fare they serve at Mexicali Rosa's down the street. Their menu features many traditional Mexican dishes, plus some of the usual stuff like nachos. There has only been one time when I didn't love my meal here and it was when they vegetarianized a quesadilla for me, but forgot to add much of anything other than some green and red peppers. Otherwise, everything I've eaten here has been delicious. The indoor decor and ambiance is very cozy, but honestly I only come once the patio opens up. My favourite experience at Feleena's is a bowl of their amazing guacamole, chips and a carafe of sangria on a warm summer evening with a friend.

This place tasted as authentic Mexican as you can get! Healthy portions, decent prices, and just overall deliciousness

Amazing Mexican food at a slightly higher price point. The food is very expensive, however there is no such thing as cheaper food in the Glebe. Most dishes are in the $15-$25 range so come with a fat wallet.

My wife and I lived in the states all summer and grew accustomed to the the plethora of Mexican food places. Yes, they had your Taco Bells and Taco Time, but there were also tonnes of non-fastfood Mexican options. Then, we came to Canada only to find that Mexican food isn't really on the menu here. Heck, it took us two months to run across a Taco Bell, and even then it is part of a KFC/Pizza Hut complex. Thankfully, there is Feleena's in the Glebe. Feleena's is a real Mexican restaurant, where you can sit and enjoy a four-star Mexican meal. Yes, they serve your nachos and fajitas. But, you can also find the lesser-known, but delightful carne asada, or chimichanga. And they serve more than bottles of Corona and Dos Equis - you can enjoy margaritas and (sigh) sangria!!! The location is awesome - right in the heart of the Glebe, and in the summer, the patio will be smokin'! So, relax Ottawa: you don't have to do without good Mexican food anymore.
