If you want to dabble in the creative and exciting world of film and video making, like everyone seems to be doing these days on YouTube, but you want more than a virtual community to join, FAVA is a great place to check out. Edmonton has a smallish but thriving film and video arts scene.

If you want to learn the basics you can take mini-courses here or just talk with any of the members who live and breathe film-making. Everyone seems to have a project on the go. You can find people to work on your film or join someone else's collaborative art-making. Recently I went to an outdoor film festival located on Stony Plain Rd. They blocked off 151 to 156 Streets, had bonfires and projected films on screens inside store windows. People milled around in the streets watching what our local artists have created. It was a fun event where lots of young arts types congregated to watch each other's flicks. I hope this event keeps running and keeps getting bigger. Once you're a member of FAVA you can rent equipment and use their facilities. Video making is a fun hobby and keeps the creative cogs turning. I'm thinking of joining in the new year.
