Review from Paula K.
Fatburger is a purveyor of fast food burgers that are definitely a cut above other fast food places. The patty is thin but juicy, and lacks a grilled flavour. The burger gets most of its bite from the added condiments, of which there is a good amount of choice and is very fresh. The bun is also very fresh. With fries and a drink, even with a combo deal, you're almost paying as much as a sit-down restaurant. Definitely check out their shakes, as they are very, very good.

As a native Southern Californian, I have fond memories of Fatburger from my youth. I remember the Fatburger as thick and juicy. But the patty I received at the City Centre location was thin, and not particularly juicy, just like almost every other hamburger I've ordered in Canada. I enjoyed the real cheddar and crisp bacon accompaniments, but the grilled onions I requested were not quite grilled enough. I liked the burger, and it certainly beats McDonald's or Burger King, but I prefer Chili's and Red Robin. And the prices are at nearly the Chili's/Red Robin level.
My vegetarian wife ordered a Veggie Burger and we both thought that it contained the most disgusting, rubbery, Veggie patty ever. And Fatburger assumes that you'd like to eat your Veggie Burger on a whole wheat bun just because you're a vegetarian.
While we enjoyed the seasoned salt accompaniment, my wife thought that the french fries tasted as if they were previously frozen.
At a total of $26 for two burgers, an order of fries, a drink, a beer (only $1.99), tax and tip, we thought Fatburger wasn't the best deal. -

I was excited when I saw that a Fatburger was moving into City Center, despite having previously never been to one. When it finally opened, there were lines out the door every day for a couple weeks. Once the lines died down, I decided to give it a try.
You're given a lot of choice, and I had to spend several minutes staring at the menu before I figured out how to simply order a cheeseburger and fries - a little complicated for a glorified fast food joint. The prices were high, meaning that after the first day, this became a very rare lunch destination.
That said, I love everything here! Their burgers (beef, chicken, or veggie) are all great, their fries are delicious (albeit a little greasy sometimes), and their milkshakes are some of the best I've had. Also, they have free refills on fountain drinks, so I always make sure I stay a little longer and try to get a little bit more out of my money with a refill or two.
The decor is neat, and sitting in the booths near the back it's easy enough to forget you're in a fast food place in a mall. The staff are also friendly and efficient!
Fatburger is a nice occasional indulgence that leaves you feeling a little bit better than a regular fast food binge! -

The burgers and fries here taste just like burgers and fries that I would make at home... somewhat average and not that flavourful. I come to a burger place to get a great meal that i could not make myself, and thi splace does not give me that. They have good shakes however.

Fatburger finally expands to the downtown core. Although it doesn't quite capture the same charm the south side location has created it does do a nice job of creating that old school diner feel.
The menu system is fairly simple: pick a type of burger, the toppings, any additional premium toppings, and optionally upgrade to a combo.
I was fairly confident with my appetite so I decided to man up and order the King Fatty (King sized) with an extra egg with all the fixings. The nice touch that Fatburger provides is they bring the meal out to you like good ol' Dairy Queen.
It wasn't long before I got my meal and right away, grease and fat was just oozing onto the plate. Things to note: the bun looked extremely fresh and moist. My first few bites were a bit disappointing. The burger tasted rather bland. The only distinct taste that stood out were the pickles which gave the burger the familiar tang. As I made my way half way through, I still wasn't tasting anything defining from the burger or patty. The patty actually tasted a little dry and crumbly.
I'm not sure if it was the location or if the quality of the chain has declined but I wasn't floored by the overall taste as when I first discovered Fatburger.
Comparing to a Moxies or a Pub 1905, I would say those burgers would be superior compared to Fatburger. Yes, I would even go to Harvey's (which I think is the best burger for what you're paying for), Dairy Queen, or even A&W for my burger fix.
The King Fatty clocked in at about $9.25 and interestingly enough, you can even get some alcohol with your meal!

History
Established in 1952
In 1952, Lovie Yancey created something unique. A culture. A phenomenon, if you will. She created the biggest, juiciest hamburgers anyone had ever seen. So obviously, there was only one name for them - Fatburger.
Half a century later, while other places are just discovering taste, we're still making hamburgers the way she did. Fresh lean beef, not frozen patties. Cooked-to-order, just the way you want it, every time.
Now here's just a few things to make you drool over your keyboard: onion rings made from real onions. Hand-scooped, real ice cream shakes. Great tasting chili. And fries cooked in 100% cholesterol-free oil. All served with a smile. Fatburger. Distinctive seasonings and attitude since 1952.
