Rainy Saturday and I'm in New West wondering what the heck I'm gonna eat for lunch. But no need to fear, Christine R pointed me and my tummy in the right direction.
The new location on E Columbia has great street parking and a modern but traditional feel to it. Their 9 grain bread, so fluffy and soft; roasted turkey, lots of pepper, mayo and mustard - this is a sandwich that you aim to make at home. And for $4.50 it really can't be beat. However, iceberg lettuce? Really? Bleck!
Service is a little slow, sporadic and disorganized, but exactly what you'd expect from a deli with weekend staff. I had to remind the girls working that they hadn't charged me for my sandwich yet. And, even though they saw me sitting there, they gave me my 'wich in a to-go container. Useful, but not when you're eating in.
Unable to resist, I also treated myself to a pumpkin tart which was perfectly pumpkiny and spicy. And exactly what I needed to push me back into the rain. -

Good quality products. Unfortunately, they seem to use too much egg in their goods. They take a perfectly good fruit pie and ruin it by putting egg all over the top crust, instead of letting it just brown naturally in the traditional fashion.
For some reason, a lot of bakeries these days are using a lot more egg in their products than was the case in the past, which tends to give some of their products an 'eggy' taste.
This could be a four star bakery, but for me at least, the use of too much egg in their goods takes it down a peg to only three stars. If you like overly eggy products, then this may the place for you. -

I just love this place - the food is delicious, from the soups and salads, to the sausage rolls and pasties, to the tarts, cakes and pies. I especially love the round tarts "lined" in chocolate and filled with custard and topped with fresh fruits and berries. (Makes a girl glad there are so many parks in this corner of town - gotta exercise, living near such great bakeries.)
The atmosphere of the shop is also very sophisticated with deep-coloured walls, several non-tippy tables with comfy chairs for eating in, and floor-to-ceiling shaded windows for people watching. Add the eighties-classics soundtrack and cool staff, and you've got yourself a good lil' place for a casual lunch date.Listed in: Bright Lights, Royal City

The perfect cinnamon roles; no icing sugar, perfect balance of sweet and cinnamon flavour. Only if they had coffee.

Best non-homemade pies in town! In particular, they know how to make pastry crust.
