Review from Tim L.
The business here continues to thrive with more and more customers becoming regulars, at least that's what the manager has told me.
I believe it! It looks like business is thriving here with this place getting packed constantly and with business comes money, and with that money they have gone and redecorated the place.
It is MUCH nicer now. No longer looking like the typical Chinese joint that's got a layer of dirt ground into every visible surface. They have nice curtains and decoration, a fresh coat of paint and nicer tables & chairs (perhaps just re-upholstered). The most welcome change is the better separation of the restrooms, no one needs to smell what goes on behind those doors in the main dining area.
Food is still good, but what has substantially improved is the service. Everyone in this place has service on par with Western restaurants. Granted they still "throw" plates and cutlery when setting the table, but that's to be expected in a Chinese restaurant.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Chris C.
This restaurant has seen a fall from grace from its hayday in the 90s.
My family has been going to this restaurant since we moved to Canada in 1994. We used to go there for dim sum a lot. When I was younger, it seemed like I could eat them to bankruptcy in the dim sum buffet. I even vomited outside the restaurant on one occasion from eating too much. We even ate there for dinner a lot. Sometimes we went multiple times a month. My father went there after work with his friends, and we took people from out of town. So, trust me when I say I have a lot of experience with Fantastic Restaurant.
Then things changed. They had a renovation, which made the restaurant look brighter and larger. Since I was away at undergrad at the time, my father told me that my family doesn't go there anymore because the new owner had no respect for service. It's not that they're rude. They just don't seem to have the same mentality for hospitality that every restaurant needs to stay afloat in a saturated market.
Recently, I went back here again for the buffet with a guest, and the food was fair. They do throw plates, but I don't mind. It just wasn't the same as it used to be.
Fantastic has 2 stars from me because there are better options out there with more respect for customers, and the only reason it is so popular is because the Joyce area is growing. There's a minimum amount to use credit cards, which I'm sure is against credit merchant rules, but they didn't enforce it on me. -

Being a Chinese person, I've been to quite a few dim sum places for lunch. This place isn't great. But if you're out just to mainly chat with friends, then it's fine. If you're out looking for Fantasitc dim sum (hahaha, sorry) then this might not be right for you.
The service was efficient, but the waitresses act weird if you're younger or not Chinese. They kept saying everything really slowly for my friends and I (we're 18 years old) cause they thought we didn't speak any Cantonese.. but yeah. I found the rice noodles in soy sauce to be way over steamed, to the point where it just falls apart if you try to pick it up. The vegetarian fried noodles were okay.. nothing special. The veggie spring rolls were NOT fresh. I bet they ovened it from yesterday. All in all.. the food was mediocre. I only come here cause it's convenient and close to my place.
The place is kind of clean. Ish. I didn't wanna go into the washroom.. might be scary. -

Apt name. Great food in large portions, a nice looking place with a big crowd for the lunch dim sum. Everything I have tried has been great.
