Review from Howard H.
A) Yes, this is the REAL Ray's.
B) Yes, the slice really DOES need that much cheese
C) Whadda you lookin' at?
The most essential thing to recognize about Ray's is that is a venue to purchase slices - not whole pies, not anything in addition other than the obligatory soft drink.
On that basis Ray' still rates quite high. The voluminous mounds of fresh real cheese and generous perfectly distributed high quality toppings (should one be so inclined) make each slice a meal.
There is one truly unique aspect to a Ray's slice that has been noted over the decades - they re-heat better than any other slice on earth. Most left over slices from other places are certainly edible for a couple of days, some even border on delicious. There is something about the confluence of molecules in Ray's sauce that manages to successfully transcend the all-important sauce/crust to toppings ratio.
And now, apparently, it is gone. So consider this my culinary eulogy to what once was... -

What a shame another NYC landmark bites the dust. It's getting harder for independents to hang on against the chains and the outrageous rents in NYC.
I'm afraid NYC is fast becoming one big chain driven outdoor mall with no soul or character.
Rays was the first pizzeria I went to where you had to eat the slice with a knife and fork. Unheard of at the time. Their Sicilian was unique with the onion under the cheese too. I now live Upstate and would go to Ray's maybe once or twice a year. I noticed the pizza just didn't seem as good as I had remembered over the last few years though. I don't know if Rays slipped in quality or maybe pizza in general just got better. It was still worth the trip though. These days there's too much emphasis on the thin crust buffalo wing topping nonsense. Over the last couple of years I would buy their frozen pizza which was like $5 or something and take it home with me Upstate. It was still better than what I could get up here on a good day. I'll give it 5 stars for being a true original.

Review from Micah A.
The pizza at Famous Rays was okay. For a New York pizza place, I wasn't wowed. The dough was a little bit too rubbery and there wasn't a great deal of flavor although the flavor itself was very good. It just wasn't rich or strong enough, I guess. It's more of a 3.5 than a 3, but it's more of a round down than a round up. I'd go here again, but eh.
That's about it. Instead, I'm going to review the bathroom. Originally it showed up on my "Have2P" app on the iPhone, which is a really great app for those that pee. It said Famous Ray's had a bathroom, but when I looked around the store, I couldn't find one, and clicked "no" when the app asked me.
Rest assured, worried urinators, that Famous Ray's does in fact have a public bathroom, but to get to that public bathroom, you have to ask permission to go through an "employee's only" door, navigate yourself though a narrow maze and find yourself at a tiny restroom. The bathroom hasn't been updated since 1885. There was graffiti on the wall and fuse boxes where one could presumably play around with the air conditioning while seated. But for a populated public bathroom it was as clean as it could possibly be. It's more of a 3.5 than a 3, but it's more of a round down than a round up. I'd go here again, but eh.Listed in: Cataloging New York

Just because something is original does not make it good. Yes, this is the actual Ray's Pizza on 6th av. and 11th for which all the hundreds of other Ray's Pizzas have ripped the name from.
As to why you would want to take a name from a place that serves up pizza that's only standard is beyond me. Guess that's why we have a million places in this country named Crab Shack.
The pizza here is good enough but falls short of great. The cheese is really good and boy do they pack a lot of it on a slice. Pizza practically melts through the plate and sits in your stomach like a brick just to let you know you've eaten something. The sauce is pretty nonexistant but the bread is where it falls short. Bread is kinda stiff and not too tasty.
Yes, this is the original and also famous, but rule of thumb: If you want great pizza don't get it from a guy named Ray. -
Review from Meghan P.
I love Famous Ray's, and usually get a pie delivered. The crust is how NY pizza crust should be, the pepperoni is crispy, the sauce is flavorful, and they just really pack on the cheese. Some people complain about this. I on the other hand welcome and embrace this abundance of cheese. Unfortunately though, if I eat more than 2 slices, I feel beyond full, so try to limit yourself.
As far as slices go, they aren't that bad for the reheated dilemma we all find ourselves in. The ricotta and pepperoni reheats nicely, so I'd recommend that.Listed in: MMM PIZZA.

We grabbed a few slices of pepperoni + ricotta, pepperoni + sausage and cheese pizza for dinner and had it heated a little bit longer than usual to make it extra crispy. Yummy...!
This place looks older and simpler than the other Ray's closer to Times Square but we were already in the area. I mean, how could you go wrong with pizza?Listed in: Good Eats in NYC

I thought the pizza would be better!!! I went by the other day and had my first bite, the garlic balls were great, but I was surprised that the pizza was already made and a little old. They just put the old slices in and reheated them, so much for fresh!
Sure enough tho, the pizza tasted pretty good for reheated and both slices were cheap and BIG. Id recomend for a late night bite. -

Was passing by this afternoon and had a pepperoni slice.
The service is cool. The guys at the counter are super friendly but to be honest, I didn't like the pizza.
Too much cheese, and no salt. It was a little flavourless... I had to put oregano and a little salt.
The base was ok...
Will go back there and add some toppings to see if I change my mind... -
Review from Heather P.
New York, NY
Best old school pizza joint for a late night plain slice.
The sicilian slice is also great, crispy crust, pillowy soft inside, with a subtle kick from the sauteed onions that they put underneath the cheese.
I'll admit now that I am not really sure, but I have claimed to many that this place is the "Original" famous Rays. Is it? -
Review from C L.
Santa Clara, CA
Supposedly this Ray's was the original original one.
Ray's is pretty busy, so the pizza is always fresh. The plain slices aren't anything amazing - standard NY pizza - but when you add toppings, they add toppings, THEN stack on some more cheese. That's the awesomesauce right there.
It's $2.75 for a slice, and $.75 for each topping.
The place can use a little bit of touch up in terms of the tables (hint: big one in the middle is rickety) and chairs (less slashed would be cool), but for what it is, Famous Ray's was good enough for me to drop by twice for a quick lunch. -
Review from Michael F.
New York, NY
So sad, but two stars here is generous.
As has been noted previously, this is THE Ray's, "The Famous Ray's of Greenwich Village."
Um, not sure how anyone can call this anything but average pizza. For those of you who moved here from elsewhere, a little history (at the risk of dating myself):
This is Ray's. The one, the only, the one that started the trend of "Ray's" pizza places that all now claim to be the "original." If you need proof, go inside and view the original reviews from the NY Times and others. It's THE place. It matters. This is New York. If you think it doesn't, you're from elsewhere and clearly just don't get it. Pizza is important here. It's like going to the champagne region of France and saying "What's the big deal about all this bubbly wine?" DUH.
In my youth, Ray's was a teensy pizza store with 3 stools at a counter. You could barely get in there with a cro-bar. An article came out in the NY Times saying this was the best pizza in the city, and the craze began. At lunchtime, there was a line up the block. All of a sudden, every pizza place was "Ray's" and they all were the "original" or the "famous original" or "original famous" or whatever variation thereof. There is and always will be only one original. It stands at 6th Ave. and 11th St. PERIOD.
Over the next few years, this Ray's started taking over every adjacent store, one by one, until they reached the size they are now. Line forms at the front door. Tables to stand at. It's been that way forever.
Back then, the pizza was good. The crust was right, there was enough sauce, and the cheese didn't resemble cowhide. The pizza was cooked by Italians. The regular cheese slice had onions embedded in the cheese. It was absolutely fantastic. If you ordered a special slice (and god FORBID you order a slice with pineapple on it, my goodness that's just so WRONG. I believe they invented that idea in the midwest or Iowa or some shit like that, but that is NOT NY pizza. Sorry...), they would take a handful of those ingredients (mushrooms, onions, sausage, pepperoni, i.e., REAL NY PIZZA ingredients, my GOODNESS) and put it on the top of a regular cheese slice, take a handful of that great cheese they used to have, pile it on top and put it back in the oven. One slice was a meal for two, practically. This was the origin of the custom slice in NY.
Sometime in the 80's things changed. Not sure when. Perhaps the owners cashed out. The crust got thicker. The cheese changed. The people making the pizza are no longer Italian. They're not even supervised by Italians. It's never been the same. People still go there for the nostalgia of it, but it's like going to the house where you used to live; the house is the same, but the people who live there are different, and they've ruined the place.
I stopped in here because I wanted to be able to write a Yelp review with the fresh taste of Ray's in my mouth. There's nothing extraordinary, unique or even good about this place anymore. It's so completely average it hurts. It hurts those of us who know what the place used to be like.
If you want real NY slice, there are a lot better places. And sorry to be a NY pizza snob, but those of you who call this good haven't had a really decent slice of NY pizza.Listed in: New York Pizza Extravaganza

This is THE Ray's that all other Ray's are based off of.
The famous one. The Greenwich Village one.
And this pizza is a jerk.
But I ate a slice and a half anyway because I was starving. I doused it in red pepper flakes, garlic, basil, and oregano and I still thought it was a jerk.
Rubbery. Not fresh. Mall-style. This is the original spot where mediocre overpriced pizza was invented - congratulations. -

This is the ORIGINAL Ray's Pizza... i remember the experience as a kid when I was first introduced to the spot... This is way pizza was done before pizza became shi shi... brick oven wasn't popular back then and california pizza or wolfgang wasn't even around...
These days I would usually go for a thin slice brick oven or Adrienne's downtown... But the crave does come for just a good thick hearty cheesy slice or two. I don't have pizza too often and the last time I was here was over a year ago... But the memory does last and if in the neighborhood craving a hearty slice, then I'll stop in...
There's nothing fancy about this place and I remember when you had to wait on a long line to get a slice.... Stand around get a drink and eat your slice and go... It's like fuel for a long night out... A true New York experience for those visitng the City. -

Although Ray's is famous for their pizza, I come here for the paninis. The chicken parmigiana one is absolutely heavenly. I love the fact that they add chips and a pickle with it, and yet the price remains the same as it would be in any other panini-selling establishment. There is a little outside seating area, where you can enjoy your food while watching passersby be themselves. Definitely beats watching TV at home and eating cold, tasteless sandwiches.
Who knows, I might even take a ride on the wild side one day and try a slice of their pizza. For now, though, they've got me hooked on their divine paninis...and I really don't mind. -
Review from Josh V.
I was freaking starving waiting for the Halloween Parade to start, so I used Yelp Mobile to find nearby pizza. After navigating the inexplicable maze of police barricades (thus walking about 3x as far as a direct path would have been) my friend and I arrived at the promised land...aka this pizza joint. (By the way, thanks to the friendly local who helped circumnavigate all the barricades to get here, whoever you were!)
As there were hundreds of thousands of people in the area for the parade, it's no surprise there was a line at Famous Ray's. But thankfully it moved quickly and before too long I had a huge slice of sausage in my hand. I wanted pepperoni, but it wasn't ready and I wasn't about to wait any more. Considering the crowds I can overlook this...
So it was hot, fast, fresh, greasy, BIG and reasonably priced. It was pretty much all I wanted.
Now this place isn't going to win any awards for decor or cleanliness; it's pretty divey. And I witnessed an amusing argument between a customer and the staff (including a presumed manager) about using the restroom. The staff insisted there was no public restroom, and the customer insisted that a) he'd used the restroom there before and b) he wasn't "the public" he was a customer. This went round and round a few times and eventually the customer gave in. I just hope he didn't pee his pants.Listed in: A Bite Out of the Big Apple

Tony L. and Donald L. have inspired me to write my own review of Ray's! But I'm going to split the difference and give Ray's 2.5 stars (well, in my mind it's 2.5, on Yelp it's only 2).
Like Donald, I went to P.S. 41 for elementary school and have memories of eating at Ray's during lunch time (yes, 12 year olds were allowed to roam the streets of Manhattan during the school day). Unlike Donald, though, they weren't exactly fond memories.
I was never a fan of Ray's, because like Tony, I felt that the cheese was too insanely globbed onto the slice. To this day I have vivid memories of what I like to call "The 4-Step Ray's Pizza Bite." This is how it goes:
Step 1: Bite into slice and watch as the thick string of neverending cheese expands as you pull it away from you.
Step 2: Feel the hot scalding cheese burn the roof of your mouth.
Step 3: Feel the 1st degree burn on your chin as the cheese finally comes off the slice and splats onto your face.
Step 4: Re-assemble fallen cheese onto slice. Try Step 1 again.
To be fair, I haven't eaten at Ray's since my childhood days, but if the Yelp reviews are any indication, it doesn't look like much has changed. I will give Ray's another go, to see if my memories hold true. And who knows, maybe my 12 year old self just couldn't handle the amount of cheese on that slice. We'll see if my 27 year old self can finally tackle the Famous Original Ray's cheese pizza slice...and avoid "The 4-Step Ray's Pizza Bite."Listed in: Wandering the West Village

Warning: I was exceptionally drunk when I ate here, so how can pizza ever be bad when you're highly inebriated? Answer: it can't.
I walk in on the phone, get a slice of pepperoni. They heat it up, thankfully, and even added more cheese. Maybe they noticed me falling all over myself and thought "that girl would LOVE some more cheese right about now."
The downside was not at all the pizza, which I basically inhaled. The bad part was the old guy working behind the counter flirting with me and telling me he was going on break and we should eat together. Gee golly I would LOVE TO! Oh wait, no not at all. Then I sit down and 2 other douches come and sit right in front of me (plenty of open tables), and are like pretending they are a part of my conversation. Literally, making comments to what I was saying to my friend. I had to ask the peanut gallery to keep it down, and quickly moved on. -

Despite the torn reviews, I decided to check this place out still in search of finding the perfect quintessential NY pizza. After checking out Original Ray's, my search has come to an end.
Their pizza folds nicely, service is prompt, and the slices come extra cheesy and has that salty taste that I enjoy.

Should be called "formerly Famous Ray's"
This was the one that made the Ray's name famous back in the 70's.
Back then they had a thick crust, slightly doughy but still excellent.
At some point they changed their recipe, now a shadow of their former selves they only dissapoint. Strange texture to the bottom of the crust.
Sauce taste like it came straight from a can, Cheese is cheese in name only, that is sub-par.
It used to be the most amazing slice in town, now it's famous only in their minds...... Oh well. -

There was a time that this place would have demanded 5 stars. I went to high school nearly 20 years ago just a few blocks away. My buddies and I would skip by 1/2 a dozen other pizza places just go to Ray's and it was always worth the trip. It had the absolute freshest ingredients, the best sauce ever, and they would even sprinkle a little extra cheese on top of the meat toppings. The crust was perfect and even the fountain soda tasted better than any other place in the city. And the pizza was made by authentic Italians! I ate there my entire 4 years of high school.
Fast forward a few years. I hadn't gone to Ray's for almost 10 years and I happen to be in Greenwich Village with some family and friends from out of town. I suggested Ray's as the absolute best pizza in town. Honestly, I was very disappointed. The pizza was just average. It tasted like any other place you can find in the city. No Italians to be seen. Poor service. Flat fountain soda. I was a little bummed out.
I stop in from time to time to see if they have recaptured their old glory but quite honestly, the real original Ray's is just average pizza now. I can now find better pizza in a Jersey strip mall. -
Review from Khanh L.
I'm not a big fan of pizza,
it just seems like lazy food sometimes, easy to eat, so easy sometimes you feel cheated you wasted a meal on pizza...
Then there's Ray's pizza, worth two meals per slice.
I'm told this one is one of the original "five" original Ray's each different and famous in their own right. I have never been to the other ones... but I 'll tell you now, the bus stops here for me I don't need to go looking elsewhere.
I only have one type of pizza here, the Bari Classic. You will not find slices of it on the pre made counter. you have to order the whole pie. It's quite simple, tomato sauce, sun dried tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella. That's it that's all thank you very much.
The secret is in the sauce, they put a bit more sauce in this pie, and extra garlic, the garlic flavor is unmistakable, makes this pie phenomenal. All my friends whom I have brought here have been converts, they all love it... even non pizza lovers like me... -

I know there is no such thing as the "best pizza in NYC", but this is the best pizza in NYC.
When I lived in the city, my GF lived on 13th St, so I would stay at her place and frequent Ray's often. I was just back in the city for a week and had to eat here 3 times. It is the best pizza in the village. Anyone who says different, probably eats Digiorno's. :-) -

ok I'm 25 and born and raised in Queens and had a wide variety of pizza everywhere really except Staten Island. Pizza, also to mention, is my favorite fast food.
i'll go out on a limb and say pound for pound, this is far and away, the best pizza I've ate. Period. End of story. Game over, thanks for playing.
This place might not be the cleanest, might not have the best seating, etc. but if your about pizza, do yourself a favor and stop by. There have been times I've driven from where I'm at in Queens to Ray's (with traffic 40 minutes one way), with my best friend, just to get a few slices.....yes, it's that good.
I don't care about if this is the "original" ray's, the parking, the decor, the cleanliness of the place and what not. The pizza is amazing, leave your house now and go get a slice. -

This has been my favourite pizza since 1982. I'm basing my 5-star review on the following qualifiers; I always get there between 11 and 12 noon, so I usually get a slice of pie right out of the oven. I always get the plain cheese. I'm sure the freshness helps. You want to get a slice that is still hot, not one that has to be reheated.
I think it's the cheese that makes it, but the sauce and crust combine to make it perfect. Enjoy.Listed in: 5-star Reviews, Pizza

Good but not amazing...sorry to report.
They process their customers efficiently....Starbucks should take some tips from these guys. You get your pizza, you stand at a table to eat, and then you're out. Perfect pre-theater nibble.
The sauce was fine, but not as amazing as John's. The crust was great in texture, but bland in flavor. The cheese was firming up because it was served luke-warm. Maybe I need to go again for breakfast on the way to JFK and try a more fresh slice (the spinach pie looked yummy but stale). -

I only visit this place when my friend, Jennifer, comes to town. She has fond memories of the pizza when she attended The New School just down the street from Ray's.
The plain pizza is one of my favorites in the City. The crust is always nice and thin, as well as very crispy. Sort of reminds me of a childhood pizza place I used to visit in Boston ages ago.
It really is a delight to come here now and again for the plain. I've tried a slab of the vegetable pizza as well - calling it a slice would be wrong. It's good, perhaps too much breaded eggplant.
All-in-all, I like the place and worth a stop for an inexpensive slice. -

PASS. I guess this is ok when you're stumbling back home at 4am drunk and hungry as hell, but otherwise there's sooo many other much better places than Ray's. The pizzas aren't fresh, they've been sitting there under a heatlamp for a while and are only heated up when you order. Nothing spectacular.

I don't understand why there is still a debate over what the "original" Ray's pizza is... I don't know what pizza place in the city first called itself Ray's, but I've always known that this place was the reason why there are now so many Ray's claiming to be the original... this is the place that made the name famous. It seems plenty of people on Yelp realize this as well, but whenever you see news articles and stuff, this place is never given it's due, giving me the impression there must still be a lot of people who don't know what the deal is.
Anyway, I don't think I have ever eaten anything here other than cheese pizza. But the cheese pizza is mad good. They give you huge slices, with tons of cheese, and the cheese is really cheesy tasting, too. It's just really good pizza. I don't know what people are talking about when they say it's not good anymore. Well I was born in 1983 so I guess I don't know what it tasted like back in the day, but I have been eating here since the 80s and as far as I can remember it's always tasted the same and always been good. And I know my dad, who introduced me to this place when i was a child, has been eating there since the 70s, and he never complained about it changing either. I saw one review on here claiming the cheese is only cheese in name only... wtf? I feel like that person must have gone to the wrong place. This place's cheese is always really cheesy, that's what makes it good. -

As I cuss out MTA for not letting us know that the F train is not running on 14th St, I made the trek from 14th St. and 6th Ave. down to West 4 to catch the E. I was hungry and jonesing for something quick to eat. In the corner of my eye I saw "Famous Ray's Pizza". I think it's a divine intervention.
I ordered two slices: Hawaiian and Pepperoni with Sausage. They were great! The dough was thin and crispy on the bottom, the topping taste fresh (it wasn't out for the whole day) and the mozarella is delish.

They have some of the best pizza in the city, but it can be hit or miss. If a whole pie came out of the oven in the past few minutes, they're not gonna reheat your slice, so I'd actually go for a slice that's like 10 minutes fresh because they'll reheat it to perfection. The crust is a little chewy (very foldable), but the end crust is crunchy, making for a nice balance of texture. The cheese slice is very cheesy and delicious. The Famous Meat slice is really good too, but be warned, it's big.
I'd say this is my 3rd favorite pizza place in the city behind Lombardi's and Pomodoro, both of which are in Little Italy. Ray's isn't as consistent as the other two, but if you play your cards right (i.e. follow my ordering advice above), you'll have one of the best slices in NYC.
