Great prices on produce - usually considerably cheaper than Jewel, and a lot bigger selection including unusual fruits and veggies. The deli is extensive and is often half the price of Jewel, too! This market also stocks bakery bread from local bakeries, so you can get favorites easily. AND (drum roll) they always have many checkout lanes open so you rarely have to wait!
Small enough to do your shopping in 15 - 20 minutes. I generally use Jewel now just for dry goods, toilet paper and cat food! The small parking lot next to the building is sometimes full - there is a bigger lot kitty-corner across the street which always has space, and you can push your cart there, if need be. -

i have always enjoyed this market area for a few years. today was the exception to the rule at the fresh meat counter. I wont go into details. BUT I will be curious how it goes the next time. If there is a next time. I would have rated it a 5 except for today.. the fruit is good , produce in general is good, good pricings. but I have to admit... I was very disappointed.
Too many different places to buy good food at to be mistreated. -

This place is great for produce! Very cheap with a wide assortment of items you can't normally find.
Go here instead of Jewel for their over-priced produce. You will save a bundle! -

I've been doing my groceries here for years. They always have a large and fresh selection of produce. I love there deli. I'm always amazed at what $30 can buy me here. Beats Wal-Mart prices (and you don't feel guilty for giving your money to the devil that is Wal-Mart).

Favorite place to grocery shop in the Chicago area. I'm a stickler for cash and getting the most for my dollar, so the hour and half bus ride to get here doesn't seem to bother me that much. The fruit always seems to be fresh. I usually stock up on cartons of raspberries and blackberries (usually 2 for $3), a few pineapples ($1.99 ea), and kiwis (5 for $1) to make fruit salad that a freeze in individual containers for snacks at work..
The veggies are reasonably priced and fresh as well. I remember getting a 5lb bag of potatoes for $1.99 a few weeks ago or cabbage for $0.19 a pound.
The lunch meat and cheeses are priced extremely less than other grocery stores in Chicago. I have gotten pastrami for $3.99 a pound, honey roasted turkey for $4.99 a pound, and American cheese for as little as $1.99 a pound.
Meats are priced well, but I rarely buy them so I wouldn't know the industry norm. Groceries are a little closer to the norm, but still great to complete a full grocery store shopping trip in the Chicago area. -

This is place great. I go to A & G when I need tons of stuff and lots of brands. But for day to day shopping this is THE place. I wouldn't buy paper goods there, or cleaning supplies, or baked goods because they are cheaper at A & G. Milk is also cheaper. But for anything else this is the place.
Very inexpensive produce. And very fresh. Good prices on meat. When I compare the meat on sale with what's on sale at Jewel it is an extra 30-40% less. Great sales in the deli. Once in a while when I'm stopping at the Blockbuster across the street I like to go to the Jewel next door to compare prices for what I just bought at Family Fruit Market. Then I just smile and pat myself on the back for saving so much money. I don't understand why people still shop at Jewel.
The parking lot is too small, but there is another lot just north on the corner of Cicero and Bertau.
There is never a line of more than two people per checker. Good luck seeing that at chain grocery stores!
My pet peeve with this place, they use way too many plastic bags. They put like five things in a bag. I got tired of asking them to stop it and micromanaging the bagging, so I just bring my own canvas bags. -

Favorite fruit market. Prices are incredibly reasonable, and they have everything I need and very little that I don't need, like yucko super-processed foods. Produce is usually excellent, always at least pretty good, and is always well-priced.
Compared to the disaster of a chain grocery across the street, it's heaven.
Price of a non-rotting lime at Jewel: 79 cents.
Price of a good lime at Family Fruit Market: 5 cents.
Also, never have to wait more than two minutes to check out, no matter when. -

My favorite thing at the Family Fruit Market is not, in fact, the fruit, although it is quite fresh and affordably priced.
No, the reason I come back to the FFM week after week is the deli. I've stopped shopping at Jewel, Trader Joe's, even Costco, because the deli prices were beyond insane compared to the goodies one can find at the deli counter of the Family Fruit Market. Our family favorite is the imported Italian ham with rosemary, although the genoa salami and fresh ricotta, mozzarella and feta cheeses are high on the hit list as well. Even my parents, who live in the home state of Whole Foods *and* the Central Market, make a trip to the FFM part of their visit to Chicago, and have been known to pack a couple of pounds of the ham with an ice pack in their carry-on bags. My daughter refers to the FFM as the ham store.
My 4-year-old son, on the other hand, refers to the FFM as the chocolate store. We're all fans of the chocolates imported from Poland and Germany, and the cookies from France and Poland.
I like that I can always get organic or rBST-free local milk here, and every time I go, the FFM's selection of organic produce has expanded. The housemade salsa and guacamole are great, and the local bakery bread is fantastic as well. Other highlights of the store are cheap pasta, canned tomatoes, imported teas, free-range eggs and organic yogurt.
The only things that are more expensive here than elsewhere are cereal, cleaning products and packaged bacon. Otherwise, it's a great destination for perishables and shelf-stable goods alike. -

Just moved into the neighborhood, and I am a HUGE fan. Quality produce and deli meats for dirt cheap. I walked out of there yesterday with what easily would have been $100.00 or more worth of groceries across the street at Jewel for $45.00!!! This will be my grocery store going forward. Thanks fellow Yelpers, for helping me discover this little gem and all it has to offer!

I love love love this place and have been coming here for years. I moved a few miles away, and still trek up the Milwaukee bus line for it whenever I can.
Fruit and produce are hit or miss (usually miss) if you buy them out of season. Everything else is GREAT. Fresh and cheap and good: fruits, veggies, nuts, bread. A great deli with all the usual meats and cheeses, but more affordable. Fresh herbs are A DOLLAR in the summer, usually under $2 in winter. These are farmer's market prices and quality.
Plus, a great selection of Mexican and Polish items. The housemade guac is fantastic, and the European cheeses and snacks are perfect for fancy dinner parties that don't kill your bank account.
Spices, nuts, and some processed/packaged goods round out the selection (to be fair, most packaged goods are cheaper at Jewel across the street). I wish they had a little better selection of eggs and yogurt-- organic please? Because then I really would never need to go anywhere else. -

Know what's fun to do?
1) Go to Family Fruit Market - load up your cart with as much badass produce as you can, until the thing is literally brimming with potatoes and squash and apples and leeks and spices - and then GUESS how much it will cost. Just...throw a ballpark amount out there for what you'd expect to pay for a fucking cart full of produce at any other store. Lowball it if you're feeling adventurous.
2) Then, go to check out and pay and be REALLY pleasantly surprised at how wrong your guess was, and how you paid like, $30 less than you would have at Jewel or $50 less than you would have at Whole Foods for the same amount.
3) Then, do a happy dance and hug your wallet.
4) Repeat every few weeks. -

Find me another place in the city i can buy two week's worth of produce for $20 while simultaneously browsing through Polish fashion magazines. Excellent selection of deli meats, cheeses and random ethnic goodies from more than just Mexico only round out what's already a pretty amazing little market. I can do the bulk of my grocery shopping here and only have to tap Dominick's for whatever meat is like 175% off with the Fresh Card.
It's a little out-of-the-way for a lot of folks, but it's totally worth it. They have so many wonderful vegetables (and herbs, and fruits, and meats, and olives) for rock bottom prices it's almost criminal.
... plus there are pretty, pretty Polish girls working the lanes.
Basically, it's like Heaven, but with more plantains and bok choy and stuff.Listed in: SO MANY STARS. OMFG.

This is the best produce market I've been to since I moved to Chicago.
Whoever does their buying is awesome- they have a plethera of different produce.
Starfruit? Yep!
Fresh Garbabzo Beans? Yep!
Fruits and Vegetables I have never heard of before? Yep!
Their selection is fresh and inspiring.
They also have an awesome chocolate selection.
Everything is pretty inexpensive.
I drive here from the South Loop if its any indication of my love for it, I would rather do that then go to Jewel any day... -

I made my BF make me dinner because he can cook 7 things and I can cook pouring Kix into a bowl. In order to cook said things, he assured me we must head to Family Fruit Market.
Cheapest produce ever. Yes, they are already ripe. But just use what you buy; it's not that difficult.
I'd say you can average $1/pound of produce here, which is incredible. Seriously. I don't know why Dominick's can't figure this out. And, those heads of romaine were the most epic things I've seen since that red pepper the size of my face in Barcelona. Really. I have pictures. -

WOW! I am not sure what i can say that has not already been said about this place. I think that this is going to be our primary store for produce. I almost didn;t want to review this place as I DON'T want to let this little known secret out of the bag. I want to keep it al to myself.
The produce selection/quality/price by far is superior to any other place that I have shopped at. It is all arrainged very attractively and the store is clean although it is starting to look a little run down. I am NOT goign to hold this against them though.
I only went here for produce so i can't comment on the prices of their regular grocery stock. I did take a quick glance at the meat selection and upon a quick visual inspection, the quality seemed excellent and the prices seemed very fair. I want my next visit to be a little more extensive over and above produce needs so i can comment on the rest of the store.Listed in: Where I buy food

Yup- solid 5 stars for all the basic reasons- fresh food, cheap prices, just enough selection of everything to do a week's grocery shopping in one compact store (it's much more than just a fruit market). You can do no better than Family Fruit market.
But my absolute favorite, "icing on the cake", part of shopping here? The music! They play incredible 80s tunes; sometimes the crappy ironic stuff (mike and the mechanics!?!), but often good stuff from my teen disco days too! So if you hear the cure playing and see some dude with his head cocked strongly to the side dancing around in circles with his arms flailing about on aisle 3, don't hesitate to stop me to say hi- you'll be doing me a favor! -

I totally went here just the other day...Spent about $20 on a ton of fruit, a pot roast, some season and some other veggies, maybe taters..
The meat i got was about $6 for a piece i cooked on the grill for 21 minutes total. Delieciously medium rare, great flavor, very fresh meat!
Mmmmm fresh meat! -

This is why I love YELP!!!!!!!!! Last night I was getting my grocery list ready and was disgusted with the high prices at Jewel/Dominicks, so I decided to do a search on Yelp and found the BEST FRUIT MARKET!!!!!!
I love Family Fruit Market!!! It is 5 min away from the Montrose exit off 94 and close to the 6 corners. I went this morning and had a great experience.
The market is very clean and the fruit is so cheap and fresh! I got peaches for $0.99 cents/pound, mangoes for $0.50/each, watermelon for $0.49/pound, etc. I got so much fruit and the total was only $25!! I am so happy.
I just ate a peach and it is so delicious! It is soft and ripe. Perfect. I can't wait to try the rest of the fruit.
I'm sure this place is crazy busy on the weekends (the parking lot is small but there is a larger lot across the street) so I am hoping to come back after work soon.
In addition to fruit, they have a great selection of international candies and food. I am not sure if I would get meat here (only b/c we get ours from Sams Club in bulk) but it looks fresh too. -

so glad to see that the yelp community knows the truth: this is one of the best produce stores in the city....it makes some of those over-hyped places (Stanleys at north and elston for one) seem extra sucky. In the past couple of years they have renovated the store, adding retail space on the south end of the building by eliminating storage. They are clearly trying to attract urban whitey (evening music is mostly 1980s alt rock).
This is a four block walk from my house, so parking is no issue for me, but you people who complain about the lack of parking are LAZY...there is a second parking lot on the east side of cicero half a block north of the market (a former LaSalle Bank site). I see you logan squares/sucktown/wiki park types in your hybrid suvs/minivans sitting and waiting for spots to open up in the small parking lot rather than driving another 200 feet north to the -never more than half full- other parking lot. Whats particularly funny about this is that the distance from the satellite parking lot to the store is no farther than many parking spaces in front of a typical suburban big box!
I love the diverse selections of canned goods and deli items....about the only things i buy elsewhere are fish, alcohol and dog food.... -

I'm honestly in love with this grocery store. I just wish I lived within walking distance of this place. I've been here twice and each time I've been it's been super-clean, well-stocked, and everyone has been very friendly. Their prices can't be beat, really, I think both times I went I got everything I wanted and it was less than $30 (mind you I bought prosciutto which upped my total). Oh, and the stuff I bought lasted me over a week, so really $30 a week is a great buy in my mind.
Side note, if you go on the weekends there's a spill over parking lot across the street. -

This place may have changed my life. All over an onion!
I recently moved to Portage Park, and was flirting with Family Fruit Market. I'd see it when I was leaving Jewel, make eye contact, quickly look away, and look back when I was walking away to see if it was watching me (it always was). But Jewel was giving me what I needed, so I never took the next step.
And then the other day, I was at Jewel stocking up (for once I actually felt like cooking) and needed a white onion. I looked at every single one Jewel had, and they were all nasty. Discouraged, I went home and got a pizza.
And then it happened. I was on my way home today, and saw an open space in the Family Fruit Markey lot. I decided to give it a try, and I'm in love! They had the most beautiful (and cheapest) onions ever! I got some, as well as the other stuff I forgot at Jewel, plus some other fruit and veggies that looked yummy. I still didn't cook (I had leftover pizza I needed to get rid of), but did spend the afternoon looking up new recpies for all the fun food I just bought.
I am a changed woman, and will never try to get fruit or veggies from Jewel again. FFM's was much prettier, and waaay cheaper. Woohoo! -

It's a good store. I'm kind of surprised at the level of adoration on yelp, though. FFM is no better than any of the myriad of small produce/groceries that dot the landscape. Which is not to say that there is anything bad about FFM, just nothing special. I much prefer the Produce Center on Milwaukee, or Valli Produce in Arlington Heights.
If you find yourself on this particular stretch of Cicero Ave, it's the best choice. But not worth much of special trip, IMO. -

Seriously
F*ck off about the parking.
Take your lazy *ss across the street.
This is the best produce market in the midwest! If it's too far for you to walk across the street from the secondary lot, please, please, please shop somewhere else, so I can get first pick of the cheapest and best produce around.
On a different note, the deli is awesome. Stuffed grape leaves for 2 bucks a pound? 4 different types of fresh mozarella? WOW.
Anyone who speaks ill of FFM is simply ignorant, and should not receive full-human status on yelp. When I (sadly) move closer to downtown in July, I will continue to drive up to FFM, despite rising gas prices. The FFM is a huge part of the quality of living for many surrounding neighborhoods.
The best thing going for Portage Park, simply put. -

My wife and I were at the Jewel (Please forgive us, we were new to the neighborhood and didn't know any better!), when I kind gentlemen explained to us the fruit market had the same cold cuts for 1/2 the price of the Jewel.
Of course, this was just the tip of the iceberg. We now shop exclusively at the Family Fruit Market, with the exception of TP and paper towels!
High quality meats and produce, great prices, excellent service.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Thanks members of Yelp for this real gem. Nice people, extra parking on the other side of the street, hard to get fruits and vegetables at prices that are super low (compared to Dominatrix and Jewels). I don't mind paying more for quality produce, but this place has amazing produce, some of the best I have seen in quite awhile, and great prices. I especially love the imported foods they have from Croatia, Poland, Greece, Bulgaria, etc. My only complaint is I wish the store was twice the size so I could do most of my shopping there.
I highly recommend this store if you love fresh fruits and vegetables. Well I am off to cook some delicious plantains I just scored from Family Fruit Market. -

I love the Family Fruit Market!
I've never gotten anything from the deli, but we don't buy from the deli counter that often, the meat is cheap and great, the produce is cheap and usually great (you get your off things, like a bad apple-ha! or some not-as-crisp-as-it-should-be bok choy). But what really puts this place over the top for me is that they have coke in glass bottles made with cane sugar...and THEY HAVE KINDER EGGS! The fat kid in me totally rejoiced when I found that out.
The service is great and friendly too! The place is clean, and has a parking lot...but if you go at a "busy" time parking can be difficult, and since the place is small, it gets crowded fast.
EDIT: I have since tried the deli and I will not go to another deli! They have an amazing selection and they usually have great prices! Even their meat is great-Flank Steak at Jewel is $5.99/lb while at the Family Fruit Market the Flank Steak is only $4.29/lb!! I love FFM!Listed in: Practical Stuff

We love this place. Not only are their produce prices below that of the Jewel across the street, the fruits and veggies are by far much fresher and in better shape. There's always a crowd at the deli case - always a good sign. There is an eclectic mix of ethnic foods, so I've bought wasabi peas, taramasalata, soft corn tortillas, liver sausage, fresh mozzarella...yes, it's all good. I've not been disappointed with anything yet, and I am particular about my produce.
They have a few consistent organic offerings, such as salad greens. During the summer, I was able to score organic strawberries for what I think was $2 for a large box.
The staff is friendly, too.
Do yourself a favor and patronize this market if you're in the neighborhood, or even if you're not. Let's all do our share to keep local businesses in the black! [end of soapbox] -

Oh Family Fruit Market, how I wish you were in my neighborhood!
One of my best friends lives in the area and he and I went on a shopping excursion for groceries last night. I had been here once before, but I must thank him for reminding me this produce utopia exists!
I spent just under $30 and got almost everything I need for the week. They had an impressive array of fresh veggies and their deli counter is amazing! They offer so much more than Jewel and at ridiculously lower prices.
Last time, we made the amazing chicken fajitas and tonight I'm giving the beef stew meet a try. My life would be so much easier if I could walk to this store, but alas, it's SO worth the quick drive! -

It was nice to see so many fruits that I haven't seen in a while. Though it seemed peaceful from the outside, the inside was chaos. People were all over the place but it was nice seeing imported food from all over the world.
I recommend coming here for nice quality produce and some weird European foods!
Didn't find what I was looking for but I came out with a bag of peanut puffs from Croatia for just 59 cents! :) -

I checked this place out based on the reviews of fellow Yelpers, and this place rocks. It is CLEAN, packed with fresh produce, the deli has a great variety, and the prices are cheap. I like the fact that it has a great mix of veggies to choose from, not mostly Hispanic. And the herbs are cheap fir a $1.50 you can get a container of fresh basil or rosemary or oregano, which costs at least 5 bucks at Jewel for half as much product.
The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the parking lot is sooo small. -

I've been coming here since they opened. Once in a while you bring home some average fruit, but that's certainly the exception. Prices are outstanding. The only better quality produce I've ever known was the stuff that mom used to bring home & peel for us, but that was quite a long time ago. I've met people in here from Uptown, & the Fulton Street area, & feel very fortunate to be able to walk there. They always have plenty of cashiers, & things are never out of stock. The only down sides are traffic @ 6 corners, a crowded parking lot (extra lot across the street), & a fair selection of packaged goods that could use english subtitles.
I'd really rather bash them, so fame doesn't bring more traffic, to da neighborhood, but all the yelpers've helped my business, so I'll return the f(l)avor.Listed in: My Neighborhood

I love, love, love this place. I've been going here on a regular basis for months since moving to the neighborhood. Last night I paid just under $20 for delicious fruits, vegetables and nuts. I bring my own bag and by the time they packed it all in, I could barely carry it. The butternut squash is absolutely amazing and my co-worker was admiring it when I brought it for lunch today.
Family Fruit Market is a shining beacon in a city dominated by chain grocery stores (we know who they are). And yes - you will be humming and singing along while you stroll the aisles because the music is awesome. It's weird to be in this store singing with fellow shoppers, but you just can't help it. -

Another good rec from Yelp. Not too far from Logan Square, and well worth the drive!
Picked up a good 4 bags of mostly fruit & veggies yesterday, but also got the rest of my fixin's for Butternut Squash Enchiladas on deck for the weekend (tortillas, sour cream, fresh shredded chihuahua cheese); and like others, spent just under $25.
Also grabbed a container of the bulk corn meal (what a deal!), and I absolutely loved the deli. Got a little bit of sliced turkey, and then stumbled on the greatest find: imported, pitted dates by the lb. I got a 1/2 lb. filled tub, just under $2 (maybe $3.98/lb.). SWEET! -

I've always drove past Family Fruit Market, but have never went in until recently. The produce here is good, with many selections, and fresh. I only come here for fresh products because they literally know how to pick and keep them fresh. I used to shop at Strack and Van Til until I moved up north. Now I live closer to a Jewel that leaves me no other option but expensive and not so fresh veggies. So I decided to check out this local produce store, and I am NOT disappointed. Everything has always been very fresh, crisp, and clean for me. I walk out with a shopping cart loaded with fruits and veggies which don't even cost me any more than $20!!!! And that's if I go all out. Friendly staff. Clean store. However, I wouldn't come here for other products than their fresh produce selection. You could probably spend a fortune on dairy products here. Jewel maybe even be cheaper in that regard. I normally go for other items at Aldi. It just means more errands on the list. Oh well. Worth it.
P.S. I never had a problem with parking. -

Yelp did it again. My friend and I couldn't get enough of this place. We had to eventually leave because we were too hungry and had to get dinner. Otherwise we would've stayed till it's closed at 9pm.
It's open 6am-9pm weekdays, till 8pm on Sat, and 7pm on Sun, so the business info on top needs to be updated (I already submitted changes).
Fruits are extremely cheap here. Vege, too. The vine-ripe tomatoes are just $0.79 a pound ($1.79 w/o sales). You fucking kidding me? Jewel sells it at $3.99!
Pretty good selections of fruit. They do have peach, nectarine, etc. right now (Feb) tho' they're not in season locally. I was so excited to see persimmon! And huge mango at $0.99 each? Whoa.
Lots of stuff you don't see everyday at Jewel or even Wholefoods. Polish stuff, for example. Then all that Goya cookies. Yum. And of course, the cured meat section. Couldn't resist the pancetta.
And a grocery shopping trip wouldn't be complete without taking home a baguette!
