Finding great places to shop since moving back to Winnipeg has been beyond a struggle for me. Being totally spoiled by places in BC like Planet Organic, Thrifty Foods and The Market on Yates, grocery stores here hardly stand a chance. Or rather, I hardly have a chance of finding an equally satisfying grocery shopping experience. Alas, I have discovered that it may be impossible to find everything I'd like to under one roof, and better for me to find a handful of places I like and deliver on what I need.
Happy to report that just up Portage, a mere 5 minute car ride away, is a Family Foods that meets some of my meat shopping needs. I was astounded to find that on Easter weekend I could still find a Tenderloin Garlic Sausage at their deli counter, and extremely happy to discover their own in-house pepperoni... bakes up nice and crispy, with little grease and packs a good punch of spice. I have also been impressed by their prices on chicken, both skinless and boneless breasts and thighs.
Although I wasn't all that happy with their produce section, the success in the meat department definitely puts Family Foods on my list of places to visit on a regular basis.
