Unfortunately back to the doctor for what turned out to be a double ear infection for a family member.
We went on a Friday evening, the clinic was not that busy, so our wait time was short. I was impressed with our doctor, he had a great sense of humour and was very quick and professional.
I am hoping that they read this, I do have one issue with this clinic, the seats are absolutely disgusting. In the waiting area, I do not think there was one seat that I would sit on, it is apparent that they do not clean anything professionally here. I am not sure if a vacuum is run over the place. So for that alone, I can not give you the extra star, sorry, but I would not even sit down. We all stood there, not taking one of the 20 empty chairs. I do have a phobia of sitting on such filth. Not going to happen.
However, the receptionist was very nice and the doctor great and that is the real reason we went.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Family Focus Medical Clinic fills a specific niche in the health-care market: issues that aren't ER-worthy but still need to be seen urgently. I've tried several of the clinics and of them all, the Joe Howe office is my go-to pick.
Although you will undoubtably have to wait in the waiting room for up to an hour (or more), you will get seen on the day you call (or walk-in). This is useful for those of us with GPs who are booked into next year - sometimes that case of strep throat (or **cough cough tattoo infection cough cough**) won't wait to be seen. I've been seen in their office on an urgent basis a number of times, and for several others have simply preferred to be seen same day rather than wait for my GP's office to book down the road.
I've also had my kids seen at the Joe Howe clinic. Although they each had very specific needs, the doctors treated us all compassionately and professionally.
I'm a big fan of the Family Focus Clinic at Joe Howe. The only thing that could tip me into 5 stars would be a shortening of the wait times. -

I have not had good experiences when it comes to Family Focus, Spring Garden Road.
I understand that the doctors operating (not literally) at Family Focus have a packed waiting room and hence, you can only expect 5 minutes or so of their time but nonetheless! Initially when I started off at Dalhousie I didn't know that they had an affiliated clinic. (Thanks, campus tours) So being from out of province, I naturally assumed Family Focus would be the place for me to head if I happened to get sick.
I got sick. I immediately remembered having filed Family Focus away and called to make an apt. I was told that my sore throat, fatigue, assortment of other horrendous symptoms that I won't disgust you with, were all products of the fact that I had strep throat. Ok, sure thing, antibiotics. Did I mention this was late March of my first year at university? 5 or so days later I was worse, now adding an almost completely swollen over throat to the mix, so I headed back. (Foolish, foolish girl) The doctor informed me that the antibiotics were taking a long time to kick in but that if my throat closed in anymore I would need to check myself into the hospital. Great, thanks doc. A week later I had lost 10 pounds and was jaundiced. The wise doctors at Family Focus finally decided to do a blood test and low and behold I had Mono!
The fact that the doctors at family focus didn't think to give me a blood test earlier meant that I got even sicker. (antibiotics are terrible for you if you have a virus and not a bacterial infection) Overall, this meant that I was down for the count for over a month in the middle of exam season. BAD TIMING!! My grades suffered as a result, and I spent 6 months convincing profs to let me retake exams, etc. MAJOR HASSLE. This place is located 2 blocks from Dal and 5 from St. Mary's... they really need to take better care to ensure they are giving students (some of whom are away from home and sick for the first time) better health care.
Granted this experience took place 5 years ago but regardless. My roommate was also diagnosed with tonsilitis at Family Focus last month despite having had her tonsils out as a child. odd, no?
Save yourself the hassle and go to the hospital if you're really sick, or convince the receptionist at your doctors office to sneak you in on your doc's lunch break. Students, Dal Health has a clinic just for you! Check them out. -

Sometimes you just can't get in to see your own doctor soon enough, but what's bothering you isn't serious enough to warrant a visit to the Emergency Room. That's where walk-in clinics like this one can be a big help. I woke up one morning and could hardly hear a darn thing until the friendly doc here syringed out my gummed-up ear canals. (Ew, I know. Imagine how I felt.)
There's no appointment necessary, although you will get in more efficiently (ie with less waiting) if you at least call ahead to find out when might be a good time to drop in.
If you like the doctor you see and you don't have a family doc, these clinics are usually taking new patients, and you can become a regular client of the clinic. -

I went to this Family Focus walk-in clinic today with my friend. She wanted to get her baby's cold looked at by a Dr. Other than the really long wait, it was a great experience.
We've gone to a few walk-in clinics before, but never have a met a Dr. as nice as the one I met with tonight. In fact, I didn't even get his name. The receptionists are very nice and patient. The baby got a little cranky after having to wait more than 1 hour but the staff there just kept assuring us that we were next.
The Dr. did a great job assessing the baby. He gave us a great description of his diagnosis and tell her what she needs to do if he gets worse. He even wrote him a prescription and gave her a lot of details about the drug.
We were very impressed with this visit and we will both return in the future.
