My "quick" visit to Exhibit Cafe, a very quaint and wonderfully earthy cafe accessible from inside the Children's Museum (don't ask) in Kitchener started off on a rough note. I was greeted at the counter and then immediately ignored for close to ten minutes while the manager coached her staff on how to prepare the day's meals and even answered the phone. Um, hello. I'm standing right here. Isn't the "hierarchy of horsepower" in a business: deal with visiting customers first, then phone-in orders, then (if applicable) emails??

As I continued to be ignored, wanting only to order a takeaway drink to quench my nearly unbearable thirst, I grew increasingly impatient and actually left without anyone taking notice or caring. When I realized there was nothing else in the area I came back and the staff meeting was still going on. I actually thought the place might be closed for a second.

ANYHOODLE. When I was finally served I actually muttered "I hope this is worth the wait" and sadly it was not. My Chai breakfast smoothie, which consisted of four ingredients (banana, yogurt, maple syrup and chai) took far too long to make even though there were four people working, and, let's recap: four ingredients. Ginger wasn't listed as an ingredient but it was the predominant flavour, and even I, a rather moderate fan of the rhizome, found it to be too overbearing. If you don't want to be burping up ginger for the rest of the day, don't order the breakfast smoothie.

It's a shame about the first impression because the menu did look intriguing. Kind of like Kitchener's version of Fresh/Juice For Life.
