Sticky Toffee Pudding is still the best, only if you have a major sweet tooth!
Took advantage of the GrouponNOW deadline sale tonite, half-price for this dessert, for just $4, what a steal.
As I customarily do when I get a deal, I splurge on a bit more, haha...ordered the Pan Seared Tuna tataki & French Onion Soup. Nicely seared, very fresh.
Soup was just a bit off than normal...lots of onions, not salty at all, but could've used a bit more swiss cheese...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Good food, attentive staff. Manager is a little rude to her staff.

When we first moved to Vancouver from Toronto, this was one of the first Resto's we went to for Dinner and Brunch. The brunch is priced very well and it is absolutely delicious. The portions are perfect and the quality is superb. On weekends they have live music (jazz style) and it really livens up the quiet neighbourhood of West Point Grey.
The service is fantastic and the owners are very involved. They always make sure that we enjoy our food and we love the complimentary Banana Bread. -

Good service. Would have enjoyed my meal if the owner/manager wasn't berating the staff within hearing distance.

"Eek! Methinks not." describes how we felt after eating there recently. We won't be back, but I couldn't give it just one star, because I'll reserve those for really bad places.
We checked Urban Spoon's reviews and decided it was worth a try since Provence was closed and we were starving. We were no more than three forkfuls into our appetizers when my dinner companion uttered a wary, 'hmmm...'. We compared opinions and found we were in agreement about the quality of our food. The waiter misled us in assuring us the sauces were homemade - if they are, they just mixed some stuff together from a few jars of bought condiments and called it homemade.
I really dislike mass produced food and I like it as close as possible to its natural state. If that's what you like too, don't eat here. -

I have been here on two separate occasions for work lunches. Service is always excellent (the manager even came around to see how we were doing) and the menu has something for everyone (lots of vegetarian options). I ordered a spinach salad which was good, and the presentation of all the dishes around our table was also quite nice.

Sub-par at best, is all I can say of Enigma. My partner and I walked in early bird style with our son, the Q-tip squad just ahead of us, and were promptly seated at the back of an empty restaurant between the bathrooms and the server station. A simple "Fuck you!" would have been sufficient, but we'll take the crap table as we're starving.
The service was terrible - nearly as bad as the coffee - but we did finally manage to place an order for fish and chips.
Crap tartar sauce served with McCain fries and soggy battered cod. What a waste of a nice restaurant, filling it with crap food and jerk employees and all.
To finish off a horrible experience, I waited ten minutes at the bar to pay our bill via Interac while the bartender selected his programming on the television.
This is in an empty restaurant. I don't recommend this place at all.
The staff clearly don't care about the customers - a fact confirmed by the customer service and the food alike.
Steer clear. -

A great place to eat that is slightly off campus. It's good for that lunch to have with everyone from the department when someone is leaving because there is a lot of room. The service was nice and friendly. They were attentive, esp. of our limited time. The menu has a few interesting items on it. And the price point is okay.
Next time I think I would go to try one of their South African specialties. -

Enigma is fairly trust-worthy. I'd shie clear of giving it 5 stars - it's good, but not spectacular. But in the 5 times i've had brunch here over the years, I'd say that it's consistently fresh and cooked properly (surprisingly a hard thing for most Vancouver restaurants to do). They aren't short with the coffee refills, and the breakfasts are large (a friend of mine always requests here or the Wooden Shoe because I'm pretty sure he has a wooden LEG to fill...).
For brunch, the large windows ensure it gets lots of light, making it a lovely place for an hour or two. -

Ahhh enigma, I really have a soft spot for this place. I used to go with my pasta obsessed sister when we lived on 10th and the waiters are always so friendly. The pasta is really done well, the alfredo is very creamy without tasting cheap and plasticy which can happen with alfredo. Enigma has my favorite fries as well and the burgers holy moley!
Most recently I went with my boyfriend, we went at 3 for kind of a late lunch and it was no surprise it was dead because it was such a weird time and the superbowl had just begun.
We were seated on this little lifted part near the door, I loved that spot it was so cozy and intimate :) I had the house burger with added mushrooms, it was really delicious, the meat was seasoned and flavored like no other. It is the only burger that contends with this burger I had at a place called Century dowtown which closed :(
The server was this really nice girl who didnt hassle us or come up to often asking if the food was good, she refilled my coffee promptly and made it such an enjoyable meal, also commenting on how I out ate my dining companion :P she was funny and personable
There is no question I will be back, the desert is also amazing! -

I'm convinced these people just don't like me.
Theoretically, this should be a great place. Lovely patio, sometimes nice indoor area (depending on where they put you), and good food.
The first time I was here, I came by myself with a craving for waffles. They sat me down in this awkward corner and gave me a waiter who pretty much ignored me, at least compared to his table next to me. The butter and jam and such that came with the banana bread was sticky, along with the bread itself. The price was alright that time, but when I came back, I definitely saw that if you order more than one thing, that price goes crazy.
The second time I was back, I ordered oatmeal (which my tongue translated as granola, so I didn't eat too much of it) and asked for the dessert menu (which is a bit odd at brunch, but I love dessert at any time of the day), but she just brought me the check instead. I paid and she didn't say much to me.
Nonetheless, I would probably only come back to get take out, since the food is good, but I just don't belong there. -

I say YAY to this nice spot. Lots of seating, nice inside and a long patio out front.
I just loved our waiter Jon. He was a doll. He got me a Mix N' Match Brunch. He made me feel "A-OK." about my diet restrictions. He was handling most of the floor himself and with limited help, he managed it well.
This seems like a popular spot but we arrived at noon on a Saturday, and had no problem getting the seating of our choice.
Lot's of Egg dishes on the menu including Benne's and a South African Sausage that was really different with hints of Lavender in it (i think?) anyways it was good. The big guy said the scramble was also yummy.
The coffee is not very good, but at least they don't covet it, (over charge.) and they offered free refills.
*OH ! and they have Soy.

Review from Megan S.
Lunch menu here focuses on paninis, soups, salads, burgers, and a few pastas. I thought everything was slightly overpriced for lunch. Most entrees were above $12. While I know that's not outrageous, I prefer staying on the cheap side for lunch.
Atmosphere: nice but boring. Clean wood floors, darker wood tables, and white walls. Again- nice, but boring. It kind of lacks character. -

This might be my fave place for brunch in Vancouver - and that's saying a lot.
Yummy banana bread to start and good coffee. The hungry man's breakfast is what I come for - waffles with fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, hash browns and good sausage (a rarity).
The place can get crammed for weekend brunch, and service can be hit and miss at times. Prices are reasonable for the quality/quantity of food, but this isn't a 'cheap' place for brunch. -

Solid place for a yummy brunch. Love the banana bread that comes with any breakfast/ brunch order. Service is pretty good. Have tried almost every brunch item on the menu. Would probably only not recommend the African sausage or something like that? They also have a nice grilled tomato alternative for vegetarians out there....

Disappointing. I don't like writing bad reviews, but I've had a real string of disappointing meals lately. I went here for a work lunch and was wonderfully excited about the menu. It looked amazing online, and I couldn't wait to try it out.
The waiter was very friendly when we first arrived, but obviously somewhat distracted by the soccer match playing. We were seated at a long table as there were many of us. Some people ordered drinks, but I opted not to indulge. Probably a good thing, as my friends beer to a good thirty minutes to appear and only came after it was pointed out that she hadn't yet received it.
For lunch, I settle on the gazpacho. The food was brought out quickly; however, in the process, the waiter managed to spill half of my bright pink soup over one of my colleagues. When it arrived for the second time, I found that it was a cream based bland tomato style soup. Really boring and thick; not really what I was hoping for. So overall... disappointing. I wouldn't go back. -

I was told the Sticky Toffee Pudding is the best here. And it sure was! I haven't had toffee pudding in a while....I also heard the Molten Lava cake is good too :)

I'm a huge fan of their brunch, and their curries are quite tasty as well if you swing by for dinner.
I usually order the same sort of thing when I do brunch: some kind of bacon/eggs/hash browns/ toast... and Enigma gives me more bacon than any other spot I've visited. That's worth extra points in my book.
Also, their boerwors are really good: all sausages are not created equal. The coffee is okay, but the waitstaff have this sort of sixth sense to refill your cup just as you're thinking, "hmm, I may want more coffee in a second". Not sure how they do it, but I'm glad they do. -

Went for a group lunch on a week day. The place is gorgeous, nice to have lunch in there. The food was OK, I had a beef burger and a soup. The soup was excellent. As for the burger, there is room for improvement. All in all it is a nice place to spend your lunch in.

Great food and great service. Was our first time dining in this neighborhood gem and it will not be our last. The wine list is fine, the food is very tasty and not salty, a common problem with some restaurants. Highly recommended.

I love this restaurant. While, yes, it can seem a bit over-priced for lunches and appies, the owners are a wonderful couple from South Africa and you are pretty much guaranteed to meet at least one of them. The servers are friendly, though they don't spend much time at the tables, and there is nothing that makes the service "special."
The specialness comes from the food - which I think is a pretty darn good compliment. They also have a great selections of wines and are knowledgeable about taste palettes and what YOU might like for your meal. Overall, I am always happy when I leave, having had exactly what i want, without emptying my wallet. -

i went there maybe 2 years ago and i haven't gone back since... Megan is right, the prices are pretty high for lunch... what was most frustrating was that we waited over an hour for 4 lunches... and trust me, the food wasn't worth the long hour wait... it was ridiculous
