Yup - I have found a place that has salt cod fishcakes as the headliner - not those less flavourful haddock variety. This is the way fishcakes should be. They have some internal texture with identifiable fish and potato chunks. They are cooked at high temperature so the have a delightful crispy coating. Now sit them on a plate between home-cooked beans and home-cooked scone (did I mention that they are home-cooked), then you have a dish to fix whatever ails you on a cold February Sunday morning. The rest of the table enjoyed specials which were special, but I can't quite remember the details as they couldn't penetrate my fishcake happiness.

Definitely making the trip out to Emma's again soon.

I just had my second visit to Emma's Eatery and it was just as good as the first. I had the fishcakes again and they were perfect. green tomato chow, beans and an Irish soda biscuit.
It's a pet peeve of mine to be asked as soon as (or before) I sit down what I want to drink. On this occasion this did happen and I found it annoying but easy to overlook.
Thanks for the great food, I will be back for sure.

When we go to Emma's Eatery, it's a treat because it's welcoming and the food is as good for the mind as it is for the belly!

I am not lying when I say everything looks good on the menu but I can only try one thing at the time, every time I go.  I  seam to stuck to my favorite witch is eggs, fruits, taters and a toasted biscuit with home made jam.  The presentation of the food is delectable!  The French Toast are to die for and I absolutely love the fish cakes benny!  My husband sticks with the meaty breakfast.

It's romantic and I love that their is always daisies on the table. The place is homy, simple decor, welcoming and the windows offer lots of sunshine.  Who cares if there is no curtains or table clothes because I hate when a small place changes to much and then it loses it's special something something!  It always smells good because of all the great food cooking non stop and that is what it's all about!  The smiley staff go out of their way to make sure we get great prompt service even when very busy.

    I love Emma's Eatery!!

So a couple of weekends ago, Boyfriend and I and friends hit up Emma's for breakfast. It was a bit of a random choice, but not far from downtown Dartmouth and it was a sunny morning, so the drive was really quite nice.

It's a great little place, and a nice change from some of our regular places. The space is large and bright, and lets in a lot of sunshine. Staff are welcoming and service is quick and efficient, even when it's busy.

Boyfriend didn't stray from his usual (bacon and eggs), but I got the special of the day -- a frittata with mushrooms and leeks. It was delicious! Love that they try to source local ingredients, and they offer an array of locally prepared jams and jellies for purchase as well. That always makes me feel like I'm in a small town, it's a nice touch for sure. I think the only complaint I had was that the hash browns were a smidge underdone -- the flavour was there though, just needed about another 10 minutes of roasting time in the oven.

Excellent choice for anyone looking for brunch in Dartmouth, and a great addition to the Passage.

Sure, Emma's might be a little off the beaten path for some of you peninsula peeps but I have to say it was just delightful from start to finish! Gas up, take a lovely drive along the water, and consider it a Destination Brunch!

The interior of Emma's Eatery is far brighter and cheerier than the outside would lead you to believe. Nice yellows and greens make every visit feel like a sunny day and they've made the most out of a small space without overcrowding diners with tables right on top of each other - although it may not be the best spot for large groups. Best of all? There were plenty of seats to choose from during my Saturday visit. Brunch without waiting is the way to my heart.

Our server checked in multiple times while I waited for my co-conspirator, making sure I had a full glass of water and anything else I needed. Questions were answered, recommendations were made, and substitutions were handled with ease!

The menu is an interesting mix of comfort food and east coast cooking - from all-day breakfast and weekend brunch specials to award-winning fish cakes and a feature jig's dinner. Prices across the board are incredibly reasonable ($5 for two fish cakes? Yeah. Five bucks) too which is always a treat! We went with the Eggs Benny special (spinach instead of ham), and the French Toast.

And then things got really good. I'm talking REALLY good. Portions were huge. I mean, the french toast was just ridiculous with three massive, thick slices. The Benny plate was full to the very edge with homefries and fresh fruit alongside the main feature which I believe was sitting on freshly made English Muffins. The homemade Hollandaise sauce was delicious and light, avoiding that post-brunch coma that I routinely fall victim to.

If I absolutely had to pick out one area for improvement, not that there really were any, I found a couple of my homefries a little smokey. But we're talking like six out of the entire pile. And clearly I still ate them. What? It takes a lot to keep me from eating carbs, you guys.

I loved that the owner and head chef came out to check on us after our meal too. There's something to be said about investing time in getting to know your customers and it never goes unnoticed by me!

Well..where to start...hidden in an obscure little strip plaza in eastern Passage is not where I expected to find Emma's Eatery, especially after looking at the website...obviously stock photos were used as there were no table cloths or linen shiny "Silverware" to be found. Don't get me wrong I am no prude but when I look at a website I expect it to be a representation of the actual locale.

That being said the food was very good, all local, from free range eggs, to local bacon etc. The French toast was generous with thick slices of French bread dipped in batter and served with NS Maple Syrup...and for just $10.00 you can't beat it. The coffee is Organic Free Trade and is quite tasty....we also had dessert, (They only had one...disappointing) and opted for the Bread Pudding with Creme Englaise, quite delish.

I gave Emma's a four and almost a three and a half,  for one reason and one reason only, yes the food is good, would I go that out of my way again to dine there?...perhaps not...but I digress...this little "Labour Of Love Bistro" is looking very  tired and rough around the edges...its nothing a real scrub down and a quick fresh coat of paint wouldn't clear up. I think we often see this happen to smaller establishments as the owner is in day after day and doesn't see the place becoming haggard and a fresh set of eyes is sometimes all it takes to give the place a shake.

Lastly I dont know why restauranturs do not put more fabrics and plants in, they absorb sound and make it a more enjoyable experience, we felt the same above average noise level when didng at Fid.

Emma's is a little gem in the rough...just needs a polish.

Emma's Eatery is a delightful part of the Dartmouth brunch scene. When you walk in, you are greeted with a bright, cheery and airy space. Not very big, but they maximize their space. It's been busy every visit, but I've never had to wait for a table.

They focus on locally sourced ingredients, which is nice to see. This is no greasy spoon, but it's a reliable spot for yummy, not too heavy brunch. They've changed their menu since my last visit, and I notice their signature benny dish on an Irish soda biscuit is no more. In fact, there no longer seems to be an eggs benny option at all, though a classic eggs benny was often (if not always) a special of the day. I've tried both the signature and the traditional eggs benny, and must say I  preferred the latter. I've also had their traditional breakfast with a side of baked beans, and the "talk of cow bay" french toast. Good food, coffee and service - what more do you need?

A hidden gem!  Great food locally sourced made for an awesome eggs Benny and chow with the fishcakes.  Scottish biscuit was a delicious side too.  Top it off with friendly, helpful, quick service.  Definitely a place to revisit!  Tiny, cozy, the kitchen is small but worth it!
