Review from Suzanne R.
Emerald Lake Lodge is my favorite of the CMR resorts. No Lake Louise endless bus lines with gaggles of day trippers. If you find yourself at Emerald Lake, you are guaranteed solitude and quiet.
Approximately 5 hours west of Calgary, Emerald Lake offers a multitude of hiking trails of varying fitness levels, excellent food served in several different restaurants and romantic cabins.
During my first stay here, I found myself in the midst of the hottest spell in 100 years. Coming from Houston, I found 33 C. tolerable but with no fans in the room, it was interesting.
My favorite hiking trail was up to Hamilton Lake. After a few hours, you find yourself above the tree line and beside a crystal clear lake. Other hiking trails will take you to lower lying glaciers and streams. The view of the Canadian Rockies took my breath away.
The food was spectacular. A couple of veggie entrees were on the menu, but not for me. One of my favorites was the elk medallions with a blueberry compote and homemade spatzel. Wines are not quite up there in there in selection, but that was okay because we had brought a couple of our own Syrahs to better enjoy the game on the menu.
The bar upstairs has a wonderful deck to sit outside and look at the stars along with a great selection of ice wines. Living in Houston, sometimes you forget they are up there.
You can order a lunch to be packed to take on your hiking trips with you. Place an order the night before and pick it up after breakfast.
It may take you more than a few minutes to stop your electronic jones-ing with no wi-fi, cell reception or tvs in the room. It doesn't take long and you won't find yourself missing your modern contraptions.
The people who work here are so nice you begin to wonder if they put something in the water at the employee compound. Most of the workers are kids who have come west for the summer to earn money.
Pack your hiking boots, socks, poles or other necessities. You can go into Banff to buy these items but chances are you won't have the US-Can dollar advantage.
Emerald Lake is about the most perfect blend of comfort and rustic you will find up here. Comfortable cleans rooms and great meals to come back to after a long day on the trails. -

Perched on the edge of spectacular Emerald Lake, the original Emerald Lake Lodge was constructed in 1902. It was purchased by the current CMR owners in 1979, restored, and then reopened in 1986.
The Lodge (and Cabins) are well located and maybe to preserve part of the ecosystem and the tranquillity, you have to park your car and take a shuttle bus to the main building (the only historic Lodge structure left). Form there, staff will take you to your cabin in golf carts. I chose to walk in and stop at the bar for a drink.
Built of hand-hewn timber and featuring massive stone fireplaces, the Lodge includes an elegant dining room, quiet reading and sitting rooms, and conference facilities. The lounge features an oak bar salvaged from an 1890s-era Yukon saloon, but the payoff is sitting out on the deck and taking in the stunning view. It was one of those special times when I felt awed and small. -

We spent a day hiking around this lodge, and had dinner in the restaurant. I can't comment on the rooms, but the location is incredible, and the food and service in the restaurant quite good. The rooms all overlook the beautiful lake. There is a great hike around the lake.

A - List. Recommended. You will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful and serene location as is Emerald Lake. Let's face it. You could pitch a tent here and still be blown away. The lodge compound is visually stunning next to the lake. The rooms are clean, well organized and still in need to renovations. The fireplaces all work providing there is dry firewood. The hot tub under the stars is an experience most people should parkake of. The chef and food are first rate. Dinner overlooking the lake is filled with ambiance and great memories. There is a pool room on the second level of the main lodge. Service is good and they hire mostly the young travel-and-have-some-fun types. I am going back for my 4th stay at the lodge next year. If you are looking for non-stop action and bling bling, this is not for you. If you are looking to book a stay at the Lodge, I recommend you phone around, check the internet and at the end of your search try the website known as Skoosh. I found savings from 10 to 30% savings over booking directly with the hotel. This is an Incredible place. Expen$$$ive.
