10 reviews for Elwood's
All Reviews
I love love love Elwoods! Whenever friends and I are up on Broadway we prefer Elwoods to the rest of the nearby pubs (though the competition is not incredible..) I used to live about 3 minutes from Elwoods so i know all about it - super friendly service, late-night kitchen with yummmmmmmy food, and pretty average drink specials (which is good enough for me).
Faves: their ceasars are cheap every day, and their veggie burgers are delicious. Also, on Sundays they have 2-for-1 appetizers! In the summer when they open the garage door on the patio and have the bar open-air, it's even better.
I went in for a beer and happened to be famished but (as a vegan) predicted that I'd have to resort to chips and salsa. Vegan pub fare is rare in Vancouver and even though many offer a veggie burger; it's usually not vegan.
So my tummy was happy and I was impressed when I saw that Elwood's has a vegan burger. And it's made in house. (99% of the time, at a pub they'll use commercial ones) And it's creative! It's a soft patty made with veggies and grains, and tastes kind of like hummus. I love veggie burgers that don't try to taste like beef, and this one was really nice. You can also add toppings so I hit up the banana peppers and my friendly server offered to put guacamole on it in place of the mayo. Yes, please!
If you got "that one spot", it'd be a great place to watch a 'nucks game, but otherwise I can imagine it being too crowded. It's totally dungeon like, but whatever, sometimes dark pubs are nice. Everyone looks better anyway.
I'd love to see more micro-brews on tap. But regardless, next time my friends and I are looking for a drinks spot in the area, if I'm hungry I will certainly sway them to Elwood's.
Not a style of 'pub' for everyone. Has the atmosphere of a 'boozer' - a great venue for drinking too much, so really aimes at the reckless young and the old, hardened drinkers. Customers behave a bit rough, and staff are perfunctory. With so many better places in Kits, I won't be back.
Elwood's has always been a trusty haven in times that you just want to grab a pitcher or three and gather round the old banquet for some quality catching up with friends. The seating is extra squishy and high. The lights are low. The music selection is loud enough to filter out other people's conversations, but quiet enough so that you can still hear each other cackling across the table. The delicious pub fare is served in delightfully generous portions. There is never a shortage of regulars lining the bar. It's good low-key fun, but...
Unfortunately, a but has presented itself upon Elwoods. Sometime between my last visit and the one before that, a bunch of Jameson elves must've snuck in and splattered the logo onto everything. I'm talking Jameson flags, a huge painted lady cheersing you with Jameson, Jameson bottles lining the wall, Jameson bar mats, Jameson banners, you name it! I think that after a few drinks, I went home that night and even had a Jameson dream.
Elwood's is open late. Elwood's is narrow. Elwood's is awesome.
from the weird eyeball painting to santa with the hookah pipe, this place sets itself apart from the kits/broadway bar scene. the staff is always great, especially when you're at the bar.
the pub fare is good -- yam fries, poutine, etc
standard nightly specials keep it within a moderate budget
Listed in: My fave place for drinks
Elwoods is my favorite last stop before home as the bar stays open until about 2am every night. I'll attribute it to listening to Hayden's Elk Lake Serenade album too many times: I've developed a keen bias for anything that reminds me of a woodsy cabin.
It's unfortunate the patio can't be open later than 11pm although I love when the staff tries to corral people inside the tiny bar and close the garage door at the front.
The salsa, however, is pretty much purified garlic. So if you're on a date or really want to speak to any human over the next day or two, it's best to avoid it.
Awesome place to drink and eat with friends. Simple, fresh, cheap food: I suggest the Guiness burger - topped with Guiness-smoked cheese and a massive onion ring, and a heap of fries. Always cheap beer: Pilsner is $4 a pint every day. Friendly and fun staff. Best pub on broadway!!!
Just went back to Elwoods and it turns out they have new owners and I'm guessing, a new chef. Portions are smaller and the burger was not that good. The bun was heavy and tasted like yesterday's bread. Fries tasted like they were from frozen. Yikes. Really sad that they have gone downhill because their burger used to be one of the best. Oh well. Nice place otherwise, but I won't be eating there again. Why does a new owner thing it's a good business move to server worse food???
My first and only experience with Elwood's was pretty sub-par. We were sent there for a married friend's birthday and his chance to get away from the duties of wife and child. Well, Elwood's wasn't quite the sweet party we expected.
It's an alright enough woodsy, folksy pub the size of a postage stamp. It was almost completely deserted the night we came though the crowd picked up a little later on.
What was striking though was the fact that the prices were pretty high and the service was epically slow considering the size and emptiness of the bar. It could definitely be a nice little neighborhood spot if it weren't for that. Maybe we weren't 'regulars' so we didn't know the tricks of the place but it was overall a pretty blah experience.
They did have a good selection of booze and the food was alright but, yeah, I wouldn't bother with it again.
Elwood's is my top pick for Broadway bars. Mind you the category is pretty weak, but here fun is had. Although quite long and narrow, I have never been bothered by the close quarters. The atmosphere is upbeat, the service is great and the drinks are cold. The music tends to be mellow but loud. I wouldn't make this my weekend destination, but it does the trick for a pitcher once in a while. On weekends the Kits crowd always packs these bars. If you're looking for more sedate night, best avoid this spot on weekends.
