This is a Hungarian Bakery, likely started by Hungarians fleeing the revolution of 1956. I am guessing at this though.

The original couple sold out a few years ago and it is now run by a family from China, I think.

This bakery still makes many traditional Hungarian baked goods. What I love about this bakery are the fresh sandwiches. They are made on freshly made Portuguese buns and are very good and only $3 to$3.25. You can also get Hungarian goulash soup and a bun for $3.50.

There bread, buns and focaccia are all very good and very reasonably priced. Most of their pastries are merely okay, in my opinon. I do not think that their cookies are good at all, in fact, they are of poor quality.

So, if you want a quick and really cheap lunch stop in for a sandwich or a soup of Hungarian goulash.

While nothing is decadent, and the ingredients aren't of the highest quality, Elizabeth's bakery is one of the best pastry and sandwich stores in the neighborhood. Baking all of the classic small store items like chocolate croissants, poppyseed squares, and chocolate chip cookies, it maintains some of the cheapest prices and is very popular with coffee drinkers looking to buy their side dish ahead of time.

There are also specialty items that cannot be found anywhere else, like delicious cheese danishes, 4 different kinds of sausage rolls, and lifelike Spongebob cookies for the kids. The people working there are always very friendly and prefer to keep things moving, keeping the line-ups short.

Simplistic, with as little ambiance as there is seating, Elizabeth's is the place to stop and get something on your way to work to prevent the coffee gut rot from hitting you at 11am.

This place is OK. That's about it.
They have cheap prices and a lot of variety. Although, I believe they have just increased most of their prices.
The downfall - nothing is very special there. The bread, cookies, pastries, and sandwiches are all just ok. Mediocre.
Also they charge you extra if you pay debit or credit. No matter how much you are spending. I picked up some sweets for a party tonight, and after sampling them, I think next time I will go somewhere else. Who really wants to eat dessert and say: "well this is alright, I guess."

This bakery is one of many in the area and nothing about it really beckons one to stop in, but a co-worker recently turned me on to one of her secrets. While you can grab a cookie or pastry anywhere along Commercial Drive, you don't often find a freshly made sandwich for under $3.00 ($2.47 for most varieties). This has turned into a quick stop for me on those days when I didn't pack a lunch and am in need of something quick. There is always a variety of choices and all I've had taste nice and fresh. They come on a fluffy, buttery, fresh baked Portugese Bun which makes them all the more tasty.

I've also purchased a few different baked breads and treats from Elizabeth's Recently and while none have been mind-blowing, all have been good quality and fresh - and cheaper than most other bakeries in the area!

    Elizabeth's is indeed A-Ok.

Prices and pastry varieties circa 1982.

Great for picking up inexpensive, cream-filled anything and lunch to boot!
