I'm on the patio right now, enjoying a cold Alexander Keith's - in a nice, clean glass. Service is a bit slow, but that's OK. It's extremely busy; after all it's the Fringe Festival. Even the servers are on the fringe - trying to keep up with the fast pace of thirsty theatregoers. Edmonton is a different place for 10 days during our first-rate international festival. If I were to put Edmonton on a postcard, stamped and addressed to the rest of the world, it would be a snapshot of Whyte Avenue during our beloved Fringe Fest.
I always like coming to the Elephant & Castle. It's a clean, shiny, softly lit English pub with a wide variety of beer and good pub fare. But during the Fringe it's a people-watcher's sample platter, a veritable slice of E-town, humble, oil-rich, real, rugged and oh-so-Canadian.
The average age of a person on the patio here is normally about 29, but during the Fringe, which kicked off yesterday in its full glory, the average age is 40+. People who wouldn't normally hit Whyte Ave. and party on the patios of this hip club-goers main drag are relaxing and catching the vibe, like it was their living room during Super Bowl.
My sweetie and I finish our beer, and as if on cue our lovely waitress arrives, flushed and enquiring. Of course, we will stay - for one more round, maybe two...after all, the curtains don't fall until 2 a.m. and if this world is a stage then I'm convinced we're players in some of the best theatre in town!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I had heard that this was a nice pub with good food...
So i went there on a lunch date, and was not impressed! There was hardly anyone there, which is fine with me . Its nice to have a nice quiet place to enjoy food and conversation. One would think you would receive top notch service in this case??? Not so! We were brought the app, drinks and meals all at once??? Which is not what i asked for. Then our waitress did not return for an hour? My drink had long since run out, as had my interest in the pub and the company i was with haha..
I had a roast beef stuffed yorkshire pudding. The roast beef was old and dry, gravy i am sure came out of a can. Also tried deep fried pickles for the first time. What a let down! I had heard great things about them, but was not impressed. Kinda soggy...
So with the combo of crappy service, and less than average food
I believe 2 stars is fair.... -

As a fan of the Elephant & Castle downtown, I figured I'd like this place, too.
Well..........yes and no. While I like the fact that it didn't appear to be all that attractive to the usual hordes of annoying 18 - 25 crowd that I normally want to grind into dust beneath my boot heel, the exceptionally loud music was kind of a buzz kill. At times I couldn't hear my friends talking to me. At one point, a guy whom I took to be the manager stopped by our table (located right by the giant speaker) to apologize for the volume level and explained that since his iPod isn't "harmonized", the volume fluctuates and they have to adjust it manually. Fair enough, but it was still a pain in my........ears.
The food that I sampled while I was there was ok - not bad, but nothing special, either. I would eat here again, but only if I was simply hungry and wasn't looking to be impressed.
I'll most likely be back, but I intend to sit farther away from the speaker next time. -

The Elephant and Castle is an English pub - part of a chain of about 20. It's an easy fallback whenever you're dining/drinking with somebody who isn't terribly adventurous with their taste in food.
On weekdays between 5 and 7 PM, the E&C offers a number of its appetizers for only $5 per plate. As such, I ordered some crispy, dry ribs, which were a little too crispy for my tastes. The dry rub lacked the flavour I desire, but I enjoyed the bbq sauce which they served with it.
To add some greens, I ordered a caesar salad.
The beer selection on tap is decent, but left me wanting more. But I am picky.
Service is friendly as well. When the restaurant mistakenly served me a garden salad, they gladly fixed up a caesar salad for me. -

I've been here a couple of times and really like this place, especially given its location. Of course, on Friday and Saturday nights, this place is just great but I've actually enjoyed visiting this place a lot more on a Thursday night or perhaps even a regular week night.
What I like about Elephant & Castle is that they have an unpretentious and traditional Brit Pub thing going (check out the name, for starters) and with regular old pub food, a good selection of beers - not great, but definitely good - with nice music and a good pub atmosphere. On certain nights they have small touring and local bands that perform there, which is actually great. I like low-key live music mainly because it livens up the atmosphere and at the same time doesn't have the social contract of having to give it a 100% of your attention.
I also appreciate the fact that they have two storeys, giving the upstairs area a more private feel, yet with the liveliness of the pub. Upstairs, actually, they have a good pool table and it's free (or very cheap) to play pool here, provided the table's free.
My main complaint with this place is that the fish & chips, at least on the one occasion I had it, was just about o.k. It wasn't bad as such, but when it comes to fish & chips, if they're not really good, one tends to feel that it's just a lot of fried food that you're stuffing in for no apparent reason. I would certainly try it again, but will be a little careful to share it with like 4 people.Listed in: Whyte Ave

I had called Elephant & Castle in the morning, and asked if they were going to be showing a specific champions league match, and they told me that they would be. Got there, and was told they won't be showing it and that they can only show one match, as all the TVs have to be on the same channel. Wasn't too upset, because after looking around, all the TVs were awful anyways. Left, went to O'Byrnes where they happily set one of the TVs to the match I wanted.
I've been here before once or twice just for food/drinks. The food is very standard, nothing special. Prices were acceptable, but a little high for what you get.
I likely won't be going back to this pub. -

I really love sitting on the patio in the summer and enjoying a nice beer while people watching. I've ate here a couple of times before and the food is always consistently good. The service is great...even when it's really busy the waitresses don't act frazzled like some places so you don't have to feel uncomfortable asking for another drink or the bill.

This is a decent pub, serving quality food and cold beer. We stopped in on a Saturday night and it was dead. We enjoyed the meal however, and the service was great.
The waitress took my craziness seriously and started mixing two of my favourite beers together to a less than successful outcome. But I drank it anyway. At least she tried....that's the right attitude to have.
The prices were reasonable and we had a pleasant meal here. I recommend giving it a shot. -

Went here on a Sunday afternoon. They had $4 sleeman pints as a drink special which is a great price. They also had family guy reruns on the TV instead of sports which is awesome. Upstairs has a pool table.
I saw recently they put out a nice patio for the summer which I'll be checking out. I like how their patio isn't on the busy side of the street unlike Hudson's. -

This is not an English pub. It's an American chain based in Boston.
I'm quite sick of this place. Despite what people thing, there are better places to watch soccer on Whyte like O'byrnes or even Hudson's that have better beer, better service and better food. The food here is horrible.
There is nothing up-scale about this place.
The TV screens are poorly positioned and old. The bathrooms are in a sorry state. They tried to charge me a dollar more for breakfast than the price on the menu once. I haven't once eaten here where they actually got my order correct. They treat their patrons rather poorly esp. when it's World Cup time. If you have to go to a pub to watch soccer, there are other places that have the morning liquor license.
