Los Angeles, CA
I have been coming to this place for many years now. Can I just say that the chips and salsa are awesome. The chips are whole round corn tortillas that are fried, which you break up and eat...Tasty. The salsa is one of the best around. The food here is very consistent and good.
They serve carne asada tacos, hard shell beef tacos, potato tacos, enchiladas, tortas, burritos, breakfast dishes, you name it they probably got it. All of their food es muy bien.
My favorite dishes are the steak taco combination plate with rice and beans, and the vegetarian jr. burrito. The steak tacos are served with lettuce and guacamole on soft corn tortillas. The jr burrito comes with enchilada sauce and melted cheese on the top with huge scoops of sour cream and guacamole on the side.
Heads up, they have a small parking lot in the back which has about 6 spaces. Most of the time you can find parking in the lot, or else you'll have to find meter parking on the street.
Great reasonably priced Mexican food! -

I tried this place yesterday and was pretty disappointed. I came with two other people and the meager portion of complimentary chips and salsa we received when we sat down was totally insufficient for three people, even if it was free and merely intended to whet our appetites. We asked the waitress if we would be charged for more chips and salsa. She abruptly said "Yeah." and ran inside (we were seated outside) before we could tell her whether or not we actually wanted more. She ended up bringing us extra chips and salsa that we never ordered and that we would be charged for. We didn't complain because we probably would have ordered them anyway had she given us the chance to but it was still very annoying.
I ordered the Jr. Super Deluxe Burrito. The beans were kind of bland. The meat was kind of bland. It had potatoes in it which I disliked because there were only a few small pieces of potato and they were mealy and contributed nothing to the burrito. It was almost like they were in there by accident and I suspect that that may have been the case since all of the other ingredients were listed on the menu. The burrito mostly just tasted like the red sauce it was smothered in. The fact that it was covered in cheese very narrowly saved it. I was also disappointed by the guacamole. I'm a guacamole fiend so if a place has good guacamole then I won't mind too much if they have mediocre everything else. The guacamole here wasn't terrible but it also wasn't very good.
I can't really recommend the place and I probably won't go back. If I want Mexican food for a decent price that actually tastes good, I'll go to Campos. -
Review from Zandra E.
I can say this place is OK. It is not the Tex-Mex I love, but hey, I can go home to Texas for that.
My friends and I decided to eat here after finding out the Soup Plantation in the Marina was no longer open. They had the idea of El Tarasco next and I was all in. I was really kind of excited about the place because it looked like a bit of a dive and it was in a busy part of Venice. We went in, sat ourselves and before we could blink had chips and salsa delivered by a sweet waitress who then took our orders. Let me just say, the salsa at this place is totally delicious. The chips were just okay.
For my entree I ordered Beef Enchiladas with Re-fried Beans and Rice. At first I was a bit confused with the flavors, but my palate adjusted quickly. The food was interesting because the techniques and flavors were definitely from a different part of Mexico than what you experience even at authentic Mexican restaurants in Dallas. I remember experiencing this once before while visiting Los Angeles and San Diego. Anywho, the beans really needed more seasoning. They came off very bland unfortunately. The enchiladas were hot, had a fresh taste to them and although they were missing a flavor level and once again, were on the bland side. I must say that I would definitely like to hit this place up again to try a few other entrees and at their price point, I can say that it will definitely happen. You never know, I just may find something with flavor and a bit of heat. -

AWFUL -- AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
The Staff:
EASILY the least friendly staff of any establishment, mexican food or not, that I can think of - I always feel like I'm hassling them. Every time...yes..literally, EVERY...I have to ask 3 times for water. Never any smiles, never any chitchat -- just tonight (the catalyst for this review), the waiter didn't look me in the eye, respond with more than one word (NOT including "thanks"), and prepared my food so fast there's no way it was fresh. As I was leaving I turned back around and saw the reason: the Lakers were on. He was glued to it and wanted to get me the F out of there. For $12. Wrong section but may as well state it here -- THIS IS NOT CHEAP FOR F'ING TACOS & BEANS!!!
The Food:
Tacos are like coffee and Honey Nut fucking Cheerios...nearly IMPOSSIBLE to screw up. I mean let's get serious, the entire mexican cuisine is basically a variant of the bean-rice-meat-tortilla combo. The chicken is toothpaste-white and absolutely flavorless, the shell (crunchy) was the worst I've ever had -- half of it was floppy like a wet sock, the other half was okay but just...strange colored. The guacamole is awful. Just no love put into anything. "But they have chips ready-to-eat!!" -- Yeah, and there's a reason. Just look at their listing in LA County Public Health directory and you won't be raving about food sitting on unsanitized counters for days on end.
The Solution:
VIVA FRESH!! Right up Washington, TWO BLOCKS east, on the North-hand side. MY FAVORITE place that I only recently discovered --- the friendliest girl (usually) working there, and my favorite crunchy tacos on the entire Westside. Better than Tito's Tacos, La Cabana and any other place considered the best. Go to Viva Fresh now!!!! -
Review from Kislev A.
My butt hasn't even landed on my seat and the server had the menu, a basket of chips and a bowl of salsa on the table in front of us. She quickly took our drink orders and left us to peruse the menu at our leisure.
The place is clean, tidy, airy and flooded with light. Does not have AC but is so close to the ocean it doesn't need it.
I ordered the carne burrito coz I like it and it's a safe bet. I know, I'm boring. ButI still have the rest of the day to work and I didn't want to upset my stomach.
The tortilla it was wrapped in was sooo good. The meat needs more flavor. It was pretty good sized and I was full the rest of the day. I could have had a fruit for dinner and be fine this burrito was so filling.
The free chips was good and the free salsa was awesome. Not the best but pretty darned good.
Burrito, no drink, tax and tip was $9,
Our super prompt server was nowhere to be found when it was time to pay. This would be considered 5 STARS by most people I'm sure! LOL! -

El Tarasco USED to be our summer go to. Get a little hammered on the beach, soak up some rays, apply El Tarasco carne asada liberally and everything would be ok.
Sadly the place has slipped in recent years. Tacos come half (or less) full than they used to, getting a proper serving of chips and salsa requires borderline ambassador-like skill, and the prices haven't changed to reflect their new found thrifty portions.
All said, still easy to grab a patio seat (note: no beer served on the patio) and pound a few tacos if you don't mind ordering a double portion to satisfy your craving for carne. -

This is an awesome little spot, right by the beach. The food is good, and the price is right.
I usually order the 2 steak tacos special. The tacos come topped with delicious fresh guacamole... and it's served with rice, awesome beans, and comes with a drink. Super cheap. The chile rellenos and ceviche tostadas are very good too.
They serve beer, have patio tables... and it's a very nice ambiance.. ocean air and all. -

Terrible. We love "hole in the wall" mexican places where the food is cheap but authentic and delicious. All I can say for this place is that it is cheap. I was craving chille rellenos so we sought this local place out, and wish we hadn't. My fiance ordered beef enchiladas, and got cheese--they at least did not have the sour/somewhat rotten flavor of the pepper used in my entree. Service was less than average. The place was empty on a Friday evening, I guess we should have read into that more. The one positive is that beer here is always happy hour price, under $4/bottle. Next time, we make the hour trip over the hill to Salsa & Beer in North Hollywood--now THAT is great mexican food and always service with a smile.

Hadn't been here in awhile . . . but today was a day that was beach necessary. After a nice walk by the ducks, we sat on the patio and I ordered a delicious chicken tostada. The salad was fresh and prepared just right. The chips were a little disappointing, but still better than most places. The price was right. Ocean view lunch for $7.
Happy days. -

Los Angeles, CA
All right. Let's talk tacos.
I love tacos. Nothing makes me happier than tacos, especially when I am starving. But the little tragedies labeled "tacos" from El Tarasco literally almost made me cry.
I shouldn't have expected more, with the fine dining establishment being smack-dab in the middle of Venice beach tourist clusterfuckery and all. But I assumed (stupidly) it was a branch of the fantastic El Tarasco in Manhattan Beach, it looked a little grittier (which sometimes translates as more authentic/delicious) than the neighboring joints, and I was so hungry I was considering crying just so the tears rolling down my cheeks would carry salt into my mouth with minimal effort.
I am a lazy, lazy excuse for a human being. Which is also why I decided to eat here.
Three tacos for $7 or so--I don't know why everyone's raving about how dirt-cheap this place is. You can get platters of tacos so awesome you piss your pants for $7 in other parts of the town. Here, this amount of hard-earned unemployment money gets you three sad, lukewarm corn tortillas filled with what looks like frozen chicken thrown in the toaster oven, onions so tiny and bland I forgot they were there, some flavorless bits of limp cilantro, and a spoonful of salsa verde. The chicken depressed me the most out of the whole debacle because it reminded me of the kind of chicken my mother makes: dry, sort of chewy, bland, and oh so monochromatically pigmented. Where are the grill marks? The seasoning? The flavor? The joy? Not here, I can assure you.
I will admit, I ATE ALL THREE TACOS. All their tacos are belong to me. In my stomach. I was hungry and would have licked the orts out of someone's teeth just to get sustenance at that point. I'm kind of a garbage compactor (or a porn star): I will put pretty much anything in my mouth and swallow when the time is right. But I have never felt so ashamed for doing so until the day I ate the El Tarasco taco platter. Even Ron Jeremy didn't make me feel this cheap.
He's a pretty nice dude, actually. Great pianist.
The service was oddly negligent, considering the shop wasn't busy at all. We were ignored for most of the time we were there, hovering around the counter for a good 5 minutes before they decided to take our order. We could have easily dined and dashed, but we're (debatably) decent human beings and went to pay despite being less than underwhelmed by our meals. (Companion ordered a chicken burrito and had only this comment to offer: 'Mehh?") After being ignored for awhile at the counter, too, the guy finally asked, "What'd you get?" He spends a few minutes rifling through the haphazard stack of receipts speared next to the register, then disappears into the kitchen to try and find our orders. Really? There were like three people eating there. There's gotta be a more efficient way...
OK, at this point, I'm drunk NOW, so I'm ending the review. If you are starving and have been shanghaied into walking around Venice Beach with a friend from out of town, don't go to this place and order their chicken tacos. You will end up sad and drunk at home by yourself a day later like I am. I'm just too afraid to venture out and have another fucking tacopocalypse, so I stick to what I know: liquor. -

I'm a total Burrito and Taco Snob, so consider that in my rating.
I ordered a carne asada burrito here. The meat was not so good, the tortilla was pasty, and they totally skimped on the guacamole which I paid extra for. If you're looking for a good burrito in Venice at night, better to go to the Oaxaquena Food Truck on Lincoln just east of Rose (open until 3am)--It's pretty amazing. Or if craving a burrito during the day, go to La Isla Bonita food truck on Rose and 4th. -

Awful. This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant. I would go there on a regular basis. Last night I went, asked them for a vegan burrito, had a long conversation with the waitress about why I'm a vegan, made sure everything, including the sauce was animal free and when they brought it after a few bites it turned out that it had ground beef. So she apologizes and they make me a new one. To add insult to injury, as punishment it was less than half the size of the original and it had hardly any vegetables. It was obvious that the cook was trying to tell me something. I was charged full price and the cashier was giving me an attitude. I left with a bad taste in my mouth both figuratively and literally. My stomach still feels weird.
Too bad b/c this used to be my favorite place to eat in Venice beach. -

This is only an average Mexican joint that is no frills. It's not the greatest nor it's the worse in the LA area.
I was really hungry and this was the nearest place open to me. I ended up getting the classic carne asada burrito. I wasn't too impressed with the meat though, it tasted too rough and dry. Sometimes its hit and miss with this place so I'm not compelled to come here often. Funny is the one in Manhattan Beach tasted a bit more better although they should be the same everywhere.
Price isn't bad and they give you free chips and salsa. I have to say the salsa is pretty decent but the over all experience of the taste doesn't taste too authentic it taste more American than Mexican believe it or not. There are really good burrito place that are much tastier with better quality asada. This place just feels and taste too plane jane for my tastes. I suspect more American eat here than Mexican because of the demographics in this area. -

I have lived so close to El Tarasco for over 15 years and have yet to eat only twice here ! The food is so americanized , flavorless and bland!!Mayonaise in Guacamole ? Having lived in Mexico I love the street food you find there, tacos ringing with flavors of smoke, herbs and freshness .This place is only one step above the quality of Taco Bell ,Cmon El Tarasco ,show us real Mexicn cuisine !I know you can !!!

In a city where so many burritos live you have to be able to develop a discerning palate. I love love love the Jr. Super Deluxe Burrito, the red sauce is what makes it. It is so big I cannot finish it so I fail to understand how anyone can get the real deal -- you gotta be a big boy to finish that up!
The chips and salsa are great here as well (don't fill up!) and they do have good vegetarian options -- potato tacos?? I personally don't get it, seems like it's "bread on bread", but they are a favorite among friends of mine.
They also have beer and (I think) wine so you can enjoy a nice cold one with your Jr Super Deluxe monstrosity of goodness. (my new official name for the burrito) -

I like this little part of town, several places to eat and right by the beach with a pier.
Nice chips and salsa. I had the Tarasco tacos, two carne asada and one carnitas and I liked two of the three. The carne ones were tender and delicious but the carnitas was dried out. Good balance of tortilla and meat made for tasty tacos. Not the best within a 3 mile radius but maybe a third or fourth choice.Listed in: Tacos Locos

After experiencing several of the nearby eateries this has to be the one I would heartily recommend. The prices are fair but I noticed they didn't have the mammoth portions I am used to getting in mexican restaraunts. Pro tip, visit this place on monday night for the 5.95 dinner special(what a steal!). The food itself is amazing! It is easily one of the better mexican restaurants I have enjoyed. I tried the Carnitas and 3-Enchilada dinner plates. Both were fantastic. The chips and salsa were the best I have experienced in recent memory.
There are only two things holding this restaurant back from the coveted 5 stars. The first is the atmosphere. The restaurant is a bit dingy, cramped and has televisions going. The second is service was not up too par. It wasn't awful, I think they may just be understaffed.
Overall would recommend to a friend! I know I will be returning myself. -

I like how most El Tarasco's are a wonderful cross between fast food and sit-down. It is a sit-down place with waiter service (and you can get a beer), but they move you through super fast. And the prices are fast food prices. And hey! I'm not using the term "fast food" here with the thorns that are usually attached.
On my latest visit, I got the chile relleno burrito. I love chile relleno burritos. El Tarasco's is good, but the chile is a little on the firm side. Chips and salsa at this location are awesome (salsa is just "okay" at other El Tarascos).
By the way, what does "El Tarasco" mean? Am I the only one that asks these useless questions? Well, in case you care, according to http://dictionary.com, tarasco is "a member of an American Indian people of Michoacán state, in southwestern Mexico." And there you have it. I told you first. Give me a high five when we hang out next time. -

If you are looking for 5 star dining this is not the place. However, if you want some great Mexican food after a day at Venice beach, this is a perfect spot to fill up.
A short walk from the pier (on Washington), I've been eating here for 10+ years. Love the chips (they are huge) and the carnitas plates. Prices are good.
They serve beer but only inside. Expansion in 2007 added another room for indoor dining (only 3 tables outside). Great place to eat in the summer and watch tourists go by.
In my experience, staff has always had a good attitude and service has been great. Love this place. -

For about $7,500 for one quarter in UCLA grad school, I learned that Mexicans in the Westside aren't like the Mexicans anywhere else. They mostly come from the state of Oaxaca (land of the mole dish) and they are called Oaxaquenos. Those observant enough and not raised by Lucille Bluth will notice they look physically different because of their Aztec roots. This makes acculturation that much harder because many don't speak Spanish, but speak the native uhm, ok, this is where I forget things. Anyways, was it worth $7,500 for this kind of information? Everytime I go to a Westside restaurant, I brag to friends that I can tell Mexicans apart by STATE just by looking at the staff. That's a fucking skill worth a billion dollars! Which is what the UC will be charging next year for tuition.
A hop, skip, jump away from the orphaned section of Venice Beach on your way to the Venice Canals neighborhood, is El Tarasco. It was right outside my hotel at The Inn at Venice Beach. I gravitated towards the place because this area is jampacked by snooty eateries and El Tarasco couldn't look any more humbler. The enchilada plate I had was decent; I just didn't like that it wasn't muy sabroso. -

I work around the block, it is refreshing to find a place in the area that is cheap, relatively healthy, and tastes good.
Only thing I have had on the menu to actually disappoint is the Ranchero Sauce, but maybe it is just because I grew up on a version that has a butter base and now I really want that rich flavor every time. That being said, the potato enchiladas were still delicious.
It is still the only place at the beginning of Washington I can reliably go and get a good meal not slathered in grease for under $10 (If you have any suggestions for me to try, let me know!). -

"Chippy chippy damn yoose big!" was the first thing that came to my mind as I leaned back into my chair.
The true test, for me that is (beyond the initial chip test which El T passes), of a Mex restaurant has got to be the chorizo with egg meal or burrito. El Ts is pretty good and there beans are the way Iikes them dos. This really is a four star place not only for how the food tastes but the location is beach ready so the weather is chill when it's banging hot.
"So, Four-O, why three stars?"...well honestly the grease that I used to love so much on top of maybe a semi cooked runny egg hit me like a mother in like an hour and it stuck with me until now so I could only muster up the strength to hit the three star rating. But mark my words I WILL eat there again! AND order the chorizo - cause it was oh so good going down!
BOOM! Check please! -

Hipster little burrito joint that serves a decent wet burrito. It is a cheap, filling meal that would be even better if I was drunk at 3am. Unfortunately I went during daylight, so the cheap ingredients did bring it star rating down just a bit.

Wouldn't go back.
Pros:
Salsa had a good spice to it
VERY cheap - ~$6/plate
Cons:
Low-grade food: The chicken was very low quality. The cheese seemed to be Velveeta.
Poor service: The waitress forgot things we asked for multiple times and never came back to check if there was anything else we needed.
I could see eating here if I really couldn't afford a good restaurant, but if you're that tight on money you should really cook at home instead of eating so poorly. -

Lame. I'm sure they do a couple things well, based on the other reviews here, but they struck out with the cheese-enchilada / beef taco combination.
The cheese enchiladas were the worst I've ever had: hardly any cheese, and what is there was pre-shredded flavorless dairy product. Tasteless tortillas (which could have been flour for all I know) wrapped way too many times around very little cheese.
How hard is it to make good cheese enchiladas? For the same $7.50 you could buy the ingredients they used in an aisle of any Ralphs and do better.
The beef taco had some tender chopped beef but not much flavor.
The price is cheap and I don't mind the simple digs, but the plate was made and served with no love. -

One word - avoid.
Or maybe not. If you're into slow, rude, inconsiderate service that can't seem to get the orders right, then maybe this is a good place.
If you're into bland, tasteless overdone mexican food with "chicken" that tasted more like they grilled a street pigeon, then maybe this is a good place.
If you're into chewy, leather-like chips with watery salsa, then maybe this is a good place.
If you're into shrimp tacos with no shrimp, then maybe this is a good place.
If you want beans that you could use in a pellet gun, with quartz rice, then maybe this is a good place.
Note, this is not a good place. This is an avoid place. You would get better mexican food at Taco Bell, and that's scary. Heck, McDonald's does better mexican food -

Hipsters! Why can't you buy a decent hand-wrapped burrito in this town? Some vato discovered he could squeeze another 2 bucks off you suckers by drowning his meat tube in canned red sauce. For shaaaame! Burritos are meant to be portable, that is their destiny. Hatred, red sauce, these are the paths to the dark side. If I wanted to sit down to my meal I would've ordered the lobster thermidor a-crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam. Yay, a burrito must have wheels, which brings us to the review of this fine burrito purveyor.
(I always heard pork was toxic meat, but it can't be any filthier than my ball sack, which is no stranger to my lips. The fact that pork tastes so good and pigs are smarter than dogs begs the proposition that meat tastes better higher up on the intellectual food chain. Do humans taste like pork slathered with lard, crack and bernaise? (No wanton chewing for Pompus though, as animal control waits in devilish ambush behind each new Pinkberry).
Now HERE be oily, gob-smacking carnitas of a velvety carnal texture, oozing from its papery casing and running down your trembling paws with sensual familiarity. Get one for your breeder and head down to the beach where you can sniff strange ass near the sparkling tide.
AND they make a fine breakfast. Won't break the doggy wallet either. S'truth! -

Not bad but not great. Very cheap. Like $6.95 a plate! I had the beef enchiladas and they were just OK. Almost texmex more than Mexican. Which, being from Austin is fine.
We chose this place over the others because it wasn't as crowded. I guess that was for a reason. The locals dig it but like in Silver Lake I dig Tacos Delta and they'd think I'm crazy. -

I recall eating here in 2007 when i landed in LA. El Tarasco was the only place open, but the food was fantastic.

Being a local, it's easy to forget how dependable and good this place is. Though it's yards away from the fancier Baja Cantina up the street, it's worth visiting after a day at the beach.
The dishes are simple and good, the tortilla chips are fresh and the house salsa's pretty good as well. The price range is more than reasonable and if you go at the right time you might even meet Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols if you're lucky...or unlucky. -

I give this place one star because of their Salsa, rice and Mural inside the dining area.
The service was awful. The waitress had a bad attitude and forgot several of the things that were ordered, and never came back to refill drinks or to see if there was anything else needed.
The carne asada I ordered was mediocre. I definately wont be coming back.

The people who run this location are super nice and have excellent customer service. Meals are decent prices and you get a ton for your money. My only gripe is they need hotter salsa. Ta-patio and the house salsa for chips is good, but I want to burn. Couple of beers and two plates of monstrosity was under 25 USD. Good deal and great location.
