Review from Maria Jo N.
Denver, CO
I've been to the El Rey Inn twice. Once with my mom and brothers 8 years ago when I was in high school and again a month ago when I took a solo trip to Santa Fe for the week.
This place is magic!
I felt so welcomed. I didn't have a reservation and when I went to check in the woman at the reception desk (who was the same woman that was there 8 years ago) checked on the availability of the inexpensive room I requested. When she didn't get and immediate response from house cleaning, she upgraded me for the same price even though house cleaning had gotten back to her about 12 seconds later. The room was great. Comfortable, spacious, and cozy (not cramped). I stayed in room 5 which had an awesomely huge bathroom, comfortable bed, couch desk, and a separate full kitchen.
Continental breakfasts in the morning were great too. Hot and cold items to chose from and all the juice, coffee, and tea you could want, which went nicely with the coffee and teas that were already supplied in my room
Complimentary wifi in the rooms, cute pool/hottub area, and the kind of decor you'd want to see in Santa Fe.
This place was recommened to my mom years ago by a friend, and I've already spread the secret since I've been back. If you're going to Santa Fe, STAY HERE! When you consider how great the staff and ammenities are, you feel like you're stealing to get these rooms at these prices. -

AWESOME!!!!!!! Inexpensive, especially in the off season. May not be your luxury hotel, but for what you pay, it gives a whole lot more than any chain hotel every could. Decor was just plain fun, real adobe walls, skylights in the room, log beams, couldn't hear anything in the rooms next door, bathroom was HUGE and then there was an entire giant sink area on top of that. Also, in general, the room itself was huge and it was just your standard double room.
Definitely will be back if I'm ever in Santa Fe. Continental breakfast was a tad bit disappointing. Plus was the warm tortilla served at the table, but the rest of the options were meh. Dining area was the nicest I've ever seen in a hotel though, complete with if I remember right, a fire place. Outside theme decoration made it fun and I thought the cute little playground added a nice touch. Also, there are a bunch of rooms in the complex too. Staff were nice and helpful when needed too. -

The El Rey Inn is a beautiful hotel on the main drag that is Cerrillos Road. Cerrillos is hardly a beautiful thoroughfare, but the El Rey is a beautiful refuge. It has murals depicting New Mexico's diverse history, lovely gardens, and a pleasant swimming pool.
The El Rey isn't one of the fancier places to stay. Still, it is enchanting in the Land of Enchantment! -

El Rey is a vintage inn, well maintained, with the exception of their textiles. Polyester bedspreads, cheap foam pillows, paper thin towels all remind me of the worst era of cheap motels. Even Holiday Inn has upgraded above this level in this day and age. The breakfast room is cramped and full of cloying seniors getting that free piece of toast or factory farmed piece of fruit.
I wanted so badly to cope with these limitations but the deal breaker was no internet in the rooms. It's clear they have it set up over their 4.5 acre property but in my room I hung on for dear life with the 3g network on my iphone. So the concept of getting work done in my room was greatly diminished to nonexistent.
El Rey, you're historical and well maintained but you have missed the boat on what modern travelers crave most - the interface between traveler and outer world - the sheets and pillows - and an effective and reliable web connection.
Nice but - my first and last visit here. -

I can't believe there aren't a million reviews - this place is the BEST! We've stayed here 3 times over the years and it just keeps getting better and better.
First of all, the people are great - very friendly and helpful.
The property is very well maintained - very nice pool, plants throughout the property, bird baths, etc.
Most importantly, the rooms are PERFECT. Super clean (which we love), comfortable, attractive rooms (tiles, decorations, beam ceiling, etc.)
Definitely the best place to stay in Santa Fe! -

Quite frankly, I'm surprised that I am the first one to review this gem of a motel. It's on Cerrillos road and you will pretty much need to drive to get anywhere. However...
The price is reasonable for Santa Fe and inside you'll find well tended and landscaped grounds, well-appointed and comfortable Southwestern rooms, and plenty of places inside and out to relax. That includes outdoor sitting areas and a nice livingroom area. Decent free continental breakfast too. Staff was also very knowledgable regarding things to do and see within Santa Fe and beyond.Listed in: Gayle, Unique Places to Stay, Northern New Mexico

I'm kind of a hotel snob. I travel a lot and am kind of finnicky about the places that I say.
However, El Rey impressed me. It definitely doesn't try to be a high class fancy pants hotel. It instead focuses on delivering an experience of Southwestern charm. Each of the rooms is designed differently (at least the original rooms are - they've since expanded over the years). The layout of the grounds is huge - we had to hunt around a bit to find the outdoor spa/sauna. The rooms were clean, the staff was friendly, and it's conveniently located on Cerrillos Rd. My mother loves staying here each time that she comes to Santa Fe, and I would definitely stay here again. -

We found this place by accident and we're really glad we stayed. El Rey has a wonderful southwestern charm and strives to maintain its old Route 66 mystique. Everything is very clean and well maintained and the staff is very helpful and friendly. What's more, the free breakfasts are excellent. We were lucky to stay in the newer part near the pool and hot tub. Only one complaint: If you're in the first floor, the noise from people walking around on the second floor can be a little annoying.

We stayed at the El Rey Inn after reading the review in the New York Times. It was really just okay. The ceilings were super low and the traffic noise was almost unbearable. The unit we were staying in was probably not refreshed since the advent of the interstates. It needed a lot of TLC.
The grounds are very pretty with nice gardens and a nice pool. The staff was very friendly. The location was very convenient to everything - two miles to the historic district and one mile to head out to Taos. But after experiencing it, I would recommend to stay in a newer or nicer hotel. -
