Review from Louise G.
This restaurant still remains a gem in the Vancouver world of Salvadoreno and Mexicano cuisine.
A return visit today finds the place under new ownership in the past year.
What remains is a great menu, delightful and friendly service, yummy fresh food, and now also a selection of groceries. YAY!
Delicious enchiladas ( http://www.yelp.ca/biz... ) and tacos shared with my coworker, who also enjoyed the food and flavours.Listed in: 30-Day Challenge, becomes 365…, Healthier Choices

Review from Buster B.

Visited this restaurant based on other reviews and a love of latin american cuisine. The decor is sparse, but clean. We thought the food was very good and fresh. The owner/server was welcoming and informative about menu items. There are a lot of items on the menu we can't wait to go back and try, like the Salvadorean stew. Go hungry because you will be well fed!

They have very interesting soda's. The prices are very reasonable. Every day there is a special except Sunday. There's also a neat little grocery section of this restaurant. I would come back.

I'm not sure it's really Mexcan . . .but I loved it.
The sign on the front says Mexican. The wonderful people inside are El Salvadorian. The food was terrific. Prices are more than reasonable. Better than average in my books! -

I can't help but to give this place a 5 Star. All this talk of authentic ethnic food, etc, etc. Well come down to El Pulgarcito for great Mexican and El Salvadorian food. There's a small little store in the back that you can buy all sorts of beans, hot sauces, chilis, etc.
I am so lucky my friend, Barb, is such a foodie and seems to know where to go for everything.
Plus, I have much respect for the owner. Immigrant to Canada that is working hard the honest way to enjoy the safety and freedom that Canada can provide. -

Oh my god this place is good. I live just a few blocks away, and yet it makes me feel like I'm at home (even though home is 3,000 miles away). Where I'm from, Mexican food is abundant, cheap, and in high competition. So needless to say, I've had it all - from sh*t I wouldn't feed my dog to the best. Trust me when I say El Pulgarcito is the best Mexican/Salvadorean food you'll find in Vancouver.

*4 Check-ins here* ... latest visit November 2010
Sadly I must dock a star today :[ my tacos were cold and I didn't get my refried's. I think the owner is away. Not giving up on the place just yet though.

mmmMexican/ Salvadorian food= GET IN MY BELLY!
We ordered Beef Enchilada with Mole sauce. For those that don't know what that is, take note:
There are many variations but mostly it's Chocolate Chili sauce that's thick and dark but not too spicy.
The Chicken Tamale was so filling that I saved some for breakfast today. (and a very yummy breakfast that was, too.)
The Taco's are soft corn tortilla's with your choice of meat inside. Beef or Chicken.
We also ordered the Pupusa. A homemade flat bread with a filling inside, usually cheese, beef, beans or choice, like vegg.
Have you had a Mexican/Salvadorean Brunch?
Half the menu is dedicated to breakfasts.
-and all are under 10 bucks!
This is such a cute little Taqueria where the owner is always friendly and forthcoming.
With easy parking I invite you all to give it a try.
Mexican and Salvadorean food like you would actually find South of the border.
*previous review describes other meals, -like the burrito.

I had dinner at El Pulgarcito last weekend and I have to say that the best proof that food served in an ethnic restaurant is truly ethnic is when the other people there are from the Country the food is from. Check! El Plugarcito was filled with Salvadorians.
The service was nice; I'm assuming the man that served us is the owner that everyone else talks about. He wasn't overly friendly but I get the feeling he is shy.
We had fajitas, enchiladas and papusas, which I haven't had in years. The papusas were to die for! And the food was super cheap.
I have two complaints about this place. One, I don't think they are licensed and it's hard for me to eat Latin food without beer. Two, my boyfriend's order of fajitas came out about ten minutes before my food did. The timing was terribly off and we both ate at different times for that reason.
I will go back to El Pulgarcito - the food is the right price and it does taste like home cooking. -
Review from arinn w.
this place is a little gem! it's casual, inexpensive and the food is quite nice. first off, i was tickled by the choice between mexican & salvadoran horchata. the difference is that the salvadoran is slightly spicier, while mexican (what i'm used to) is sweeter. the pupusas are sooooo good. i got some huevos breakfast delight & the amount and quality of food was perfect, BUT (there's always a but) the beans were a little cold. that's ok, cause i love 'em anyway. the service was super friendly and i would recommend this place to anyone in search of mexican in this 'hood, over el barrio a couple blocks away. (no offense el barrio! but when i go for mexican, i prefer it less fusiony & expensive)

This place is awesome, and mere blocks from my flat. How could I not love it?
The service is fast and friendly. The food is great. Their horchata is divine. And they sell various hot sauces, flours for tortilla (etc.), and delicious Latin American sodas. (and indeed, a tonne of other stuff)
Everything I've had here is fantastic, and the owner is so friendly.
Note: their portions are massive. I can only eat a quarter of their regular sized burrito on a good day. As other people have mentioned, its a bit inconsistent, but not in deliciousness.
Probably my favourite Latin American spot in Vancouver. Its more like home cooking than restaurant food. -
Review from Jordan H.
Good little mexican joint. The owner (only guy that's ever there) is great, prices are cheap, and portions are generous. Would be a four-star but the food can be inconsistent. Sometimes the breakfast comes with avocado, sometimes not. Sometimes things come with lots of cheese, sometimes barely any... that type of thing.
Also one time he had his wife serving (just once, and we've been here a lot, I think he learned his lesson), and she spoke absolutely zero english, making even the most simple of orders impossible (we couldn't even get our eggs scrambled). -
Review from Bella G.
I love this place. The tortilla soup is yummy. The tomales are tasty. In general, I feel most comfortable in places with bright colours so this place fits the bill. The staff is kind and quite helpful with my lactose intolerant requirements. Very inexpensive. Good Stuff.

El Pulgarcito is one of the most authentic Salvadorian/Latino restaurants in Vancouver. For that matter, one of the best I've been to north of Los Angeles. The pupusas here come to one's table steeming hot with salsa and a beautiful pickled cabbage. The tamales are just a fullfilling and genuine. Try the horchata - a sweet milky rice concoction. Take a walk to the east side of Vancouver and find yourself in San Salvador. Caliente!
