Dinner before the soccer match, where to go?  There are not a lot of options around Empire Stadium so The Wife and I just started walking and happened to see the sign for El Mariachi.  We climbed the flight of stairs and found a lovely dinner space.  We were warmly greeted and the great service continued during the meal.

They have changed management so the menu is in transition but I hope they keep the Tacos Cochinita Pibel.  My plate came with three small tacos with a lovely citrus noted pull pork with a few shreds of pickled onion.  Included on my plate was a mound of tasty rice, some refried black beans and some pico de gallo.  The Wife had great looking plate of two tostados with beans, lettuce, tomatoes and caramelized onions.

If we are ever in the area again I know where I'll be heading for dinner!

Visiting Vancouver, we had been craving mexican for a few days and were not having much luck finding a place we fancied trying. I came across this place and after reading online reviews we gave it a try.

It was very quiet when we arrived, which originally made me a bit skeptical (only one other table of four, who left shortly after we arrived) but then it was a thursday night, not too long before they were due to close. We had nothing to worry about!! The restaurant is located upstairs, and has lovely colourful decor and music which really added to the ambiance.

I started with a mango daiquiri and my husband with special beer and tobasco drink called a Michelada. Wow did that have a kick, even though the server toned it down a bit seeing as he had never had one before, but both were really yummy. We were served homemade chips with a dip to start and then we shared the chile relleno, chicken flautas, tacos de cochinito pibil. The dishes were all served with a side of rice, beans and pico de gallo. Everything was really delicious, included the pico de gallo, which I normally don't like as I do not like cilantro, but the flavour balance in it was perfect!

Everything tasted very authentic, fresh and homemade. A key factor for us at any restaurant! Service was great also, friendly and attentive. The place to visit when you are craving mexican!

    A for effort.

    D for food.

The atmosphere is terrific. The location a little hidden.

The mariachi band that plays is pretty fun to listen to. I was there with a large party (roughly 25) and we took up about 2/3 the seating in the place. The service was OK considering we were a big group, although it was just one server serving us so she did an admirable job.

The food, though. It gave me numerous WTF moments. The breakfast, lunch, dinner menu is all in one. If I were looking at just the dinner side there was nothing outwardly Mexican about it. I mean, ribs with some sort of Mexican sauce on it? All entrees come with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed veggies? Head scratching to be sure.

Got a appy of nachos which was OK. HUGE portion, but too many black beans!

The lunch menu (which wasn't all available for dinner) was more understandable. Typical fare - and I got the Chile Relleno - which was OK. My companion got a meal with a little steak - which wasn't seasoned at all and had stuff on it, but the point is it tasted like unseasoned beef. Not so nice.

Prices aren't bad - for two with an appy and two entrees (no alcho) and a drink it was about $45. But man, does Vancouver ever LACK great Mexican.

If you go, there is parking in the back - alley access.

I wavered between two and three stars for quite some time before finally deciding to go ahead and give El Mariachi three - in hopes it will live up to that third star.

I was quite excited to give this place a try after driving by the sign along Hastings for months.  The restaurant is actually on the second level above a coffee shop and the view is quite nice. The atmosphere was the best part about the experience with the brightly colored walls and interesting art providing an exceptional backdrop to what turned out to be a mediocre meal.

We ordered a queso fundido to start and the generous portion of cheese was served in a cast iron skillet with toast - something that was a new twist for this dish, but I went with it. The cheese was tasty, but the chorizo tasted more like plain Italian sausage rather than the wine cured pork variety I expected. My husband ordered the Mexican Platter which had steak, an enchilada, and a quesadilla. All were OK, but nothing spectacular. I had the Chicken Flautas. They were nice and crispy, but the chicken filling was bland. The beans were tasty, which is a true test in my book, but the rice tasted stale and had obviously not been made fresh that day.

Drinks were served quickly, but my margarita was overly sweet for my taste. All in all, a rather run of the meal experience.

The breakfast menu did look quite good, so perhaps I'll try El Mariachi again for brunch. In the mean time, I'll stick with my old standbys for Mexican food in Vancouver.

My husband and I moved to Burnaby from Texas a couple years ago and I have been waiting for something like this! It's the first Mexican restaurant that compares to home.

The nachos are LOADED. Not the kind where you're left with lots of naked chips underneath the good stuff. The beef burrito is fantastic and the chicken tacos are excellente! Not to mention the margaritas are refreshing and not too sweet or too 'fake green stuff'.

We see ourselves going back to El Mariachi regularly.

This place is great. Best nachos I've tasted in a while. The side of guacamole was huge!
