    El Cosmico is sublime.
My friend and I camped on their grounds during an amazing southwest road trip. We arrived after a treacherous eight hour journey along a Mexico/US boarder road and were so relieved to find this place to be everything we had hoped. We ended up having so much fun the first day we were there we decided to re-work our tight travel schedule in order to accommodate a second night in Marfa.
The grounds are so cool, somewhere between commune and campground, tents, yurts, and trailers scatter the grounds, there are people lounging in the hammocks, writing at the picnic tables and little groups coming and going. I can't even say enough about how amazing this place is. It's really one of those things that's gotta go on the "bucket list" - not just El Cos but Marfa in general, staying at El Cos just kind of completes the experience.
If you do decide to stay here - keep in mind that it's no luxury experience. While we didn't stay in one of their accommodations and brought our own tent instead, it didn't seem like the yurts and trailers and what-have-you were much more glamorous, maybe just a little dryer. The bathrooms are free-standing huts with privacy but...not really. Sinks are outside, as well as extra showers. You probably won't stay very clean as it's all dirt grounds but that's really just part of the experience.
Come here with an open mind - seriously. I can't stress that enough. It is such an incredible, sublime experience to be here (especially for me and my friend who were coming from big cities in the Northeast but still..). There's so much sky and the whole town is so unique (bike ride to to dinner at Miniature Rooster!!!) and beautiful and El Cosmico fits so perfectly on the outskirts of town - it's really an experience...and yeah, the bikes cost money to rent and things aren't really crazy cheap but if you spent five minutes talking to the (really nice!!) staff you'd realize that the town all together is in the middle of nowhere (See: Marfa Meltdown) and can use all the money they can get.
so go out and see the world

El Cosmico is not sublime.  It is a dry piece of nearly treeless land with barely a piece of desert flora, a few very old trailers placed around, and some teepees and yurts erected.  When we first drove by the property on our way to Chinati and saw the trailers (knowing we had booked a night here) we had a moment of complete uh-oh.  Mind you, we knew the Lambert's reputation in Austin and had great respect for the hotels and restaurants and cafes there.  And, we had booked the place because it was recommended (and highly touted here!), and because we LOVE old motor homes.  We had expectations. Perhaps if the night had been more mild.  Perhaps if it didn't cost more than we've spent for any night in any town for weeks.  Perhaps if it had a place to bathe protected by the 40mph winds and 30 degree weather (which I understand isn't all that uncommon). But none of that was the case, and because of it, we were really disappointed and wanted to stay someplace else with a hot, indoor shower. We were told we couldn't get all of our money back (we were offered half, and full if someone came and stayed there that night).  Fortunately, a guy who overheard our plight offered us his trailer, one of only two that has an indoor shower.  What a generous guy Keith is.  Not sure who he is or where he's from, but he made two ladies really happy that night by not having a hot shower.  That doesn't happen every day. Thanks again, Keith!!

I have to say, the people in the beautiful building who take your money and give you keys were lovely, and did what they could.  I don't begrudge them.  It's more that I'm surprised the Lamberts and architects put their names on this place.  It could be so much more by still being "less", or minimalistic.

There weren't any dishtowels or a place for trash in the trailer.  The kitchen supplies were very minimal, not really enough to make anything. Though the aesthetic of the trailers are amazing, I think it's more because originally the aesthetic of these trailers were amazing. I would stay here if it was half the price, I think, but probably I would stay somewhere else next time.

We did see the light in Marfa.  It's an amazing little town, ghostly, decrepit, simple, beautiful and stark, with people who are genuine and true at heart.  El Cosmico is trying to be that, I think, but missed the train.  By the way, the train along 90 is so amazing to drive with, if you can time it.

Staying at El Cosmico was a fun adventure--a hybrid between cool hostel and trailer park. We actually went on a round trip through Texas and stayed at four of Liz's concept hotels.

Since we were mostly staying at hotels, we certainly weren't prepared for the outdoors aspect that this boutique camp ground. We landed at El Cosmico on Thanksgiving Day. We planned for a sleepy evening in Marfa and brought our own semi-traditional holiday meal.

I expected more supplies in the kitchen--but it is actually quite bare. Thankfully I McGuyvered my way through heating up tamales on the hot plate and opening a bottle of wine. There is currently a burn ban so don't count on grilling up any venison.

I wish we had the following supplies during our stay:
    +Corkscrew
    +Pots & Pan
    +Wooden Spoon
    +Plates
    +Wine Glasses
    +Candles
    +Flashlight
    +Thick Towels

I do think they ought to put a rug in the yurts and safari tents. It would really bring the place together.

My friend and I stayed in a yurt in mid-November (frigid!) and loved it. You should realize that the yurts and temples are essentially outside: the heated blanket and two or three additional wool blankets kept me warm but he complained a tad (though he complains about quite a bit...); the nighttime walk to the bathroom is cold as hell. Though you'll hear others as they camp and their dogs may wake you up in the morning it's still quieter than many motels I've stayed in. The bathrooms are unique, offer some privacy, and have a steady hot water supply. The group kitchen works better on paper: the hot plates don't work very well.

You can walk to downtown restaurants and bars and the Chinati Foundation in under ten minutes.

I would rather not imagine staying here in the summer.

Junk!  Junk! Junk!  I would not stay there.  To charge those prices and YOU HAVE TO WALK TO THE BATHROOM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.  The check-in staff should wear bandit masks. It looks like the whole place should be scraped and sold for scrap.  The only thing that could add to the ambiance is an old car up on blocks and a pit bull dog on a rope.

El Cosmico is a dream! Thank you, Yelp, for this choice find.

The kitschy, Austin vibe was delightful, not as tacky as it is in Austin, oftentimes. There are several 50's trailers for nightly rental, dim path lights to help find your way around, and a hip-looking front house  with free WiFi (they sell ice and other practical stuff, too).

I couldn't believe this place got such a high rating here on Yelp, but the 4-5 stars are worth it. I was able to make a tent camping reservation over the phone with a very friendly woman. What really put this place over the top for me was the rubber-wheeled handcarts available for no extra charge to bring your gear from car to camping site--big score. The hot water in the showers next morning helped, too.

You can easily keep to yourself here, if that's your thing. As a mingler, however, I chatted with a few of the other campers around the site, all of which were friendly, thankfully, because I wouldn't have had dinner if someone hadn't lent me a can opener.

El Cosmico is recommended, especially for those who are new to camping, aren't Bear Grylls, or just want a delightful night under the stars.

Luv luv luv. I want to live here please.

My friend and I stayed in the big Airstream, which is nicely decorated and was just a wonderful place to be, both inside and on the deck.

We were there on a Wednesday night in September, so the place was pretty quiet, only a few other guests as far as I could tell. Staff was friendly and helpful, and even just hanging out in the lobby is lovely. I really wish I'd had more time there. I don't know when I'll be in Texas again, but when I am.... I'm comin' back.

My wife and I headed to Marfa recently to watch a movie and meet up with some friends. We have a small vintage trailer that we like to camp in and this trip seemed like a perfect opportunity to use it. Upon arrival in Marfa we checked El Cosmico's availability and were pleasantly surprised that they could accommodate. Do note that our trailer is only 13 feet long and requires a standard electrical outlet. 40 foot land yachts requiring water hookups and waste are better off at the Apache Pines park up the road.

I'll admit we were a tad hesitant that El Cosmico may be hipster overkill. Coming from Austin I'm well aware of the ironic d-factor that can quickly overcome unique properties like this. Fortunately though, everyone that we met were laid back and friendly. The women at the front desk were very helpful and gave us the run down of the property, area and facilities.

The facilities at El Cosmico are awesome. From the outdoor kitchen equipped with hotplates and fridge, to the outdoor solar showers that were especially refreshing in 105 degree heat, everything had the right balance of rustic style and function. The nights, along with being some of the most star filled I've ever seen, were cool and quiet.

We absolutely loved El Cosmico and look forward to staying here again.

This place is amazing! I highly recommend it! We stayed in the 1956 Imperial Mansion and we loved it! It was a little hot in there - not only was it June - but when we got to the trailer, the kettle was left on to "dry" - as it is made of cast iron. It took FORVER to cool the space down, but at that point, we didn't even care, it was so freaking cool!

If you are a visual person, or even if you like unusual places to stay, I highly recommend this place. There are a few other trailers on the campground, as well as teepees and yurts, which are all a striking sight in the sparse desert!

There is a very chilled, hippie vibe here - in some ways, it is a little bit like Austin, but more laid back ! We ADORED it! As in most deserts, it cools down nicely at night, so sleeping wasn't a problem!

This campground is super awesome whether you are tent camping, renting out one of their RVs or staying in a yurt. I love all of it. They have an outdoor kitchen with a hot plate and a fridge, their bathrooms are clean and they have a little hammock grove. Pretty luxurious if you are used to primitive camping. They also have teepees you can stay in. I can't wait to come back.

Stayed in a yurt (in October, if you're thinking about weather) and couldn't have been happier. Yes, it was freezing at night but yes, there were stacks of awesome heavy wool blankets - and a heated bed. Towels provided and pretty (!) bathroom facilities steps away. The indian tin lantern (yes, there's electricity) used to light my yurt made it look gorgeous from the outside at night - like a pale golden christmas ornament perched in the desert. The staffer who checked me in was very nice, gave me a full tour, and helped me find a good place for a late night bite (Padre's -- good veg bar food, full bar and an unexpected - but good - singer-songwriter performance. I guess P's is the local music venue, and I totally enjoyed sitting under the dim chandeliers and chatting up traveling oil company dudes.). Great lobby/office/hangout building with good wifi when I needed to get some work done, and the hammock grove was total icing on the cake.

And let's not forget that it's by FAR the cheapest option in Marfa. $60/night for the yurts, compared to $150 minimum at El Paisano, close to that at Thunderbird, and $90ish at Stay Marfa (which did look super cute if sleeping close to the earth ain't your bag). The trailers at El Cosmico are up there with the pricey options, but you could put a whole family in one of those things.

I was not sure what to expect when we decided to stay at Cosmico.  I must say I was very pleasantly surprised at how peaceful and safe it was here.

We chose to camp in our own tent that we brought.  Reasonable rate at 20$ a night.  They have warm showers and sinks for you to use.

I would definitely stay here again if ever in the area.  Very cool place and very relaxing!

Unfortunatley, my husband and i were not welcomed into this place after a super long drive from austin. We asked the receptionist , who looked bored out of her mind, for a room and she reluctantly offered us a tent, not wanting to tell us the price, and then went on to say its pretty cold tonight, to keep us away! were totally turned off! bad vibes! we will not be going back!

We only got to stay here one night (a Friday night) as we were spending Saturday night in Ft. Davis, but I would definitely have enjoyed at least another night or two.

We stayed in the safari tent as all their yurts were full for that night. A queen size futon on a hard floor, extra blankets, towels and electricity were all provided (I loved the Moroccan themed metal light fixture hanging over our futon). The bathroom is a community activity, haha. Toilets, and showers especially, are not completely enclosed. I had a little reservation showering in the morning knowing that if someone really wanted to, they could come stand at the door and look through the gaps and see me in all my glory, haha. But I didn't catch any creepers and overall found it somewhat refreshing. I'd do it again.

I was disappointed that the Dutch tubs weren't in use (an open flame coupled with EXTREMELY dry conditions made it out of the question) but hope to come back once they've had some good rain and try one out. I also wished I had had the time to take advantage of the hammock grove.

Overall, I had a really good experience but didn't get to take advantage of everything the El Cosmico had to offer. I will definitely be coming back in the future!

Great campgrounds and trailers, rude and unhelpful staff. Overall, disappointed because it has loads of potential.

So here's the deal... We stayed in the Imperial Mansion trailer. Huge, clean trailer with an oven, a bathroom, two beds, a deck.. Great place to stay that didn't feel like a dime-a-dozen hotel room. Sweaty hot during the day but was perfect at night. The deck was breezy and comfortable though even in the middle of July.

My crappy experience with this place started when I got into town late on my first day because of a family emergency.... They helpfully left our keys in the trailer for us so we didn't have to worry about checking in after hours. They also left me a list of rules and regulations that rate as common sense in every other hotel I've ever stayed at: Don't smoke in the trailer or there will be a fee. Don't damage the trailer or there will be a fee. Don't steal anything from the trailer or there will be a fee. Don't check out early or we'll give you chocolate cake. Oh I'm sorry, that last part was supposed to read "there will be a fee."

They told me to sign and deliver this list of instructions (with no 'thanks for staying with us!" on the form) to the office as early as possible the next morning. Sure I just drove 8 hours after a family crisis and got in at 1 am. I'll wake up at the crack of dawn and deliver these ten commandments of common sense to the front desk.

So I get there and the aloof young lady at the front desk accepted the signed form and charged the bill for the rest of my stay to my card with an additional forty dollars on top of the price of two nights stay. "Wait, what's the extra forty dollars for?" I asked. "That's hotel tax." she stated with a sigh before returning to her laptop, presumably to add more to "The Gospel According to El Cosmico: Fluff Thine Own Damn Pillow". At that point it dawned on me: They do NOT operate a campground that offers a unique way to experience Marfa away from the trappings and creature comforts of a hotel; They consider themselves a hotel that is without the standard things expected at every other hotel I've ever stayed at. They do not provide soap and shampoo in their trailers. They do not offer clean towels every day as part of the standard package. For that, you have to bother the lady at the front desk sitting behind the laptop and by the time she's provided you with fresh linens her Facebook login has timed out. Gaaawwwsh!

Look, I'm more than happy to pay extra for hotel tax. I'd like soap and shampoo and towels with that though plz. Thnx.

Later that day we asked if she knows of a local auto mechanic because our car was having radiator trouble. "The only one I know of closed at noon. You'll have to check and see if Alpine has one open." Not "Hey, sorry to hear you're having car trouble. Let me get you a phone book or look up a few places for you to call that could help."

A few hours after that we walked in asking if we could rent a few bikes. A different girl who apparently underwent a personality transplant with the previous lady said "Sure. You'll have to have them back in an hour and a half by dark though because they don't have lights on them. That'll be 20 dollars." Errrm. Whatever just put the bikes on my room. One of the bikes was broken and she didn't provide an Allen wrench with which to adjust the seat height. The lady at the Thunderbird adjusted our seats for us. Just sayin'.

An hour later we come back to the front desk (by now my teeth clenched at the thought of entering the place as so far my only interaction with the staff had been to the effect of 'here's a hidden fee we didn't discuss',  'can't help ya buddy', and 'here's our half day rental fee for the bike for an hour and a half' by Servbot 5000) to purchase a bag of ice. She handed me the bag and as I said "thank you" and walked out she looked at me like I was crazy. I stopped before I reached the door and asked "You can charge this to my room like you did the bicycles, right?" "No" she said "You have to pay for those here." Clearly at this point I as entered a dimension where all courtesy and sense of logic flew out the window.

Guys, I love the place but the level of hospitality has to be stepped up to match the premium you're charging people to stay here. Oh, and it'd be nice if you added verbage to the contract we're required to sign before our stay that "There are hammocks and a common area over yonder. You can rent the bikes (we had to ask) and here's a list of places to eat and get supplies locally." Cell phone service is spotty at best here, ya know.

    Overall; not recommended.

I love this place.  We stayed in the imperial mansion trailer  and it was lovely.  In October, the weather was perfect.  We needed blankets one night and it was sweet!  Even though we had a lovely bathroom with shower in the trailer, I really wanted to go try the outdoor shower!  The common bathroom facilities are so cute.  If the trailer bathroom is full, you can always run out to the common bathroom or the one in the lobby.  The phone reception and internet access is spotty around Marfa but you can get a wireless connection in the groovy lobby.  Don't forget your flashlight.  The lighting is low - which I like - but if you need to walk around the grounds in the dark, the flashlight would be helpful.

Just the relaxing retreat I was looking for. We arrived late on Friday night to find a peaceful camping area and many friendly people. We pitched a tent, but I've heard the trailers are pretty cool too.

It's located close to everything - less than a 10 minute walk downtown - and is the most peaceful place I can imagine with hammocks, outdoor showers and a cool outdoor kitchen that's open to everyone.

Next time I'm in Marfa, I'll be headed back to El Cosmico.

PS word of caution...if you arrive when it's dark, be sure to have a flashlight with you to find your camping site.

The one night I stayed at El Cosmico is the number one highlight of my last cross-country trip this summer.

I read about this place several times in the last couple years, and was reminded about it when visiting friends in Austin.  I got the Cozy Coach, and loved it.  I've always wanted an Airstream, and now it's a MUST for me.  I'd love to stay here a week just to disconnect.  It's worth the travel to get there.

We had a very wonderful, relaxing stay in Marfa last week, largely due to the awesomeness of El Cosmico.

We stayed one night in the teepee, two nights in the "Imperial Mansion" and one more in the "Vagabond". Some of my favorite things about El Cosmico include the shady hammock cluster, the free Big Bend Coffee in the trailers, the shared outdoor kitchen and of course the aesthetics of the trailers and other structures. A pool would have been refreshing in the hot afternoons but the outdoor showers were nice.

Would love to stay here again someday!

Best stay ever.  We stayed in the camper 2 nights, and a yurt the other two nights.  I have never felt more relaxed in my life.  The whole town has a slow pace, and it's incredibly refreshing.  The bathrooms are clean including the outdoor setup.  There is a lot of privacy if you want it, and you have the option to meet the neighbors if you want as well.  I really can't say enough how much I loved this vacation.

The only thing I would mention is that the local restaraunts are slightly expensive, so plan to make some of your food to save money.

Very cool place. It has a sociable, hostel feel -- it's a good way to meet people (in the lobby, in the hammock area, in the kitchen, etc.)   We camped (in part to save money, in part because the yurts and teepees were full.  But everyone kind of mingles, though you can also have your own space.
If you're averse to camping, this is a nice way to do it without going all-in.  (My friend hadn't camped in 20 years, and enjoyed it.)  Though you're in a tent, you have access to surprisingly warm and nice showers, a fridge and kitchenette, and the lobby/patio/hammock common areas.  So you're not out in the woods on your own.
It's walking distance into town.  Staff was nice.  Cool crowd, cool vibe.  Liz Lambert rocks.

there seems to be a common thread in all of the reviews thus far: most relaxing place ever. we chose marfa as our honeymoon destination after it came up over and over in articles and on blogs a few years ago. (when a tiny town in the middle of nowhere shows up seemingly coincidentally, it felt like we needed to pay atention). we tried to go shortly after el cosmico opened, but it wasn't in the stars for us.

we finally made it down last week, and after 16 hours in the car, there is no place on earth i'd rather be. we stayed in the royal mansion the first night. it was so sleek and clean, the bed so cozy, the coffee strong, and showering in the sunshine? the best. we decided to switch to the barnstrator for the following two nights, thinking that a deck and bathtub were more up our alley. while we decided in the end that the royal mansion was our top pick for the most wonderful place we've ever stayed, you really can't beat taking a bath under the west texas sky with a stick.

everything else about the place was so great- the staff were super cool, everything was so clean and well considered. it was a pretty quiet week when we were there, we'd love to be there for a festival...someday, someday. go there now, and take me with you!

Let me preface this by saying: I'm going to come back and write a review when I visit here in the spring.
I visited at the very beginning of this year. One of the BIGGEST selling points of staying in the AMAZING yurt was that it was suppose to be equipped with a heated blanket. (remote controlled)
The damn blanket didn't work when cranked up to the highest degree. My friends had to get COMPLETELY sauced to keep warm. There were 3 of us in the bed and I was still practically frozen the entire night! AND we brought a queen fleece blanket and a fluffy duvet with us ONTOP of the 3 2 blankets the yurt came equipped with.
Because the blanket was so useless in that kind of cold, I have taken off 2 stars.
Now...outside of that, I have NO complaints! None! I really can't wait to come back and spend some time in the spring. The YURT was INCREDIBLE!!! It was stunning and lovely and if you go there with a love, it can be incredibly romantic!
The girl at the desk...(katia I believe)...was very nice and cordial.

I look forward to coming back here in the warmer months and RAVING. The only thing that made me deduct 2 stars was the fact that in the COLD of January, the advertised heating blanket should work!!!

This place is the bees' knees!  After staying one night at the overpriced and stark Thunderbird Hotel, we stayed at El Cosmico in the safari tent (same as the yurt, just a different shape.)  Atmosphere is calm, breezy, and easy.  We had fun just walking around and laying down in the hammocks, photographing the funky trailers, and people-watching.  You can either keep to yourself or easily socialize here.  The communal kitchen was super-cool at night, all warmly lit up.  We went in late July and night time was quiet; we were the only ones exploring.  Bathrooms are so clean and the solar-heated shower was EXCELLENT--I went early in the morning and the water pressure and temperature were perfect.  People respect your privacy here (although if someone were standing right at the wooden door that you close to take a shower, they'd be able to see all your lady parts--thankfully we didn't encounter any pervs.  I don't think it's a problem unless you're not the campy type and you balk at open-air showers/bathrooms. )

Night sky was gorgeous; even though there are lights from the houses in the adjoining field, it is  not bothersome in the least.

OKAY -- my favorite part was the yurt/safari tent!  SO spacious, clean, and comfortable as hell.  Slept so good here and was able to hear all the night sounds.  Like camping, but in luxury.  Was surprised to find electrical outlet hooked up to the yurt (cool!  we got to charge our batteries.)  and the coolest light--just perfect -- it looked like an aluminum container / can of some sort and had these little intricate designs carved out of it for some trippy mood-lighting.

LOVED this place and will come back again.  Would also like to try out the tent sites (1/3 the cost of the super-comfy, totally-worthy yurt.)  One thousand times more satisfying than Thunderbird!

see the website to gain more insight on the actual project ---

i went last september to the 2nd annual 'progress' party. and liz & co certainly know how to put on one hell of a party!!

great bands, camp area, GREAT food (by her brother at lambert's BBQ), a pancake breakfast, a tour of the existing yurts, vintage travel trailers, a cash bar, locals - artisans - cowboys - musicains - dogs - kids - designers - photographers  ---- it was awesome.

    (i'll add more later.)

Great for everything except getting some sleep.  The yurts are on top of each other, not spread out like I'd expected, and you could have three tents full of drunk teenagers right outside the flap, which we did.  The staff, grounds, and facilities were super cool though.

Staying at El Cosmico was a wonderful way to experience Marfa. We stayed in one of their world class yurts, which contained some of the most comfortable beds I have had the pleasure to sleep on (or maybe they seemed more comfortable when juxtaposed with a large tent?) Also enjoyed the disco lights, clean and hip outdoor showers, hammock grove, and hanging out with new friends at the outdoor kitchen. Also, super walkable to both the Chinati foundation and downtown. I'll be back, and hope to snag an airstream next time!

Sarah and team are welcoming, attentive and go above and beyond to make it the laid back lux camper relaxation station that it should be! The trailers are tastefully refurbished and offer the perfect amenities to enjoy some great coffee, music and friends. Great place for a romantic get-away or a group travel adventure.

it was our last night in Marfa and other than going to bed on an empty stomach due to no restaurants serving us and it being chilly that night, we had a good stay at el cosmico. the yurt was definitely awesome. if i ever return to marfa, i'll be staying here again.

We stayed in one of the redone trailers, which was great, except we only had hot water in our shower for two minutes in the evening and two minutes in the morning. Cold showers really killed the experience, especially since they were outdoors and the trailer was $150 per night. If it were not for that, it would get five stars.

stayed here for probably the most relaxing three days i've ever enjoyed.  the yurts are great to stay in and a fantastic deal.  el cosmico is really awesome place for a sweetheart vacation and marfa is a great town to take it slow!
