I procrastinated for months before I tried to find a hair salon. I decided to try the Ego Aveda Lifestyle Salon on Granville Street. In my experience, Aveda salons are always wonderful, and Ego was no exception.
I booked my appointment with Angeline, an intermediate level stylist. Since I was a new client, the receptionist asked me to arrive for my appointment 15 minutes early. When I got there, I filled out a form with my contact information and my "hair history", including when I got a haircut last. Once I filled that out, I was given a tour of the salon and offered tea.
Angeline was an awesome stylist. She was really friendly, and listened to all of my requests (layering, keep enough length so I can still wear my hair in a ponytail). She started off the appointment by giving me a head and shoulder massage. The massage was cool because she let me choose what scent of massage oil I wanted her to use. She then washed my hair, cut, and styled it. Overall, my haircut cost $55, which is pretty reasonable for an Aveda salon. After the appointment, I was given a $25 gift card to use for future appointments, which is handy because I will definitely be back!
The best thing about my appointment was the Aveda Smooth Infusions Style Prep Smoother Angeline introduced me too. I have ridiculously thick hair that takes forever to dry without a blowdryer. With this smoother, my hair was perfectly dry in under 5 minutes with blowdrying! I bought a bottle, and was able to get the same results at home. If you have thick hair, try this style prep smoother!
Overall, I highly recommend this salon. If you're in the area, check it out! -

I had the worst experience that I have ever had at Ego, both for a hair salon and their customer service. I went there because I thought I could trust the Aveda name, but was very disappointed. From the moment I arrived I felt that my stylist did not want me to be there. I was in for a pretty simple colour but was made to feel like I had asked for something extremely complicated.
I wanted a touch-up on my red ombré colour at the roots and wanted to maintain the end colour that already existed. My stylist continually tried to convince me to do an all-over colour because it was easier for her. In the end she agreed to do what I asked for. Throughout the appointment, she made me feel uncomfortable, didn't talk to me, and didn't offer me any refreshments. When other staff came up to talk to her she complained about me and the work she had to do on my hair while I could hear her.
I was asked to pay for my colour while it was still processing and was sent home with wet hair because the stylist said it would cost extra to dry, despite that all of their advertising states that colours include a blow dry. I was charged an extra $50 for highlights, which was explained as a charge for leaving the colour off at the ends. When I got home and dried my hair it was the same colour all over and definitely not what I asked for. I went back to talk to a manager, who booked me in to have it re-done. Their head colourist did what she could to fix it, but couldn't get it done in a single appointment.
I would never go back to Ego simply because they don't have skilled hairdressers. I can handle poor customer service and a price tag if they can actually do a decent colour! -

I am extremely picky about who touches my hair.....I have longer blonde hair.
It seems to be that Aveda salons have higher standards for hiring. I have never walked into an Aveda salon with blonde hair and walked out crying with black hair and grey streaks.....yes that happened.
My stylist is Jamie who is AWESOME...this girl knows hair. You combine the fantastic products, plus the tea, plus the massage and the talent present....I walk out feeling like I just came from a spa. I get a lot of compliments about my hair and how healthy is looks.
On the cost front, yes a hair cut is 65$ for women but thats the same at good non-aveda salons, so I don't find it expensive.
You get what you pay for.
I highly recommend them. This could easily be the best salon in Vancouver. -

Nice Salon, just pricey is all. For a mens' hair cut, not quite worth $55 (before tax)

This is a great salon! I've had a great initial experience there and since I have been there again and have another appointment waiting for me. You walk in and you're treated very nicely... cup of tea, scalp massage with essential oils, and pampering in general. My stylist, Sarah, is fantastic and really listens to you & what you want. She asked me about the products I use, my lifestyle, etc. in order to figure out the best cut for me. She also taught me the best way to blowdry my hair and style my sideswept fringe. She massaged my scalp and shoulders and gave me a cut that I really like. Once we were finished, she applied a makeup touch up. By the time I left the salon, I felt relaxed and looked awesome.
Since this is an Aveda salon, they use Aveda products, which are really nice! -

I LOVE MY HAIR. It's long and luscious and the colour is absolutely fantastic!
Between 2000 and 2006, I continually searched for a way to colour my hair and let it grow very long. I thought I'd never succeed because I visited all the so-called best salons in Vancouver and always left these places significantly disappointed because I could never get away from short, burned hair...
BUT NOT NOW!!!! Since I found Ego on Granville in 2007, I'm a regular and I now have great hair! It's long, the colour is perfect, and I just LOVE it.
I feel so fortunate to have found Gretchen, a colour artist and very fussy about perfection -- and fun-loving and talented stylist Taylor. Together they have produced a masterpiece that I get to play with each and every day! -

If you truly love a pampering - this is the place to be. But wait, it's not a spa, it's a salon. Don't be fooled thinking you're just chopping off some locks. Ego's different.
You get little extra specials when you get your hair coiffed here. Hand massages, scalp massages (with essential oils, at your stylist chair) and even makeup touch ups before you go.
All of stylists have been trained at the Aveda Academy, which is like having a Master's degree in hair.
I have been going to Taylor for over 3 years now - I get more compliments on my hair in one day than I used to in the year before I started seeing him.
I've recommended Jeanine to my blond-i-locks friends who can't get over how well their blondes turn out. -

Easily one of the best salons in Vancouver!
I really like the atmosphere here, it feels like you are among a bunch of friends who happen to be ninja stylists. Or maybe it is like Cheers, where everyone knows your name!
Whatever... I love it here.Listed in: Groomed but manly

Love it, love it, love it.
Decently priced hair cuts, wonderful staff, and great perks (coffee, tea, hand massages, deep conditioning treatments).
I started going here with the recommendation of a roommate a few years ago, and I can't imagine going anywhere else! -

I came from Seattle to get my hair cut at this salon, after having it been recommended by a friend. I booked my appointment online through Abby, requesting for a haircut with Taylor Smits, and all seemed well until I got to the salon. Not only was I not greeted upon walking up to the front desk, but when the receptionist finally acknowledged me, she could find no record of my booking. She claimed to have checked through the emails and said she still could not find me in there, which was odd as I had confirmed my cut the week before - I should have brought the printed email upon hindsight. Needless to say, Taylor could not cut my hair as he was booked with someone else, so I was offered a replacement stylist, Svein. He gave me a nice head and shoulder massage and his customer service was great, but I did not walk out with a master haircut as I had initially hoped. No apology was offered to me by the receptionist at any point during my visit for the mix up, but I was presented a gift card (services only) as I was a first-time customer. No amends or compensation was given to me in spite of their misbooking - not even an email from Abby to apologize afterwards. I appreciated the gift card, but with meh service and horrible reception, I could have gotten a collectively cheaper and better cut in Seattle.

This salon is all hype and no talent! I've been there a couple of times. The first Time I saw Jody for highlights and a trim. You couldn't even tell I had highlights and it cost close to $200.00. The trim was ok and he seemed like a nice guy but I told him that I HATE my hair to be styled flat and like it to have a bit of body so he spent what seemed like forever blow drying my hair straight and then flat ironing it and then slicking it down with product. It was hideous and exactly what I told him I didn't like. I had to go home and wash it. What a waste of his time and mine...
I thought I'd give this place a second chance since i really love Aveda products. When I booked my appointment I told the receptionist I wasn't happy with Jody and she told me I had to see Julie or Julia (can't remember). She said that Julia was a real pro with colour. I gave it a chance and while the highlights turned our really well I had the worst haircut I've had in my life! I went to another salon afterwards to try and get the mess fixed and the stylist was appalled. She simply couldn't believe what was done to me. I told Julia I'm trying to grow my hair out. It was long layers and for some reason she cut a massive chunk out of the back of my head. She cut the hair to about 2 inches long. The rest of my hair was down to my shoulders. She said she was taking the bulk out. It's almost a year later and my stylist that I see now can't believe it. I've been told it looks like i got my hair caught in a lawnmower. Not to mention one side was more than 1 cm longer than the other. How can people like this get away with doing this is a so call high end salon? She needs to realize that when she does this to someone it is us that has to live with your mess for a long time afterwards, in my case it's been a year and I'm still trying to recover my hair from this. When I contacted the salon they refused to respond to me. -

I've been coming here for about 4 years now and I always look forward to coming back. All the stylists are great and everyone is so friendly. Absolutely love the scalp massage with essential oils (you get to pick your favourite), love the aveda products, delicious tea, and my hair always looks fabulous. I always leave feeling wonderfully pampered and recommend this place to all of my friends many of whom are regulars now too.

It's interesting how my "relationship" with Ego Hair Space came to be.
I've always noticed Ego while shopping on Granville, but I never thought to check it out until I came across the raving reviews here on Yelp. I went in with very high expectations and was totally ready to shell out the $65 for a haircut with one of the senior stylists there if it meant having great hair. I brought in a picture of how I wanted my hair done (straight, but with lots of volume), and it seemed simple enough so I was excited to watch my hair transform. Taylor did my hair the first time, and while I'm sure he's a very experienced and talented hair stylist, I didn't like how he did my hair. He did a little bit of a trim, but he left the ends choppy (not what was shown on the picture), and to add volume to my hair, he curled it (i wanted it straight). So he spent the majority of the time in my appointment washing, blow-drying and curling. It felt like I paid $65 for a blowout, and it didn't even come out to look like how I wanted it to be. I was deeply disappointed and was definitely not prepared to ever go back again. But they offer free bang trims.... so when the time came for me to get a bang trim, I sucked it up and called again. Taylor wasn't available that day, so they booked me in with Tom.
Tom charges $45 for a haircut and probably is less experienced than Taylor, but I was VERY satisfied with the way he did my bangs and decided to ask for some hair advice on how I should have it cut next time. He quickly sectioned my hair off and told him how he would do it, and I was really impressed, so I booked an appointment for a few weeks after.
So finally I had my first full haircut appointment with Tom (which was today!). I really enjoyed the scalp and shoulder massage at the beginning because it wasn't just a flimsy relaxation massage, and he actually used a good amount of pressure so the massage felt stimulating yet relaxing at the same time. He also did a bit of massaging while he washed my hair and chose the perfect shampoo and conditioner for my hair type. He spent a lot of time trimming my hair, creating lots of layers (which is what I wanted), made sure that I didn't have a "mushroom poof" at the crown, and yet maintained the length. I loved how he walked me through the whole process and taught me how to recreate the look at home as well. It really felt like I was having a hair EXPERIENCE, not just a hair CUT. He meticulously blowdried my hair, straightened and styled it, and had me walking out feeling like a million dollars. I loved it.
Different people have different preferences when it comes to hair stylists, so it's difficult and a little unfair to say one is better than the other. But in my case, I definitely think Tom changed my perspective of this hair salon, and I would definitely come back again and again.
